The New Look for Circle of Thorns

A Musing Mage

Ok now those are great, specially the bosses!

My only issue with it is how it looks like oranbega has a gym now.
Some of them look really buff.

Maybe tone down the muscles a little?
It's barely noticeable on the bosses, but the casters have SUCH well toned muscles! And I fully expect the minion to go singing Machoman anytime now.

First, many thanks to the devs and the art department for their openness to player feedback and flexibility with this design.

While my first impression still stands, I would like to articulate a few points.

The idea that CoT needs a "modern take" may be the premilinary misstep that sent the redesign in to the wrong direction. As many players pointed out in the earlier thread, the CoT are first presented as having their routes in the late-Victorian magik scene (Theosophy, Aleister Crowley, etc.) and then revealed to have their origins in a mystical lost civilization - none of which counts even remotely as "modern".

For example, the thorny look you see on the new pieces is based on the spiky elements in the first incarnation of Circle of Thorns.
The spikey elements in this redesign still resemble the style of plated armor that has been adopted as standard issue in many other games (going back to the Warhammer tabletop games of the 80s). The original CoT spines looked otherworldly and unnatural as they protruded from the cultists' robes. There was no way to tell if they were part of their costume or if they were somehow part of their skeletons.

Here is a list of the changes we are incorporating into this enemy group in an upcoming beta build:
  • Long garments have been given to all members of this group including the minions.
  • Faces have been obscured across the entire group.
  • Some costume colors have been tweaked and toned down to be closer to the original costumes, but with others we have taken creative liberties.
  • Eye auras have been tweaked to be green on several costumes.
These are all welcome changes and steps in the right direction. These basic adjustments have improved the quality of the redesign several times over.
Thanks again to the art team for these redesigns - we're grateful that our criticisms have been taken constructively.

Muuuuuuuuch better.

I like the pope-hats, they lend to the iconic aspect.
I can see how some folks might see "another game's influence" in the layered spikyness, but I think it works just fine. They are, after all, called the Circle of Thorns.
I also like the loincloth/buttcape as a substitute for the robes. Long garments also lend to the iconic CoT profile.
I'm fine with the "artistic license" for the colors. Makes it easy to pick out which one you want to smack down first.

Thank you for listening to your players.

I'm more or less on the side of true gentleman here.

Personally I would simply like to know why the new redesign at all? Is it to impress the new kids that will be joining us come freedom?

The new designs, while not total eye sores, almost have a sense to me of old folks trying hard to be hip and impress the kids.
There is something dignified and very silver age about the old COT and something very 90's and image comics about these; "omg spikes, spikes and shoulder pads everywhere." All they lack is a plethora of chains.

Just curious really, as I don't honestly see the need for a change.

The pope hats do make me smile though. I'm certain, It'll feel like I'm punching the daylights out of some strange bizarre offshoot of the catholic church...

They'll just be a little more ~fabulous!~

I mentioned this somewhere else, but I'm cool with this. These are a people who can literally pick what they want to look like out of a crowd. What reason to they have to only choose aged, broken down bodies when they can pick someone young and healthy, and have the benefits of a strong body without having to work for it. (aside from the kidnapping)

I can only hope that crazy back... spine... thing on the Death Mage is available as a purchasable. In color and structure he and the Energy Mage scream awesome. Or maybe they moan it. Or chant in phrases best never heard by human ears. This is overwhelmingly better then what was shown before: Ancient and alien, and almost buglike.

The Art team has worked very hard to update the look while still echoing the original theme. For example, the thorny look you see on the new pieces is based on the spiky elements in the first incarnation of Circle of Thorns. As Positron mentioned, there were some valid points made by you, our players, regarding the re-vamp and we have incorporated much of this feedback into the final look for this enemy group. More importantly though, I wanted to make sure you had a chance to see an assortment of costumes in all their glory. There are literally over 70 costumes associated with this re-vamp so we can’t show all of them in one image, but we have picked out ten and put together the line-up for you below. For those of you that want to try this look on your character, some of these costume pieces will be available in the Paragon Market later this year. Here is a list of the changes we are incorporating into this enemy group in an upcoming beta build:

Not a big fan. Colors look good but it all just looks too pointy. I wish it was toned down more...

