Extended trailer/first scene thingie now up on YouTube here.

Man, it's like this thing was designed to specifically appeal to my scots-descended wife. I may as well start camping out for the line now.

Also: Six years of casual play begins to look an awful lot like one year of hardcore play.

I have mixed feelings about this..Sure Pixar! but..it looks like your generic "tomgirl princess defys all the old ways and becomes a hero" thing that has been done to death.

Same here. I agree we need more female protagonists in film, but trope is trope. We need more diversity in our female heroes.

On the other hand, Pixar is making this one.

It's funny but I almost got the vibe of the classic Wonder Woman bit where the princess "mischievously" entered the big contest to "prove herself as the best warrior" to everyone. Obviously the details between this trailer and Wonder Woman are a bit different, but since you mentioned the idea of this being another rehash of the overused tropes I figured I'd add more to that fire.

Regardless it does look like it'll be a good movie anyway.

Yes but "tomgirl princess decides to accept the status quo and conform to her patriarchal society" while unexpected, wouldn't really pack the theaters beyond opening weekend.

If..it is done well it would. I am not saying this is going to be a terrible movie, it is probably going to be the best tomgirl princess movie ever mostly likely just because Pixar is that good.

Will I go see it? Of Course, Pixar has garnered quite enough good will from me over the years to go to. Heck their worst movies are the Cars ones, and the first one was a good remake of Doc Hollywood.

There's a reason those kind of movies keep getting made, though, and it's because if you can put a good spin on it, it's really easy to make it awesome. This has Pixar working on it, so they deserve the benefit of the doubt.

The other reason being there's only so many archetypes to draw upon for the Hero's Journey for a protagonist for either gender that have a wide enough appeal to entice the largest audience.

I'm worried I'm going to need subtitles. Billy Connolly's (the King) line after Merida's line about caber tossing (0:43 mark or so) is unintelligible to me even after cranking the volume up and listening to it a half a dozen times. All I can make out is "Or xxxxx bridges".

What I find interresting is all the hate for Cars 2, when it was one of the top 10 biggest movies of 2011.

Also, gonna see it!

Cars 2 catches a lot of flak because it was Pixar's first blatant money grab movie. Even Pixar came right out and basically said "unlike our other films, we made this movie first and foremost with the express intent to make money on toys." What was offensive to some viewers was just how transparent they were with it.

Eh, Pixar is in the business of making money. Their stock prices dropped when Up was announced because unlike Cars there would be little profit to be made off merchandising. And merchandising is a lot of the real money is made. Cars brought in over a billion dollars through toys and other merchandising.

Artistic integrity is nice and all, but a billion dollars is really hard to ignore. And running an outfit like Pixar isn't cheap.
