Back Alley Brawler gone?

Given BaBs quietness from the start of the year and now this I reckon there he must have been have been on another project which has now been shelved. Reading TheOchos recycled HR post in the other thread seems to support that theory too. That is all of course a total and complete guess on my part.

Edit :Good post SilverAgeFan

In any case farewell BaBs, you did some great work and were always an entertaining poster. Hope you find a new position worthy of your talents elsewhere.

He didn't like me at all, but as a person I wish him nothing but the best and I hope he and the others laid off land on their feet and hit the ground running.

So, who is taking over for BaB's? O.o

I'm sure Christopher Bruce will have a goodly choice of jobs waiting for him

He's just that good

Damn it, now I'm depressed. Chris was one of the nicest devs at PS - for me at least, he was generous with his time and help in working with his animations in demo files, making suggestions for models and animations, ways to improve models and ragdoll stuff in my vids, and so on.

Still, clear skies and safe landings wherever he ends up.

Correct. I expect some layoffs as being possible after an expansion or new game tho of course I would hope otherwise. I've been around a lot of them working for EA but they usually result in QA/CS staff or a few extra devs, not well established, long term devs. But then again during lay off times people usually have the option to take a severance package voluntarily which is something I did. So perhaps that happened and it was a mutual parting of ways. We can speculate all day and in the end if BaBs is gone then I stand by my post - good luck, BaBs.

Oops, I forgot to wish Chris Bruce well. I'll fix that here.

He did terrific work for CoH and as mentioned earlier, was the champion behind power customization, a huge undertaking. If he has moved on, for whatever reason, here's to his continued success wherever he ends up.

The fun part is, it'd be Galaxy City. That's how you know that everyone there is there for the ceremony.

My recommended details:

Justice server, 7:15 PM (Pacific Time)
I'll see you there Marcian.

For those that have difficulty with the time differences, it breaks down as follows:

10:15 PM Eastern, 9:15 PM Central, 8:15 PM Mountain, 7:15 PM Pacific, 4:15 PM Alaska-Hawaii Thursday

Unfortunately, I'm not adept at converting to European time zones or Australian or New Zealand time zones.

I'll attempt it though.

Brazil (Brazil Time) 11:15 PM Thursday
London (UTC or British Standard Time) 3:15 AM Friday
Paris (Middle European Time?) 4:15 AM Friday
Western Australia and the Phillipines (Java Time) 10:15 AM Friday
Central Australia (Australian Central Time) 11:15 AM Friday
Eastern Australia (Australian Eastern Time) 12:15 PM Friday
New Zealand (New Zealand Time) 2:15 PM Friday

I hope I didn't mangle any of those time zones too badly.

I hope to see you all there.

So long Chris, best of luck in the future.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

I read that comment differently. I read it purely as denying being the source of the news leak, and as non-explicit confirmation that yes, he has left/laid off

When in doubt, just say "X hours from now".

And on the main topic... I'll wait for solid info before making any guesses.

This just blows.

Even if BaBs was offered a bigger and better position elsewhere with a huge pay-raise, it's still a tremendous loss for all of us.

And as much as I love Mod8, the fact that he's forced to muppet out Marketing's canned party response is salt in the wound.

Indeed. It was remarkable to see PS go from 15 Devs (+4 Production) to over 80 employees. I thought they were going to cap at 60, but they kept hiring aggressively steadily EVEN THROUGH THE GREATEST RECESSION SINCE THE GREAT DEPRESSION. That should say something.

I'm pretty sure they hired extras and got some NCSoft Staff (like Tex) to hunker down and get GR done.

Losing (a rumored) 9 out of 80 is nothing. Sorry for those 9, but, for the long term effects on CoH, it's nothing. Time to trim the payroll and enjoy the extra sub money GR brought in.

No doom.

It was Statesman who said we lost about 2,000 over ED. But since CoV came out at the same time, subs skyrocketed and the loss of those 2,000 became invisible on the graph of subs. Statesman said of all the forum /ragequit storms, ED was the only one that they saw had a real affect on the number of subs. (That was before the PvP ragequit storm and any speculation of the amount of actual loss in that case is unfounded speculation.)

Regardless of any reasons behind it, truth or rumor, this saddens me deeply. BaBs was, in my opinion, one of the best developers in this game. Not only for the time, sweat, and blood he put into the game, but also for his community interaction. Even if there was something that was implemented in the game, and you didn't understand the how and why of it, you could PM him and he would take the time to answer and explain. But also, because he was by far one of the coolest dev's. You are by far my favorite dev, and your presence has been missed for a while. I will never be happy stalking another redname as I was stalking you! Thank you BaBs for all the fun on the Justice server forums in the past, you will be missed (even more).

Definitely.

Infact I'll port it over to the Justice forums and MoTD it in JFA.

As a note, my idea to meet and honor those let go can be found on this thread.

It's too bad when game companies make a huge push to get their next big release out and then lay off everyone involved as soon as they are done with them. Especially when it happens to someone who's been with the company for so long. Happens a lot in the games industry, especially in the holiday season. Publishers push their dev studios into 60 hour weeks for months leading up to release, and then can them all just in time for Christmas.

In the case of BaBs, it seems like he stopped posting long before GR hit, so it may have even been before then. I noticed months ago that he stopped posting because he usually posts multiple times a day.

on qr, because i just got home from work. still taking it in, will post more later, not happy, really unhappy, i can see laying off a newer hire, or someone who is an unknown quantity, but babs was a major part of the game and the community. I'm holding myself back from some very unpleasant conjunctures, i just need to calm down.

but you know what, celebrate the man, not the passing. Babs is why i'm still here, power customization and alternate animations were a big differentiator between this game and just about any other game. also, on a personal note, he had a strong way with the community, he often gave us the straight dirt without prspeak, and had a biting sense of humor. that upset babies, but it made his posts both informative and funny, like george carlin reading "a brief history of time" and in several unpleasant times (like the infamous rockjaw incident) he and castle probably overstepped their bounds professionally, but they made a big difference in reaction and (unlike the community relations guys) calmed down a incendiary forum. he and castle probably got in trouble for that because too many executives have no clue about how humans think anymore. be was a great dev, a fun person and did top notch work, the game will be poorer in his absence. it stinks for nelson and the new guy, because they didn't do this, but now they have to follow babs, and this is not a happy welcome.

I really, really hope this isn't what some call "streamlining" the company.

I actually think BAB said that.

And if not, it's only tradition. Most falsely attributed quotes end up being attributed to BAB.

To those laid off: thank you for your work, and good luck with your future employment opportunities. I obviously don't know the circumstances, so I have no judgment to pass on Paragon Studios or the employees let go, but seeing BAB leave feels like the end of an era, particularly because of the devotion he's had to the game and the community in the past.

As time goes on, I guess we all have to accept the fact that nothing lasts forever. I'm not particularly good at that.

Sad to read that BaBs is most likely gone

I, along with the other posters mentioned, miss BABs posts. I did see "him" online last night....*sigh*....

I'm hoping that he was 'let go' from CoH to work on CoH 2 but....I doubt that.

Good luck to you BABs!
