More stupid Drive-By Buffers!
Actually I think this boils down better to:
"OMG, why are there other people playing this game with me!" The whole thing is full of QQ. If you don't like buffs, suck it up people aren't mind readers and its not inherently wrong to help other people. Go street sweeping in empty zones instead of say, in Atlas or Steel. If you're REALLY concerned try joining one of the lesser populated servers and play during a lull period. The world isn't going to end because someone ruined a couple minutes of your "fun". If you can't get past that you have some serious anger/emotional issues and probably shouldn't be playing a game to begin with. I mean it would be like me throwing a hissy fit because a guy opened a door for me. Sure I can open the door myself, I may have even felt empowered by doing it on my own, but the world isn't going to end because it happened. I'll politely thank him, let him know it wasn't necessary I can do it myself and move on. The crazy person would throw a hissy fit to the guy's face about how he's ruining her life and treating her like she can't do anything for herself. Quite a few people in this thread are throwing hissy fits and being crazy over something that really just doesn't matter. And the point? You don't even get debt at level 4, worst case scenario you had to hike again to the mission door. Oh the humanity. |
Oh the sweet irony. In one breath they argue that the random acts of kindness are because they care and want to help their fellow players, then turn around and in the next breath they declare, "deal with it" because they don't care about you.
Sorry about this short rant, everyone! I HATE Drive-By-Buffers! Why do they think they have a right to Drive-By-Buff anyone without asking their permission first? Don't they even know, or care, the least little bit, that by doing Drive-By-Buffing, without asking first, is gonna make them a ton of enemies! *End Rant*
|
The problem is they dont have a fling poo power so after my snowballs run out from the winter event its all I have left to throw.
I still I recall one day in the Hollows when a 50 level walked up an gave me a million in INF (this was back before Wentworths and the IO system so that was a huge amount) and I hadn't done a thing for him. I thanked him and asked why he was tipping me... His replay was "You guys saved my butt countless times when I was here as a 5 or 6 level.. just my way of saying thanks now since I couldn't afford to then."
|
Back in the day in the Hollows, it was very tough. (And hey, Sonny, we had debt at level FIVE back then! Get off my lawn!) The Taxibots saved a lot of bacon.
I used to take my Ice/FF back to the Hollows and bubble the runners (heading to the far mountains past the Annual +7 Death Mage Convention) and putting ice slicks under the street mobs pounding on the lvl 5 rookies. I was inspired by the Taxibots.
Not as important in the Hollows today, but the Taxibots provided a vital service back then. They are what being a hero is all about.
"How do you know you are on the side of good?" a Paragon citizen asked him. "How can we even know what is 'good'?"
"The Most High has spoken, even with His own blood," Melancton replied. "Surely we know."
Oh the sweet irony. In one breath they argue that the random acts of kindness are because they care and want to help their fellow players, then turn around and in the next breath they declare, "deal with it" because they don't care about you.
|
Its a game, its not something to get that worked up over is my point. Deal with it, don't whine about things you can't change, you are after all sharing the game with several hundred or more people at any given time depending on the server.
If you need to count to 10 to stop your sudden influx rage simply because someone did it, or get worked up enough you have to have a tirade on a forum about it, you're taking the game as a whole WAY to seriously.
But lets reverse it, lets say its not kindness. Lets say its someone who jumped in and killed the guy you were working on stealing XP and Inf? Ok sure, that sucks, but no point getting worked up over it. No point raging about it or really even posting here. You won't change how some people are.
Instead ignore them and move on. People can only ruin your "fun" if you let them.
So... you're the kind of "Boy Scout" who would 'help' Grandma across the street and when she says 'I didn't want to cross, I'd just stopped to take a breather' would say "suck it up princess, I was just trying to help!"
Uhm.. ok....
Yikes.
I think we need to see if we can add aroma therapy to the forums to "chill" everyone out... with a toggle to turn that off for those with allergies or sensitive noses...
Throwing darts at the board to see if something sticks.....

More often (and note that this is virtually 100% of the time), I'm sitting at the consignment house, the tailor, the store or at the trainer, and I get a buff that expires before I can even think about getting out to a fight. Far as I'm concerned, this an irritation. I'm not going to blow a fuse and scream at the buffer, or even do anything more than maybe make a snide comment in Teamspeak or roll my eyes, but there's no point other than to show "o hai! Rule of thumb for me: If the buff is being handed out intelligently and with a reason, then there's no problem. If it's just a matter of having an itchy buffing finger and a captive audience, then it's stupid. For my part, on the few buffers I do have, I generally don't drive by buff anyone. I might pass out a rez where necessary but if I'm looking to test out my buffs, I'll find one of the buffable friendly NPCs, like the PPD walking around Kings Row.

