Try an ITF where someone doesn't want SB'd in the caves. Then try to keep SB on everyone else while they run around like chickens with their heads cut off. My point was that when playing Kins, it is very easy to mistakenly distribute SB to those that don't want it, especially during more intense moments.

In any case, those that don't ask for SB don't bother me. Those that scream for SB while I'm focusing on keeping the team from wiping with my minimal tools for mitigation upset me. I left an ITF over that during Rommie's fight.

My experience playing a buff-oriented character appears to be completely different than yours.

I probably wouldn't want to play with them, but only because if they are so focused on DPS to not accommodate a player's play style then that is not my idea of "fun".

I don't focus on getting to 50 the quickest, I focus on enjoying the game. I always have.
It's nice that your focus is fun in a video game. I like speed runs from time to time for the challenge as well as I sometimes have time constraints that mean I don't have two hours to do something. Anyway, I enjoy efficiency, so I'm beginning to get the picture. We have very, very different views on a video game.

I've made my fair share of mistakes in the past, and I don't usually worry if someone buffs or fails to buff me by accident.
I've teamed with plenty where this is not the case.

Quote:
I do get annoyed if I get boosted into a group and die because someone assumes that I want it. I'll make a note on the character and if they do it too often I'll let them know.
Which is why a good kin won't SB you mid-run.

Quote:
I've found the exact opposite. I had super speed on one character for six months trying to get used to it. I prefer any other means of transportation over super speed. I'd use hover over it (and have).
I'm going to assume you play a lot of blueside. I play redside and superspeed works great at getting around in an arguably more difficult navigational setting. It took a while to get used to it, and on some characters, the runspeed is actually capped. I love speeding to the next mob (I'm a brute, so fury is always on my mind). Hover is the devil, with it disabling Lightning Rod on my brute. Meh.

I don't have an issue with the Taxibots. I've known several and people that do similar tasks on other servers too. Generally they are nice, helpful people. Even the one person that slightly annoys me from time to time, I respect (TonyV aka Taxibot Belle).

However when anyone tells someone else:
They have clearly demonstrated to me that they seek either cookie-cutter builds to team with or have a predefined notion of what a power set "should" do. Neither of which I do. I don't like people trying to dictate how I play my characters.
When I read that quote in context, it sounds like that player is suggesting they abandon the build program and actually focus on what the powers do in game. I may have misread it.

In any case, it would be a nicer game if both sides would give the other slack. Maybe that buff on you mid-team was an accident during a very intense moment, or maybe they don't like SB because it kills their FPS. I do try to oblige requests, but circumstances often dictate principle.

I'm also wondering just how old your computer is. I sometimes play CoH on my 5-year old laptop, with 1 gig ram, 1.3 gig processor, and onboard intel vid card. It loads things a bit slow and I run graphics at a minimum, but I don't take a huge FPS hit. If you're running something even slower than that - wow.

Since I'm the one that mentioned SB crashes:

I play on a two-year old computer that was state-of-the-art when purchased. 3 Gig dual-core processor, 2.75GB RAM, nVidia 9300 GE video card.

My computer is not old, it is not slow, it is not broken. It is only City of Heroes that gives me any issues.

two things, 1)most drive by buffers buff and leave giving you no time to say anything back. sometimes you dont even get a name because your doing something.

2)just because a buffer believes he's helping doesnt mean he actually is! i want your buffs in a team(never SB) i dont want your buffs when im in oro or at the market or in the univ. people that think that buffing is good, random buff everyone. that thinking needs to go away. times change, buffers mindsets should too!

I'm sorry that you feel it is not helpful. I respectfully disagree but, that is neither here nor there. This mindset does not need to be changed. Sorry, but, being helpful to fellow players should not be discouraged. Ever.

To be perfectly honest, I don't. You're absolutely right that keeping 7 other characters constantly speed boosted is a nuisance - so I don't. My first priority is anyone with endurance issues, followed by the most 'bang for the buck' - if we have one AoE blaster, I'll keep that person SB'ed.

Right. Everyone should go around thinking "I COULD help you, but you can go die as far as I care" instead. As opposed to the "Hey, someone actually saved me without me asking and let me win the fight" that gets mentioned many, *many* times over - and often as the introduction to the COH community itself in game, giving most a *good impression.*

<sarcasm>Selfishness is obviously the way to go, ignore everyone else who could possibly use help and appreciate it, in fact, we should just stand around and laugh as someone gets defeated. </sarcasm>

Sounds like a issue with your system though or your internet connection. My old system was lower spec then that and I never had a issue with SB and it was a Pentium D 805 2.66 ghz with a GeForce 5700 GT and 4 GB of DDR2.

