  1. Saw a Willy Wonka meme poster in someone's signature on these forums several weeks ago, saying something about NCSoft(?) having created a city that heroes defended for the past 8 years, and asking what happened when (NCSoft) threatened to destroy their (the heroes') city. I should have saved it when I had the chance, and now I can't find it! Anyone know of the image I'm talking about, and can point me in its direction? I'd be grateful! Thanks!

    Devs moving on

One thing that strikes me in all of the comparisons between CoH, CO, and DCUO: City of Heroes, as it is now, comes out way ahead in many areas. But let's look at a more equalized playing field. How did City of Heroes, at its 1-, 2- or 3-year point, stack up against the other two at the same points in time? It's been fairly easy to choose the much-more-developed City of Heroes over the other superhero MMOs, the question of lacking or undesirable features aside, at least as I understand most opinions. I've not played the other two, myself.

Let's say, then, for the sake of argument, that a CoH2 did come along. Matt Miller may or may not be involved. Really neat things, as well as the things most people love about the game (costume creator, powers customization, travel powers, etc.), could be included. Still, one has to take into account that a new superherp MMO (CoH2, say) is going to very likely be much more limited than the CoH of today. The game we love today was built up to be what it is over several years, and some say (with good reason, surely) that it's a radically different beast now than when it started.

So, CoH2 may well suffer in comparison to City of Heroes, just like CO and DCUO, if only for the fact that it will not have had time to develop into a richer game. Trying to include at CoH2's launch all of the things that CoH has now would probably mean a development process of 4 to 6 years.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is that we are faced with three possibilities that are the most likely: CoH2 never comes to pass; CoH2 arrives, but is disappointing to all those who may have kinda expected to keep playing CoH as it stands now, only with (better) differences and new things that are received very positively, but instead got a much rawer and less-developed game; or CoH2 is in development for several years in an attempt to be a real and awesome successor (in which case, investors are likely to push for earlier release, and even the most loyal players of today may not be around to "come back").

Titan's Plan Z "spiritual successor" fits into the above somewhere, or stands as a fourth possibility, but probably won't be able to avoid years of development and will then have to try to attract a playerbase that has largely moved on.

I mostly feel bleak about City of Heroes these days, and continue to work on my gathering of screenshots. Actually playing seems pointless and depressing to boot. I wonder what part of the grieving process I'm in now? I have bouts of thankfulness for the years of enjoyment I got out of the game, so there's that. Okay, back to work...

  4. My first moment of true OMG!!! in this game was when I flew for the first time. At the last moment, I will be in Atlas Park (33, natch!), as high as I can go, and heading down toward the Atlas statue.

And I will be crying on my keyboard.
  5. Nihili, thank you.

This type of instruction is even better than I could have described as desiring. You were specific and yet generic enough to allow for any type of character to be successful, which is exactly what I didn't even know I wanted. I can't wait to try this out, which alas must wait until tomorrow evening (did I mention my lack of copious amounts of free time, in addition to the deadline coming up for all of us?).

I'll keep you posted on my progress. For any others reading this thread, please don't hesitate to offer your advice or instruction. Hopefully, many others aside from myself may benefit.
  6. For a number of reasons that aren't really relevant now, I've played very little over the past 18 months. Now we've got a little over 2 months. I have powersets I want to play, but I'm very tired of and have very little time left for the slog to level characters up into the 30s and beyond. Here and there, now and again, I've read posts by this or that forumite wherein they claim to have leveled a character to 50 in a handful of hours.

Firstly, I find such claims hard to believe.

Secondly, if there are methods that exist to level characters with such speed, I'm wanting to do the work myself, such as it is. Thus, I'm hoping to get advice or even actual methods, to include "live" or AE missions I could use. (Side note: I tried CEBR a time or two, but I guess I couldn't get the hang of it, left out vital steps, or was still too much of a lowbie to be successful. I died dozens of times before giving up.)

I've played a bit on Beta, with the DXP Boosters and etc. Still too slow for what I'm wanting. It took me 2 hours, even using AE farms, to get a new character to level 12. That might give you an indication of my level of ability. :/

I understand, too, how unpopular powerleveling characters is, or AE Babies, and whatever. I've done both in my time. And I've experienced much of the journey from 1 to 50 over the past 6 1/2 years, so with only a few very short weeks to go, I want to play characters that are fully- or almost fully-realized. If you normally frown upon what I'm asking, or feel that such behavior ruined the game (or greatly contributed thereto), I don't disagree. However, with the clock ticking...

Recapping: I want to level characters fast. How do you really, actually, do it? I need detailed plans, please. If you don't feel comfortable replying publicly, please consider sending me a PM.

Thank you to all those willing to help me, and for all of you willing to understand.
  7. Now if only they'd turn on DXP for the Beta server as well. I missed out on buying Beast Mastery and Nature Affinity, so I've created a character using both there. I figure Beta's a server now just like any other, at least for those lucky enough to be able to log in still.

