Game freezes after 20-45 minutes

Hi, all. I'm hoping somebody can help me... Ever since I17 started, I've been unable to play the game for more than 20-45 minutes at a time. Checking in the task manager, the memory usage for the game keeps going up and up, until it reaches around 1.45 gigs of memory used...then video freezes, sometimes the game will just crash to desktop, often with a 'Send to Microsoft' error box, other times it'll just freeze and I'll have to kill the process to get my screen back. I've defragged, checked my video and sound drivers and updated those, my memory seems to be okay according to the tests I've done, I even unseated and reseated the memory sticks, no go. Don't know...I'm frustrated, I keep thinking there's some small fix that I'm missing somewhere, maybe somebody with more knowhow than me will be able to figure it out. Heck, for all I know this is all 'cause I haven't updated my VidiotMaps recently, keep forgetting...

Here's the HijackThis log:

I've been a little overzealous with ad-blocker programs, I realize, I got infected a month ago or so and I wanted the bugs killed dead, eradicated with fire, destroyed with atomic weaponry and then talked to rudely... Anyway, hope somebody can help.

My memory usage for CoH stays mostly around 1 GB.

The only obvious thing I can see is that you should upgrade to Windows XP SP3, although I'm not sure if that will solve you're problem.

There's a couple of memory leaks. Try the test server and see if the problem has been fixed in the latest update there.

I'm hoping je_saist can jog my memory here, but I seem to recall a problem with the 5xxx series running both Ambient Occlusion and ... either AA or AF. I just can't recall which it was.

Also, is there are reason you are running two anti-virus programs at the same time? That can generally cause a few problems.

I'd recommend killing off a lot of those background processes as well. The Java Update Scheduler is an easy one to spot as unneeded. I'd also kill off the Log Me In Hamachi stuff, AdAware and SuperAntiSpyware as well. I'd also set the FNPLicensingService.exe Service entry to Manual instead of Automatic. If you set it to Disabled it will just get set back to Automatic when you launch whatever Adobe product you have installed.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

I wondered about memory leakage...though I didn't want to be one to go 'OMG fix ur softwear!' Whether I was thinking it... I'll check things out on test, get a character and park myself in Wentworth's if I need to, memory usage seems to go up by leaps and bounds there.

UPDATE: Nope, same thing. Drat.

I rather hope I've got Ambient Whobewhatsis turned off, I tried turning it on and it made me nauseous...I have no idea what AA and AF are? I have turned off and/or uninstalled all my AV software aside from Avast, it seems to work the best anyway. SuperAntiSpyware I can't seem to get to go away, and I'm not totally certain I should...I hate having just one source of spyware protection, them things are nasty... Oh, I did turn off Avast's auto-update, thinking maybe this was caused by it constantly calling the mothership for instruction. Dunno.

I switched off Java Update (with pleasure), I can always turn Hamachi back on as required next time I want to play L4D2. Good catch on the Adobe, thanks. Unfortunately while I tease myself to think that the memory usage is going up more slowly, it's still out of control. I still wonder if it could be some proggie that's calling home for updates and other crud, but I'm not sure what it could be if so.

Sorry, I looked at your CoH Helper again and realized you DO have Ambient Occlusion set to OFF. I saw the Advanced Occlusion settings on YES and the Blur setting but missed the 2 lines between them. Just forget I said anything about that. I must have been tired reading that.

As for AA and AF, that's Anit-Aliasing and Anisotropic Filtering. You have them set to 2x and 16x respectively. Open your Catalyst Control Center and make sure that you have those two set to Application Controlled. Sometimes a setting that is different in the CCC from what the game is set at can cause problems that aren't as apparent.