So I doubt highly its the game since not everyone has this problem with SB. I'd take a guess either your video card is whack, or you have a memory issue. If I was betting? Video card.

But the computer you just described? Not really state of the art 2 years ago. Especially not that video card. Its a card primarily for HD video, not gaming. The 9300 GE, AFAIK know was just a rebrand of the 8200.

Get a new video card. Someone in the Tech forum could probably help you out.

Seeing as most systems don't crash with the application of speedboost, I'm pretty sure it's not CoX.

Which was pretty much exactly my point. When diagnosing a problem the first question is: Does this happen just to me, or to everyone?

If it happens to everyone its the application.

If it just happens to one or a small handful of people its probably hardware/system related on their own end.

I'd still bet money its that video card. You'd be better off with a 7600 GT then that thing for gaming. And just a cursory search shows its a card prone to choppiness in games.

I'd head to the tech forums when you have time. Crashing when SB is applied is not a common problem. I know at least some nVidia drivers have had issues with the game, and somehow when I installed Aion, CoH turned into a black screen. An update from the 1.8 to 1.9 series or something like that solved my issue.

I stopped keeping up with technology 5 years ago, but I'd take a look at the drivers for that video card. I think your crashing problem is fixable without having to buy anything new.

I do NOT SB anyone that doesn't stick with the group. I have much better uses for my time than to be chasing after demanding loners.

Yes, because up until last year my system ran better on blue (more on this in a bit). The only time I played red was with extremely small teams. Order of travel powers I prefer: Flight, Teleport, Super Leap, Super Speed.

Actually I think I got the context quite clear. Let me highlight some of it for you:
Quote:
Fourth .. Forbin thank you so much for adding fuel to the recent flame fire over Empathy. WHYwould you even bother to take the power set and not take all the good things it offers? Unlike so many other buffing sets one huge advantage of Empathy is there are at least 3 power that actually affect and help you solo or on a team. SO unless you don't feel the need to be able to recover End and heal faster alonng with being able to heal yourself at least takie all three of your auras. Oh and please don't team with that character EVER. When I join a team with an EMP/ Defender or a /EMP Controller, especially if I am specifically asked to join for my buffs, I use CM and Fort s fast as they recharge and have them slotted to do so quickly. Builds like the one you are describing are the reason EMP is considered the "HEALOR" powerset and so many bad ones exist these days it gives those of us that know how to use our powers a bad name. At high levels unless you are facing a heavy hitting AV healing is not what we do best. Hitting the team with CM so they don't spent half their time held, immobbed, asleep, or disoriented an FORT to buff their defense and ability to hit are. I also play Thermals and while the buffs are great not one of them affects me so solo my whole power set is pretty much useless aside from heal and on a team I am the only one I can't buff so if I am held or asleep or stunned no one is getting buffed. I don't know WHAT planner you are looking at but delete it and use what the powerset gives you to HELP your team.
I think I got the context quite well. Wendy seems intent on telling Forbin what exactly is wrong with his build and then proceeds to berate him for it. She goes further and tells him to delete the character "so he can create a better one." Better for who? Well it would be better for her play style, but maybe not for his. I know I've built my empath without some of the powers she has insisted are "needed" and it has done very well over the years (both solo and on teams).

Like I said, I don't need anyone to tell me how to build my characters. Because I don't build generic characters, I know that my play style will not mesh with hers. So I want to be proactive by not teaming with her in the first place.

In general, I do the same. I'm not here to be a rabid anti-buff. I like to play the buff ATs more than the damage dealers. However, I don't buy the argument that "just because my machine isn't affected, it is obviously the fault of your computer." The logic fallacy of that statement is gaping.

Ok, in order:

I started out in 2005 with a Celeron 1.8 GHz with 1 GB ram and a GeForce 2 graphics card. I ran with lower settings but it was still playable. The only thing at the minimum specs for the game was the graphics card. However Speed Boost would either cause a slide show or crash my system, just like being on a Hami Raid (Issue 6). I think in both cases that I got down to .5 FPS before the crash.

In 2006, I got a GeForce 6600. I didn't raise my graphics settings a lot, but kept particles to nil as well as some other settings. I could actually participate in Hami Raids without crashing often. If I reduced some graphics settings the Hami Raids wouldn't crash me, but Speed Boost did (and reduced my FPS at LEAST 10 FPS, if not more).

