Television: Sorry for the late reply. XP SP3, Radeon 10.3 I BELIEVE but I'll doublecheck when I get home.

Thanks. Please try upgrading to 10.4 when you have time, but I believe we have reports of people who still have the leak with the 32 bit version of the 10.4 drivers as well when running on XP with the 5770. This is still really useful information if you could confirm it's the case for you, though.

You believe correctly, but also with the 5750. Figured I'd mention it so its known to others that it also has the same problem.

Confirmed. Upgraded to 10.4 drivers and behavior persists as before. Sitting idle at login screen and memory allocation increases by approx. 300KB/second.

We got the hardware, but we're still not able to reproduce this problem with any of the 5000 or 4000 series cards using the 10.4 drivers. However, the problem is extremely pronounced with the 9.8 drivers...but you're not running the old drivers. Any chance you didn't restart? (I know I'm reaching here). Anyone have creative ideas for what's going on?

Fun tidbit. Running on a system that can't handle Ultra Mode (HP Pavilion laptop) the memory usage is stable at login screen at 591,9**KB but the CPU usage spikes to around 50% (43-54)

HP 6530b, XP Pro running Intel Integrated graphics. More details?

Hey TV, go ask the code rikti monkeys what kind of processes would be running as early as the login screen that would run in that 300k-400k neighborhood to use?

I haven't investigated this yet, but there is something I might be able to contribute here. When I start the game client, after the login screen appears the game client seems to freeze for a few seconds. Freeze as in goes totally unresponsive and the window greys out (under Windows 7). Maybe five to ten seconds later, the game client comes back and lets me log in. Still trying to figure out why this is happening, but for me this only happens at initial startup: the problem doesn't recur during normal game play (not usually as far as I can tell).

It might be related to external drives I have connected. At one time, long long ago the CoH game client used to do a funny probe on all drive letters active on my desktop, which included drive letters I had that were associated with a media card 6-1 reader. This would cause the game client to often crash or do other bizarre things. Disconnecting the 6-1 made the problems go away. That was a while ago and two computers ago. But not long ago I had a "D drive" error pop up on me, but I didn't have the presence of mind to capture it. D: is my CDROM: no idea why the game would even be looking at it, and the error hasn't returned.

I'll try to make it a point to figure out what my client is doing on start up. Might be totally unrelated, or not. Hard to tell until you look.

New datum: Desktop (the one with the 5770) doesn't display the leak if you run in Safe Mode. However, like the laptop, it does run very high CPU activity, in the 80-90% range.

CoH has always maxed out the CPU (or as much as it can on a multi-core system) for as long as I can remember. But then again, I always disable vertical sync, so it's rendering as fast as it possibly can.

Guess I'm just used to games running in a tight loop.

Doing this for me as well (WinXP).

I have the game set for windowed mode. I've noticed that the little CoH tab in the tool bar will flash before "coming back", then the login inputs will pop on and I'm good to go.

I am having similar problems.

The game started getting sound loops that would freeze the machine ever since i 17 went live.Last night was so bad the whole pc was freezing up for a good 10 seconds at a time.

I contacted support and they got me to run the coh helper for a list of specs then suggested that i turn off everything in start up,run on no sound acceleration etc.

My pc is currently running coh with no sound acceleration in minimum gfx settings at a lower resolution and still the game is freezing up.

If they cannot sort it out i am sad to say it has made the game unplayable for me and eventually i will just stop playing.

Heres my file...

So same sound card, which is interesting. It looks like you're both running with two monitors as well?

Looking for any other similarities that would help us reproduce the problem.

This sounds like it might be a different problem. Have you noticed that you're running out of memory (in task manager) before the sound loop/crash?

This is my normal set up using the ATI HD 4850 to run both Monitors. I've also had the crash with only one monitor connected, and also running off an SB Live! Value PCI card instead of the onboard RealTek chipset. But it happens much more regularly with the configuration I posted.

EDIT: Yes I know "much more regularly" is unbelievably subjective, but in my defense I hadn't really been watching carefully until it started crashing predictably.

Last night's crash was after fighting a slew of Legacy Chain with particle effects going off all over the place. (I was on an Elec/Storm Corr).

It looks like you have both of your soundcards installed at the same time. I haven't experimented with sound cards as much as I should: were you able to just switch between the two sound cards, or does it always use the PCI card if it's plugged in and switch back to the onboard card when the PCI card is removed?

Also: you said you've crashed with just the one monitor connected and either sound card. Is this the same memory leak, running out of memory crash, or something different. We just recently fixed a really nasty crash while respec'ing for instance. I assume it's the same, just making sure.

Using one sound card at a time after disabling the unused one through the Device Manager. Same type/situation of crash.

I'll try running single monitor again to see if the Assertion Failure repeats and post the log.

UPDATE: I just finished running an hour with no crashing or even hesitation loading while using just a single monitor. Peak Memory usage (via Task Manager)was just above 900MB. Never really came close to 1.7GB+ I had been getting running dual monitor.

I'll keep banging away on it to see if I can reproduce the crash.

So I was just shooting in the dark on that one. Are we actually saying the second monitor is looking like it's causing the problem? That's extremely useful information.

Edit: (Thanks for testing so quickly by the way!)

"Are you pondering what I'm pondering?" Do you think it's a matter of splitting the output to two devices (whether audio, video, or what) but the garbage collection only cleaning up one of the twinned outputs?

That would explain how it might involve the graphics or sound, or even odd hardware configurations or mainboard designs involving neither. Pretty low level leak, too, if it's true.

(Just a thought, hope it's helpful. )

Is it possible for you to disable 3d rendering on one of your monitors when you have both of them up?

Should I attempt to repro this when I get home from work?

Please do if you can. I'd rest a lot easier if we knew this was the same problem.
