To be fair, Lucas said he would never release the original theatrical versions on DVD because they weren't the movies he wanted to make. There was severe fan-backlash, like there is just about every time George announces something, but this time he seemed to take the fans' pleas into consideration.

The problem I have with artists like Lucas who say stuff like "I don't like this version of my artwork because I didn't have the technology back then to make it like I wanted" is that technology is pretty much ALWAYS going to improve. When does enough finally become enough? You never saw da Vinci keep going back to the Mona Lisa to "tinker" with it every couple of years. You never saw Beethoven go back to rework his symphonies on a regular basis. Just because Lucas has the ability to go back and monkey with his own work doesn't mean he OUGHT to.

I realize much of the reason he does it is that there's huge amounts of money to be made every few years. It's only when he tries to pawn off sad excuses for it as being "artistically reasonable" is when most people get upset with him.

George here's a bit of advice. By now between the millions made when the movies came out originally and through first VCR and then DVD and Blueray sales and adding in all the tons of cash from all the merchandizing.. If you don't have any new idea in your head then just retire. I'm sure the BILLIONS you have will keep you comfy until the end of your days on this planet. LOL

I'll probably go watch them again, sounds like fun to me.

Episode I will have the lowest sales for sure but after that the series just gets better and better. So I expect Episode I to basically be the movie they experiment with on 3D techniques so they can use the refined techniques on the other better movies.

I for one am glad that Lucas did 1 - 3 and has shown no interest in doing 7 - 9. Mostly cause I like the Star Wars EU as it is in the post-Episode 6 novels & Legacy comics books and if Lucas did make movies there is a 99% chance that he would ignore everything that has been established in those books and do his own thing.

First off this isnt as terrible as many people thnk it might be. First off the movies are already made, so there is pretty much no likelihood of getting all those BS shots of things coming out of the screen that plague current 3D movies as just a way to prove they are in 3D. I would expect the conversions to be much more like Avatar in such that it provides a depth to the experience and film. However its also a nice chance to see ALL the movies again on the big screen. I know this isnt as big of a deal for some with 5 and 6 foot televisions in their homes, but i dont have that. And my 10 yearold has never seen any of them in theaters so the way i look at it, right about the time he is going to stop wanting to spend time with his old foogy dad, well have these to enjoy going to together.

Now on the optomistic front, lucas has often used star wars to finance other and new projects. Not only were the special editions needed to preserve the original films, but he used the money from the theatrical releases to finance the phantom menace. which was used to finance attack of the clones etc. So this could be a project intended to start a cash flow to finance something else new and intresting in the star wars universe.

I know everyone loves to blame lucas for ****** their childhood and kicking their puppy, but they are his films, he worked hard and took alot of chances making them and getting the rights to control them as he wished. Something that often doesnt happen for filmmakers. He took that money and founded many things like ILM, skywalker sound, THX, Lucas Arts etc that have all gone on to enhance the enjoyment we can get from many of our favorite past times like movies, TV, and games. Ill give lucas the benefit of the doubt this is a good thing. (And yes i think the prequels were ok also)

Part of the problem is nothing makes everyone happy. It originally was a problem of "Oh another VHS set where are my DVDs" and moved on to "FInally DvDs, OMG no original versions" Then "Finally original theater versions, wait no Bluray? OMG Lucas is just milking us." Well perhaps maybe he should have invested his money in fortune telling so he could make one ultimate version that will take into account every technology that will be used in home theaters for the next 30 years.

All i can say at this point i have said, as my son is starting to enter his teenage years and dad is far less cool then his appears to be right now, i have atleast 6 outtings now that I know were going to be able to share and enjoy together like we did when he was 6 and starting to see the movies for the first time. So no im not that upset by this in any way. I get to see them in theaters, again, and he will for the first time, and we can do it together.