Even if you don't uninstall SuperAntiSpyware, you can set it so that it doesn't run when Windows starts. There's no problem with multiple sources of spyware protection as I have Spybot and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware installed at all times, and will occasionally install SuperAntiSpyware as a middle step if it's a particularly nasty piece that I'm getting rid of. The three programs target things a little differently, so sometimes one will get rid of pieces the others won't, or I'll need to run one to get rid of some things that are keeping one of the others from working. I just don't let them run while I'm gaming. I want every ounce of CPU, Memory and bandwidth for the game.

I don't even browse the web while playing or listen to music, but I'm rather odd that way. According to some, I'm just rather odd period.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

I'm with you TJ, when is comes to turning my anti-virus proggy off only when playing. You were the one who suggested that a while back, and it really helped. I'd like to thank you for all the sage advice you passed along to the forum...I'm sure that others feel the same way. And remember, all great minds who do things their own way are often labeled as 'odd'. Here's to you, Oddfather..

Been futzing with this some more...installed SP3 (and acquired a strange bug where I keep getting stuck in forward motion, unable even to turn? Frantically hitting buttons seems to throw me into reverse sometimes...weird stuff), got myself up to date on patches, finally got the Catalyst install to work and got that up to date, very buggy software, and adjusted those settings so they're application-controlled...now I seem to be able to get up to 1.7-1.8 gigs of memory usage before I crash, I'm not sure if this is an improvement.

Same thing happens on test, exactly. I dunno, I'd cheerfully rip out all the Ultra Mode changes by the roots if it would let me play for extended periods with my friends, but without knowing if that's the cause I'm not sure I want to jump through those hoops. It still looks like a memory leak to me, but that just leaves me stuck until the PTBs fix it, so I'm certainly hoping this isn't the case.

Another thing I noticed is that you have two sound devices installed on your system. If possible, disable the device you're not using in Settings - Control Panel - System - Hardware tab - Device Manager - Audio Devices.

Also, update to Windows XP, SP3. Any worries you might have had with it when it was released years ago are well past.

That won't fix the memory leak problem, which is kind of erratic, but seems to be limited to ATI chipsets for the moment, unfortunately, judging from the complaints and reports of problems on this forum.

Run a test of your memory. It could be that one of the sticks/slots is causing the problem.

Actually, judging from the complaints and reports of problems in the Technical Issues and Bugs forum, it's Nvidia cards and Intel chips that are the ones giving the issues: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/forumdisplay.php?f=578

ATi problems seem to be view and far between.

Yeek, thread got busy while I was rebuilding my OS...looks like my Windows install was unstable. It's still not 100%, I wound up saying heck with it and doing what I'd been thinking of doing for a while, upgrading to 64 bit Windows 7, and installing 64 bit drivers where I could (oddly, Windows was convinced I should install a 32 bit video card driver...I overrode that and got one for my system). I now have the privilege of seeing my memory usage go DOWN in the game. Sat in an Arachnos lag-map villain-side for awhile, and my memory usage (on a demon summoning mastermind no less, flaming pets by her side) stayed at 800 megs usage. I'll be quick to say I don't give a damn if the game is using 3 gigs of memory (which it could I think under 64-bit), so long as I can play...thus far it's screaming.

My memory may be the next thing I update on this work-in-progress computer, memory tests say what I've got is fine but for some reason my 4 gigs is showing up as 3.3...regardless, for now the game is screaming (in a good way), on Ultra settings even. I'm a happy rabbit.

Overheating doesn't cause memory usage to jump in leaps and bounds. That's an unrelated issue. Also, in case you didn't notice, the OP has apparently solved the problem by switching from 32bit Windows to 64bit Windows and all its attendant 64bit drivers so your post was also not necessary.

I'm glad this ended up working out for you. For anyone else having the same problem: we've seen similar behavior (insanely bad memory leak) with some ATI Radeon HD 4*** series cards with the drivers that card ships with. Upgrading to the 10.4 drivers appears to have resolved the issue.

