What drew you to CoX?
I saw an article about it on SomethingAwful, which was one of the very few positive articles these guys ever posted. I remembered seeing that old "Where YOU are the hero!" trailer and remembered I'd always meant to try the game, but had forgotten it existed, what with the original announcement being three years before.
I spent quite some time making sure the game was actually worth paying money for, as I was (and still am) very apprehensive of MMOs because of their boring, grinding, over-complicated nature, but I was happy to find out that City of Heroes wasn't really very much like an MMO at all.
Besides, in all the screenshots I saw, I never found two identical characters, which completely blew my mind.
*edit*
As to what drew me to CoX, I'm afraid can't say for fear of being modsmacked.
Samuel_Tow is the only poster that makes me want to punch him in the head more often when I'm agreeing with him than when I'm disagreeing with him.

Scarily enough it was through work. Got transferred to a new team and the guys there kept talking about this game they played. I hadn't played an MMO before. Though my kids played WoW and a couple of others, I'd never progressed beyond Lemmings. Eventually I got up the courage to buy CoH/V and with the amused assistance of my sons managed to work out the controls and find I quite enjoyed it. Teaming with the guys in the evenings and then discussing it over coffee breaks the next day was the most enjoyable team building exercise I've ever done
I started in the EU beta in very early 2005, when a friend from another MMO I was finishing playing told me about the beta. I made an Energy/Energy Blaster, and had quite a lot of fun. I particularly liked the costumes, and lack of PVP and gear.
Nowdays I don't mind gear and PVP so much, but I stay for the costumes, the roleplaying and the friends I've made, though currently I'm a little meh towards the game thanks to the whole silence regarding the party pack.
Individuality. Simple as that. While I obviously enjoy the Superhero genre, I am pretty open to the setting, from high fantasy to steampunk to science fiction, I don't really have a preference.
In CoH however, I could look how I wanted, and not be forced into a look by the items I wear. This is a huge thing for me, I am so spoiled these days that I pass on games with minimal or no customization (if applicable of course), online or single player.
The fast game play, the animation, the freedom to solo (I played Final Fantasy Online before that, where soloing past level 10 is pretty much pointless) the general art style, the instancing etc. helped of course, but yeah, what first drew me into it that I can completely decide how I want to look, regardless of class and gear.
I was on a break from gaming. I was pretty irritated with DAoC with the release of ToA. I put so much in that. Anyhow, I saw this game come out and waited to see what the reviews were like.
Come 4th of July weekend for 2004, I picked up a copy. I kept to myself and didn't want to team with people. Even back then it was a great way for me to decompress from the day and wanted to stay solo. And this is why my start date and forum join date are so far apart. Anyhow, this game was just great for me to get away from it all, and especially there were no elves or magic spells, etc. anywhere. Some people seem to don't believe me that my first toon created (DM/regen scrapper) tooks months to level since she solo'd to 39 in the olden days.
Then I ran into the Terra AV arc and couldn't defeat the AV. So I sucked it up and asked a player in Talos if he could help me. He was a dark/dark def. The AV fell shortly afterwards. After thanking him for his help, I rolled a D3 def, who is still one of my favorite toons today.
It took 9 months to get to 50 with my scrapper. I couldn't imagine it taking that long nowadays. But thanks to the dark def, whom I can't remember the name anymore , I got more into teaming and such.
I had grown tired of fantasy themed MMOs. I always liked super heroes and CoH began to spark my imagination.
It took me a little longer than it shoud have to finally give CoH a try, but it was inevitable...and worth it.
I don't remember how, but I came across a screenshot of an electricity-based superhero that was obviously taken in a game of some sort. Curious, I went to where the screenshot had been posted, and found myself in a thread on some forum that was probably shut down long ago. The thread was full of people comparing screenshots of heroes that they'd supposedly made. Themselves. I was amazed that people could use the same tool to make all these different characters, all of which were so different from eachother.
Needless to say I looked up what this game was, and started a trial that very day. When it came to Europe, I started my proper account. Here I am, still enjoying that same game.
So yeah, it may be somewhat cliché, but the costume creator drew me to this game.
I used to think the only MMO ever was Everquest, and that was because I read webcomics. Well, I'm a massive comic book fan, so everywhere I went online people were talking about this game coming out, City of Heroes. I thought the idea of paying money EVERY month to play a game you owned so insane, but I wanted to make my own heroes. I lucked out and got into beta, where I met some great people and had a blast.
We all decided to buy the game and start an SG on Pinnacle, where I remain to this day, still playing my Beta character as my namesake. Love this game so much!
Prior to launch, I had my eye on the game. This was before I started lurking in forums, or posting. I knew Marvel was working on one at the time as well, but, we know where that went. I was playing EQ1 and FFXI at the time, and I started Co* at launch. I was in love right off the bat.
Despite some disappointments, (changes in the game during beta I had not been aware of until the game launched) it gave me an almost perfect feel of being a hero. There was no PvP, no grinding for loot, and it was fast paced.
My wife started playing as I started playing more Co* and less of our other games. She has really enjoyed herself, despite the initial idea. It allows for her playful creative side.
My girlfriend at the time (now my wife) was heading off around the world for 6 months, so I needed something to do. This was late i3, start of i4 (i4 was my first Issue, which kinda sucks )
Of course she's been back for years now and I'm still playing.
In 2005, I was starting to tire of the online racing that I was doing, and began looking for other games to play. After playing a few game and finding the same theme over and over, one day I walked into Gamestop and lo and behold, I saw that black box with Lord Recluse on it. Upon reading the box, my reactions were What??? I get to be a bad guy??? are they kidding me??? for real??? YES!!!!
I've been here ever since.

