It's okay, just know that once you admit there's a problem, then the healing can begin.

As an art director, there's nothing that convinces me of the world's impending doom more so than when client wants to see comic sans used on a project.

Google "plainfacedog" and it should come up.

We had a discussion regarding Comic Sans in another forum I frequent that has a bunch of graphic design students in it. One of them found this. I shall let the forum do the censoring.

I'M COMIC SANS, *******.

BY MIKE LACHER

- - - -

Listen up. I know the **** you've been saying behind my back. You think I'm stupid. You think I'm immature. You think I'm a malformed, pathetic excuse for a font. Well think again, nerdhole, because I'm Comic Sans, and I'm the best thing to happen to typography since Johannes ******* Gutenberg.

You don't like that your coworker used me on that note about stealing her yogurt from the break room fridge? You don't like that I'm all over your sister-in-law's blog? You don't like that I'm on the sign for that new Thai place? You think I'm pedestrian and tacky? Guess the **** what, Picasso. We don't all have seventy-three weights of stick-up-my-*** Helvetica sitting on our seventeen-inch MacBook Pros. Sorry the entire world can't all be done in stark Eurotrash Swiss type. Sorry some people like to have fun. Sorry I'm standing in the way of your minimalist Bauhaus-esque fascist snoozefest. Maybe sometime you should take off your black turtleneck, stop compulsively adjusting your Tumblr theme, and lighten the **** up for once.

People love me. Why? Because I'm fun. I'm the life of the party. I bring levity to any situation. Need to soften the blow of a harsh message about restroom etiquette? SLAM. There I am. Need to spice up the directions to your graduation party? WHAM. There again. Need to convey your fun-loving, approachable nature on your business' website? SMACK. Like daffodils in ************* spring.

When people need to kick back, have fun, and party, I will be there, unlike your pathetic fonts. While Gotham is at the science fair, I'm banging the prom queen behind the woodshop. While Avenir is practicing the clarinet, I'm shredding "Reign In Blood" on my double-necked Stratocaster. While Univers is refilling his allergy prescriptions, I'm racing my tricked-out, nitrous-laden Honda Civic against Tokyo gangsters who'll kill me if I don't cross the finish line first. I am a sans serif Superman and my only kryptonite is pretentious buzzkills like you.

It doesn't even matter what you think. You know why, jagoff? Cause I'm famous. I am on every major operating system since Microsoft ******* Bob. I'm in your signs. I'm in your browsers. I'm in your instant messengers. I'm not just a font. I am a force of ************* nature and I will not rest until every uptight armchair typographer ****-hat like you is surrounded by my lovable, comic-book inspired, sans-serif badassery.

Enough of this ********. I'm gonna go get hammered with Papyrus.

I don't understand. LaserJesus's post seemed to be somewhat jovial to me, while also pointing out the overuse of a badly designed font when so many better options are available. Yet you seem to get in a twist over perceiving him to be in a twist. So much so that you want to post in Comic Sans now just to spite someone. Who's taking things too seriously now?

Taking the time to ridicule others on a forum board in defense of a TYPEFACE doesn't make you look like you get out much either.

It is because you are only seeing a part of the story. This is a continuation of a discussion, not the start of one. He really is in a twist. On the other hand I'm not spiting him specifically, I'm spiting the typographists the world over. I do so by making a statement that I, as a graphic/web designer, can choose to use this typeface if I feel it is appropriate to the situation. In this case, there isn't (that I've found) a better solution. All the comic-type suggestions, like I've said above, fail to meet all the criteria of a typeface that I'm looking to replace the in-game type (Montreal DemiBold, whoever chose that typeface should be lectured to about readability) with.

Those criteria are:
  • Is full-featured (entire character set).
  • Has distinct 1, i, I, l, and L (btw comic sans: 1, i, I, l, and L).
  • Scales well.
  • Is free.
  • Theme appropriate.
Comic Sans fills all those criteria. Most amateur typefaces are not a full character set while most professional full sets are not free. A lot of the other suggested typefaces (both amateur and professional) don't scale well, tend to be all caps (meaning that my first and second criteria fails), or are not really thematically appropriate. Just like I wouldn't use Bodoni, Garamond, Goudy, or Times to make a old western themed poster, I do not see that the same typefaces fit with a comic book style game.

The fact that he (and apparently others) is so upset over what I and other have used as an in-game typeface smacks of him (and others) dictating how I (and others) play the game. Can you see what typeface I use? No? Then why should it matter? If anyone posts pictures of their game and you see comic sans, take a deep breath and relax, you are not seeing it on your game screen. If you take umbrage that someone is posting a picture with comic sans in it, then you are taking things far too seriously and you should step back.

I should hope I'd not be out at 10:50pm, as I tend to need my sleep. I look at the forums (and a few other things) before I go to bed.

Well, Papyrus certainly made someone a lot of money due to Cameron's Avatar... Which goes to show that you can please the artists or please the masses. Which would you prefer to be a poor artist or wealthy designer?

*looks at Snow Globe's post count*

Yeah, gonna stand by my pot-calling-kettle-black insinuation.

As for being a poor artist or a rich designer, I'd rather just be good. Comic Sans in the design world, wouldn't be the way to be that.

I hate to break it to you, but over the span of 3 years I was with the City Scoop, my post count skyrocketed. Why? Because I was posting (and reposting) articles, puzzles, and layout for the Scoop before the Admins posted them for everyone to see. While I was Editor in Chief I often had to respond to other user's questions about the Scoop. I was not the only one involved with the Scoop who watched their post-count rise quickly. The other reason my post count is high is that I've been posting for the last 5 years. I've been an active member of the community. I make an average of 8.29 posts per day (sometimes more, sometimes less). You make an average of 1.2 posts per day. So what?

Sew buttons. Red buttons.

Also, i wish the Scoop would return, but not enough to undertake the project myself. The Scoop had some great material.

(i continue to approach this thread with all the thought and gravitas it deserves.)

It's from McSweeney's. Just Google "mcsweeney's comic sans" for the link (so I won't get 8-modded).

I'd argue that it doesn't fit the last criteria at all. Sure, comic sans was inspired by comic book lettering, but it really doesn't look much like comic book lettering at all.

Besides, I can have a heart attack all I want. Go ahead and continue to use your terrible font, all I've really done with this thread is entertain myself and others. If you take offense to my taking an offense, well, then I guess we're just a couple of people who take the internet far too seriously.

(P.S.: I admitted freely to having taken literally seconds to find that font. If I had to do actual research, I wouldn't have started this silly thread.)
