Fail. The only "redo" or "re-release" I want to see is the OT on DVD/Blu-ray in it's original form.

However, this quote from the article was funny:

They should actually redo the prequels with a good writer and director...

Is he fixing the Special Editions Episodes 4-6, when he puts them in 3D?

Like get rid of Jaba from Episode 4? Give back the original song at the end of Episode 6? Ect...ect...

Oh come on... He said they were trying to figure out the technology to pull this off back when Revenge Of The Sith was being released.

It's just another excuse for fans to go and celebrate some Star Wars on the big screen.

And yes... They can make some money from it!

Win/win.

And yeah... it'd be great if a few of those special edition tweaks can be re-tweaked... but... we'll see (I doubt it).

Back when they first mentioned this... We started wondering what scene you'd most like to see in 3D.

A New Hope's trench run could be fun.
Of course, the opening space scene in Revenge Of The Sith was already dizzying... that could be fun.
And, while it isn't that long, the space battles in Return Of The Jedi should be a lot of fun.

It's just a goof.
Not sacrilege

To quote Stripes... "Lighten up, Frances"

(A true remake or redo... yeah, no... this is just applying modern 3D tech to the movies for a bit of fun, fan frenzy, money and whatnot)

They don't make money every time you watch the DVD!!

And yeah... a DVD of the THX remastered Laser Disc prints would be fabulous...

EDIT:
Oh, also... We'll see the end result, but... theoretically, this is Lucas... pioneering new technology to take old movies and apply a very high quality 3D aspect to existing film (Well, not really film, I'm sure, hehe... HD video... Motion bleedin' Pictures, mate).
Lucas is a pioneer in the industry. Without his lead, the standards, the tech and the thrills would not be the same. I tip my hat and have a bit of trust in the artist.

i could care less about the 3-D thing. But this is an opportunity to eventually see 4 - 6 on the big screen again. It's something i dont mind shelling out the cash for. the prequels OTOH, meh, skippable.

My apologies for interrupting the thread.

On topic: I'll see 'em again in theaters. Getting to see the Special Editions in theaters was pure magic.

Already out on DVD.

The original theatrical releases are on the bonus discs, exactly as they were shown in theaters. Not even "A New Hope" added to the opening shot in the first film. They aren't anamorphic transfers, just straight letterbox (almost want to believe GL did it that way on purpose, just to irritate the fans who hated his changes), but they're the real thing.

Hmm...didn't know about that. I had the original on VHS, and recall the "ONE....LAST....TIME" spoken and written just before the Lucas interview, and then the movie itself. I guess it should have said "ONE....LAST....TIME.....until we want more money."

again, why were you guys not expecting this? I mean he only gave away half his fortune to charity. Of course, he is going to want to make it up fast and putting out multiple gimmick Star wars things successively will do it. It's like you guys thought he stopped liking money all of a sudden...

Posted

i understand wanting to make more money off of gimmicks but really? the 3-D never took off to well in the 70's, 80's, or 90's because it sucked now they are trying it again and just like before it will suck the only enjoyment i could possibly get from 3-D is listening to stories about people suffering head trauma from hitting their heads on the desk while trying to dodge the "money shot" in 3-D porn.

That fiend! How much longer must we wait for the Star Wars Holiday Special to get some special ed/3D love!

I'm sure Lucas has all sorts of wills and plans set up to try to have his "vision" carry on as long after his passing as possible. But as we see by Star Trek's example there are already people like J.J. Abrams who are steering a course for that franchise ever farther beyond the limits of what Gene Roddenberry was able to accomplish.

You have to wonder what the fate of Star Wars will be post Lucas. Will they constantly try to rehash and retrofit the same material every 10 years with the latest silly fad film technology or will someone finally have a bold idea and actually try to create something NEW and DIFFERENT with the foundation they have to work with.

As with everything I guess time will tell.

Me thinks I will only see this if they let Darth Maul go one on one with Jar Jar...watching Jar Jar's head fly into my lap via 3D would be worth the price!

That's such an interesting idea. I'd love to see Star Wars - The Next Generation.

Well Star Wars is such a huge franchise (both culturally and financially) that eventually, with either George's blessing or not, someone somewhere will make something like a SW:TNG that will go far beyond anything George originally envisioned. It's going to be fun to see how it turns out.

Eh.

Won't be going to see this. I'm pretty much at the "Enough's enough" phase. Sure, the trench run in 3d would be great (so would the opening to RotS) but... meh.

Ok now the Star Wars fans must demand an intervention to save George from himself. George your not Disney where you bring out your classic stuff every 7 yrs cause there's a new audience. Leave well enough alone. George it was bad enough when you changed the Special Edition version in 2004, now you want to 3D them. George you do realize the fight scene between Luke and Vader in Jedi will become even darker to the point it will look like you are watching it through mud?

Ok I'll get off my soap box now....this is one of my pet peeves, Lucas changing these classic movies again. I saw them in the theater when they originally were shown and when the Special Editions came out. I loved them then and still do. But when Lucas changed them in 2004, I got pissed. I still have the VHS tapes of the original and Special Editions and plan on putting them to DVD (if possible, not sure if there is a copy right guard on them), since you can't find a copy of the 1997 version of the Special Edition. I was such a geek at the time I even have a copy of the Holiday Special.

just my two cents....

You know me, I'm the guy who will say that The Phantom Menace was a misunderstood masterpiece and that people have unjustly made George Lucas into a figure whose infamy has eclipsed Stalin's.

...and yet I found myself getting somewhat annoyed at this news...

I'm not sure why. I mean nobody is making me go see the re releases, and if I prefer the original version I can always go watch it again.

Hrm.

Well either way, I've always wanted to see Star Wars in theaters again so I guess I should be happy.
