Hello from Paragon Marketing
No offense to Black Pebble, but marketing shouldn't be allowed within 100 yards of actual content. ESPECIALLY not someone else's marketers.
Dec out.
less of all the ideas and tell us what has been implimented/discussed to help gain future players ESPECIALLY the EU servers! how can we give ideas when we dont know what is already going on behind the scenes. and is there any ifo you can give us on why a server list merge is out of the question as you get to speak to devs face to face.
fatalnova questions: how can we give ideas when we dont know what is already going on behind the scenes. |
Dec out.
This is great. No one on this conference call knows I'm forum trolling.
Wouldn't there be concerns of tackiness if you started seeing Billboards advertising shampoo? PS - Did you notice I ignored the bacon question? |
So long as it didn't cause a performance hit, it would be cool if clicking on real life advertising billboards opened your browser and took you to that products website.
The City of Heroes Community is a special one and I will always look fondly on my times arguing, discussing and playing with you all. Thanks and thanks to the developers for a special experience.
No, that's called a living breathing City that looks more like the real world. The only problem I have with in-game advertising is that there was only like one billboard.

We could be our own little Google. I like the idea.

David Nakayama is already hired. Check. Troy Hickman has done the comic in the past, namely the most popular arc of the run that was turned into a popular arc of missions. As long as you pay him at least two dollars, he's on board. Check.
This would be the All-Star Team of CoH comics. Hickman had the best touch with story and dialogue, not to mention fleshing out the characters, and judging from numerous comments on the board, even the POTENTIAL of another Sister Psyche bathing sequence by Nakayama would ensure enough sales to turn a profit, ie, Bucks. Return on capital invested. If little indie comics can make money, a revived CoH comic with THOSE TWO could certainly make more than a few bucks. Black Pebble, you guys are most of the way there already. You get those two together and you would have a GREAT comic. Read Troy Hickman's arc in the back issues of the CoH comic, and compare that to the recent Through the Mirror arc, which is a fine arc that simply has some mediocre writing in stretches. There is a REASON why Cyrus Thompson's statue is in front of the train station in Kings Row, and there is a REASON David Nakayama was hired to do art. Imagine a Going Rogue comic tie-in done by those guys. Make it happen, BP! |
If such a project ever happened, I'd be more than willing to be a part of it, as I love CoH like Elvis loved fried sammiches.
Troy Hickman - So proud to have contributed to and played in this wonderful CoH universe
As always, thanks for your kind words.

MMM...fried sammiches! As long as we keep the comic in perspective as to where it lies in relation to the game, we can be ok. I think a lot of folks began to expect direct comic-to-game tie-ins a little too often. I think the comic should be a tool to flesh out, not only the characters, but places and stories that we already know. Backround info that we can't get in-game and a better understanding of the world we now inhabit.

<snip> I'd very much like to NOT have plans interrupted/destroyed last-minute by you guys announcing your own event if you show at one of these. I'm sure people looking to run similar events at other cons (like DragonCon) would deeply appreciate the same consideration.

Mmm...oh who'm I kidding? Yeah, there was begging involved. I can't lie.
So if you're NOT gonna come (again) this year, "threw us a freakin' bewn" willya? Swag would be appreciated.
Oh and please note, trial copies of Tabula Rasa do NOT count as swag. Even less so this year than the did last year. Maybe more like laser pointers and capes.
Or LASER CAPES!

I actually know how you can make smartphone apps available without actually developing them - it involves creating an API for smartphone developers to use. Things like being able to read in-game email (but not send for obvious reasons), see if your friends are online, etc. PM me if you want more details, I don't really want to post something long and derail the discussion here on a fairly minor point.

"The Most High has spoken, even with His own blood," Melancton replied. "Surely we know."
I had an advertising idea for CoX quite a while ago. Advertising Partnerships. Ads in game help CoX and the advertiser. But how could advertising help the player directly? Enter into advertising agreements with companies where they not only pay for face time with your customers but also to produce new content.
Example: Enterprise Rent a Car A fun, detailed and elaborate story arc, at the end of which you get a car temp power that you can drive around on the streets. Players could choose to do the arc or not. If they really like it, the player will have a positive view of the company advertising. Add to that, a cross promotion where they put pamphlets at their terminals with info and directions on how to find the game and the story arc. Some people hate advertising no matter what. You'll never win them over. But most people are open minded and would love advertising that actually makes the game more fun! |

I'll miss you all.
(I know, like you haven't seen enough of these right?)
I just ran into an issue the other day, it may be more about production than marketing, but I figured you could at least forward it to the right place.
A buddy of mine plays CoH casually, and for his birthday last week I wanted to get him something game related. Since he doesn't own any of the Super Booster sets I thought one of those would make a good gift.
Except it turns out there is no way to gift a booster pack. The online purchase can only applied to your own account not someone else's account. Nor is there any kind of NCsoft gift card I could purchase in its place.
It seems to me that creating some way to gift booster packs and the like could only help sales.
http://www.change.org/petitions/ncso...city-of-heroes#
Yeah, you have to log in as his account (which is a no-no if they are not there.)
I need to buy this Mutant Pack for one of my friends when it comes out.
Still here, even after all this time!
Besides, I'm moving to Seattle at the end of June in search of employment (there is NOTHING for me or John here in Phoenix - at least up there I stand a better chance of getting a job).
You'd be better off calling for Marketing to really start taking advantage of David's team to crank out vids for the game. David's got some great ideas for videos.

One of the things the devs have to consider when adding features to the game is how the changes are going to affect people with varying degrees of system power; I think that with CoH, the devs have picked a good range of steps from bare minimum to full ultra mode that lets players pick a good balance between graphics quality and render speed. But from what I saw in Aion, the required graphics levels push too close to the capacity of the average system. It's pretty, but sacking playability for chrome is a bad tradeoff.
"But in our enthusiasm, we could not resist a radical overhaul of the system, in which all of its major weaknesses have been exposed, analyzed, and replaced with new weaknesses."
-- Bruce Leverett, Register Allocation in Optimizing Compilers
Based on what I saw when I was playing it, what was in that video may have been generated with in-game content (i.e., the same way that cutscenes are in CoX), but parts of it misrepresent the actual gameplay unless you've got an absolute bleeding-edge system. For example, the mass battle scenes; from my experience with fort raids in the Abyss, rather than having mass battles with thirty or forty players on each side fighting as shown in the trailer, what you have is a massive lag slideshow where the render limit keeps you from seeing more than about 20% of the participants (I was reminded unpleasantly of the old Hami raids with 240 people in zone). And they're proposing to do an 'ultra mode' makeover of the Aion graphics, which will increase the lag further.