"Silly villain, CoX is for Heroes!" -Saicho
I saw the review on the Something Awfull Forums. I bought it the next day. When I logged in, and showed up at the base of the stairs in Atlas Park, and saw heroes Flying, and Zipping about with SJ/SS, I was hooked.
This game is my first, and only MMO. Playing as an elf never appealed to me.
OMG I love this thread hahah...
1. In beta, I made a toon in the Character Creation, spent 6 hours in there. Then I wanted to fly already. So I was like, "Hey, how do you fly?," "Pssst, how do you fly?," "OMG how do you fly?!!!" Story short, I got hooked wanting to fly... This was my first Game and MMO game.
2. City of Villains came out later, it got me more hooked. I stayed in Rogue Isles and never made a Hero ever again. Now 72 Month Vet!
3. PvP made the game so much fun, well back in the day at least. I would PvP in SC, RV, WB, sometimes BB... I would not realize what time it is because it was so much fun! Now everyone is just funny because they think they are 1337, me and my bf would laugh so hard when someone is trying to be cocky and s***t. Good times. I still PvP now when I get sick of tips missions...

Well, first off, you REALLY need to change this thread's title. Out of context it doesn't sound right at all. If you don't get what I'm referring to.....say it out loud, pronouncing CoX as the letters would indicate.
That aside, I was drawn to the game because I've been a comic book geek for most of my life, ever since my dad let me read his Green Lantern and Iron Man comics as a kid. I'm constantly coming up with ideas for superheroes, and since I'm really crappy at drawing, the game is the only place I can bring my ideas to life.
I also met my wife in the game. We were in the same SG and teamed a lot, and got to know each other over the course of a year and a half or so. We decided that since we had so much in common we should meet in person. And it just clicked. Our first child is due any day now
I'm mostly still playing because of all the friends I've made in the game. A lot of them are just glorified acquaintences, but a few of them have become good friends (We invited a couple of them to our wedding, none of them made it, but the fact that we invited them says a lot)

