Any chance of superhero stuff being added to the game?

Superheroes are kinda big in Hollywood right now.

There's so much more superhero stuff that could be added to this game. Costumes alone: golden/silver/bronze age costume packs would be dope. Maybe even a 90s pack full of stubble, long hair/ridiculous mullets, pouches, imaginary muscles, and invisible feet. (Okay maybe not a 90s pack...)

But yeah. Anime...yawn. Mythology...yawn. Tron...yawn. Traditional MMO styles...yawn. Fedoras...yawn.

Let's get some superhero ish up in this bish!

I would love it if more superhero stuff made it into the game!

  • Real eye masks, not painted on.
  • Symbol options on belt buckles, backs, and capes, not just on chests.
  • Grapple-hook gun emote (I know the real thing isn't feasible, but this would be good enough followed by a super leap).
  • More bracelets, arm bands.
  • More "floaty bit auras", like crystal shards, or metallic spheres, or sea-horses, or cubes, floating around your character.
  • Working holsters, quivers, sheaths (hip, thigh, boot).
  • Sleeker, more sophisticated power armor.
  • Chest and eye blasts for ranged power sets, not just hand blasts.
  • Linked costume emotes with animated transitions (hoods pulled back, helmets removed/opened, power armor assembled over body).
  • Hoverboards inspired by the modern comic era.
  • Customizable "Mood" stances to replace default standing idle stances, more reflective of your character's personality (heroic, flirty, arrogant, relaxed, studious).
Anyone else have some cool ideas?

The traditional "spandex" style is already pretty well-covered, but I certainly wouldn't object to more. The proposed "retro sci-fi" pack looks like it will have some useful bits in this vein, like the shoulder rings and funky belts.

Im with Xanathos on this. There are a lot of tangents when it comes to costumes that are associated with the traditional "western" superhero.

On the one hand, I agree about the comic book costume packs. Masks/cowls, in particular, are largely terrible in this game. Painted on with no lens options... ears nonsensically present when they're supposed to be covered... white not showing well due to the manner the spandex is painted on... ugly.

On the other hand, all that yawned-at stuff is "superhero stuff"...

The painted on spandex is a problem - it needs to have defined edges, and some seams - plus, there should also be an alternative option for a more stretched effect across the chest.

Yes, we definitely need more superhero-specific costume pieces. This game is based around character customisation, after all.

The right costume pieces mean the difference between a shadowy spy and a flashy speedster.

We don't want to be armored enforcers of a tyrannical regime. We want to be silent vigilantes lurking in the night.

No more anime-inspired martial artists, let's have more superheroes - say, in the vein of Iron Fist.

I hope this post illustrates how important it is to have the right costume pieces when achieving a truly superheroic look.

That's crazy talk. Didn't you know superheroes don't have their own style, tropes and conventions?

They're just a catch-all of everything anime, scifi, steampunk, cowboy and fantasy.

And CoH is hardly a superhero game. If it was, it wouldn't be based on mechanics designed for the fantasy genre, like the Trinity.

We need MORE medieval weapon power sets.
MORE "super powers" that I could buy out of the car trunk of some guy named Tyrone who parks out by the airport, like dual pistols.
MORE variations on black dusters, pointy neon armor like Celestial and Ascended.

Absolutely do NOT allow us to pick up and throw cars, punch people through walls, cause property damage or go on patrol for anything other than gray con enemies.
Work on anything BUT those things, please, especially more swords and sword variations.

With regards to Silver Gale's post above...

No, it doesn't help.

The Imperial Defense set looks pretty much like a tech suit based four colours superhero. heck switch the colours to something more four coloursish and it would be a bog standard tech suit, saying that the colours chosen make the costume look Booster Goldish. Shadow spy and Speedster look like they're only seperated by colour and the Martial Artist DEFINITELY is only seperated by colour.

Basically all you've done is 'this is modern age looking stuff' and 'this is Four Colour bronze age looking stuff'.

The word Superhero can be pretty much anything and there in lies the problem. Yes Mask and Cowls aren't there but that's about it as far as I can tell.

So the question comes down to...what KIND of superhero do you mean, from the looks of things you mean Four Colours Bronze age superhero outfits which...we can do pretty well with the things we already have, the only thing missing is masks and cowls.

As Tenzhi pointed out...all that 'yawned' at stuff is technically super heroics, especially things like Mythology, isn't Hercules (or Heracles, one is Roman the other Greek...either or is fine) considered the prototypical 'superman'? He's super strong and resiliant beyond normal mortals AND the son of a God.

Well, it illustrates with the right lighting, posing and captions every image can be used to convey a meaning that's fitting with the caption.

...I mean, I'm not sure what else you were planning to illustrate? That all heroes should be in action poses and bright colours? I mean... your second image actually contradicts the first and third in that respect.

All I see is 6 very different takes on the term "Hero". Which is what the game is about, City of Heroes.

ETA -

Please don't use "we want", "we need", "we deserve" or anything like that unless you are a nominated respresentative of a group and identified as such. It's just poor form to speak for other people, especially on broad declarations and demands/requests. It is perfectly acceptable to use "I want", "I need", "I deserve"; we're not going to blame you for being a niche/person in your own right.

