Discussion: New Gamestop/Razer Going Rogue Promotion
Slapped and kicked? I guess that means marketing are using ninjas and their elite hate-fu - which would explain why they're invivible, I guess

They're PROCs with DO levels which stop working at 20?
Meh, that's alright so. Thought you were going the Dragon Age route where you got as-good / better items from spending cash / pre-ordering than you get live.
Standard practice nowadays but I'll order when it goes live thanks.

I particularly love the way the EU money they get is being used to develop something that we in the EU will never get access to.....
We built this city on Rock and Roll!
- All 5 Enhancements are each a Doubled DO (DAM & Rech) with a Proc Bonus.
- The DAM and Rech is 16.7% each for levels 1-50.
- The Proc Bonus only works levels 1-20 and stops working at level 21.
- The only differences between the 5 enhancements is the type of Proc Bonus which are:
- Chance for minor Psionic Damage
- Chance for minor Energy Damage
- Chance for minor Lethal Damage
- Chance for minor Smashing Damage
- Chance for KnockDOWN

To the EU people dont be too upset. I know for alot of promotions they simply cant be done outside of the USA due to crazy laws and such in other countries. I am not saying this is one of them but if it was you really couldnt blame the devs on that. You still blame marketing for not thinking of something that could work for most if not all the countries.

It's not often that I'm negative on these forums, but considering that a signifigant percentage of the playerbase prepurchased Going Rogue, I think this is a terrible idea. It wouldn't be as bad an idea if it was advertised as one of the purchasing methods way back when, but letting us know at this point leaves me with a bitter taste in my mouth.
Admittedly, I've never liked in-game bonuses exclusive to people who use a particular retailer. I didn't like it with the CoV helmets, and I don't like it now. I've normally nothing but good things to say about this game, but this has left me a tad disappointed.
Seriously, I wrote a massive long post about how annoying this stuff is and how the EU gets kicked in the teeth again, but as always, we get ignored. Just like any comments about this will

But the same benefit can be gained by simply making you only able to equip one at a time (as was doen with the stealth enhancements). Now more powerful inspirations would (possibly) need to be made pind on pickup but those are consumables so different rules do apply.
|
You can also grant rewards based on the earner: I could give a special bonus Res/Def/Heal enhancement to a tanker or scrapper that completed Positron Part One and a Dmg/Rech/End enhancement to a blaster that completed the same task, knowing those cannot be traded around.

So far I have yet to see an answer from any redname(Pebble or Community thingy) to clarify that yes, the EU got screwed over again.

Forgot to mention: personally I think this is a good idea. I know some people don't like the concept, but for me it allows for much more freedom in the kinds of benefits the devs can give out when they know they cannot be shuffled around, stacked beyond what a single player can acquire, or exploited in other ways.
If the choice is between bind on equip and not bind on equip, the choice seems obvious. But if the choice is between bind on equip and all of these bind of equip goodies we can make, or we just don't ever get them at all, that choice is a different one, and one I come down on the side of diversity of power options. Same with ED. ED or no ED seems obvious. But that's not the choice, the choice is ED with inventions, or no ED with no inventions. That's a different choice (some would still pick no ED with no inventions, but at least they are making an honest choice). The one thing I will say is that I think if bind on equip is *only* used for the highest possible strength gear, then I think its a partially wasted effect. If it is also used to make low and intermediate stuff that players can work towards that don't involve the absolute highest levels of end game, then I think its an effect that can be well worth it for the entire playerbase and not just a small segment of it. For example, if Positron's task force(s) granted the player a significant powerful enhancement that you could only earn once per character, as a bind on equip it can be more powerful and interesting than if its can be farmed, traded, and gifted. It can be a reward balanced around the average effort of acquiring it, rather than balanced around the best case farming scenario. The bind technology behind these perk enhancements can be used for good or evil: the technology is neutral itself. I hope they are mainly used for good. |
There is one other concern as well - are these enhancements given out immediately, or claimed like vet rewards? If they're given out immediately, they're going to be taking up space we're already limited on (the 10 enhancements) during a time we really don't have places to put them - and since they're given out *once,* well, deleting won't help, and we can't store them.

And although I don't necessarily blame the devs, it has taken there time to actually create the ingame bonuses for something that the EU player base won't have access to.

Suggestion: make it the 75 or 78 month vet reward to get these enhancements. So we can eventually get them on our characters made long, long before GR or this promotion were ever thought of.

