What drew you to CoX?
My brother started at go live. He told me it was like the RPG Champions in video game form. I told him he was full of it for a month or two. Then he came over one day, loaded it up, had me run around as his stone/axe tank. BZB was created about 24 hours later.
Be well, people of CoH.
My husband got me into it - HE got into it because several of his friends played, but he said he wouldn't start until he could play a villain. After CoV went live, he tested it, approved, and then they got him started.

It was a superhero PC game, and Freedom Force was getting old. I played Freedom Force a LOT. (Certainly not as much as I've played CoH, but Freedom Force was a very tiny game in comparison.)
I was very wary of MMOs, because I'm very introverted, but I liked the graphics and character models, so I decided to give the game a chance. The character creation and combat style sucked me right in. I wasn't wild about everything in the game, but I had more than enough fun to keep me going indefinitely.
I came for the superheroes.
I stayed for the bikini_1
I had very little MMO experience. Had passed over World of Borecraft, was mainly playing stratergy and FPS (when you can combine the 2 you get something special). Anyway, a lot of time chatting with 2 certain friends online id ask '
'what you doin?'
... 'Playin City of Heroes'
'any good?'
... 'Yeah. Here'
*sends me the updater downloader*
...'when you get setup, use this trial code'
'Cool, will do'
Been playing ever since. What kept me playing though is the simple fact that this game is casual and fun. You can explore almost unlimited ideas. One moment im on my tank, bringing in all the enemies around me and slogging it out as my team mates lay into em, or the next im in the back, buffing, or pulling people out of harms way.
I have tried other MMO's and despite never picking up a comic book in my life (though i did read all the CoH ones!), I have stayed with City of for about 5 years so far!

My very first MMO was Runescape, played that for a little while. I got bored after a short time, and a friend told me about some super-hero MMO that he had heard about. Eager to try a real MMO, I searched online, and lo and behold I found this game. I tried it out and have been happy since.
I've done trials for other games, but none of them had the appeal that this one had. World of snorecraft was just unbearable with it's little-to-no customization, Champions turned the silliness meter waaay too high, and Star Trek Online was exactly like Champions with a Star Trek skin on top. I'm not really sure why I have stuck with the City for so long, the gameplay is just addictive and fun.