At the end of 2007, I got an AMD 64 Dual Core 2.6 system with 2 GB ram and an onboard nVidia chipset. Zoning to Ouroboros had a 50-50 chance of crashing me to the desktop. Speed boost would lower my FPS, but didn't crash me as often.

At the end of 2008, I got a nVidia 8600 GTX card and a new power supply to run it. I can zone freely to Ouroboros, my machine can keep up with speed boost, but I still don't like it.

[edit]Above dates now correct, and I'll add that this year I've upgraded my ram, but will have to wait a bit till I get Windows 7 to fully use the extra 4 GB of ram.[/edit]

I haven't tested if I still drop FPS, but I suspect that after that Kinetics overhaul a while back the problem lessened. That overhaul, if people forget, caused some of the Kinetics powers to crash some systems (shock!) because it slammed the sound card with a sound for each target hit. Higher end systems could handle the extra CPU/sound card cycles needed, some couldn't. Given the attitude of some of the posters here, that problem wasn't with the game, it was with customer's computers.

The problem with that kind of thinking is that we'd still have issues, even though customer's computers were in spec (and a bit above average) for the game. These same people that constantly tell others to upgrade their system blindly forget the fact that if the game is constantly needing to be run on only high or bleeding edge systems then the user base as a whole cannot keep up and the game loses customers.

Again, a non sequitur, or you should stress "probably". You have absolutely no way of knowing if it is the game or the hardware.

Eh I was going to make a long reply, but I'm not going to bother if someone doesn't even understand what logical fallacy or non sequitur is when tossing around words.

I stick to my opinion, that card is a piece of junk. Any comments I can find on it are people complaining about its poor/choppy/lagging performance in games, and its really just a POS.

Don't believe me? Try googling it

I understand perfectly what a logical fallacy is. Do you?

You are saying that:

System A (yours).
System B (hers).
C is the game.

You are saying that because A works with C and B is not working with C that means B is faulty. This ignores the possibility that the problem might be C, thus a logical fallacy.

Given that any player can point to a dozen acknowledged bugs in the game, and unofficially many more exist, it doesn't follow that the problem is the other computer.

Edit:
Anyways the graphics card and system exceeds the required specifications for the game:

Except that C is constant between both cases, yet only one crashes. It's clear which is the culprit (assuming the absence of an interaction). I'm interested in how you think that the game client can be flawed yet the problem only occurs rarely and on dissimilar systems.

Now here's a real non sequitur. Just because there are bugs in the game, it doesn't follow that all crashes are caused by bugs. In addition, "speedboost crashes the client" is not a known or unofficial bug.

No, Emberly, he's right. Just because C is a constant doesn't mean that it isn't C'c interaction with B that is causing the problem. It does Not logically follow that the problem is B. It may be Strongly Suggested, but it is not true by necessity.

I've cited several examples already. It is the rare bugs that drive coders nuts due to the fact that they are hard to repeat. It doesn't mean that a bug may not exist just because it can't be repeated.

C being constant does not follow that it is stable or bug free.

Once a bug can be repeated, it makes its way to the Known Issues list. As far as an unofficial bug, do you have some inside knowledge at NCsoft? I've seen reports, and I've personally experienced it in the past, of this type of crash. So I don't care if you think what it status is, to me the long standing nature suggest a bug to me.

I think I got the context quite well. Wendy seems intent on telling Forbin what exactly is wrong with his build and then proceeds to berate him for it. She goes further and tells him to delete the character "so he can create a better one." Better for who? Well it would be better for her play style, but maybe not for his. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
No I think you don't. My point was Forbin said he was putting together a build with EMP and planning to only take Healing Aura. There have been multiple threads on these forums an player's guides, Planners, etc showing that of all the powers Empathy has that is the least effective especially at higher levels. Heal Other does more tham twice the amount of actual healing and I have used it numerous times to keep a Stone Tanker alive and battling against an AV. Recovery and Regen Auras not only help the team they also help the player himself .. something almost no other buffing set does. MY POINT was why take EMP at all if you aren't planning to use it? Hey he has some PvP build in mind where he never plans to use that character for anything else FINE. He should still take the Regen and Recovery Auras to aid himself in healing and recovering end faster. Whatever else he want's to do is his business but there have also been threads here claiing that Empathy sucks mainly because there are way too many players out there with it that don't have a clue what they are doing.