I'm somewhat confused by the level of response to this.
(disclaimer, I'm in the EU and so don't even get the option of these shinies, so I may not be running at a full rage/bile quotient) People on these board have been screaming for marketing to do something, anything to promote the game. So Marketing are now doing something to promote the game. Cue board rage. Whuh? |
It's not the Enhancements themselves...frankly, I'm not really expecting them to be all that valuable, even to my new characters. The principle bothers me, though. Whether it was "deliberate deceit" or not, it does still affect my ability to trust in what I hear first and makes me much much less likely to want to pre-purchase any products like this in the future. I've already paid extra at this point, and to find that that purchase is going to be of even less relative value than expected is more than a little disappointing.
|
I didn't pre-purchase anything because I assumed something like this would happen, since the company has done it before, just as I've not bought any more Booster Packs as I assume there will be a bargain-priced "get them all" promotion sooner or later.

Today, we announced a new promotion with GameStop and Razer. For those of you who may not have seen this information, customers who place an early reserve for the City of Heroes Going Rogue: Complete Collection at GameStop will receive a Razer Sphex gaming desktop skin with a Going Rogue design, five unique enhancements and a $5 off coupon for use at the Razer store. These benefits are in limited quantities.
I would like to take this time to provide some insight as to how this initiative came about.
What is the Goal of this Promotion?
As many of you have picked up on, City of Heroes Going Rogue: Complete Collection is really designed to attract new players to the game. One of the greatest challenges new MMO players face is learning how the game works. The enhancements are designed to make the starting experience even more convenient for these new players, but we didnt want them to be game-breaking, or make our veteran players feel like they had to have them as well.
This is why these are only provided to new characters and cannot be sold/traded/stacked. First, you cant have enough of them to 6-slot out any power. Secondly, for a L1 character, that 16% damage/recharge boost is nice, but once you hit L20+, IOs start getting a lot more competitive. The proc rate is low to begin with, and at L21 they wont even kick in anymore. A L50 character could use these enhancements if they chose to, of course.
We believe this would benefit the new players much more, as our veteran players have a better understanding of the options available to them.
Why Now?
When we launched the prepurchase program, we did not plan on offering incentives for preordering the Complete Collection. A preorder program is different from a prepurchase, and we did not see a value in offering competing programs.
Since we launched our prepurchase program, we have been having discussions with GameStop, Razer and some of our other partners about new ways to promote the launch of Going Rogue. As some of you have mentioned, as a new expansion for a major MMO, Going Rogue deserves a lot of attention. We agree with you, and so did our partners. But evaluating ideas and nailing down the details took a good amount of time, which is why you havent heard about it until now.
Why Are We Doing This?
As you probably know, GameStop is the top gaming-focused retailer in the US. When they expressed interest in putting together this new program, it felt like a great way to get the word out on Going Rogue and to make sure every GameStop store in the country was promoting our launch.
Fine, but what about people who dont have a GameStop nearby, or dont shop there? Thats where Razer comes in. As part of the GR launch, Razer will be launching their own GR site, promoting CoH in all of their forums, newsletters, providing a coupon for GR customers and even designing a brand new mouse pad with our help.
So we decided to pool our resources to create one powerful marketing campaign, designed to create an opportunity that seemed so interesting that someone who doesnt yet play CoH would be interested enough to try this game.
Our goal is not to force anyones hand, or cause you to feel regrets. This was an amazing opportunity to have two of the strongest names in the gaming industry support the launch of Going Rogue, and we feel confident that it will provide some of the visibility and buzz you have been asking for. One of the biggest features in Going Rogue is that we are redefining the new player experience. Our partners are helping us make that experience even more attractive.
Will There be Any Other Preorder Programs?
We have no plans at this time to have any other preorder program.
What About Prepurchasers?
We do understand that some of our prepurchase customers may have decided differently had they known upfront that this preorder program was coming. This is why we tried to make the in-game goodies something that would have a stronger value for new players than for existing veterans. We do hope youve enjoyed these past few months with early access to Dual Pistols and Demon Summoning. Prepurchasing Going Rogue is still the only way to get early access to these two awesome new power sets.
If you have any other questions or concerns that were not addressed by me, or in the information released by GameStop or Razer, please let me know in this thread. I want to make sure that you have all of the information available to you, and that details of this promotion are as transparent as possible.

I don't really see this as a big deal and the whole "slap in the face" thing is just silly.
Speaking of silly slaps...
But they told us ahead of time we could get those items digitally at a later time. Thats my point here.
|
So yes, they told us ahead of time that we will be getting stuff that comes with GR for a little price. The question is how exclusive are these special Enhancements?
Take a chill and let them answer before you go crying foul or doom.
