Dark Armor, or why do I have to be sparky vampire mist?

I've just spent the morning not trying to have my new /DA stalker look like sparkly vampire mist to no avail.

I just think that it's a bit daft that in this age where we've had power customization, combat auras, the soon to be power emitter customization, and the ability to turn off FX in other powersets (hint hint) DA still looks like sparkly vampire mist.

The main offender is Hide (or its non-stalkery equivalent CoD), which engulfs the player in a thick layer of mist whenever he or she so much as takes a step. The sparkles come from Obsidian Shield, and there's no way to turn off the sparkles, only be slightly less sparkly.

I understand that some of the devs want powers to retain certain unique looks to set them apart from others, but every DA char ends up looking more suited to a Twilight fanfic than running the full spectrum of being subtle or terrifying like what DA could be.

The who what?

Also, never noticed the sparkles. Did you try tinting them black so that they looked like EVIL sparkles?

I believe the OP is referring to i19 and the Blast Power discharge point customization there in.

Looks fine to me.

I'll be honest, I think I did see the "sparkles" you mentioned, but I never really noticed them until you pointed them out. They're pretty understated.

Doesn't really matter, does it?

Power customization lets you turn the visuals for that armor off, right? Or is it just the hide/cloud part? I cannot remember if the sparkles drop too.

Just the fade/invisible thing. The costume creator seems to pronounce the sparkles more, though, since you are zoomed in pretty close.

And yes like I also said in the first post if you read it, it matters in the sense that if I wanted to create a DA character who subtly harnesses the darkness, or has all the loud effects minus looking like a low-flying cloud, I don't get a choice on the matter.

Edit: Don't get me wrong, I'd still play the set, and I'm probably sounding a lot more cranky about the whole thing than I am, but DA is an eyesore, and as has already been mentioned in this thread already there are players who refuse to play it because of that alone. I can't speak for the devs, but I'd be pretty bummed if I knew one of the powersets in my game were not being taken because people think it looks terrible.

My apologies, I apparently read the post incorrectly - seems like you were saying 'why can't we?'...

I read it again, and I guess I do not understand your point... I have some darks that are all cloudy and sparkly and some that aren't (color selection matters with this one a lot - and you can set the one power to a different setting). Seems like it fits your desires fine, and I love the way dark armor looks as is.

*shrug* I'll move along all.

Dark Armour does have a minimal FX option.

Or it did when I last made 2 characters using it a month or so ago/

The sparkles actually come from Murky Cloud. However, I agree they do look a bit out of place. Personally I've never been that bothered by them, but I have been on the receiving end of the odd Twilight joke. Of course that soon stops when you're an 8 foot tall juggernaut of high octane nightmare fuel.

Also, DA was around and sparkly WAY before that hack ever thought of Edward Cullen and his wussy ilk. DA > Twilight!

Color it light brown and it sorta looks like you're in a sand cloud.

And others are perfectly fine with it. If they tried making a set everyone was 100% happy with, we'd have - wait, let me figure this out, carry the 7... zero sets.

FWIW, I have a DA/DM tanker for whom I picked the fade-out variety of Cloak. I have:

* Death Shroud: Fuschia/Green
* Dark Embrace: Cyan/Lime
* Cloak of Darkness: Fuschia/Magenta
* Obsidian Shield: Yellow/Orange
* Murky Cloud: Blue/Green
* Oppressive Gloom: Blue/Red
* Omega Aura: Full body, all the time, medium-dark purple

All are taken with the brightest full-saturation color available, except the omega aura, which turns whitish if you have it too bright.

Captain Chroma is, shall we say... visible.

I do particularly love that the stealth effect makes him shockingly bright fuschia when he runs.

I'll have to get him into a dark room (where you can see him better) or bright daylight (where the colors really pop) so I can post pics.

/bind KEY "SuppressCloseFX 1$$SuppressCloseFXdist 300"

work for this?

I have not tried it with Dark Armor...

I think some of the initial replies didn't quite understand and/or were wrong about a few things... (EDIT: Combined with the fact that the OP possibly mentioned the wrong powers. Murky Cloud is the sparkles!)

Incorrect. No, you can't just turn off the visual effects for Dark Armor (Or any of the elemental/physical energy type stuff).
I, personally don't want to see a NO FX option for any such powers (Inv, WP and SR are great for that though!).
However, I would love to see an optional effect for Dark Armor's Murky Cloud.
I agree, in a completely reasonable tone, that they feel out of place within the set. And I have always felt that way, before Power Customization.

Yes, the effect can be lessened a bit, with Power Customization, however it cannot be removed. The sparkling cloud of Murkiness will sparkle.
Not a major complaint or anything... But I give a resounding YES to the idea of providing a non-sparkly option for Murky Cloud... without hesitation!

I'm somewhat surprised by the initial reactions of others... Not noticing the sparkles of Murky Cloud?
Maybe if you have particle effects turned way down in your graphics options?

I have a friend who has his turned all the way down, and confusion often comes up between us (I have mine all the way up) when discussing how some things look.

To some, perhaps. I've got four DA characters, I think. Looks great to me. It's one of the ones I have the most fun customizing, because it's such a visual powerset that there's a lot you can do with it. But I used it before customization came along, too.

Yes, you can. But only for Cloak of Darkness. Which means that Dark Armor Stalkers still fade out like all other stalkers do. But Scrappers, Brutes and Tanks all have the option of not fading out.

Scrappers, Brutes and Tanks have an option to not look like a big cloud with Cloak of Darkness. I think that's what they meant.

Personally, I'm not really for any of the elemental sets getting a "no visual FX except in PvP" option.

That's not to say I'm not for different visual effects however.
