We used to get FULL debt when we died at level 5! Outside OR inside! And Blasters weren't the only ones grateful to hear the phrase "debt cap".

Oh and don't even get me STARTED on yer fancy rent-controlled bases now! By in MY day, your base rent kept going up if your prestige was growing at ALL!

... zzzzZZZ *ork* Huh?

And we LIKED it that way!

It's not how many times you get knocked down that count. It's how many times you get up.

...and since Respec Trials were actually failable back then, sometimes you were better off just deleting and rerolling. Nowadays, most people's build strategy includes at least one respec.

I just got City Traveler last June. Ever since they announced that the 5 year Vet Reward was City Traveler, I eagerly counted down the months to June 2011 so I would never have to take Hover/Air Superiority and never have to run another Atlas Bank mish for the Raptor Pack.

All that eager anticipation was for naught, b/c just a few short months after that, EVERYBODY could fly at Level 4, get an O-portal at level 14, and teleport to contact.

I also lament the fact that the Paragon Taxi Service (aka Taxibots) is no longer needed as much. I spent most of my first month or two playing in the Hollows (long before the revamp), and every time I exited a mission, I knew I could yell "Taxi!" and someone would be there to get me safely to my next destination.

The Positron Task Force was only slightly shorter than Doc Q, ran you all over multiple zones (without travel powers) and usually required 2 days to complete.

There was no such thing as Invention Origin or Wentworths and Single Origins were the sought after enhancement in game (at least until later 40s when you could head to the hive and battle to obtain Hami-Os. A time when telling someone your character posssessed 1 million in INF was highly impressive and players in their 30s were still buying Double Origin and Training origin enhancers just to have SOMETHING in the slots!

Ahhhh .. back before vet rewards when the only way to respec your character if you messed up was to wait till level 24 and go run a respec trial.

There were no radio or newspaper missions and the ONLY way to level, outside of street hunting, was to run missions from contacts.. contacts that almost always sent you off to another zone to zomplete their tasks .. then you ran back so they could send you off to another zone on the next one! [special note .. see part about no travel powers before 14 above. Run here means ... RUN and usually through areas with street villains conning purple]

Ahhh a real good one .. Back when people begged to join SGs because they had teleporters that could get you to other zones faster!

and here's one that isnt even very old.. Back when you had to wait until 25 level to obtain an Ouroborus Portal and use it as another means to transport quicker.

lol Okay now for something more on the topic of the thread. I have seen but have yet to try this new feature... does seem like it would make it simpler to gain access to a new contact and begin running their missions.

Of course, I can be incredibly stubborn sometimes and love my astronomy. So when only 13% of the world's astronomers decide that a planet I grew up with and came to love for its remoteness and isolation is no longer a planet, I pretty much ignore them. Because I'm like that.

So this thread title makes no sense to me.

And thanks everyone, threads like me remind me of just how long I've spent in the city. Sheesh!

Phase Shift was a toggle that let you still interact with things. (It's the only way I got the Heart of Hami badges.. once.)

There were cone enhancements.

A blaster's nuke only drained end, didn't stop you from recovering it for a stupid amount of time.

DUMPSTER DIVING!

There wasn't a cap on the number of enemies you could take out with your nuke.

No travel suppression.. for those drive-by punch and runs

The only way to get to Founders Falls was to go though Talos.. and you would inevitably be sniped the moment you got in there.

There was no Council.

The best place to level was street sweeping on a team in Perez.

4!!! instances of Atlas Park... but still only one instance of Galaxy.

The Positron TF that let you start it at level 10, but you had a mission in Boomtown, which was a hazard zone for level 12 and higher!

I STILL have the CoH Binder and Guide that was supposed to have new issues available to replace outdated material. (And the CoV one as well)

Citadel was Bastion.

Always built my characters to concept, so:

I had a dark defender back when the healing animation took over 5 seconds, and the heal effect came after the animation. You literally couldn't do situational healing, as the team member would die before you'd finish your animation.

Also took a spines/dark back when Dark Armor was unstackable.

I remember when Stone Tanks were unheard of,and considered the worst of all the tanks, as their armor did not stack either, and they looked like a pile of poo.

The best part was that you were often on a team full of dysfunctional characters.

Didn't the nuke just debuff your base end regeneration to 0, so you'd still regain end if you had stamina but if you didn't you were stuck (it's been so long, I forget). Of course, nearly everyone had stamina.

I still say my favorite was hitting several hundred monkeys at a time with Nova while farming for the zookeeper badge ... stupid 10,000 monkeys.

Never minded that about the Hollows m'self.

Then again, I was/am *extremely* good at running across it as a level 5, diagonally, through the actual hollows, up over the transmission tower, and into the forest at the SE corner... of course, dying there meant going to AP, which sucked a lot back then.

/Won the Death Race 2 because of that skill... and hella planning.
//Oh, and Zwillinger is awesome with that pic.

The Hollows is where I learned that with Combat Jumping you can slide up the War Walls, which makes skirting difficult areas fairly safe and easy.

That last bit hasn't really changed much.

awwww you don't have to miss us.. the taxibots Still exist. not sure what server you are on but there are still active "garages" on Virtue and Infinity. Mind you we don't have as much to do these days.. Raptor packs sort of replaced us. But on virtue we still get together every Friday evening and run TFs. Trials or just missions and always invite along others. You'd be amazed how fast a TF can go when you have 2-3 or more players with the ability to stealth and tp the entire team

But you eventually learned about aggro range running back - yes ?

I miss the old Hollows. Back when i had a taxibot, I once ran to the far far south East (at level 8) because a team of level 13's were too afraid to.

Remember back when we had no IOs but we couldn't buy all the SO we wanted either? Because of the Power Ten rule (or what it was called). Fly, tohit debuff, to hit and endurance drain and endurance recovery (now endurance modification) weren't available at lvl 22 as 25 SOs. You had to wait until later to get them.

Anyone remember that?

I call them by name. I call the IAU a bunch of yutzes.

Its so easy to shoot down the current IAU definition of planet that its practically kindergarden. Just the fact that the definition of "planet" for the solar system and the definition of "planet" for the whole rest of the universe are different, and obviously different to allow astronomers to continue to make the news would be bad enough. But the fact that they are actually contradictory makes the whole thing embarrassing.

(The extrasolar definition states anything smaller than the minimum size necessary to initiate thermonuclear reactions at its core and larger than the minimum size for a planet in the solar system that orbits a star is a planet. But there is no minimum size for a planet in the solar system in the current definition. If Pluto orbited Alpha Centauri instead of the Sun, it would be a planet by definition. It just had the bad luck to form here.)