The mem leak isnt just from the Radeon Drivers. Its part of the game has been for years. THERE IS A MEM LEAK!!! been going on sence i have played the game for over 6 years now. I have turned it in many times and got told that i didn't know what i was talking about. So I went to an outside source (a programer buddie) and had him look at what was going on, yep mem leak. you need to go through and find it. dont matter which of the 4 comps I am on there Radeon or Nvidia. please fix this problem!!!

And omg got to say it!

Even if there is a memory leak with the game on it's own, does not mean a more serious one doesn't exist when combined with the above cards and drivers.

I don't think Broom was trying to imply that... since the first sentence of their post was

Basically saying, 'yes, may be a leak with the drivers, but that's not all of the problem'.

I did not mean to imply that the game is leak free, but if you are experiencing a memory leak that prevents you from playing for more than 20-45 minutes and it is not related to your graphics drivers, I would really like to hear about it.

Also, we've had a couple threads going in the last few months to try to identify leaks but we believe that we have resolved what we were able to identify. If you are experiencing another memory leak, especially if it's this bad, please PM me the details. We may need to start another thread to get some more information.

Edit: if this is happening all the time, no matter what you do, let me know. I don't personally get that behavior and it doesn't look like we're seeing it in QA, so I'll need specific information about your setup. If there are specific things you do to get it, that's extremely useful information to us

If there are specific things you do to get it, that's extremely useful information to us
What I can offer, TV, is an anecdote in the opposite direction.

For the longest time I ran CoH on an XP (x86) rig containing an ASUS mobo with NVidia video and 4GB of ram (2.5-3 GB available depending on my vid card - I went through a couple).

I do strange things like watch the real and virtual memory use of my applications. Before I16, CoH used to use around 500-750MB of real and virtual memory (1.0-1.5GB total) on load, and then relatively quickly rise to around 1GB of each (about 2.0GB total) as soon as I did anything non-trivial, and then it would slowly rise from there. In particular, every time I zoned (at least for the 1st time in a given zone) or met a large crowd of characters, my memory usage would increase. As far as I could tell, it would never go down. If it topped around 3GB of combined real and virtual memory it would crash. (This isn't totally unexpected, since 32-bit Windows limits processes to 3GB of addressable RAM.)

In I16, it felt like both my baseline and my rate of memory consumption increased. My game rarely reached the peak and crashed unless I did something like attended multiple zone raids in a row, but what looked like a "3GB crash" did happen to me several times in I16 - probably more in that than issue than had ever happened to me in all the issues before.

Since I17, what I find is that my initial memory use is higher - I load the game and the game image is pretty much at ~1.0GB each real and virtual memory use immediately, but I don't really seem to add much over time, or if I am, the rate is much lower, making it harder to notice.

I have a rig which uses both nVidia and ATI PCI-E cards. I have the same silly habit of watching my RAM usage. (Probably because of my job I guess) and have seen the exact same situation appearing after i17 was released. It doesn't matter which Video card (nVidia 9800 or ATI 4850) is being used for the game even when the unused card's drivers are completely unloaded. After 'X' interval, especially when I'm exiting missions, calling up the Costume panel, or entering the Auction panel. I found the programhas either crashed to crash reporter or hard locked.

Athlon X64 5000+ (2.6Ghz) 3GB RAM
ASUS (nVidia 420 series) Mobo
XP Pro SP3
All drivers up to date.

ATI HD 4850 512MB

or

nVidia 9800 512MB

That sounds likely to be a memory leak. Have you had it since I17 launched? Like I said: we're not seeing them internally anymore...but that doesn't mean we fixed the issue you're having. I need more details to know what was happening to you.

Simply open up the base editor in a medium or larger base and stay zoomed out and go afk. Or just let it sit there for awhile exit the editor and go about playing like you normally would and sooner or later you will crash or freeze. The game keeps using more and more memory and never releases it after using the base editor. I've seen cityofheroes.exe get to 1.7 gb in the task manager before. Usually crashes at 1.4 - 1.5 though.
