Grimm vs. Once Upon a Time

Well so far Grimm has done Little Red Riding Hood and Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

Waiting for Hansel and Gretel.

Grimm is one of those shows where the supporting characters are much more interesting and have much more personality than the main character. I like it so far but I hope that Grimm gets the hang of his character the way that SMG got the hang of Buffy.

OUT on the other hand I'm iffy about. The show itself is pretty good but I hate the kid so that balances it out.

Last night's episode of Grimm was interesting. I had hints of something greater going on. It had another group that seem friendly to the Grimms. And at first I was wondering "what the heck do bees have to do with fairy tales?" And then I looked it up and when I said that I would prefer that they take on lesser known Grimm's fairy tales rather than more well known non-Grimm fairy tales, it turns out they did. So there's that.

I've watch the first 3 episodes of both now and I am slightly favouring Grimm. Although I do find the Evil Queen/Mayor eminently watchable.

My problems with Once Upon A Time mainly take the form of complaining to myself that the character's motives are all somewhat pantomime followed quickly by *facepalm*

Once Upon A Time has also made me realise how bitchy I am! I mean, this look does absolutely nothing for you! She looks far sexier as the Major.

Plus the Huntsman totally has the hots for the Major.

This is a song about a super hero named Tony. Its called Tony's theme.

I concur. The actress does look much sexier as the mayor.

The strip-naked-to-use-thermoptic-camo Major from the movie, or the skin-tight-catsuit-bad***-longcoat Major from Stand Alone Complex?

Also, I decided to watch Once Upon a Time on Hulu and I quite liked it. I think Rumpelstiltskin/Mr. Gold is my favorite character so far. He seems to be the driving force behind what a lot of the characters are doing. I wonder if he's the ultimate big-bad of the series and he's working on the mother of all Xanatos gambits.

Goodbye, I guess.

I was expecting, when he was introduced in our reality as the person who "owned the town" to be president of the bank. Owning the pawn shop is a little too much like Needful Things.

The latest episode of OUaT was decent but I did have a couple 'facepalm' moments.

The first was accepting a deal with Gold. It was inevitable but I was hoping the writers would find another way to break Cind's deal and show Emma had some brains. Now we have the Hero owing a favor to the Villain. Blah.

The second was accepting the deputy position. I mean, shouldn't it be obvious to Emma that the sheriff shouldn't be trusted? I think the writers could have done a better job at making it apparent that she had no other choice. 'Time to make some roots' isn't very convincing to me.

I'm really hoping the writers show Emma out smarting both Gold and the Sheriff by turning Gold's deal and new deputy job to her advantage.

Lastly, my wife got all pissed when the Fairy God Mother got destroyed. That was totally unexpected. I liked it.

We saw how Cind was able to trick Rumple with a "second deal" so I figure we'll see Emma manage to trick Gold in a twisty way with the "second deal" she made. I also figure Emma will use the Deputy job to maneuver her way against the mayor as well.

I didn't really mind that the fairy godmother got zapped either but it was kind of sad that she only got about 15 seconds of screentime. I almost feel sorry for the actress who barely had any chance to do anything.

Ya, these are my hopes as well but I don't expect them to happen. Too many times my expectations are dashed in shows I enjoy and then I stop watching. So for this time, I'm simply going to assume she's a dope until proven otherwise.

Perhaps she wasn't 'nice' enough to the producer(s).

I also find myself trying to identify characters from their story, as shown on the show, as people in the town when I first see them. It's fun. I wonder if the wolf is just that littlecrystal figurine?

Maybe they'll eventually get around to introducing a wolfy looking guy who'll "hound" Ruby as a sort of recurring pseudo-love interest for her. Maybe it could be a guy who hangs out at the restaurant who keeps making playful passes at her that she keeps having to dodge while she's doing her job.

Possibly. But the way she reacted when that figurine got bumped around (when her car got lowered off the tow truck) got me thinking.

I think the figurine was a gift from whoever the BB Wolf is.

Could be. But even if they don't introduce an actual BB Wolf character they ought to at least have some passing idiot on the street hoot out a wolf-whistle at her just to acknowledge who she is as an inside-joke.

Might the Big Bad Wolf be Ruby's Grandmother?

I was just talking to my manager and told her who Ruby actually was. She didn't know that so, yeah, they may need to be clearer about somethings.

But I still think the Sheriff could be BB.

Well I must admit transforming Red Riding Hood into a tarted up adult "rockabilly" waitress was a bit of a stretch for that character. I'd be willing to bet there are a lot of people who don't realize that's who she's supposed to be, even after the wolf reference in the last episode.

I'm reasonably sure that the Sheriff of Storybrook is the Huntsman from the Snow White fairy tale, but I suppose that might not be extract right depending on how they decided to transform the character. *shrugs*

The biggest hint with Red Riding Hood, other than the wolf figure, the fact that she always wears red, her name is Ruby which is a red gemstone, she brings people treats, and she lives with her "Granny"... wait, I forgot where I was going with that.

And I'm reasonably sure that the Sheriff is the huntsman, the fact that he's in bed with the Mayor and yet is working against her in his own little way is a pretty good indicator in my book.

A small sight-based hint that I saw most clearly this past episode -- and it may just be me seeing something that wasn't deliberate -- were Ruby's pigtails. As she was talking to Emma, it struck me that they looked alot like wolves' tails. Whether it was deliberate or not, I thought it was neat.

As for the wolf figurine, this isn't the first time on this show we've seen something magic contained within a breakable hand-sized object. The flashback to when Show White and Prince Charming met had Snow in possession of a pendant containing some magic mojo that, once the pendant was smashed and the magic released, would turn its victims into bugs. Might this figurine be foreshadowing of some kind, possibly a future story dealing directly with Ruby and the wolf?

At any rate, we were thrown a few nice hints/details about Ruby this past show. OUAT isn't the best new show this season, but I'm still inclined to watch. And I still think everything that happens around Gold/Rumpelstilskin is All A Part Of His (The) Plan (shades of Heath Ledger's Joker, and wheels within wheels), even if it's seemingly bad (his imprisonment -- you can't tell me he said all that and didn't know what was coming, yet let it happen anyway).

I hear ya. I keep waffling between those two guesses, and really it could go either way. That's another plus for the show, in my opinion.

I'll bet what we'll find out is that the Huntsman is routinely "servicing" the Mayor but that he doesn't really love her. Perhaps she has some kind of blackmail over him that allows her to "use" him whenever she wants. Now that Emma has arrived he might decide that being used by the Mayor is something he won't want to do anymore. It's a possibility at least.

Well I just finished watching the first 3 episodes of Grimm.

It's okay but I just somewhat tire of the whole "I can't tell anyone that I see x (or am x)" thing I guess....

And it sounds like Grimm also got picked up for a full season and is being moved to Thursdays. Liked the last episode showing the Police commissioner reaper being a bad***, and the bobad starting to enjoy helping the main character. Love seeing him annoyed, but having him grudgingly help every single time would get old pretty quick.

Haven't caught up with the latest Once yet, hoping to later tonight.
