The New Look for Circle of Thorns
2)The leaked photos included some female minions, which is one of the things I actually did like quite a bit about the revamp. Are they still around, or were they dropped to focus on fixing the costumes in general?

Whether or not the NPCs use them is another matter, but at least it would be easy enough to do.
Very cool looks. Vast improvement over the ones from the other thread.
Would like a little less glowing hot pink and a bit more red in the Boss belts. Personal bias against the color... but overall pretty neat.
It'll be interesting to see how the standard tiny Oranbegan hallway will look when full of a bunch of these. I'm envisioning a gigantic, painful, magical porcupine!
68 Level 50s, all made the old-fashioned way.
Original: Quasar Lad - Fire/Kin troller. Latest: Asp Kicker - Grav/Poison troller.
Completed the "Full Alty Challenge" - level 50 in every archetype, and "Alty's Ultimate Power Challenge" - level 50 in every available powerset in the game.

Much better looking now. The hidden faces on the bosses really works, and they feel much more mystical. They are still a bit too spiky for my tastes (Seriously, how does that Ruin Mage move without all the spikes getting hooked together?), but I can live with it. Really a huge improvement, thanks for listening to the feedback.

Howdee friends,
I wanted to take a moment and follow up on Positrons post regarding the Circle of Thorns new look. We are very excited to introduce this modern take on an enemy group near and dear to your hearts. The Art team has worked very hard to update the look while still echoing the original theme. For example, the thorny look you see on the new pieces is based on the spiky elements in the first incarnation of Circle of Thorns. As Positron mentioned, there were some valid points made by you, our players, regarding the re-vamp and we have incorporated much of this feedback into the final look for this enemy group. More importantly though, I wanted to make sure you had a chance to see an assortment of costumes in all their glory. There are literally over 70 costumes associated with this re-vamp so we cant show all of them in one image, but we have picked out ten and put together the line-up for you below. For those of you that want to try this look on your character, some of these costume pieces will be available in the Paragon Market later this year. Here is a list of the changes we are incorporating into this enemy group in an upcoming beta build:

Very cool, especially the bosses.
Due to the "cultist" feel that robes originally gave the Thorn Wielders and Guardians, I still feel strong attachment to them. With that said, I think the concessions made on this pass of the revamp really take the Circle to another level. The Mages truly appear sinister enough to warrant a punch in the space one presumes could have at some point contained a face. Great work!
Veridian Dynamics. Mistakes. We all make them. But sometimes mistakes lead to great discoveries. Mistakes are how we learn and grow... so we can do amazing things.
When you think about it, shouldn't you be thanking us for making mistakes? Veridian Dynamics. We're sorry. You're welcome.
First off: Love the overall look and am beyond happy that the devs took feedback and incorporated it. I guess the main reason i hang around here in the first place.
Second: I really wish bosses were more epic. by that i mean i love that they are more stylish as shown but why not an aura (ghost aura for death for example). also not sure why you chose PINK for the death mage, maybe in orenbega pink represents death but around these parts it would make me laugh not cower in fear.

So the Circus of Thorns was what you were shooting for right? Seriously, this make over is terrible and completely lacks the Lovecraft flavor that the Circle once had.

I like the changes. They look like the sort of clothing a cult of pre-historic mages would wear. As others have noted they are a bit spiky but I actually like it. It gives them a somewhat armored mage-knight look which I think works well for them. While robes are traditional they aren't really practical for battle-field wear and those costumes do manage to capture the essence of what I tend to think a wizard army would wear.
EDIT: I particularly like the "Minion" model. The combination of the body armor and the long cloak works well as a sort of Ceremonial guard look. I can definitely imagine a pair of those flanking a doorway carrying pole-weapons of some description.

I love revamps, but here's another hope that future revamps pay closer attention to the aesthetic of the group. Hellions, Trolls, Skulls, etc.
OMG! How like, totally kewl are these characters?!1
These definitely look as if they were designed for some other game, but they're fine designs. (For those who saw them, I rather preferred Blast_Chamber's.)
In my opinion, they don't capture the feel of a mystical cult that's a foe of superheroes. The costumes are too spiky, too garish in colors, and too busy, especially considering that these are "mooks" who appear in numbers, not characters we fight one-on-one. Rather, as TrueGentleman noted, they look like someone said, "Let's make a magic faction! That means 'fantasy game art!'"
All that said, this is certainly different from nearly everything else in the game, both PC- and NPC-wise, so I see players getting a lot of mileage out of it. Personally, I'm particularly happy to see the interesting and underused "coat tails" rig being used for something other than trenchcoats, Arachnos Widows, and formal tailcoats.
There are two great things about this revamp. First, the devs, through the OCR team, actually paid attention to player complaints, and they paid at the very least lip service to adjusting actual design to respond to them. Second, the players seem to like the designs. Customer loyalty crisis averted!
My hope is that the devs don't take this positive response as a cue to, say, put the Fifth Column in metallic, purple armor.

Getting a real fantasy samurai look/essence from these shots. I like the costumes, of course...who wouldn't? I'm not sold yet on how these will play out in-game, however. I'm trying to imagine these guys wandering the corridors of Oranbega or ancient tombs---not getting the mass appeal <shrug>.
Still, the caliber of artwork/graphics is excellent.

Looking at the minion, there seems to be some strongly suited color contrast tat could be applied to others in the group. Looking at the casters, I'd suggest darkening the leggings by a shade or two. This should make the belts and some of the other pieces stand out more while potentially giving a more shadowed look. Bare minimum it'll add much needed contrast. The blood red on the Energy Mage is perfect but it's possible that the LTs could stand to have that done with the lower body as well. Then again, the Pants -> Chinese clothing piece may be just the right part to add for a more cloth suited look.
The request is to show at least one female member. Due to the SDCC reveal, many are curious and this and wonder how the will fit in.
My question is will named bosses like Baron Zoria be faceless or will they have masks? Some individual important enemies might work best unmasked rather than masking them across the board.
<_< Hey does anyone else think that the Death Mage kinda looks like No-Heart from the Carebear cartoons? (and don't get me wrong, No-Heart was the man, he hated caring)

Q: How many Games Workshop employees does it take to change a light bulb?
A: Three. One to change it, one to wield the chainsaw and one to glue on the spiky bits.

"And I say now these kittens, they do not get trained/As we did in the days when Victoria reigned!" -- T. S. Eliot, "Gus, the Theatre Cat"
A couple of comments about those.
1. For some reason I feel like suggesting swapping the Madness and Death Mage costumes. The Madness Mage has the darker, leaner costume and the Death Mage has the more wild one, and that seems backwards. You almost get the sense the Death Mage's costume is trying to reach out and grab you, and that makes more sense for the Madness Mage in my opinion. You're changing the look of both the Madness and the Death Mage anyway, so there's some latitude there.
2. There doesn't seem to be enough distance between the thorn caster minions and the bosses. The original group had a visual progression of formless robes for the minions, the robes with exposed head for the LTs, and the spiky robes with head dress for the bosses. Here the minion looks kinda close to the LTs, but the caster minions look really close to the bosses. I think that is an important visual cue that will be lost in combat. The casters should probably get shorter, less impressive head gear than the bosses to visually distinguish them.
3. Something about the necks on the LTs looks a little off. I think its the fact that the original costumes obscure the neckline with face gear, but here it looks like they are wearing high necked sweaters. Something about the look feels off to me.
I think its a lot better to see the costumes in progression like this (although were the Force and Soul Mages on a lunch break at the time?) but I think seeing them like this also cues me in to some additional tweaks that I think need to happen to make the costumes work when we're seeing many of them at once, rather than just one at a time.
