Do you like making lots of characters or playing just one/a few?
Kind of wanted to hear the general public's preference on this. I have some people on my global who seem to play just one or two characters and thats it while others (literally) make a new character every time they're on. I'm sort of in between myself. At first I used to play maybe just one or two characters exclusively but now I've been a lot more open to trying out different concepts and stuck with the ones I enjoyed. I sort of sit on the idea of a new character before making one though. I have to think if it's something I really may enjoy or not. I end up spending 10 or 20 minutes just on the Playstyle screen trying to decide X_x.

i make stuff...
I won't feel satisfied until I have 48 level 50s on the server I play on.
H: Blaster 50, Defender 50, Tank 50, Scrapper 50, Controller 50, PB 50, WS 50
V: Brute 50, Corruptor 50, MM 50, Dominator 50, Stalker 50, AW 50, AS 50
Top 4: Controller, Brute, Scrapper, Corruptor
Bottom 4: (Peacebringer) way below everything else, Mastermind, Dominator, Blaster
CoH in WQHD
I'm sort-of somewhere in the middle, I think...
I have about 50 characters all together (That's counting the active ones, as well as the retired ones, the abandoned ones and the "joke builds"-), which sounds like the collection of an alt-addict, but I don't tend to play them the way most altitis sufferers do. I pick two or three to focus on at a time, until I get them all to some level. Then I move to the next two or three, getting them to that level... and so on, down my list. Once all of the characters of a particular "generation" are at the same point, I go back to the first group and advance them to Level Y, staring the whole cycle again.
That's how I've ended up with more than twenty at 50 (all but two of which are +3 full Incarnates now- o_O), five characters sitting at 47, and a whole horde between 35 and 45. I don't think I have anyone who isn't a "placeholder" below 20 on my main account at this point, and only one sub-20 on my secondary.

It's gotten to the point that the first thing I look at when checking out a new game is how many characters can I create...
That said, I really enjoy the 1-50 game so I have lots of alts in various stages across multiple servers although I consider Infinity my "home" server. I do enjoy the incarnate content and have a main incarnate and a few others climbing the tree. Mostly though, I play the 1-50 content with alts upon alts, some with stories, some without, some get shelved, a lot get deleted. But a few... a rare few, get to 50.

Both.
I've filled literally every server with alts, but yet also find fun and enjoyment from making a few 50 +3, incarnated/purpled/PvP IOed out super characters.
TW/Elec Optimization
I fancy myself a storyteller, so rather than explore a single character, I like to create a world in which many characters coexist and interact with each other. As such, there's really no way I could be satisfied with just one character. I don't exactly make zillions of characters like some people, but the roster grows and grows, and I like them all... Well, almost all. Insane Rick was just stupid.

i have 64 characters, but i tend to concentrate on only a few at a time, and ones on liberty are definitely more played. it really helps with patrol exp, that when i can play, on the weekends, i can rotate through a few and they are all gassed up on high octane exp
I've been an altoholic in the past, but mostly because I was in search of an AT and a powerset combination that I really loved. It wasn't until I rolled my StJ/WP brute that I finally had a main I liked playing above all others.
I don't bother with alts much anymore because 99% of the time they don't turn out to be as fun to play as my brute. I have a friend whose kids are just getting into the game for the first time and they are, of course, altoholics due mostly to having zero attention span. Every time I log in they ask if I want to make a new character, and I usually say no, I'd rather keep playing my brute. They just don't understand that once you've found "the One", all other toons become irrelevant.
NOR-RAD - 50 Rad/Rad/Elec Defender - Nikki Stryker - 50 DM/SR/Weap Scrapper - Iron Marauder - 50 Eng/Eng/Pow Blaster
Lion of Might - 50 SS/Inv/Eng Tanker - Darling Nikkee - 50 (+3) StJ/WP/Eng Brute - Ice Giant Kurg - 36 Ice/Storm Controller
All of my toons are on Triumph, and there are a lot...I have 2 accounts. Every 3 days, I log onto every one and drop a mish. I enjoy every one of them. I play particular ones depending on my mood, as I have every powerset. I love the variety. At times, I will take my healer, go invisible and fly around Atlas/The Hollows and heal lowbies from afar. (love doing that.) My all time favorite will always be the very first one I ever created in 2004....Healix.

