Would Action Figures count as CaHV Culture?
I definitely think so. Action figures go hand-in-hand with comics, cartoons, live-action superhero movies, etc. Besides, I know some people have made custom action figures and posted them on the forums, so there's certainly precedent.
It depends on what you use them for.
Yes.
Action figure? Please, "collectible figurines" is the preferred nomenclature.
Well thats all I need thanks
Should I just Retitle this thread or start a new one? |
There is a difference, sir. Figurines implies that they are statues with limited or no articulation; action figures are ACTION FIGURES.
Ok so I thought I would start off with showing what I have out of storage at the moment.

Dolls, figurines or action figures, all I know is they're worthless now that they're no longer Mint-on-Card.

My Masterpiece Grimlok, 25th Anniversary Superion, a bunch of the 20th Anniversary GI Joe vehicles, and 2 25th Anniversary Soundwaves aren't leaving their boxes (probably). Heck, I've still got an alternate coloring Tartanulas from Beast Wars (gray/black rather than his purply-blue-red stuff) MONQMC (mint on not quite mint card) and a sealed Machine Wars Optimus Prime.
want this so bad...but it's $150
ACTION FIGURE!
Statesmonkey Sez: Lighten up! It's a game, for Lincoln's sake!
Also: Six years of casual play begins to look an awful lot like one year of hardcore play.
This makes me want to unpack my Transformers collection (pretty much everything up to the head-masters) My Matchbox Voltrons, my Robotech collection, Star Wars Figures (with the Sears Exclusive Death Star playset) M.A.S.K., Sec-Taurs, Silverhawks, Thundercats, Tron, Inhumanoids, and whatever Marvel Secret Wars figures or Masters of the Universe or Go-Bots that may still be lurking around... Whatever else I have that I'm forgetting at the moment (something about hologram knights with staves and vehicles... other odds and ends)
And my Unicron
And and a V doll with a mask you can take off...
And a lot of Alien and Predators...
And some G.I. Joes (if I didn't give them all to my buddy who is a huge G.I. Joe buff in trade for his Star Wars that he was getting rid of...)
Okay... where was I again? I'm sure I have more but that's it off the top of my head. I spent every penny of my allowance, and traded friends all the time for them. I think I traded my old bike for my Thundercats... I was getting a new one for my B'day anyway...
They're all probably worthless as most have been cared for, but well-played with, as I was growing up, then later staged them for photo shoots of actions scenes that I probably have none of the pictures to anymore.
I have a few in my office. I'd have them all out on display if I could, but my office in the house doesn't have room for everything (I'll probably rotate stuff in and out once my son moves out and I move into that room) and my wife, as fangirl as she is about some things, doesn't think of them as suitiable for living room presentation (I'm fine with that too, wouldn't want them to get messed with and wore out any more than they are LOL). Also, as nice as it would be, we can't afford a house with enough room to just have a 'collection room'. If we had extra room, that would be the library (though I would probably sneak a shelf or two in there). Oh well, maybe after the kids move out.
People still care about action figures? Cool That was a passion of mine growing up. Being able to act out scenes or stories with the figures was a great imagination tool for me. I'm sure that played a lot into me running games, and my playstyle, when I got older (still run games today, mostly older systems). I try to really visualize the scenes and action in my games, and share that with the players, and I think that comes from all that time as a kid playing with the figures.
"I play characters. I have to have a very strong visual appearance, backstory, name, etc. to get involved with a character, otherwise I simply won't play it very long. I'm not an RPer by any stretch of the imagination, but character concept is very important for me."- Back Alley Brawler
I couldn't agree more.
Mr. DJ who is that awesome figure you posted a picture of... I NEED to know. Please tell me.

My ManCave™ has a shelf wrapping around lined with all the Spawn figures I collected back in the 90's. Most are out of the boxes as they just look cooler in battle scenes.

EDIT: Whoa, sorry about the large size.
I'll play. Here are some of mine.
It's nowhere near what my childhood collection was (50 heroes, 50 villains across various mediums)
I'd rebuild, but action figures aren't as cheap as they used to be.

Don't count your weasels before they pop dink!
Sadly don't have pictures, however, while it may not count as an action figure, I do have a few prized item amongst my figure collections.
the 50th Anniversery Godzilla figure collection. Minifigs of virtually every single Godzilla creature, including three versions of the main man himself (Showa, Heisei and Millenium), also one of the few products to have a figure of my favorite Godzilla monster, Biollante. The actual Biollante figure I want (which is in size with the other Vinyl Godzilla figures) currently costs $675 on Ebay...well beyond my now shrunken budget.
Several of my Resident Evil figures, William Birkin G-4, Alexia Ashford (first and third form in one figure), Tyrant and Nemesis figures.
My main prized posession however is my limited edition American Mcgee's Alice Cheshire Cat statue, the thing is solid and stands at 21 inches tall. Limited to 1000 run and only available from Tower Records, it cost me $175 dollars (which was about £90 back then) to have it shipped over here to the UK, numbered 899.
Here's a picture:

A real showstopper!
I don't really have any, sadly. I have three Gundam models my brother in law and I put together a long time ago. =/
There's a lot that I want though. That Karas one looks awesome, the Marvel and DC Bishoujo line looks cool, SH Figuarts Wild Tiger, and other stuff. So little time, so little money. :'(
Wow, all I found in my attic was half of a Snake Eyes action figure from G.I. Joe.
I ask because 1: I am bored and 2: I have started taking picture to document my addiction :P and would love to share some of the choicer bits of my collection and have others share theirs.