Way back in the day on a 3rd party Everquest site, people were talking about the "new" MMORPGs coming out... Dark Age of Camelot, Anarchy Online, etc. Someone linked to an early City of Heroes site saying "I'm just waiting for THIS!". I remember the top had some animated scroll of different characters and the whole thing was very primative looking but fascinating at the same time. I'm not a big comics/superhero fan but the idea of playing a new MMORPG that wasn't fantasy oriented was also interesting (especially with the bomb that was AO). I wasn't compulsive or anything and didn't try to beta it but I followed along for the year or two until the game was released and picked it up. Been playing on and off since then; originally switching back and forth with other games but for now I'm pretty much rooted to CoH. Compared to the early days, it's really a golden age for the game.
I used to play the PnP version of Champions back in the '80s and I loved making up costumes for my characters. I used to use a piece of tracing paper to copy the body outline and musculature of chracters in the Off. Handbook of the Marvel Universe and then make copies of the blank characters on a Xerox machine.
When I first saw CoH on the shelves at Circuit City (this was before CoV came out) I almost bought it just to play around with the costume creator. Then I found out I had to subscribe to the game and pay $15 a month. I had no real interest in playing video games so I didn't buy it because I wasn't going to pay $15/month to play with the costume creator.
Several years later I had some Circuit City rewards points I had to cash in, so I used them to get the GvE edition and figured I would try the free month and then cancel it if I got bored with it - no home video game had been able to hold my attention for more than 2 weeks at that point.
Here we are almost 3 years later and I still play 3-4 days a week.
(Sometimes, I wish there could be a Dev thumbs up button for quality posts, because you pretty much nailed it.) -- Ghost Falcon
I had never heard of CoH and I had been playing SWG for a couple years up until the beta for LotRO. After almost a year of LotRO and getting a bit bored I heard about CoH and checked out the free trial. CoH sounded awesome since I have always read comics and liked MMOs. It took a week after that to sub in SEP07 and been here on and off ever since.
I got on after Villains went live, the WOW community was really very negative and I was getting tired of spending so much time on my few toons. CoX is just so much better IMHO, gameplay and community together.
I was relieved of my previous position for telling the truth. Now I make my living translating the lies of other men.

First time I ever even knew the game existed was in 07...saw the good vs evil edition in walmart. Picked it up...first computer game I ever bought.
My daughter started playing City Of Heroes back in Feb 2005, I occasionally watched her play. Then one day she allowed me make a new character on her account. I got hooked and made my own account 20 minutes later.
I'm old. I started RPG's back in 1978 with Dungeons and Dragons. My first computer was a Timex Sinclare 1000.
I've played tons of MMORPGs and pen and paper RPGs over the decades. I was a fan of Champions back in the day (with friends) and when CoH came out... we had to play.
I played for several months at launch then took a multi year break as I played other games with friends. I just came back this summer to CoX. It is simply an AMAZING game.
A friend made me. I didn't really have a choice.
I was never interested in MMOs or the genre (not interested in the Fantasy genre either...), but I did like sci-fi stuff, and having the option to play to that probably helped. Anyway, the actual story...
My friend Joe is a gamer. I am not so much of a gamer. But playing games online with friends is always fun, so he would keep bugging me to get certain games until I caved. Even though I have pretty much no interest whatsoever in extreme sports, because of him I ended up tagging along to the tune of most of the Tony Hawk series, SSX, and recently Skate 3. Despite not being a particularly big zombie fan, he got me to get Resident Evil: Outbreak and L4D/L4D2. To clarify, the last game I went out of my way to get without any input from Joe was probably SimCity 4. Yeah.
So, Joe was keeping track of CoH from before it launched. Not long after it did, he started playing, and started talking about how awesome it was. It was really only a matter of time before I caved, and I got it.
What kept me here? Exploration (even now, I still randomly wander around the cityscapes and find places I've never really paid any attention to), and the endless combinations of costumes, backstories, and powers that you can make. Almost six years and over 100 characters later, I'm still here.

I asked friends online for a rec for an MMO with easy-to-handle controls and a friendly playerbase.

I had never been much of a gamer; I had played only a couple, but tended to stick with a game for a very long time when I found one I enjoyed. I saw an ad for CoH in a magazine or comic book, I believe, and as a lifelong superhero fan, the idea of being able to create my own superhero appealed to me immediately. I purchased the game shortly after launch, but then discovered that my PC wasn't really able to handle it. I suspended my account for a few months while I saved for a new computer, but I've been playing (off and on) ever since.