Sartre once said, "Hell is other people." What does that make an MMO?
I find it interesting that you can boil down the whole argument to the basic concept of this: "You are wanting to force your preferred play style on me and that makes my game less enjoyable".
Funny thing, it applies to both sides of the discussion. |
Those of us who will toss off a buff to be nice will also tend to respect a "Please don't do that, I'm (trying to see what I can do/insert reason here,)" make a note and go on. I even stated earlier, I'll one star the person - not out of malice (it doesn't do jack to them, after all,) but if I see that, it's an instant "check the notes" for me.
The end result? Four minutes or less of "forced" (and I use that word VERY loosely and with no slight touch of sarcasm) gameplay for the recipient, a moment of me adding a note, and we go on our way without them getting buffed again.
The flip side, the "you're forcing me to play your way/you're playing the game for me" argument? They're saying - even as they slip in a "yeah, sure, you're trying to be nice" - that everyone who dares do that *to be nice,* or because it's what their character would do, is ruining the game for them and should absolutely stop or, in the case of a character nearly at defeat, take the time to type/remember a bind/hope the recipient decides to type instead of fight instead of making that split second decision to help.
Who's trying to force a playstyle on who? Who's being told they're *wrong* and should completely stop playing or alter their playstyle, binding (which doesn't maintain between accounts, etc.) and the like? Hell, look at the title - "More stupid drive by buffers" - I'm surprised there hasn't been MORE antagonism in this thread, quite frankly.
This is an isolated incident from years ago, and also why I love the taxibot crew. I was on a team in the Hollows back when it was first released and had just finished a mission up in the far corner. The quickest way across the zone was what we called the "Death Express". You'd run into a mob, die, rez in the Atlas Park Hospital then level up and head back to the Hollows where a teammate would tp friend you back to the next mission entrance.
Well this time there was this person level 30 something on his own that would not let me get killed. He kept hitting me with heals and ignored my requests to stop. So I told the team leader what was happening. He invited the Taxibot on duty who promptly TP'd me to the AP entrance and away from the jerk.
I have to admit we were on Freedom at the time and that might have had something to do with it.
It would be cool, but the problem comes from powers like [No Phase] and [Dampening Field] and all the PvP nerf powers that effect you while in PvP zones, those are there to hinder you on purpose, they wouldn't want to allow you to disable them to get back where you want to be.

Thank you for bringing that up because I tend to block the PvP zones out of my mind.

They assume I both want and need their "help", when often times I don't. They can tell when I do want it; I'll join a team with them. Otherwise, I don't want it, I don't need it, and I think it's terribly rude and a touch arrogant to assume that I want/need YOUR help to do whatever it is I'm doing.
I'm doing fine on my own, thanks. I want to learn to master my character by learning what I can and cannot do at each level. That means your "help" is actually in my way and makes me waste my game time while I wait for it to wear off so I can go back to what I was doing. |
Well, from my point of view, you seem to be a bit of a jerk.
I wouldn't say this, but you seem to think it is okay to call other people "terribly rude and a touch arrogant".
If I run into one of your characters and buff or heal them to try to help them, it will be a complete accident because I didn't realize it was one YOUR CHARACTERS.
By-and-large, players in this game like to help and to be helped.
You seem to be one of the exceptions to the rule.
It is a super-hero game with team-centric mechanics after-all. There appear to be plenty of games where this is not the case; you may be from one of them.
You have been unfortunate enough to find a game to play with a friendly and helpful community.
The way to avoid being buffed by other characters is to be in a mission. Other players don't have access to buffing your character while they are in a mission. So keeping inside of missions a much as possible will help eliminate others helping you.
Oh, sorry, I was trying to help you...and you didn't specifically say that you wanted any replies to your posts...
....my bad? ...
No. By posting in the forums - much like by running around in the City - you open yourself/your characters up to being helped by/exposed to other players and interaction with them.
Look, the only reason I started this thread is as follows. I was playing a Level 4 character in Galaxy City, walking a few blocks to a mission that was in a Green-Colored Area on the map, when the character was hit with Speed Boost while I was still moving, and I not only overran the Mission Door, I accidentally ended up in the middle of 3 Red Name Hellions! INSTANT DEATH! Thats why I hate Drive-By Buffing!
|
It's a bummer that you died, but know what? You were level 4. No debt. You lost some time. You have spent far more time typing out your misplaced rage here than you lost in the first place. Balance the equation and get back to playing.

Dispari has more than enough credability, and certainly doesn't need to borrow any from you.