Been playing on and off since release. What drew me to the game is it wasn't PvP, as I my first MMO was Shadowbane. The graphics looked crisp and clean, and I have been a comic fan since my Mom bought me my first comic way back when in 78. Thor it was, and that lead me to the Avengers, and then to others. To be able to play the Hero, hell yeah.
*I still want a Union Jack costume.
No one pays attention to me, cause I listen to the voices in my head.
I didn't even know about this game until i saw a review of it on TV. The name stuck with me so one day while in some electronics store I see a box for the Collectors Edition.
I said to myself: Self, why don't you try it? So I picked it up and took it home.
Then went back to the electronics to buy a DVD Drive (the reason I was originally there to begin with).
Installed the drive, then the game, started it up and promptly lost power for 3 days due to a nasty storm and the general ineptitude of the local power company.
Once I'd managed to actually PLAY the game for 5 minutes I knew I was hooked. been here ever since.
Sometimes you get the bear; sometimes he get you, rips your head off, sucks out your eyes, pulls out your spleen, humps your leg and pees in your boots
My brother gave it to me as a Christmas gift. I tried it out and here I am, years later. It helped that I've always been a superhero fan.
Arc #40529 : The Furies of the Earth
Well.. I remember when the game was first announced way way WAY back in october of 2001. Well might have been a bit earlier but I remember joining the original boards back in october of 2001. I was playing another MMO at the time and people posted on those boards that a superhero MMO was being worked on. I loved comic books as a kid and I loved the idea of a superhero MMO so following a superhero game was a no brainer.
I joined the City of Heroes boards, talked with people and waited with baited breath for the game to be released. The years passed on, where I once had gone to the boards everyday I started going every week, then every month and once every other month to see what was happening. Finally they had a contest for the oldest players that still kept up with the game. I got into the first wave beta testing and since my first use of Crush on a Hellion the only time I have not played or followed CoH is when life has prevented me from doing such. I truely enjoy this game and luckily I have matured more then in the old days of beta.. I remember one venomous post about Dimension Shift in particular towards the end of beta which I regret posting, Not my more bright and shiney moments.
Ever since the game was first announced and powers were discussed I wanted to play a gravity based hero. There was just something so wickedly awesome about the idea of teleporting around and using my powers to crush, lift or otherwise manipulate my foes. Though I did envision the character as more of a tanker then a controller but there was no gravity/gravity tanker option so I made a grav/kin. One of my first characters was Controller Grav. Its sort of funny I chose that name because I wanted to reinforce within my own mind that I was there to test not to play in the early days of the betas but became known for playing the character, created a background for the character and decided to remake her in release.
Anyways I'm rambling on like an old man so I'll end this trip down memory lane with these final thoughts.. I am really thankful that we have this game to play, all these wicked awesome devs that continue to work on it and that I have been here to see the game grow up to become in my opinion one of the best games that I have ever played.
i never even heard about it till i went to a friends house and he showed it to me, he let me make a toon and i played it for like 4 hours and got to lvl 11 and it was exciting so i got that for my 17th b-day (im 21 now lol)
Funny enough I stumbled into CoX because of the heroclix that came with the CoV collector's edition. I decided to try the game itself out and bam here I am today playing non-stop and loving every second!
Are you ready for this? Bet you would never have seen it coming...
PvP.
That is right, PvP. The scapegoat and red headed step child of this game is what brought me here.
My buddy told me about how fast paced and awsome the PvP was so I gave the game a try and as soon as I set foot in BB I was hooked.
What keeps me around? Eh, my wife plays...that is about it.
No relation to Arachnos!
Part Pack: Now the majority of players know how we, PvPers, have felt for years now. Don't want to be so "civil" now that you have been completly ignored, do you?
Got into the CoH beta fairly late (about a week before it went live) but that was more than enough to hook me.
CoH was my very first MMO & even though I've played about a dozen others over the years--including World of zzzzzz....*snort* huh? wha? Sorry, drifted off there for a sec--It's the only MMO I'm currently subbed to.
Why? Because no other MMO has made me feel as much of a badass as this one. Right from the get-go, you are "Level: Awesome" and you only get better. Plus you don't have to kill 500 boars to get them to drop 5 tusks to get to level awesome either.
Let's face it, Superheroes > midgets & fairies. Period.

I didn't have much MMO experience, but was fascinated with the idea of playing with so many people. I googled arpund for a long time, casually looking for some free to play MMOs. I then realized that every free to play MMO was terrible. But alas, I searched on, and decided to read up on some random game called City of Heroes. I was hooked from the concept. I did some more research, then rounded up some money and took the plunge. The computer I had was already about 4 years old and it was just stupid annoying to try and play; roughly 30 mins for the updater to start, couldn't zone into Atlas w/o mapservering (on Victory none the less). Yet I still loved my blaster, and this game. Stuck with the game ever since. And got a new comp to boot!
I can't completely recall how I got into City of Heroes. I think my friends and I just got bored of Star Wars Galaxies and City of Heroes was a new MMO on the horizon. This was when there wasn't an explosion of MMOs, both free to play and pay to play popping up every month. Anyways I gave it a go and here I am, 77 months or so later. My addiction didn't really kick in until I finally started playing Scrappers. That AT is still my favorite one to this day.

Hmm... Jack Kirby drew me into it!
Get it? Get it?
Really though... I was happily playing another game, a long time ago... in a galaxy far far away...
And I knew of CoH's existence. I thought it seemed kinda cool, but never checked it out, because I was more than happy with my one mmorpg and had no plans to leave nor play any other ones.
A friend played CoH from launch... I actually got to mess around in the character creator and see it in action. While I was impressed with the character creator, it didn't exactly impress me in game (But I didn't give it much of a shot, in all fairness... as I wasn't interested).
SOmE evil jerkos took away our beloved space fantasy game... And, after giving their new game a try for some time... a break... and one last go with it...
My wife and I left that behind and decided we'd go through every free trial for all the mmorpgs out there in early 2006.
CoH was on top of my list.
I was a bit familiar with the community, just because I had visited the forums a few times and grown to enjoy some of the running jokes, the camaraderie between the Devs and the players and the overall vibe I got from it.
We started the CoV 10 Day Trial...
And we didn't look back.
I think one of the biggest things (Among many) that thrilled me was the Physics system. Knocking people around, up, down, over ledges, seeing them hanging, dangling... having it done to you... It just made (And still makes) every single moment of every encounter potentially something unique. I love that.
During those 10 days, we ordered both CoH and CoV (I guess we got the GvE at that time).
We stuck around for 3 months... and never stopped loving it... But it was too soon after losing the previous game that we loved for over 3 years.
So, we took a break, both saying and knowing that we'd be back.
Sure enough... Less than a year later, we re-upped and we haven't stopped once since.
and round up everyone that knows more than they do"-Dylan
i saw alot of ads in my magazines when it was coming out.hell who didnt wanna be a superhero!!
.asked for it for xmas that year. started dec 26th 2004!
Superhero genre. I was tired of all the Fantasy stuff out there and wanted to play a MMO that involved one of my other favorite genres (horror, fantasy, sci-fi, steampunk and comics). I'm still waiting for a good horror, sci-fi and steampunk. So once I tried it, the costume editor was what kept me there. It wasn't the missions for the first 4 years. They finally started getting better and better. It was the altitis and the costume editor that allowed me to realize my disease and welcome it with open arms.