I agree with Wing Leader, once you find your "One" you don't really play other characters.
Lately this has been my Fire/Cold corruptor.
Before the corruptor it was a Stone/Stone brute.
I usually make other characters for specific reasons ; PvP , static-teams, events
or if I know it might replace my 'main'.
I still play my Stone/Stone, but I find he is obsolete and the TW/Elec I have been leveling will eventually replace him as my 'tank'.
I'm a serial altoholic...I tend to create a new character, play them more-or-less exclusively till they hit 50, then put them aside and start a new one. For a while, I had a "main" that I was badging with, but I haven't played that one much lately.

I have so many alts I honestly don't know who, or where, most of them are. The vast majority of them never make it past level 10, and vast majority of those never really make it much past level 6. I get character concepts and I just have to roll them and I always have every intention of playing them, but never actually do. I never delete them though, because I love the concepts and stories they potentially represent. I've been playing off and on now since about a month after the initial release of the game and I only have one level 50 character. The next closest is 32 and is the very first character I ever rolled up on a live server and is my forum namesake. At this point I mostly just log her in to keep her up to date on all the nifty newness and to make costume adjustments.
your = Belonging to you.
you're = Contraction meaning "You are."
Ur = The name of an ancient Mesopotamian city.
ur = This is not a word.
I'm somewhere in between. I don't have that one OMG-THIS-IS-SO-ME character that some people do (and more power to them). But my altitis is rather small compared to some - it's more a matter of creating a concept, testing it for a while, then yay/naying it.
Some characters of mine will sit for AGES and then all of a sudden, bang, I finally "get" them (my mercs/TA MM, Profiteer, is one of them).

It's a mix of both for me.
I have moderate ALT-itis. I'll get ... binges... if you will where I'll create a dozen or so new characters and be absolutely in love with all of them.
The honeymoon usually lasts a week or two until the shiney wears off and I'm forced to take a look at the wreckage. In general, if I've had a character a month and they have not gotten out of the teens, then they most likely are going to be stripped of anything valuable, saved as a costume file, and recycled as something different later on.
On the other hand, those that make it past 20 tend to become permanent and a few of those (say about 10 currently) would qualify for my "if the game dropped to only one server, these would be the ones I saved" list.
Out of those elite, I have five that have become something of a 'signature' for me. The people I play with on different servers know me as that character and these few have the best developed 'personalities'. These few are the ones I return to time and again, who are always fun to play and never disappoint.

Lots. At last count I had 112 characters. I tend to rotate through periods of high activity on various servers. At the moment I'm mostly active on Triumph, Liberty, Justice and Victory over about a dozen characters, including five characters I'm actively trying to fully incarnate. Many of the rest are either 50s available at need but that I'm not badging or incarnating or else they're up-and-coming alts. I tend to level them by doing occasional Weekly Strike Targets task forces.

I have at least one controller with each of the control sets (Mind and Plant have repeat showings), a few dominators, and not long ago I started down the path of leveling one of each AT (MM and WS at 50, a stalker close behind... then everything else). So, yeah, I play quite a few. Usually, they'll hold my interest until I've IO'ed them out, even gone through the Alpha slot. Some I haven't played in a long time will be stripped of their IOs and sent to a low population server to retire.
I do, however, have my main and her Praetorian counterpart that will stay on my main server forever.
I make a lot of characters, but many of them don't even get to level 20. I easily get disillusioned by slow progress.

Out of those... only 3 are level 50.

The rest are around the 30-33 range.

I dont have an unique alt.
I dont have 30 characters either.
I have some concepts, I try, level, play them... Some stick, some get deleted, some got re rolled.
Im re rolling all time, everytime I come with a better concept or new powersets are out... So I guess that will never stop.
I have a Virtue server with three full pages of characters. Most of them are not above level 20.
