Super Booster V - Mutant Theme Costume Sets: Feedback
In the future booster pack ideas thread in general discussion, I did suggest a Kawaii themed Booster, complete with floating heart auras. Butterflies would work too. Because it's cute, sadly the devs might dismiss it as a joke. As a challenge, though, I dare the devs to think about serious characters with cute or beautiful aesthetics rather than just the sinister and edgy. Goddesses. Fountains of life. Animist spirits of the cosmos. Or of the planet. Children with unlimited powers (think Lama++).
I totally agree with Sam as he points out a page or so up, there has been a real hard edge to a majority of the costume releases over the past 3 years. When this first began, it was refreshing, welcome and quite arguably needed. But this hard edge does contribute to that sense of sameness I was speaking of. Several ways to break this, none of these strategies are mutually exclusive: - asymmetric models - rounder more organic shapes - convincing modeling and texturing of soft, organic materials - more lighthearted themes In addition to the often requested better furry bodies, shoulder fur, animal bits and bushy tails other possible options in no particular order: - feather and fur boas that use cape physics, but are 3d capes essentially - convincing feather and fur trim for tights, catsuits and existing clothing options - shoulder pieces as asymmetric as the gladiator shoulder, but portraying large bushy branches, allowing players to make sentient trees. asymmetric boots and belts in this direction that are also ridiculously bushy with vegetation could work as well - simple spherical, reflective heads, shoulders, elbows and knees - GG and others (mostly female players IRL from what I could tell) went a bit gaga over Mother Mayhem's bosom. The only gathered and lifted bosoms we have are sharply framed by either the witch leathers or this new organic armor set. create some more generic gathered and lifted tights options, with and without keyhole cleavage reveals - an "antoinette set" with powdered wigs for his and hers, tricorner caps, and a close approximation of a hoop gown slightly lifted and tilted forward, ala how the Warrior belt geometry from the martial arts booster currently works - jewelry details of pendants, medallions and head details for earrings, including feathers and dream catchers on the more sinister side--it doesn't all need to be cute or cuddly: - a set that looks less like fractured hard materials and more like melted wax, with large gobs of ones body gathered up in big heavy drips that have hardened in place - big bulbous boils or mud bubbles on the skin--not just as a texture, but a few large spheres the size of a fist, like on the back or chest or shoulders - others already mentioned taking advantage of the robotic arm divisions to have mutated arms. what about just one big honking mega muscular arm? ditto in monstrous legs Anyways, I'll still be getting this pack to support Paragon Studios. I definitely can use all three CC emotes and will use the growl as a bound stance emote for a few of my rooftop avengers. I also have perhaps one use for the bio-lum set. Still don't see how "hell-spawn" as David calls it constitutes a mutant. And though it is a very well done set, going to be stubborn on my opinion that it is very redundant with already existing demonic costume options and feels. And I'll begin the wait yet again and hope that booster pack IV or i19 has something that some of the standing gaps in basic comic genre themes and aesthetics currently in the CC. |
All of the above.

Is ultra mode absolutely required for glowage? Not everybody can run ultra mode.
Buying a new PC is not an option.
ATs to 50 - TA/A Def, Nrg/Nrg Blaster, EM/EA Brute, WS,ELM/ELA Stalker
If it were technically possible, I'd really like to have the Bioluminescent stripes as a Tights option; having just the glowing pattern and not the scabby-skin texture.
I agree with Human being on the tights option glow.
Can that be done?

the costume parts are absolutely incredible, but whilst i'm sure there will be lots of costumes made that utilize one or two of the new pieces well, on the whole the new sets feel far too few and specific.
i'm not really sure what i was expecting from this pack -- and as most of my characters are just vanilla people, I wasn't banking on anything in particular -- but like many others have said it really doesn't seem worth the premium.

