Discussion: Two Ways to Get Going Rogue

I'll just do Complete pack via Steam and call it a day. I want to get diskless versions of as many games I want to play as possible and CoH is one of the few left.

I'm going to assume that it pre-purchase will be 5 dollars just like COV was.

Also, it doesn't seem very fair that we can't just pre-order the Collectors Edition instead.

That is the only thing you need to ask yourself.

If yes, go with the pre-purchase.

If no, wait and buy the Full Package and save $15.
This sums it up pretty well, thank you Zombie Man.

I'll be waiting until July to buy the Complete edition. I like having the updated discs to make those times after a reformat go faster. I do copy my CoH folder and burn it to disc now, but I've had a bad run of luck recently with DVD burners, (I'm on my 3rd in less than a year) and discs I thought were good have turned out useless. (i.e. they read fine after I burned them, but now can't be read by any other reader)

Anyway, saving money is never a bad idea and since I don't play villainside I'd only be able to use Dual Pistols early.

So for me, it's about new content more than new shinies and I can wait.

Definitionally, a "pre-purchase" is just that, you purchase it before you can have it. So, I fully expect the "pre-purchase" to be $29.99. They use the term a number of times, so it is not an error of communication, plus they use the term "preordering" when saying that doing so at retail will get you nothig extra.

CoV had a boxed Pre-ORDER, which was basically a hold slip for a copy of the game in a retail outlet.

Meh!

I see no value in pre-ordering. Looks like I can take a vacation now and wait for July.

Now, if they wise up and let us get the Complete Collec...er wait...nvm. Marketing Hates Us!

At any rate, I'm betting that the item pack is either $9.99 or $4.99. $9.99 seems like a good number, because that's the difference between just plain Going Rogue and the Complete Collection. (Okay, it's a penny off, sue me.) $4.99 seems like a good number, because it acknowledges that those who just wait and buy the Complete Collection are getting a free month (~$15) of play.

So if the upgrade pack is $9.99, you're basically paying $15 to get early access to Dual Pistols and Demon Summoning. If the upgrade pack ends up being $4.99, you're paying $10 to get early access to the additional powersets.

I know, some folks don't like the idea that it will cost extra to get early access to these things. If you're one of those folks, there is always the cheapest option: Wait until July, pay $40, and get ~$15's worth of play time with your purchase. You'll get everything for a discount net price of around $25. If it makes you feel better, I guarantee that your dual pistol or demon summoning whatever would have been thought of as just another flavor-of-the-month character. Of course, there's also the downside that your dual pistol or demon summoning whatever will be (presumably) forever barred from earning the 6th anniversary badge.

But the point is, what's more important to you? $10-$15, or having three to four months of extra play time with your dual pistols/demon summoning character? I'm not suggesting one way or another is better, it's just your personal preference.
Just gonna quote this, because I'm seeing far too many "BAWWWWW I can't have my cake and eat it too!" posts in here. So you can't have all your precious new shinies early and get a free month of play; big f'n deal. Life isn't fair.

As for me, considering that I've lived in the UK for a few years and my account is still North American, it's been a long time since I've been able to buy a retail version of ANY CoH product. The last actual retail box I bought was Good vs Evil. So y'know what I'm gonna do? I'm gonna plunk down my money for the regular edition of GR so I can have fun with Dual Pistols and Demon Summoning early, then spring for the upgrade on launch day so I can have my shinies. And I'm not gonna complain about the fact that a free month wasn't added to my subscription -- between 30 days "free" playtime and in-game stuff that will be available for me until NCSoft shuts the game servers down for good, I'm picking the latter at this point.

But you know the biggest reason why I'm not going to complain about this? Because NCSoft is a business. Yes, they make video games, but they're still a business. And all things considered, they've been VERY good to us CoH players as far as not nickel-and-diming us for every little thing. Let's face it: we've had multiple free updates that other MMOs would have absolutely NO issue asking cash for. And in fact, NCSoft isn't really nickel-and-diming us here, either; it all comes down to how you want to spend your approximately X dollars/pounds/euros/whatever: get some goodies now with the option to buy the rest later on, or wait until all your goodies are bundled together and have an extra 30 days for showing some patience. Both ways are equally as valid as each other unless, again, you thought you'd get to have your cake and be able to eat it too. I freely admit that I originally intended to pre-order the Complete Edition when I still thought doing so was possible. My plans have changed, and now I'll just have to split up my payment. Or ... maybe not even buy the Complete Item pack if it turns out that I have no real interest in the extras, thereby saving money. But I'm not going to cry about it, I'm not going to try and petition NCSoft to change their marketing strategy, and I'm not going to accuse NCSoft of trying to squeeze every last cent out of me. I'm merely going to evaluate the available options and determine which one, if any, are best for my personal situation. Like an adult.

... And as far as wanting a retail box for future installs: why don't you just manually back up your files to disc? It's fairly straightforward, and that way you can actually have less to re-install than if you were to use the latest retail disc. *shrug* Just sayin'.

Sorry that went so long; it's 6:40 AM here, I'm sick as a dog with the Norovirus, and feeling very opinionated right now.

At a store like Gamestop, yes, probably. But the phrasing on the announcement seems to imply that you won't get a code to use the powersets early unless you do the pre-purchase through the NCSoft online store.

OR

2) Wait for the Complete Collection, which gets you one month of free play (and CoH/V if you don't have them yet) in addition to the item pack. You don't get DP and DS until GR launches though.

So either way, you don't get everything unless you buy both. It depends on which you want more, a free month or early access to the powersets. Personally, I'll take the powersets.
I don't mind paying for Going Rogue. I don't mind paying for preorder four times (myself, husband's, brother's, and mother's accounts). I don't mind buying the more expensive, complete pack to get everything, that's what I was already planning to do.

