I just re-watched the 1991 Rocketeer a few weeks ago and it was still fairly entertaining all things considered. Of course when I watched it I wasn't sitting there thinking "They really need to remake this movie" either.

I know Disney's probably all excited to cash-in on the wave that The Avengers created, but seriously all this "remake" nonsense is just getting tiresome given just how often these remakes suck compared to the originals.

Hollywood has always done the rehash and always will. It's not worth getting worked up over.

I'll go see this movie. I quite enjoyed the original, and hope to see a good pulpy reincarnation.

Yeah I realize Hollywood has been remaking movies for decades now.
Doesn't stop me from pointing out that maybe 95% of the remakes are worse than the originals.

Personally I'd say they go up and down. Consider how many Sherlock Holmes, Three Musketeers, or Shakespeare movies there have been. Those are all over the map. Just because it's not a classic work being redone does not inherently doom it.

Well I did give remakes a 5% leeway of being good...

I'm rarely in the camp that believes a remake is always a terrible idea. But in the case of the Rocketeer, I'm not sure what a new production could do that the original didn't. I find it hard to believe that they could recruit a stronger cast, for example, or write a script that handles the material better. Even the visual effects from the original (presumably the thing that can be updated most impressively) still hold up well.

Edit: Any new version had danged well better include all the words to "Begin the Beguine," as the original does.

The presupposes Starship Troopers has already been made. The existing abortion with that title doesn't count. I'd like to see a movie actually based on the novel.

I quite enjoyed the Rocketeer!

Seeing as how the movie bombed in theaters the first go around, I don't see why this movie should fall into the "dont remake a good movie" group.

Okay, yes, a good movie can still bomb. Maybe this time it won't.

Though...if Disney could do it...

A Captain America, Rocketeer, and The Shadow team up! I want to see that now!

Maybe say Captain America has some adventures we didn't see happen during the war!

A PG13 or R rated animated film version would be pretty sweet. I don't mean, like, nonstop sex'n'violence, but like a good pulpy tarnished gold feel.

Seeing as how lots of classic pulp style movies came about without being in the PG13 or R rated range, why do you think this movie would have to be at that rating to be good?

Not that I'm oppossed to PG13 or R rated movies of any kind, but why does it have to be PG13 or R rated?

For the latter two, at least, see "Cliff's New York Adventure," the second (and last) Rocketeer comic book story by the Rocketeer's creator, Dave Stevens. The name of a certain pulp hero is never mentioned, but his presence is as inescapable as one's guilty conscience.

... how is this a "reboot" and not a "remake"? I was unaware of an ongoing Rocketeer series that is being reset.

Personally I liked the original movie. I particularly liked the makeup job that let Rondo Hatton play the bad guy one more time, 45 years after his death.

The movie's box off take probably wasn't helped by the fact that Terminator 2 came out five days after it did.

A remake would imply some degree of similarity to the plot of the original movie.

I really should do something about this signature.

Dave Stevens' Rocketeer comics are pitch perfect for what they are. And they're visually amazing. The closer they stick to Stevens' original material, the better off they'll be. I'd love to see them go back and revisit this character on the big screen, but be true to what the Rocketeer really is.

Starship Troopers needs a reboot...Maybe this time they can wear the gorilla suits, and actually have a plot that is somewhat like the book.

Starship Troopers can't have a reboot because there's never been a Starship Troopers movie.

Nope.

Never happened.

Uh-uh.

Really? Sweet. I loved the first one, and if they can make another one, with the same tone and action as the Captain America movie, I'd love to watch it.

I agree. Although the real issue is that they've been keeping the Starship Troopers franchise alive with 2 sequels, an animated series and now this latest lame CGI flick which came out this week.

Personally, I'd rather someone made The Forever War instead, which I preferred over Starship Troopers or John Steakley's Armor.
