NCsoft Q1 2010 financials out: ouch.

The NCsoft Q1 2010 financials are out and things don't look good for CoH/V. Q1 covers January to March 2010, which includes the start of the GoRo pre-order offer (March 2, I believe).

In that period of time, CoH/V earned 3 348 M Won, which roughly translates to about US$2.9m (I've used an end of period exchange rate than an average over the 3 month period, but I don't believe there is much difference between the two results). Sadly, this is the lowest quarterly revenue generated by CoH/V in its history. It's a 13% drop on the previous quarter's earnings, with Q4 2009 being the previous record holder for the lowest revenue generated. In Won terms, it is also about half the revenue generated compared with year-on-year figures.

It's a result that is probably explained by the lack of content releases in Q1 2010 and that players may have adopted a 'wait and see' approach about Going Rogue.

DOOOOM comments incoming in 5, 4, 3, 2, ...

There are a lot more theories than your own. I would call it disingenuous to say it's "probably" that.

I'm not worried. Going Rogue should be great.

So, CoH/V bringing in 2.9m is bad?

Keep in mind, most of NCSoft's money comes from the Lineage games and Aion had a brisk start overseas. CoH/V will look like a smaller piece of the pie without failing or doing anything wrong.

CoX is now working on year seven and in an almost 1 1/2 half lull between major content (yes, I'm glancing over stuff like the Posi TF change, 5th Council TF and Mission Architect). CoH lulled before CoV and it repeats now before Going Rogue.

We all await Going Rogue eagerly. Then I want to see the magic numbers for Quarter 3 2010. If they're still that low... I'll /cry then join in DOOOM!

Until then... OMG Electrical Control wanting will continue for me. I'm fine, you're fine we're all fine.

Thank you, City of Heroes, for giving me a superhero social network combined with amazingly smooth game play. Petitions signed with realistic expectations.

I'll wait and see about that.

Were there any easily-recognized external influences during that quarter? The only one I can think of is Star Trek Online, but that didn't seem to have even the punch that Champions Online had.

There's also that little problem called the economy... but that's certainly not responsible for the entire lull.

COH will decline as time goes on and get a little bump up when new issues come out, especially a new issue with a box. Such is life in the MMO industry.

NCSoft, as a company, is doing VERY well. 4th quarter 09 and 1st quarter 10 are their 2 best quarters.

We're in good hands.

sounds about right .

content wise it has been lacking for awhile and let's face it ...less than stellar design decisions that has changed the game for the worse, yeah AE i'm looking at you.

I haven't purchased going rouge ...i'm in the waiting and seeing crowd things haven't been fully explained, but i know this if the max level you can get is 1-20 i'll probably pass it entirely since getting to that is a walk in the park.

IIRC, there wasn't a booster released this past quarter. That would make a difference too, wouldn't it?

1-20 is just the new starting content in the Praetorian zones - the Incarnate system is for 50s only, and the Going Rogue system is for 20-50

that's what i don't understand

"the Incarnate system"

so are characters are gonna be as strong as statesmen and recluse since they are Incarnate?

"what' up with that, i don't know"

the Going Rogue system is for 20-50

posi said the 1-20 stuff happens in praetoria so the 20-50 is ....a what?

"i don't know"

doesn't really give me warm fuzzes, if i don't know what i'm buying .

And how exactly did adding a feature that people have been requesting since the early days of CoH Beta, that has absolutely no negative impact on your ability to actually play the game, make it a "less than stellar design decision"?

The Incarnate System will allow 50s to become even more powerful than they are now, and they'll need their new powers to take on the enemies their going to face.
The Incarnate System content takes the form of some kind of zone events that happen only in the 4 new Praetroian zones.

They're moral missions that will give you choices in them - depending on what you choose to do, your morality meter will either go towards good or evil, which will eventually allow you to go rogue and travel to both sides of the game, and further moral chocies will let you completely switch sides.

Zone Events? I fragging hope not, its the zone events like the banners that are just about my only hate for this otherwise great game.

I really hope that zone events aint mandorty for the incaranate system.

Do you have any link or actual substance to linking zone events with Incarante content?

I don't suffer from altitis, I enjoy every minute of it.

Thank you Devs & Community people for a great game.

So sad to be ending ):

stupid idea to gate conent to enforced teaming

I think you should perhaps wait to see what the events actually are like before you decide if the system is ruined or not

Like Troll raves and Steel Canyon fires are examples of zone events that don't involve banners - plus, the Incarnate zone events might be able to be done solo, so you mighn't even need to team at all to unlock the Incarnate stuff.

EDIT: As for gated content, don't forget that for most players, TFs are gated content too, along with Giant Monsters, the Hamidon and the Rikti Mothership - so it's not like they haven't already been designing the tougher challenges in the game to be team focused.

On a very schadenfreude level, I'm enjoying watching people going "Oh yes, my opinion was so right, it must have been what cost the company literally millions." What have we tagged so far? Architect Missions, Going Rogue not launching when some hoped it would, the last issues not having what some consider new content...

It's interesting. Obviously, there was a misstep somewhere along the way, but when we cross from theories into "Oh, I know why.", it starts to sound as silly as putting together three consonants because you don't know how to quote someone else in the middle of a sentence.

The Martial Arts Booster was released Q4 2009.

Also, I fully expect Paragon Studios to announce a new title, perhaps before the end of 2010. NCsoft won't let a studio of 50 people continue to work on a title they see having trouble maintaining revenue. The fact Paragon has been hiring (heh, Neal Kettler just updated his LinkedIn profile - congrats to the new Technical Director at Paragon Studios!) and is announcing promotions despite not seeing any growth in CoH/V really points to a new title under development. I don't know what it will be - CoH 2.0 or Positron's Grand New Musical MMO Spectacular - but it is underway.