And no this doesn't just apply to EMP. You like custome builds fine... Do you ever lead teams? I am sure you do. Okay you invite a tank and after about the third mob, with the team taking huge amounts of damage, you check the tankers build and discover, in the learly 40 levels, he doesn't have Taunt. In fact his so called strategy seems to be run it, stir everythuing up, and then run away bringing the entire mob rushing toward the team reay to destroy anything that moves. When you ask the tank why he doesn't have Tant his reply is " Oh this is a concept build and Taunt just doesn't fut my idea for my character." ... I was on that team against Malta and the team leaders reply was .. "Yeah well a Tank that can't tank isn't part on MY concept either." and then he kicked the guy. I teamed with a KIN that the Stone Tank leaing invited and we soon discovered had no SB or Increased Density. His reason "Well they don't help me when I solo soI just didn't bother with them." Once again Poof the player was gone. You want to call that COOKIE CUTTER Fine but if a player is going to run around advertising in broadcast "LFT" and I am a KIN! There are certain things teams assume you will bring to that team to HELP. If you don't have them . in most cases you are viewed as being there just to spam XP and will, over and over, find yourself back on the street LFTing. People love Rad/Rad when fighting a Giant Monster or takng on a tough AV for the debuff it brings.. don't bother to take them and you just disappointed 7 other players and made their job a whole lot tougher.

Oh and since it seems you play on Triumph and I play on Virtue RELAX I think we can safely assume we will never see one another in game. Frankly if you showed up with some strange build that was minus the powers that can actually help a team the friends I play with with kick you so fast you'd been outside wondering what new weapon the villains had that could do it. I solo and team and thanks to dul builds and plenty of influence I actually have build set up for each including ones with Empathy. If I am soloing why waste a power selection on Heal Other, Resurrect, CM. or Fortitude? I can't use them on myself so I take powers that can. When I put together a TEAM build I not only take those I enhance them to maximize their strength and make them recharge faster. I have NO idea what you do and fortunately sounds like I never have to find out.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I have told countless players there is no ONE way to play this game and be succesful. If it works for you and it isn't hurting anyone else then it's a perfectly acceptable way to play the game. You like custome builds and somehow make that work for you fine. I like to team and gear my builds, including attack, to providing as much help to the teams I join as possible. I have had Team leaders send me tells at the end of a mission or a Task Force thanking me for the good job I did. That was on a Pick up Group not my usual group of friends I play with when they are available. I have seen multiple posts here where you have spent a considerable amount of time quoting anyone who has an opinion you disagree with so you can comment on how wrong they are and, in your opinion only, why you are right. Sort of seems to me like you have the attitude that YOUR way is the only one that can possibly be right and we all must be insane for not seeing that.

This thread is about Drive by Buffing. If anyone bothered to read my first two posts I agree completely that buffing me, or anyone else, while I am in Wentworths, at the Trainer, or in a Store is completely useless and some what annoying. Teleporting some hapless player to the top of a building and dropping them or TPing them into a huge mob they stand no chance of defeating is grieving. Me seeing a player that's practically dead and facing a mob about to send him or her to the hospital .. and dropping down to heal them, buff them so they recovery end and health, faster, CM (if needed against that mob) and Fort to bost their ability to survive and earn XP instead of heading to the hospital is not. There is not a GM in this game that will ever disagree with that statement. I am not hurting anyone I am helping them. The argument that Patrol XP makes healing unnecessary is flawed at best... The less Patrol XP I have to use to remove debt the more I have available to earn XP at 150% instead of 100% so if I keep you out of the hospital and on the street I am helping you level faster. I will continue to do exactly what I have been doing for almost 50 months in game and since it bothers you so much .. I have 40 characters on Virtue, over the 2 accounts I pay for, so you stay on Triumph and I will stay right here with my friends and you can die and work on debt till your hearts content. And before you even start to post it NO I am NOT telling you that you are not allowed on Virtue so don't even bother pulling that one little statement out and turning it around so you can claim I am telling you what to do.

Wendy, please, less words. I agree with many of your points but my eyes are bleeding.

Seriously. I can't possibly agree more.

If I was looking for an Emp Def, I'd expect that player to come to the team with the powers necessary to help the team. If all you have is HA from the Empathy Set, then don't advertise yourself as an Emp Def. Same as if you're a Rad Emission Def with only the heal aura, don't advertise yourself as a Rad Def because you're not. You're some useless gimped clown that didn't take his main powers.
