Do you have some personal problem with David Nakayama? You seem ridiculously hostile.

Bless you, Ocho. I feel better already!

I remember when he appeared. Good egg.

I had originally posted this in another thread as a joke.

Considering this current news I re-link it here as a memorial.

We have no idea if this wasn't a joint decision. In fact we have no details about what exactly went down. For all we know BaBs selected to leave and or is being moved to something else. They could have decided months ago that his job would be removed after Going Rogue launched.

So I wouldn't jump to conclusions that something horrible or evil happened.

I think its more shame on whoever did the tip off. They're stirring up the pot nothing more. BaBs did cut off his community contact on his own awhile ago.

No, absolutely not. I like his efforts to interact with the community and he's a friendly, likable guy. He's also a shill and a ham, and if you feel its ridiculously hostile for me to point that out, or to interpret his comment earlier as brushing Babs under the rug a bit, then that's fine.

It is too bad that they did not release a statement to inform the player base...I know it is not our business but lay offs are never seen as a good thing and if they presented it to us it would not feel like they were trying to allow it to slip by us and hoping we wouldn't notice...

History has shown that the team was re-aligned after City Of Villains so this does not fill me with fear that the game is in dire circumstances...the photo that was presented in one of the two threads about this topic shows quite a large team and once Going Rogue was released and stable...they may not need a team of that size to sustain the game going forward...

I do agree that we will highly miss BaBs...he was one of the more vocal members of the Dev team to interact with us on the forums...and not just about game discussion...if he saw a thread that caught his eye ...he would post ...it made him feel like he was one of us...that it wasn't "us" vs "them"...Chris did a great job of bridging the gap...

There are other things that would alarm me more about the health of the game and Paragon studios...if we saw server mergers...issues being more infrequent and with less content...the game not being offered at retail locations going forward...these all would make me think "DOOM!"...

Good luck BaBs...you will be missed buddy!

Were you there when the decision was made?

Sorry to pick your post for this, but it serves no purpose to lay blame if you don't know the background and proceedings of how this came about in regards to those involved.
I don't know them. They do. And they have no obligation to tell us.

I've worked on numerous projects. They always end with people leaving, either hired or company, people are leaving. Heck, I even worked to get myself out of my job in one project once..

Projects end. That's the nature of them. If they don't, you did it wrong...

Thanks for the re-assurance Ocho...I honestly and sincerely mean that...I think we were all just caught a little off guard with it being broken by an outside source...

I'm pretty sure that's just mindless conjecture, since you're the only one saying anything about it.

Edit: I stand corrected! But nonetheless stand by what I've said.

Quick Question: Would anyone be up for meeting on a server tonight, going to Galaxy City, and hanging out as a way of paying homage to Back Alley Brawler?

The fun part is, it'd be Galaxy City. That's how you know that everyone there is there for the ceremony.

My recommended details:

Justice server, 7:15 PM (Pacific Time)

Well, it's quite posisbel that after over half a decade of workign no the game he simply wanted a change and a new challenge - or could even be a financial reason - someone with his talent would be valuable to any other dev team, so he could have gotten a very tempting offer.

I found them on the same level as Golden Girl, but I chose to stay out of it. Since you were taking my silence as complacency, however, I now correct you.

What is the point to counter-rant in a thread that's mainly aimed at expressing regrets about someone leaving?

It serves no purpose whatsoever to go off on people that had no part in his leaving.

Well since a shill is someone who is paid to blow rainbows and sunshine up people's arses, I'm not quite sure what other meaning is trying to be conveyed here. Either Dave is sincerely a nice guy, or he's only being nice because he's being paid to do so. I agree it's an odd position to hold.

Folks need to slow down a moment. IF BABs is indeed gone, a few things to keep in mind:

  • Laid off is not the same thing as fired, not by a longshot.
  • Laid off is not always a hostile parting, in fact sometimes it is quite amicable.
  • Related, I have seen a few occasions where honorable employees who are ready to move on will essentially "jump on a the layoff grenade" for their fellow workers. Details I have witnessed included:
    • Senior employees aware that either they go or three people from their department go to make budget lines doing so out of protest and a protective sense
    • Employees with other opportunities and offers already waiting in the wings making things easier on their bosses. (For some bosses layoffs are the toughest part of their job. Period.)
    • Accepting a nice severance for volunteering to retire early or take the layoff for the team, conveniently coming at a time when said employee is already ready for a change (either of career, employment status, or just three months off)

In other words, if he was laid off, there is a whole lot of none-of-our-business (good or bad) behind the situation. BABs has done some great work over the years during his tenure with CoX. And even if he wasn't laid off, think about it, 5 or so years is a Looooooong time to hold a position in as dynamic an industry as his.

In time, I'm sure we'll learn the truth of this rumor regarding his status. But for now folks, slow down a little on this one.

Upon reflection, I think... I hope he is heading to Carbine Studios. Some good eggs there, too, and I'd like to collect the devs I have an appreciation for in one spot.

But like with all games, they don't need everyone who works on an expansion after the expansion is released.
As I mentioned earlier, GR neeed a lot of zone work, because it was giving us 4-6 new zones - but as we won't be getting 4-6 new zones in the upcoming Issues, the people who worked on the GR zones aren't all needed now - and the same with all the people who worked on Ultra Mode - now that it's done and added to the game, not all of them are needed anymore either.
The upcoming Issues are not GR-sized, so there's no need for a GR-sized team to work on them.

10:15 EST? Yeah, I could make a lowbie tribute character. But do we have confirmation yet of his departure? I think it would be fitting before organizing an in game "funeral."

Plus think of all the eMalt Liquor that would be wasted if we prematurely pour it on Galaxy City concrete.

Sad Lemur. I'm pretty sure this is from the "Oil Slick? WTF!" night. If not, the night before.

Gonna miss you, talking to you was always insightful.