Hmmmm. I've got questions but I'll ask them in that forum.
  8. I will be here until the servers shut down, but I don't entirely trust that they'll stay up until November 30th, as has been reported. Thus, I'll say my little goodbyes now, and maybe I'll have more to say before The End.

The first character I got to 50 was an Energy/Energy Blaster by the name of Clockwork McGurk. This was done on the Pinnacle server, back in 2006-2007. The first supergroup I was invited to was run by a guy named Balraug, and I made many friends there. IIRC, one of that SG's little quirks/traditions was that everyone have a nickname. Mine was Timex; I even made that account's global name @Timex. I apologize that I've forgotten the names of most of the friends I made in that group - I've even forgotten the name of that supergroup. Some of the names I do recall were Too Much Coffee Girl (Beana), Blu Skye (Blu), and Giinsu (Mack, as in Mack the Knife - a Claws Scrapper, of course).

Balraug had to give up playing, and I eventually ended up with another SG, The Endless, run by Doheny. It was this group that helped finish the push to 50 with Clock. Again, I made many friends with this group, to include Doheny and Morgan, even introducing a RL friend to the game (Hi, Rouge Recluse!), but alas, I can recall almost none of their names now.

The reasons why I left the game and why I started another account when I came back had everything to do with my own failings and nothing to do with any of the marvelous people who'd been my friends and SG-mates back in the day.

I'm posting this message to say I'm sorry. I'm sorry I disappeared, seeming to turn my back on all of you with no explanation and no warning. You were (and, I'm sure, are) great players and great friends. Now, just like an old man who sees the end is near and looks back on his life with regret, I see the end of our beloved game approaching and regret all that I let slip away from me. All the friends, and all the time. = (Melodramatic much?) = I kick myself now that I spent most of the past 18 months or more not playing, merely keeping my VIP status active and dipping in sporadically and infrequently.

But the end of the story isn't yet written. We have yet to see this game's final fate. And as I said, I'll be here, come what may.

I salute all you players who've let this game become an important part of your lives, who've even gone so far as to let this game into your hearts. You know who you are. You're all my friends in spirit. Let's keep fighting this fight together!
  9. Chiming in with another vote to unlock everything that can be unlocked without crashing the servers. I would hope that at this point no one would begrudge others having toys that they "didn't earn." Come December 1st, it won't matter who had what, so let us all enjoy what there is to enjoy while we can.
  10. Chiming in here with another vote for perma-double-XP. Really, what could it hurt now? Leveling any alts and fleshing them out that much faster will add to our enjoyment of them while we still can do so.

  12. Having only played City of Heroes very infrequently for well over a year now, I find my thoughts wandering back more and more often to the idea of trying out some of the new powersets and all the newer content. I've even made a few attempts to play recently, but just making a new character and playing has led to me logging off within a couple of hours, disinterested. In an effort to stave off boredom at just pushing keys until the enemy is defeated, I'm thinking I should try playing again with a list of diverse goals in mind. To that end, I'm posting here.

Let's start with a premise: I'm a new player, and I'm going to make a new character (the type of character is unimportant, I think). Given that the accomplishment of any particular thing in this game is not essential, what are some beneficial goals I might strive to reach? Item #1 on the list will be "Have fun," as I believe many would agree it should be. What things do you try to do on each of your new or main characters? What badges do you make a point of garnering? What items do you collect? What milestones do you hit? Are there certain things that should be done at certain levels, or in a certain order? Assume I have only limited knowledge, and please feel free to include links to ParagonWiki (or something similar) for further research.

I'll keep the list updated in this post (doing so every couple of days, depending on the frequency of new entries), and I thank all of you in advance for reading and/or participating.

    1. Have FUN!
    2. Level from 1 to 50
  13. Firstly, thanks to Father Xmas and Hyperstrike for your help way back when. This whole project got delayed/back-burnered, as you might guess, but I'm now back with more questions.

Months ago, I replaced the old graphics card with a used card that was just the same. Cheap (as in free), I knew it would work, and etc. Now, that old card is balking at playing CoH/other games, so I'm trying again. Got this card:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814133356

Card arrived, properly and safely installed, booted up. DVI connected, if that makes a difference. Booted all the way to the desktop, then the PC locks up. Specifically, mouse cursor won't move. This happens in Safe Mode as well. Maybe not relevant, but I never get a notice of "Found new hardware" either.

Okay, says I, the card asks for a 350W power supply, and I've got 305W (not 350 as I earlier reported). I pick up a new 430W power supply, install it, and boot up. Forgot the floppy drive connection, and a message dutifully informs me of this. Power supply seems to be good, but the same locking up occurs, and at about the same point (after desktop is fully loaded).

Re-installed old card, and no lock-up, but still have graphic problems only when trying to play games. I think the fan on the old card is not working, and thus the card overheats, but that's neither here nor there.

Are there BIOS settings I forgot to adjust first, or is this card just too much for this MB? (MB specs here: http://www.ascendtech.us/dell-dimens...eldim4700.aspx )

Thanks in advance for all advice.

