Grimm vs. Once Upon a Time
while both are related to fairy tales, their very different shows,
Grimm for its part is closer to Supernatural than it is to Once, I liked the premier, but didn't quite wow me, at this point it is under the catagory of being, if I happen to be home, I will watch it, but will not go out of my way to watch
Once, I would compare it more to Tin Man or Alice, or in comes, Fables. At least initially I do plan to watch it as I would True Blood, Doctor Who, or Game of Thrones. It being on network television, does give it the risk suffering the same fate as Heores
I felt just the opposite. I found Once to be slow and boring, the main character didn't interest me at all and the whole show dragged on and on.
Grimm was a bit more my style.
Still, neither one was all that great, not awful, just not great.
I think Grimm has the better chance of Survival IMO, It's more in the vein of Supernatural or early X-Files

On a scale of 1 to 10 where 1=kill it with FIRE! and 10=worship the golden calf... WORSHIP IT!
Main Character:
Once Upon a Time = 6 (real-seeming character, hasn't completely captured my interest yet but perfectly serviceable as a character-in-development)
Grimm = 4 (dull, uninteresting... the actor hasn't found the fundamentals of his character yet but hey... it's only the first episode)
General Concept:
Once Upon a Time = 9 (very cool concept, love the switching between realms/time lines although that has the chance of getting a little sticky if not handled properly)
Grimm = 8 (also a good concept, loved Supernatural for much the same reasons... taking existing lore and adapting it to a new perspective... a narrower focus of only the Grimm tales may help them stay on target a bit more easily)
Supporting Cast:
Once Upon a Time = 6 (a lot of characters to work from but not much more than hints and glances so far.. a HUGE possibility for improvement in this score as time goes by however)
Grimm = 8 (already fully in favor of the clockmaking Big Bad Wolf... also love the fact that Grimm's police partner is going to be played as a smart cop who can see clues and make deductive choices without having a special advantage... I hate series that have the main character be all knowing and all powerful and the second fiddle is just there as comic relief...)
Villain(s):
Once Upon a Time = 8 (more so for Rumplestiltskin and the ambiguity of his leanings than for the wicked Queen/witch who started it all... one thing I DO love about the witch is that she actually seems MORE evil as mayor and mom than she did as a sorceress...)
Grimm = 6 (not the show's fault tho'... we simply haven't seen enough of them yet... although I was impressed by the cold blooded calm of her entering at the end and employing the needle on Grimm... the Captain being in the car was another good twist to things..)
Interest in Future Episodes:
Once Upon A Time = 9 (Can't wait for the next one... most looking forward to the development of characters and progression of the plot... also very curious about just how many and which fairy tale characters are in this town)
Grimm = 8 (very excited about this one as well but I have major concerns about the main character and whether or not he is going to develop a personality that I can actually care about... to be honest right now I'm much more interested in his Aunt and his new doggy-buddy than I am about him...)
My mind wanders so often you've probably seen its picture on milk cartons. - Me... the first person version of the third person Steelclaw
Steelclaw, I think you just summed up my thoughts about both series pretty much exactly.
Both have the one or two characters that knows what's going on: The wolf and the Aunt on Grimm and the boy and the mayor on Once.

It was my understanding from an interview (yeesh for my old man memory...) that even the Dark Queen/Mayor was affected by the curse, and in "our" reality has no idea of what is going on either.
I saw a trailer for Once Upon a Time in the movie theatre earlier this year and was intrigued. I only found out about Grimm in the last couple of days (and have seen nearly nothing about it), but I'm interested in it as well.
However, they're both on channels that I don't typically watch, and I missed both of their premieres. I have a feeling that the only way I might catch them is online after they've already shown on TV.

Grimm reminds me a bit of Buffy. Family line curse/gift to hunt the monsters of fairy tails.
Once is more ... Disneyish. It's interesting how the characters translate into our reality. Didn't see it this evening due to the fact cable is out (at least I'm now somewhere with power and heat) and I can't pull in ABC with an old set of rabbit ears.

Okay, having just rewatched Episode 1 and then watching Episode 2 of OUAT I liked it much more than I did the first viewing.
I'll be keeping up with both shows, for sure.
Especially if Grimm comes up with a smoking hot version of Red Riding Hood, like Ruby from OUAT.
Grimm did Red Riding Hood in the first episode. It was the little girl. When the guy opened the closet to put her jacket away, it and all the other jackets were red. Also, the "good" big bad wolf mentioned them going wacky when seeing the color red.
I somewhat enjoyed both, but they're two very different shows. I'll watch the next few episodes of each before I make any final decision.