I think it is funny that people are attacking me thinking that I oppose giving out free buffs. I don't. However, I do respect people that request that I do not buff them.
I have been guilty of SBing someone on a team after being asked not to.
I didn't do it on purpose to bug them. I just had a habit of working my way down the list every so often and buffing everyone to avoid the "SB PLZ" spam. The person that didn't want it was in the middle of the list and my fingers were faster than my brain. I don't think that makes me a griefer or an idiot, but I suppose SnowGlobe and others would disagree. |
Okay I have got to stop reading through these posts or I will never stop responding. Snow Globe you want the Devs to take the time to create an ANTI-BUFF button you can use because your PC is at the minimum and certain buffs cause YOU to crash?
|
2) ANY crashing of the game should be treated with a #1 priority. It usually means sloppy code in my experience.
3) I've been on the side of asking for a anti-buff method for years, and I don't see that ending any time soon.
4) My complaint with speed boost these days have to deal with the run speed component (it has gotten me killed too many times). I made a suggestion last summer that people should be given an optional "speed slider" to have the ability to cap their own speed to what they are comfortable with, along with the ability to enable/disable that cap.
With all the other issues they are working to maintain and fix how many people out of close to over over 100,000 subscribers does this actually help?

I don't know WHAT planner you are looking at but delete it and use what the powerset gives you to HELP your team.

Point #2: The care, feeding, and most importantly upgrading of *your* PC is *your* problem... That's even more impossible for the would-be samaritan buffer to determine from in-game... Sorry - that one doesn't fly for me.
|
My computers (even my old ones) still meet the specs for the game. If the computers were below game specs, then you might have a point. Until that time, the developers should be doing their job to eliminate any crashes they can.
This I agree with entirely.

First, I'll state that I think the option to either cancel or ignore player buffs is a good idea, and certainly would solve some issues in the game. Even the ability to better control if buffs were displayed graphically would be a nice addition.
However, I do not have any sympathy for those that would lash out at a player who had good intentions to help another player - even if their assistance was undesired. I'll honor someone's request as best as I can in game, but some of the ire that I'm seeing in this topic makes me wonder how many magnitudes greater a reaction would be to actual griefing.
[On Speed Boost]Actually, if you did it too many times I just wouldn't team with you. If you are that prone to letting your fingers go faster than your brain, you definitely have a play style that doesn't match mine.
|
In other words, when I play a buff-oriented char, I'm usually preoccupied dealing with the entire team, and my focus on a single player doesn't work. On top of that, I use keybinds for teamselect. A simple D/C and suddenly you're one of the numbers I usually would buff.
So, I find the easiest, most efficient thing to do is offer it up to the team to decide whether to buff or not. Chances are, if the rest of the team wants SB and you don't, you probably don't want to play with them because you'll always have to catch up to them.
I used to try to oblige those that didn't want buffs. Now, it's all or none, because I will make a mistake sometime in the course of a TF, and you will get buffed, and probably will yell at me.
In other words, not buffing a player isn't always as trivial as you would think it is.

Can I have your global name so that I can add a player note to never team with you? |
Have you ever tried to keep a team speedboosted on a kin thru an entire TF?

I do get annoyed if I get boosted into a group and die because someone assumes that I want it. I'll make a note on the character and if they do it too often I'll let them know.
I have found that playing characters with superspeed completely eliminates any issue of navigation you will encounter having speed boost. While you may still not like the power, taking steps to reduce the annoyance factor for you will only enhance the enjoyment you will get out of this game.
|
While I'm not the person you addressed this to, feel free to add a note to my global as well. It's the same as it is on the forums. As you may not play on Infinity server, you may not know how service oriented the Taxibots are, and how they do try to avoid hostilities. As Wendy is a Taxi, she has to abide by their rules, which includes treating other players with respect. Somehow, I doubt you'll need to add a playernote.

However when anyone tells someone else:

