Eureka no more
Season 5 is when they always kill a show if not the first season.
I guess they believe after 5 seasons the contracts will get too high and so they cancel the show or something to that effect. Also they have enough for syndication by the 5th season i believe so there is no reason to keep paying when they can just put out reruns.
Yup, I mentioned this in this week's Eureka/Warehouse 13 thread. That's still one more season and they could end it well, which is better than dragging on or ending suddenly I suppose.

Farewell is like the end

And there you'll always be
-- The Fox and the Hound
I began to lose interest after they did that time travel reboot. It was still better than a lot of stuff out there though.
You can bet Sanctuary and Haven are up on the chopping block as well. Since Eureka and W13 are set in the same universe, it's pretty likely that W13 will go as well.
After all, gotta make room for more reality shows about "psychics", wrestling, and the vehicles for d-list, washed up actors.

The only place you can shop shortened series for syndication are some two-bit cable channels like, you know, SciFi.

The midnight repeat of Robot Chicken had both a higher 18-49 number AND overall viewers than Eureka.
Summertime 8p shows have to contend with lingering daylight. There's an uptick in ratings for W13 at 9p and Alphas has similar numbers to Eureka.
Eureka, possibly because the size of the cast, has always had trouble paying the bills or have we all forgot the season of deodorant. At least Jo's Subaru isn't as "in your face".
Also without Zoe around all the time, it lost it's male teen audience. What teen wants to watch old people in love?
Once again geek fandom can't save a series.

As long as they wrap up the Beverly/Consortium thread, I'll probably be happy. I've wanted closure on that since it was dropped after the second season. Also, I want to know what happened to Callie Curie (who briefly dated Jack then disappeared) and Spencer Martin (who was Henry's assistant and then disappeared).
Goodbye, I guess.

I posted this in the Eureka/Warehouse 13 thread but it seems more fitting here.
Eureka writer Amy Berg posted an explanation for the cancellation on twitter this morning.
Everyone is asking why. It's simple, really. We are the network's golden child in every way, except profit margins. Fact is, Eureka is an expensive show to make and we could not maintain the quality of our show with the cuts it would take to make us profitable for Syfy's new parent company. Our creative execs at Syfy fought hard to keep us. Trust me, they LOVE us. We just couldn't make the numbers work. |
Well that's too bad. I am getting sick of all the romance themes running amuck in the series lately. It's just way too much like As the World Turns for me lately. I watch the show on DVR and have been finding myself fast forwarding through some of the less appealing moments.
Here's to hoping they end the show properly with a good ending.
*sigh* They'll probably add more wrestling, or maybe cage fighting (seems to be the newish trend).
Space shuttle program ends with no decent replacement. Eureka cancelled.
Guess I'll have to get my SF fix playing SF RPGs, but the problem is no one around here runs such games as it's fantasy, fantasy, fantasy. I like elves, and dwarves, and dungeon crawls, but gimme some good ole spaceship TRAVELLERing with blasters drawn at noon on Dodge Asteroid City, too.
(I hate game mastering games so that is not an option)

I kinda wonder if they will do a buffy and blow the town up in the last season?
Be even more ironic that Jack Carter HAS to blow up the town to save the town kinda dealy.
Now we aren't ready quite yet to let the catgirls out of the bag.... (quote from ex libris)
Since the series finale of Eureka was already written and set to start filming tomorrow, Syfy and Universal have given them an additional episode to wrap up the show.

Seems to me, if you've got a winning show, whose concept is too expensive to maintain, you launch a budget-fitting spin-off with a few vital characters and bring the other characters in periodically as guests.
Looks like I'll finally be able to just outright delete SyFy from my Tivo channels now. Never been able to get into WH13 and I decided not to even give Alpha's a shot unless it gets a few seasons in the can (I'm still bitter over Heroes not getting a proper finale and having No Ordinary Family yanked away right off) Make's me less willing to get invested in a show until I know I can get some sort of closure from it.
Eureka has been in the top 3 of my favorite shows since season 1. Sorry to see it go but it was a good run. I just watched last weeks episode last night and the preview for next weeks gave me that uneasy feeling that "Haven't they already done this story?" We've already had an unseen force literally eating the town with the ice core episode, now they'll present Mites/Nanites eating the town as a completly new concept...
Not to mention that it was starting to get predictable in a Tropes kinda way. Within the 1st 5 mintues of the P.A.L. episode I was able to figure out how everything would be wrapped up due to the 'in your face' way they always introduce the
A. New guy/girl that plays a roll in the case.
B. New invention that plays a role in the case and
C. Focus in on side project that always ends up being Jack's brilliant answer (Ala the goo cooling the reactor.)
I mean, it was a good episode and even featured Felicia!! But within 2 minutes of seeing her I already knew her subliminal MP3's would be the catalyst for the episode and etc etc...
So, even though I really love the show. I'm glad they are ending now instead of having another season when the writers start running out of fresh ideas and instead resort to dressing up old shows up in new outfits like next weeks Of Mites and Men.
Farewell Jack, it was a great ride!