Wait, are you saying my examples of what is and isn't superheroic are in fact the exact same costume pieces, only colored differently? But that would mean that any costume piece can in theory be "superhero stuff" depending on how you use it.

We need new textured mask, Golden and Silver age stuff, new patterns for tights, more heroic gloves, shoulder pads, belts and boots, more hairstyles more skin tights textured, etc...

Last I checked the superhero genre was a pretty wide-encompassing one. Could we use more TRADITIONAL hero stuff? I think so.

P.S Silver gale is being sarcastic

I agree with the OP, and also like a lot of what Captain-Electric had in his list. Two things I've always hoped to see and have mentioned in past costume/art threads were opaque eyes, and large, full-body capes/cloaks.

And to that comment about destructible environments and throwing cars and the like, this game's "younger siblings" are the reason I pray to the MMO gods we never get that here. You so much as sneeze in the other two and everything within a 100 yard radius disintegrates; even if your character isn't "superpowered".

The problem with using the term "superhero" is that it covers so many different things. Fortunately some of the people here knew what I was getting at. I'd recommend focusing on that, rather than trying to engage me in an online internet debate about semantic word meanings. (Aka "nearly every thread on the internet ever.")

My own opinion is that there are a lot of tropes specific to classic comic-book style superheroes that just aren't in the game. Yes the spandex costume options are looking dated (the patterns and masks especially,) but that really is only the tip of the iceberg. It's not just the costumes: What about the zones? Where are the fights in space? On the moon? Under the sea? In Atlantis? In Dr. Doom's castle? In The Joker's carnival? In Gotham?

Let's generate a list.

Break it down to "superhero-ish" locations, abilities, npc/enemy groups and costume bits.

Then after that, if we can without a massive fight, perhaps prioritize them by how iconic they are?

Locations:

-Space/the Moon
-Other planets
-Under sea bases
-Atlantis
-Abandoned carnival/amusement park
-Dinosaur island

Abilities/systems:

-Stretching/morphing limbs
-Grappling hooks/swinging
-Environmental destruction and interaction
-Super speed feats (aside from just running fast and useless Flurry/Whirlwind. I feel this can stand on its own as a power set)
-Totemic animal powers
-Insect control
-Animal control
-Secret identities
-Chest and eye blasts for ranged power sets, not just hand blasts.
-Hoverboards inspired by the modern comic era.

NPC/enemy groups:

-Talking apes
-Giant bugs
-Dinosaurs

Costume bits and emotes:

-Real eye masks, not painted on.
-Symbol options on belt buckles, backs, and capes, not just on chests.
-More bracelets, arm bands.
-More "floaty bit auras", like crystal shards, or metallic spheres, or sea-horses, or cubes, floating around your character.
-Working holsters, quivers, sheaths (hip, thigh, boot).
-Sleeker, more sophisticated power armor.
-Linked costume emotes with animated transitions (hoods pulled back, helmets removed/opened, power armor assembled over body).
-Customizable "Mood" stances to replace default standing idle stances, more reflective of your character's personality (heroic, flirty, arrogant, relaxed, studious).

Here's something... you want to make this feel more like a superhero (or supervillain) game? I mean, even moreso then it is already?

Add secret IDs.

It would be a costume change into a (selectable) generic human body, with it's own name. Put the same restrictions that the walk power has on it (no power use), and there you go.

I mean, right now, I can have Brass Reactor (my rad/rad defender) flying around Paragon City in his massive power armor, but even when I costume change into his normal form, he still has the name Brass Reactor floating above him.

Add secret IDs.

while i think the spandex thing is done here to abundance, cant say no to johnny's dionsaur island and dinosaur enemies. It would be a great place for my anime-inspired katana scrappers to go fight enemies. also, emblems on backs , particularly kanji ones on backs for my martial artists.

I hate poo-pooing well thought-out ideas, but this could probably be simpler. Secret IDs are a good idea, but it isn't necessary to place arbitrary power restrictions on players in this case; and forcing generic costume options on players would lead to a bigger, angrier thread than the CoT debacle. You gotta remember that some players have MORE civilian ID costumes for their characters than spandex, especially on Virtue.

Instead, players should be able to tie a new over-head tag to a specific costume slot, or multiple costume slots if needed (delineated by brackets or a special color or font or something). Like I said, many players have multiple "secret identity" costumes, which is why I suggest multiple slots. What's to stop players (who don't want to play along) from using civilian ID tags on normal super hero costumes? Nothing. But on the other hand, it could be a statement that the hero's identity is publicly known--like Iron Man or Reed Richards.

On some of my characters who aren't in super groups, I've set up one-man SGs in order to hijack that tag for this purpose (by putting my civilian name in the tag). When players are put in the position to find weird workarounds like that, it's a sign that improvements could be made.

P.S. Regardless of our two suggestions, or which has more value (could be yours, I don't know), I see this as a low, low, low priority compared to other suggestions being made in this thread for costumes, powers, and zones.