The comment on Red Riding Hood was referring to Meghan Ory's version of the character in OUAT, and not the kidnapped and killed girls in Grimm.
Sarcastic statements don't translate well into text, especially after me having been up all night, so I'm sorry you misread that last part of my post as me being serious and not realizing that I had seen, and enjoyed Grimm, much more than OUAT on first viewing.
Meghan Ory is still hot, though.
Grimm has me more excited than Once Upon A Time but so far I am enjoying them. I can see myself dropping OUAT if they keep with the whole Wisteria Lane vibe though.
I watched both.
OUAT should have aired as a 2-hour pilot because the second episode was soooo much better than the first. I'll actually check it out for a bit to see where it goes. My only real gripe with it is the fact that the lead female isn't hot enough to be the daughter of SW & PC. The Queen/Mayor's looks better.
Grimm is, as someone else mentioned, very Buffy-ish. That makes sense considering the creators involved. The problem I had was the lead had zero charisma. Oh, and with it going up against Supernatural and Fringe, that spells certain doom.
Anyone else notice Grimm's resemblance to Dylan Dog? Even the main character looks kinda like Brandon Routh.
I did think the main character bore a resemblance to Brandon Routh, but I haven't seen Dylan Dog.
I did get a chance to watch episode 2 of Once a little bit ago, and it was much better than the first episode. The first episode set up a lot of the characters, and episode 2 fleshed many of them out so much more. Personally, it's got me hooked. If Grimm can do the same, I'll be a happy man.
Also, I see a lot of people comparing Grimm to Buffy, but I only barely see a connection. There's none of the life metaphors, witty dialog, and a several other things I can't think of right now that made Buffy great. It just has a main character that finds out that he has inherited the right to fight off the supernatural.
can you watch it online anywhere?

The first step in being sane is to admit that you are insane.
Grimm is a procedural in Fantasy dress, but it's opposite two genre faves that will steal its potential audience like candy from a baby. I give it 6 episodes.
OUAT is a heavily serialized fantasy drama, but it's up against aging shows with one foot in the grave. I think it will make a second season.
So far I like OUAT better than Grimm. But if I were to predict how long these shows will last I'd probably say Grimm has a better chance to last longer. The main difference between the two shows is that OUAT already has a logical conclusion built into the story whereas Grimm has set itself up pretty well to be an open-ended episodic series.
Basically we already know that OUAT will end when the curse is broken and everyone returns back to the way they are supposed to be. Its outcome is already pre-established, so watching the series boils to seeing how long they can drag out the inevitable resolution. I suspect this'll be yet another show that would have been better served as something like a 10 episode miniseries (like Band of Brothers) than an open-ended series. They'll probably try to drag it out as long as possible until it gets silly instead of making a clearly defined story with a set beginning, middle and end.
Grimm on the other hand looks like it could easily evolve into an on-going "Chosen One versus Critter of the Week" deal that worked for shows like Buffy/Angel. Grimm doesn't seem to have a hardwired way to finish the story they've presented so it can probably keep evolving for years, assuming it's good enough otherwise.

I'm enjoying both, but it's pretty hard to compare them as while themes may be similar the tone of the two are nothing alike. My initial thoughts:
I was surprised how much I liked Grimm. It's not that I expected it to be bad, I just didn't expect it to be as good as it was. Unlike a lot of people here, I actually bought the lead actor. I loved the atmosphere and how the town has little touches that make it "feel fairy tale-ish". I liked the partner (cop) and the werewolf. It looks like it is going to end up being a complicated relationship, and that's refreshing.
OUAT was pretty much what I expected it to be. I like the lead actress. I don't like the "look" of the real town as much as the one in Grimm. I don't think they have put in the touches to connect the two worlds very well (but that may not be the point either). I'm not crazy about the sheriff in the real world or the Evil Queen in the fantasy world. I don't buy her in that role. I do, however, really like her as the real world mayor. Personally I wish the actress was just a tad older i.e. Madeleine Stowe in Revenge. (What? Yeah I watch that....so sue me.) The role just begs for an actress that carries the weight of the evilness and maybe chew the scenes a little bit more. The actress they have seems to be able to do that much easier in the real world scenes.
But as I said, I like them both and will continue watching.

Both have had their premiers, I've watched both of them. I'm curious how each of them will do. They are very much different from each other other than they revolve in some way around the fairly tale mythos in the real world. Once Upon a Time is much more stylized and seems to have a higher effects budget, it has a lot more mysteries and clues and tricks touching between the fairy tale world in the past and the real world.
Grimm on the other hand is more gritty and realistic, with the fairy tales being much more specific to the Grimm Brothers tales rather than Once Upon a Time which goes all over the map even spreading to much more recent fairy tales like Alice in Wonderland and Narnia. Both have the one or two characters that knows what's going on: The wolf and the Aunt on Grimm and the boy and the mayor on Once.
Which ones have you seen so far, have you seen them both? Which one do you think will survive, either of them?
Personally, I like the mysteries and a lot of the characters so far on Once, especially the main character. She seems very interesting. On Grimm, I like a lot of the secondary characters, but the main character feels rather boring to me so far. I hope that changes in time and I hope both of them will succeed, but I have a feeling that as far as episode one goes, my money's on Once.
