So...about tomorrow...
I'll be buying Street Justice anyway, because I have the points set aside for it, but people might not complain as much if things were more reasonably priced.

You guys and gals do realize, that the price will stay where it is, right?
You know why, right?
BECAUSE PEOPLE WOULD STILL GRIPE ABOUT THE PRICE EVEN IF IT WERE FREE.
We have people like that here. Some of them are in this thread right now. If this keeps devolving into a mosh pit over the pricing of new powersets, I ask the Mods to please lock it. This is MORE than pointless, it is OUTRAGEOUS.
EDIT: Lothic, I warn you, my head is a dangerous place to be, you should get out, and quick.
"She gives my ex-wife a run for the money."
With CoV, I paid $30, and got a bunch of stuff other than powersets, but when you break it down, even if all I payed for was powersets, they ran $2 each, as opposed to $10 for these new sets. And with things like proliferation and the roll-in of CoV to the rest of the game, these sets were effectively free (after all, even if I didn't buy anything, my Controller didn't need to pay extra to get Thermal Radiation in the first round of proliferation).

IMPO, it's a better business model than a box set, as they have more direct control over the price in regards to initial price and discounting it whenever they want. People will pay a premium price to have it right out of the door, and others will wait until the price drops and pick it up later. Some players will pay the gouge to have the new shiny NAO.
If you want to blame anybody for the price at launch, look no further than your fellow players who facilitate this strategy
Edit: will I personally be picking this up? Not yet, I don't have a concept for it. But I'd probably pay 800 pts for Titan Weapons, devs, hint hint
Ah, but then again "reasonability" when it comes to pricing is always going to be in the eye of the beholder. Ironically there would be people complaining about this even if the Devs only charged 10 Paragon Points for this.
|
I mean, I'm all for them making money and charging for stuff - I actually had no problem with their price points for the costume codes being sold in the store.
I also have no issues with what they're charging for the extra salvage/enhancement storage or the costume slot prices.
Powersets, in my eyes, are quite different.

On what do you base that statement? Did you pull it from a warm, dark place?

Of course, they could have 100 free sets waiting in the wings, but I find that unlikely.

I will say that I'm disappointed with the price point they've chosen for new power sets. It doesn't compare well with the value received from the earlier expansions, and it was a big part of my decision to pass on Beam Weapons. (The fact that the set was lackluster was also a big part.)
I suspect the 800 point price tag was chosen to offset the VIP stipend. The sets are expensive because we can (if we choose) to buy them at a discount. If so I'm not really happy about that.
But I will be buying Street Justice later today because it was a very good set in beta. I just don't see myself paying this price for too many other sets. $10 is too much for anything but a top-drawer set.

Issue 16 made me feel like this.
Warning: This poster likes to play Devil's Advocate.
We know of five new sets since Freedom was launched. One was free. I know Titan Weapons will be Premium, and we don't know about Staff, but I'm assuming it will be Premium as well. That's 1 Free vs. 4 Premium.
Of course, they could have 100 free sets waiting in the wings, but I find that unlikely. |
Since before this, in order to get a new powerset I would have to wait for a few more months for an Issue, or pay money for an Expansion (Some distant time in the future), I am not bothered by having to wait a few weeks for my next free points to get StJ. (Well, okay, I am bothered, but only because I want to play with it, not because it costs something. And once I start my job again, I will not have to wait as much.)

If over the course of a year, our monthy stipend of Paragon Points gets us as much as we had before (at least), then as VIPs we will have nothing to complain about. Paying for items over and above that is not unreasonable.
If, however, our points don't bring as much value to the table as what we received as subscribers already, then there is room for complaint.
The fact that we can't get everything for free as soon as it hits the market is not an issue. We never received releases this fast before. The idea that they can afford to create even more powersets, costumes, and the like than we received before with the additional revenue is a good thing.
We really won't know what value we have as subscribers until we see how it plays out over time.
* If they lower it to the point that I can just afford things with my monthly stipend of points then it's no longer a money grab, but it would somewhat devalue having moved to a microtransaction model. The model would make sense for Premium accounts, but VIP ones would pretty much be what they always were before.

And for the record, I bought every paid expansion to the game. Bought the collector's editions even (I like the swag). But if every week we're going to have a mini version of a paid expansion, I think that's a bit much. The shiny will wear off that coin pretty quick at this pace.

That's essentially how I feel - VIP accounts should be as they were before. I don't mind that we have a cash shop, or that we have microtransactions. I just don't think VIP subscriptions should have to use it/them. I see I'm clearly in the minority, so this "drama queen" will stop now.

Today, Beam Weapons is something I skipped altogether and won't ever be getting.
Titan Weapons I may also skip, staff melee probably not.
My point is I like that we have choice in what we can and can't get. I don't expect (or need to) buy every single thing they release . . . which is exactly how I treated past boosters.

To Arwen: You didn't bother me. You make sound arguments where others don't.
Last time I'm going to say anything on this, some of you shame me just with your proximity.
City of Heroes is a luxury. If you can't afford it, well, it's not rent. It's not electricity. Or water. Or gas, for your home or your vehicle. It's not groceries.
In short, it is not required. The Developers of Paragon Studios are here to entertain you. If you are not entertained? GO. ELSEWHERE. I cajole and nudge the Devs because I CARE. Because I LIKE this game. Because I am ENTERTAINED. Some here are whining to hear themselves around the silver spoons in their mouths. I am unemployed, and have been for quite some time. Times are tough. If you aren't tough enough to admit to yourself that you can't afford new toys?
Cry me a river. Preferably somewhere ELSE. I am tired of spoiled rotten little kids who are way beyond voting age. Either toughen up and be quiet about your toys being too expensive for you, or do like me, tighten your belt, get what you want, and let the rest go.
QUIETLY.
Because CoH is a TOY. It is just a GAME. There is no excuse for all the infantile crying I see here (AGAIN).
EDIT:
TO Zwill, I've said it before to you, I will say it again. On behalf of my fellow players MANY of whom are AWESOME (tm by War Witch) (not certain if I'm in that category or not but oh well, I know very well I can be a pain)?
I wish to apologize for yet another thread burned down by the bad apples. I am truly sorry. Again, props on the Zero Wing reference, and keep up the good work even when some days go south.

b) It is far better that people do so prior to taking their business elsewhere. As with most issues in life, there is an entire continuum of responses between acceptance without question and complete abandonment.

Having to pay for individual powersets in the Paragon Market is just a different formulation of the same scheme we've already had in this game. Paying for powersets is not a "new" thing - it existed long before the Market came around.
My gripe is the cost at which they are charging for them currently.
As compared to previously set prices, things in the store are stupidly expensive.