Ah, yes, May of 2004. For some odd reason I was playing Lineage II at the time. I still don't know why. Anywho, while I was killing bouncing mushrooms over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over, my brother was giving City of Heroes a go. He was all like "you don't start out fighting rats, you fight gang members and work your way up from there". I was intrigued: an MMO where you don't start out killing wildlife? He let me give it a shot and I created my first character: The Crimson Thunder, and Elec/Elec Blaster, and I was immediately hooked. I went to EB Games the next week, traded in some games and got CoH for about $20. My brother had started out on Champion, because he thought the name sounded cool, and I followed suit. I don't remember if it was that same day or a few days later, but sometime after May 27th I created Demobot, an Energy Blast/Energy Manipulation Blaster, who would become my first 50 and the toon I've played more than any other.
I've stuck with CoH because the community is far and away the best of any MMO I've played.

I was trying to pick my first MMO. It was a choice between SWG, WoW or CoH. I have never! regretted my pick. Came for the genre, stayed for the friends.

I'd seen it in the shops a lot after EU release in 2005, but was a little shaky on the whole "Pay a fee to play a game I've already bought?" thing for ages. I'd finally managed to drag myself out of a hellish financial situation (that had lasted for the previous 7 years), to the point where I actually had a few quid to play with.
So, one Saturday in September 05, I'm in town (I think I was getting my hair cut, but I could be wrong) and I decided drift on down to my local computer game shop, just to browse, as you do.
Perusing the offerings, I'm stuck. There's a copy of Star Wars Galaxies (and I am just a little bit of a Star Wars nerd), and a copy of CoH on the shelf.
Now, I've always liked the superhero genre - didn't really buy many comic books, because I was too busy buying D&D books, and besides, my friends buy them, so I can always borrow - and I'd heard... unpleasant things about SWG.
So, seeing that the Deluxe Edition of CoH came with a month of free game time, I figured "Meh, what the hey. I spend £20 now, and if I don't like it, I play a game for a month... which is about what I probably play most games for anyway. Haven't lost anything."
Bimble round town some more, grab a pad of paper for my D&D game notes, eventually drift back to the car and head home.
Important note time: This was all of three weeks after I got married.
At home, I show Mrs Shad my new purchase and explain my reasoning on the "play for a month, pay for more if I like it" thing, and point out that I can pay for it straight out of my bank account, so no need to borrow her credit card.
I can remember the look on her face. She really wasn't sure. Still, too late now - I've purchased, and I'm damned well going to give it a go.
About half an hour later...
"DUN, DER DUN-DUN, D-D-D-DUUUUN!" blasts out of my speakers as Shadowe makes his first fumbling steps in Paragon City.
5 Years later...
Mr Shad has 2 accounts, Mrs Shad has 1, we've purchased not less than 4 computers over that time, always making sure (from about 6 months after I first got the game) that we have at least 2 able to run it at any given time, so that we can play together.
Happy days.

I just happened to see it at Wal-Mart and thought it looked cool. (Did not even realize it was an MMO.) Asked for it for Christmas and I've been a Loyalist ever since.

What drew you to this game? For me, it was when in 2008 I was seeing the free trial advertisements just about everywhere I went online. I'd heard about City of Heroes long before that, but never cared about it. But when I saw they were giving out the free trial, I said to myself "Why not?". Needless to say, I was sold on the strength of the 45 minutes I spent in the trial and bought in. That was two years ago come Saturday.