I do mind having to physically hunt down a vendor to get the complete pack preorder or having to buy both versions digitally. That's a major PITA, unnecessarily complicated, and an obvious money grab. I am not amused. At all.

Edit: I love DP. It's the most fun set I've ever played in this game, in 5 1/2 years of buying everything right down to the last costume pack. This marketing nonsense, however, has me reevaluating how much I want it. It just leaves a bad taste in my mouth to be so obviously taken for a ride.

I think $5 is fair considering the other stuff that won't be included:
  • The original game(s)
  • 30 Days of Game Time

Oh, I know that, and I also have an external HDD which I fortuitously got just before my laptop died. But burning a DVD would actually require me to, you know, remember to actually burn the DVD. Fortunately, the Ex-HD does it automatically.

But I like having the originals.

Well...that's pretty lame they aren't going to put boxes in stores here in Europe. Yes...so you can get it digital, no problem for me but I already know this game, for someone who doesn't a nice box could be a reason to buy a game or remind people that yes City of Heroes does still exist.

Ah well

Wil there be any form of discount to multiple accounts?

Or i have to get my own discount again with some nifty USD/EURO conversion stuff? (bet 10 bucks the EU price will be identical to US price).

I'm pretty much forced now to get GR on more then 1 account, there is no such feature for accounttransfer nor character(cross-sea)transfer.

Yes, you get more money from me this way, but this getting a little pathetic.

Eh, I have so many alts waiting in the queue to be played that waiting until July or whenever to get the GR complete pack won't be an issue. Me likes discount months!

ok, honestly, this is convoluted beyond necessity. It also , for lack of a better word, kind of stupid. I REALLY hope that they dont charge above 9.99 for the pack, that would be initial vibora bay announcement level bad. beyond that, it isnt ideal, but i am getting it, I will pre-purchase and if the pack is more than 10 buck, then i will complain loudly, but will still get it.

I will give them credit with the earlya ccess powerset thing. essentially that turns players into ingame billboards for other players. Player a prepurchases and teams with player b, who was vacillating between purchase of the expansion and doesnt muck about with the test server. player a has the new shineys and player b gets essentially a gr commercial throughout his teaming experience. player b buys the expansion, and paragon didnt really need to do anything, not unclever(unlike the method of delivery)

Hi,

can I get a clarification on the free months game play time please.

If I purchase the version that gives this, will it affect in any way the dates that my Vet's badges are awarded?

Thanks.

Cheers

Well, this comes down to a real test of will for me. I have like three or four ideas for DP toons I want to start and a couple for Demon MMs. Yet for the last say two months I've been doing just about nothing but AE scripting. My time is limited in the game so it's not like I can leisurely do both.

So do I prepurchase and let my arcs slide or don't and buckle down???

You know, it could be worse. They could have pre-order goodies from 50 different stores that are all different and only 3 of which are available in Europe, but there's no way anybody could get all of them.

"Pre-order Going Rogue from Kentucky Fried Chicken and get the Colonel Sanders costume set!"

I think it would have made things easier if they just said you can pre-order the basic or collectors edition at the beginning of March but these would only be digital copies.

Thinking about it I believe they have not allowed the pre-order collectors because there is a box set coming out and those details won't be finalised before the beginning of March.

Just my thoughts on the subject.

From the looks of it I will get the normal pre-order at the beginning of March for main account, and just upgrade that at the beginning of July and then buy a Collectors version for my second account when that comes out.

And I would like a new shiney box for Europe to - kind of feels like they have given up on advertising the game outside of North America

Wich, for example, they sadly did on MAG. On top of that, they seperated the EU and US codes, making them not exchangable.

But they have different codes here also, each time i buy a pack, i have to pay close attention in wich store i am, not buying the wrong one. (EU pack only to be applied EU account, same for US account).

Seems the "sound" decision (economically) to to ignore the new powersets and go for getting everything on release for 10-15 bucks less.
This is the sound decision, but Marketing, bless their shrivelled little black hearts, know there's plenty of people who won't be able to resist the "Play it now" allure of Pistols and Demons.

I'm not one of them though, no particular interest in playing either at the mo so I'll wait ta.

Marketing (bless their shrivelled little black hearts). Chiefly because they know there are people like your wife out there I'm afraid. You're best option is to encourage your wife not to give into it if at all possible. Best way to show disapproval towards any sort of business model is to vote with your wallet. Or you can give into it but complain loudly about it on the boards, whichever is good.

Gotta love the marketing department. Give with one hand (early release of the two new Sets), take with the other (you end up paying a tenner for the privilage). Very Faustian.

Okay I am a little irritated by this. Yeah its good that we'll be getting the GR expansion and that there are a number of ways to buy it.

HOWEVER: Once again there is no retail box presence in the EU at all. That is ridiculous. It must be well over 3/4 years since I have seen a single City Of box in ANY shop in the UK at all. Mission Architect was a golden opportunity for you to get some presence back in the market but you said at the time that wasn't going to happen. I understand that some shops would question putting a 5 year old game on the shelves, but you got them to do it in North America so you should be able to do it in the EU. Now another fantastic opportunity to get more players back onto the EU end of things comes along and you're throwing it away?

Sorry guys, but from where I'm standing it seems you're turning away or deliberately digging your own grave in the EU.

Just an additional thought. Because we can't pre-order the Complete Collection, there will be a NC Store feeding frenzy of people trying to order it on the day of release. IN ADDITION there will also all those people who have pre-ordered GR but want to upgrade on that day to the full package.

Anyone who has tried to get a booster pack on day of release knows the pain of that. But it's going to be much much worse for this.

Does that strike anyone as a good plan?