I'm impressed. This is leaps and bounds better than "Spandex and spikey shoulder pads", and greatly appreciate that the devs took to heart some of our biggest concerns, such as the green eye glow and making them faceless.

They're a millennia-old all-male secret society that has been know to wear dresses and skirts from time to time - what makes you think they wouldn't have a gym down there and like to work out?

Agreed. The minion look is too elaborate for my taste, and I would like to see the brown return.

The Thorn Casters aren't bad.

The Energy and Life Mages--I'd call them absolutely bang-on. Cool updates while retaining the fundamentals of their classic looks. I'm interested to see what Soul Mages will look like now.

The boss-class mages? Much improved over the former attempt, but I find them too busy. Especially the Death Mage, who seems to be compensating for something. Also, they all appear to be wearing glowing purple pansies on their belts. I can't say that really screams "ancient menace".

Perhaps all the pointy bits are their way of saying "Oh god, oh god, not in the face, not in the face." Sort of a porcupine defense? Made of fragile, fragile garments. besides if you're society was composed of fragile, undead bookworks, perhaps this is their way of looking all that more imposing when they attend hogwarts or something.

Also? Some of the screen caps makes it feel like they should be wielding instruments and they've just stepped on stage. Ladies.. and demons... CIRCLE. OF. THORNS!!!!!!! *Guitar blast* OHHHHHHHHH YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

Positron spoke about this subject on both Ustream and in the now locked thread: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showp...&postcount=328

You see, the original Circle of Thorns were one of the very first enemy groups ever done for City of Heroes. That puts their models over 9 years old now, and they look absolutely dated compared to anything we have done today. We had time to address only some of the outdated models, and since CoT is a level 1 to 50 enemy group, it seemed to us as an obvious choice to make. We wanted to make them feel more magical, spiritual, thorny, spiky, and most of all, evil, and I think Dave and Jay knocked it out of the park in that regard. For an enemy group you see cropping up as often as the CoT, we wanted to make them feel significant and be visually striking.
Granted, the costumes shown off at Comic-Con were anything BUT a knock out of the park. To use the baseball term, it was a bunted foul.

Kind of subjective here. Keep in mind that at 9 years old, the CoT would have been originally designed back in 2001 or 2002, and rendered in probably 2002.

The current costumes, for what they are, were likely the best effects that could be achieved back then.

One of the factors to keep in mind is that Video Games are, at their core, simply representations. On some levels we accept that "insert rendered object here" is supposed to look like "insert real object here"

Quote:
Just curious really, as I don't honestly see the need for a change.
Both design and technical reasons are in effect here.

The technical reason is that the Cot's old "robe" design was a cheat in the rendering system.

The design reason is that now with the tools available, the in-game CoT can be closer to the mental picture of the CoT, but the design still has to fit the technical limitations.

Updating the costumes to use the newer tech that has been developed in the past 9 years meant dropping some of the costume cheats. Unfortunately, that means that a significant number of costumes have to be completely changed.

Which is where we get into "the original changes didn't look anything like the old costumes"

The costumes proposed here are, at the very least, now reminiscent of the old designs, even if the robe-effect is once again achieved through a cheat in costume design.

Then it sounds like this time the Art Guys hit the right target.

Ooh, I'd like to see this. Plenty of CoT rooftop victims are female, stands to reason a body is a body when you haven't had one for thousands of years...

Oh, you-mean-that-picture-that-was-circulated-around-the-internet-that-was-taken-by-someone-on-their-cell-phone-and-wasn't-an-image-released-by-marketing-that-everyone-then-judged-the-whole-new-costume-set-by?

You place the blame on Devs for that?

Well, although it was fuzzy, it still clearly showed a lack of robe-like coverings for their buff butts - and their faces weren't hidden like these new ones either