On reflection, my take makes little sense, but I initially thought Merida was talking about the lad wishing he was eating instead of shooting, as in "tossin' (back) kippers." Admittedly, that'd be a strange pronunciation, even accounting for the accent. I then thought the king followed up with "An' loadin' up fridges," which makes all kinds of no sense. If he was wishing he was eating, he'd be emptying fridges, of course, not filling them, notwithstanding the use of a slang term for a device that wouldn't be invented for hundreds of years yet. Something to do with bridges makes more sense, but what? Holding them up, as MentalMaden suggested? Dunno. But I am stoked by this clip.
  15. Like many, I'd like a pack with most or all of these pieces. Barring that, I found choosing between the three sets as shown to be a struggle. I like 1 from option A, 2 or 3 from option B, etc. Ultimately, I went with option B, however...if it's possible, I'd be overjoyed to see the boots, gloves, shoulder pieces and chest detail from option A included in the costume set.

If it's one set or nothing, then I of course vote for B, but I give a thumbs down on the zipper down the front. Lose it! If we have to keep it, at least don't emphasize it with a glow.

    Looks good!
  16. Have him wake up in a bed in Vegas with Lindsay Lohan on one side and Paris Hilton on the other. All three are wearing rings on that special finger, as well as an impressive assortment of dessert topping stains.

  17. Though I've never played with you, Steelclaw, and can only lay claim to the merest of acquaintances with you here on the forums, I vicariously feel a tremendous sense of accomplishment. Because of the fantastic community here, many of us can share in what you've achieved because it happened to one of us. 'Member I said you was a celebrity? We have many celebrities here, but this time is yours to shine. Be the star, Steelclaw, BE THE STAR!!

I propose that, for 2012, one of your resolutions should be to write up your Tournament as a Guide. File it under Playstyle. File it under MetaGame. Or let it inhabit its own category, while serving as that category's only entry: Steelclaw's Tournament. Yup, just like that. Such a guide must bear your name.

    Who'll second my motion*?

*that would mean a whole lotta work for poor ol' Steelclaw?
  18. My question: will these helms be tintable, and will they be available for all three body types?
  19. A small sight-based hint that I saw most clearly this past episode -- and it may just be me seeing something that wasn't deliberate -- were Ruby's pigtails. As she was talking to Emma, it struck me that they looked alot like wolves' tails. Whether it was deliberate or not, I thought it was neat.

As for the wolf figurine, this isn't the first time on this show we've seen something magic contained within a breakable hand-sized object. The flashback to when Show White and Prince Charming met had Snow in possession of a pendant containing some magic mojo that, once the pendant was smashed and the magic released, would turn its victims into bugs. Might this figurine be foreshadowing of some kind, possibly a future story dealing directly with Ruby and the wolf?

At any rate, we were thrown a few nice hints/details about Ruby this past show. OUAT isn't the best new show this season, but I'm still inclined to watch. And I still think everything that happens around Gold/Rumpelstilskin is All A Part Of His (The) Plan (shades of Heath Ledger's Joker, and wheels within wheels), even if it's seemingly bad (his imprisonment -- you can't tell me he said all that and didn't know what was coming, yet let it happen anyway).
  20. I don't frequent the forums as much as I used to (new job is really starting to interfere with my time off, plus frustrating forum logout bug is frustrating), so if this was directly addressed before, forgive my asking. Further, I'm not saying I've got Steelclaw all figured out (who does?), but it seems to me that he's not likely to make posts stating "I did X in real life, or I'm feeling (general emotional state #Y) this week." Some folks know about his Tournament, myself included, so after these several weeks of City of Heroes: Freedom being released, my idly burning procrastinative curiosity leads me to ask this here.

Steelclaw, how has CoH: Freedom affected your Tournament, if it has at all? How does the Paragon Market affect your playstyle, if at all? Do you have any Free accounts, and if so, how do you use them?

At the last moment, it occurs to me that I could've just sent Steelclaw a PM, but dangit, son, you're a forum celebrity around these parts, so you might as well get used to these types of public inquiry! Console yourself with the fact that, for us reading your missives, you're the equivalent of a Lady Gaga or a Weird Al, or maybe even a Jon Stewart. That's right; long after your son stops thinking Dad is cool and starts being embarrassed by him, some of us will still think you're cool. In an oddball way, of course, but that's a good thing.
  21. OUAT ending when the curse is broken? Won't happen. Mr. Gold/Rumpelstilskin has plans. BIG plans. If the writers/producers are smart, they'll throw us a big ol' curve ball like Dollhouse did in Episode 6 of its first season. To that point, it was a formula identity-of-the-week show. Then the hammer dropped, new layers were revealed, and (some) people started paying attention.

My prediction: Once Upon A Time is an onion. Not an apple.
  22. Jeff Goldblum as Croyd Crenson.

Obligatory in-joke: Dudley Moore and Pia Zadora, as Tisianne (etc.)/Dr. Tachyon and Blythe Van Renssaeler/Brain Trust, respectively.