Until you have a few million dollars and learn how to direct films properly, STFU. It's George's baby. HIS universe HIS vision. You don't have to pay up if you don't like it. There are obviously people who DO like it.

That's also my little schpeil to those who hate on Micheal Bay's Transformers. HIS vision, HIS movies, not yours. Want to make your own movie, go to town, that's why we have youtube.

Till then, just shut up with the nerdrage already.

That would be the Grand Admiral Thrawn trilogy written by Timothy Zahn. But seeing as how GL has no respect at all for the books, I doubt we will ever see it.

What would be cool is if they made a movie based on The Force Unleashed. Lucas says it's cannon so why the hell not?

Yeah but with all the add ons it they done to it and now it's going be in 3d with means they might rip apart all the Action Screen, Battles and Space Craft battle. Meaning by the time the movie comes out it won't even be The Original Trilogy.

Sure Star Wars is Lucas' baby.
I'm just saying most serious artists have the good enough sense to know when their "babies" are done and stop tinkering with them. *shrugs*

At least while GL is alive at any rate.
That was the point I was making with my earlier posts in this thread.

The problem is that there is one gigantic difference between Avatar and the Star Wars movies. Avatar was filmed in 3D. Star Wars wasn't. Turning Star Wars into a 3D movie will have to be done through post-production processing. It may not have Jar-Jar's tongue shooting out of the screen to lick your face but it also isn't going to look anywhere near as nice as Avatar.

Win/win.

And yeah... it'd be great if a few of those special edition tweaks can be re-tweaked... but... we'll see (I doubt it).

Back when they first mentioned this... We started wondering what scene you'd most like to see in 3D.

A New Hope's trench run could be fun.
Of course, the opening space scene in Revenge Of The Sith was already dizzying... that could be fun.
And, while it isn't that long, the space battles in Return Of The Jedi should be a lot of fun.

It's just a goof.
Not sacrilege

Yeah, really. I hate 3D, so I won't go see this, but if people want to pay to go see the movies again in 3D, more power to them. It doesn't hurt me in any way.

I used to agree with this. Then I re-read them a few years ago. Time has done that story no favors.

Saying that Avatar was "filmed" in 3D is a bit misleading considering that an overwhelming percentage of it was CGI.

I'll agree that Avatar was conceived from Day One with 3D in mind so it did have that over Star Wars. But all of the footage of Star Wars either has been or will be digitized for this 3D conversion and they'll process it to take advantage of the current technology as much as possible.

Thankfully there will be no scenes of Darth Vader "purposefully" lunging his light saber towards the audience or anything else which typically makes the use of 3D stupid and annoying. From that point of view revamping Star Wars for 3D might actually turn out to be relatively acceptable because the only 3D effects we'll notice should be mostly subtle and non-cheesy.

Clearly 3D Star Wars is going to happen whether we wanted it or not.
It's just ironic to realize it could work well precisely because it was NOT originally filmed for it.

Yes, a lot of Avatar is CGI but the great thing about CGI is that you can render stereoscopic frames. Because everything in the computer is defined in three dimensions you can render separate left and right eye frames. You can't do that with Star Wars. The best you'll get is an approximation and so you wind up with something that looks more like Clash of the Titans than Avatar.

And once Star Wars has been digitized (if it hasn't been already) they'll be able to reverse engineer stereoscopic frames for it as well. Remember when the "artwork" for Avatar was first created it only existed as single images much like the original frame footage of the Star Wars masters. Those art images were processed to create the stereoscopic effect in Avatar much like the frame stills will be used for Star Wars.

I agree that the step-by-step process it took to make Avatar a finished 3D product was different than what it'll take for Star Wars because the "initial" source comes from different media. But once you get these things to the "digital" media form they can be processed in basically the same way to generate the final product.

Admittedly I don't expect Star Wars to look exactly like Avatar.
But I highly doubt it's going to look "bad" no matter how it turns out.

He might even re-edit it to add more Jar Jar slapstick.