In the lead-up to live, we'll definitely be talking more about the creation of the Mutant Pack. But basically, mutation's all about biological change, and we wanted to give players two distinct flavors of that and to make the parts as broadly usable as possible.
Bioluminescent represents the change-from-within concept of posthumanity: with these parts, your hero or villain is clearly changing at a genetic level and doing so in style--with tintable glows that really pop in dark environments. Organic Armor represents change-from-without. With these parts, you can acheive a carapace/exoskeleton look, as if your character is growing a new skin or shell or perhaps being taken over by a symbiotic entity. And for added visual punch, you get the tintable glows here too. As a set, the Mutant pack gives you the abilty to make new heroes or villains to fit a fairly wide range of aestheic types: alien-corrupted, hell-spawn, genetic freak--all of that's doable with this set. And with 2 tails, wings, and sword, there's a cherry on top. Here're some shots of the tails that you'll be getting in the next build, by the way: A monster-themed pack is something we can look into after Going Rogue, but that's a different set. Until then, enjoy all the new toys! |
I have to say that I'm disappointed. Mostly because what we got was not what we expected. When I was at Comic-Con last year, I specifically asked Positron about more animal themed costumes. His reply was that it made a lot of sense for them to be in the mutant pack. I think he later said something similar on the boards. So that was what I, and I think many others were expecting. Since it has taken significantly longer for the mutant pack then for any of the other origin themed packs, I expected something really impressive.
What we're getting looks nice, but just doesn't seem that impressive considering the time it took. Also, I don't really see myself using either of the new costumes, since they don't fit any of my existing characters. I'll probably pass on this one, at least for now.
Great work David! Also Bass, seriously it took me 15 seconds to even find his face and to even see how he was positioned I had to move close to the screen lol.
I admit I wanted more heads and tails but this will do! I can make some nice Plant, Deer, Reptile toons with this pack.
Also Thanks to you guys for considering making a Monster pack. To be honest I think it would be up there with the most requested pack ever.
I am not Furrie but I admit I always wanted to make a proper shark dude or werewolf!
ok david, thats the stuff, the armor tail will be appreciated by my dragon.
I think a "subdued" version of each set (like how you can get Witch parts with or without all the wings tacked on) might help with some of the blending issues. That way you could do the subdued version (aka "with skin" I guess) for costume 0, and then mutate further with the full version when you get cc 1.
For instance, my kaiju anthro would look good with the organic armor tail and a toned down version of the chest piece (mainly to get back spines) in her at-rest mode, but I wouldn't want the full-on armor for that. She could hyper up to a full armor later, though.

At this point, my biggest problems with the set: the seaming & the way the armors don't match skin colors.
- The seaming is a tad too obvious, especially around the neck and boots (hate the way that armor just stops at the neck). If those looked more seemless, they'd work better with other sets.
- Given the discrepencies between the skin color palette and costume color palette, the armors don't look like they are a part of you so much as something you are wearing.

I agree there needs to be a 'wish skin' option for the organic armor. I like the bioluminate as is, but if people want the more 'normal' skin and face, I say try to get it to them... As long as you keep the peices like they are now, as well. I really like the creepy face of it, and would be sad if it goes away.
Also, I'm echoing my saying of you all REALLY need to put in some new tech to allow things like the Bioluminate, Reptile, Monsterous Fur, Insectoid, etc to be able to have the 'tights' option over it. I mean. i know I will use the bioluminate as the 'skin' of ne of my characters, but am sad she won't be able to get a tank top, or bikini or anything, knowing I'll need to settle with the 'shirts' option.

David, would you consider adding (now or later, tied to the Mutant Pack or not, whichever) an alternate version of the Bioluminescent face with the big glowing eyes but an otherwise mostly-normal-human face? My wife and I have a couple of characters that could really benefit from those eyes... but the rest of the head, especially the mouth, doesn't work for them at all. Such a piece would, I think, notably increase the "mix and match" potential of the set.

Don't get me wrong, the quality is there but I am still disappointed by the demonic, hell-spawn as you yourself said, feeling of this pack...