First off Wendy, Please please please understand that this is not directed at you personally. You just happen to be the latest person to say something along these lines and I'd like to address it.
In order to assist those people that don't want any "help" from drive-by buffs, please explain step by step how they can get this sign everyone keeps telling them to get. Can they get it at the tailor? If so explain exactly where in the costume creator it can be found. Is it a title? If so what level do you have to be to unlock it? Or do you get it from a contact? Who is this contact and where can it be found? Do you get this sign from a badge? Is it part of an accolade that has to be unlocked? Well? . . . Still waiting . . . |
The point being there is NO such sign and if I am out flying around and see your character with youre health bar in the red and facing 3 or 4 villains all still in relatively good shape .. I have NO way of knowing you are one of those few people that would rather die, go to the hospital, and LEARN A VALUABLE LESSON FROM THE EXPERIENCE. I've mentioned it several times now I have been HELPING people in game with buffs almost as long as I have played (4 years plus). I buff when I see someone in trouble that looks like they need help and unlike the nuts(?) that want to show off their new shiny buff and use it in Wentworths, at the Trainer, the Store, or Pocket D I only buff people I see on the street actually fighting villain groups. Unlike some I even take the time to see if they really need it.. why waste MY time if you are fine?
I check YOU first... How much life do you have left? How many villains are you battling? at times even what AT are you battling with? (A 30 level Blaster in Brickstown fighting eight 32 level Cery to try and get that new costume slot may need my help... a 30 level TANK fighting three of then? I doubt needs anything but more Crey)
I check WHAT you are fight.... what level are they? (Hey I see 40 levels pounding on 15 level Tsoo in Steel Canyon I seriously doubt they need me to stop what I m doing to buff them no matter how many bad guys there are) How much life do they have left and how many are left? (you are practically DEAD and there are three minion all still at full health and +1 or whatever higher than you pounding on you.. sounds like you are about to die to me).
If all that adds up to.. that guy looks like he needs a hand I drop in and give one. If a 50 level is in Skyway taking out 16 level Clockwork Bosses cause he wants his gearsmasher badge and doesn't feel like commiting to a Posi or Synapse to earn them... I have better things to do than swope down and buff him. On top of that if I did and then 30 seconds later spotted some poor 15 level half dead and facing 17 level Lost that not only are kicking his butt good but the Lost Boss has him asleep so he can't even fight.. I'd feel pretty bad if I couldn't buff him because I used them all up on that 50 and they are still recharging.
I am not your typical brain dead "Look I have a new power" Drive By Buffer .. I am a player that just happens to enjoy helping other players when it LOOKS like they need help. My point is some of the poster here seem to thing that NC Soft should devote Dev time, resources and whatever else to develop some ANTI-BUFF serum button they can push because they are annoyed. Sounds like in most cases it's occurring in places where with or without the buff its not affecting their ability to fight, live or die because they are not in a combat situation. A few other hard headed "Leave me alone I want to do it myself" types want something similar because "You buffed me now how am I ever supposed to learn what my powers can do?" Ummmmm how about finding another mob after I leave and starting over? Last I checked at no level in this game did you dramatically jump in ability after defeating 3 minions even if they happened to be enough to give you the XP to get to your next level. You get a new power at let's say level 12 and it has one whole enhancement slot you can put a 15 level IO or DO damage enhancer in to make it a little better. At the next level let's say it was an attack so you get 2 more slots and add a second damage enhancer and an accuracy enhancer. Now your power is starting to show you what it can become. Me buffing you while you fight ONE mob is not crushing your learning experience because you probably still have no real knowledge of what that power can do even at level 13. Hey I don't know how you enhance but on my scrappers, tankers and blasters at some point most if not all of my attack powers will wind up with three damage enhancers, one or two accuracy enhancers (depending on how accurate the power is to begin with) and if I have the slots a recharge enhancer or a range enhancer depending on which I need or want most. You are not getting that many slots on that power you took at level 12 even when you hit 13 so in reality you still don'y know exactly how well it can work.. have a really good idea based on what it can do then but you are still learning.
Okay so maybe I am not a typical Brive by buffer frankly my opinion is too many of you let way to many little things annoy you and ruin your game time. If any of you actually read all of my POSTs here you'll see that I agree the idiots buffing in WW and such are an annoyance. But enough to make me think we need todevote time, energy and resources to find a way players can stop the MADNESS? no! Unless you are ready to walk out the door of Wentworths how long are you going to be there? Your trying to sell salvage, IO enhancements, or recipes and get the best price... your trying to buy the same things and looking to get the lowest price. By the time you are done with all that how long is before that SB the jerk that walked by hit you with actually wears off? So becaue someone annoyed you for a minute maybe two you all want a BUTTON you can hit to prevent anyone from ever buffing you again. While we are at it can we get them to make one that turns off everyone's defense auras in Wentworth too? Hey it adds to the lag there and they aren't fighting anything why do they need those things on? BY THE WAY JUST TO CLARIFY THAT LAST STATEMENT WAS ALSO S A R C A S M!
If you are so dead set on the I can do it alone attitude do what some of the other posters here suggest. Stop fighting in the streets and get a door mission from your Police Scanner or one of your contacts and run it solo. You want to see how well your build does against higher level villains well guess what you can up the Difficult of that mission and face nothing but +4 level with bosses. If it turns out you SUCK on the way back from the hospital see the Field Rep. lower the difficult and reset the mission. Seem like a much more effective way to learn the way your powers work than running around looking for mobs in the street. Just keep doing that all the way to level 50 and you can stand proudly in front of Castle and yell in all cap in broadcast "I DID IT ALL MYSELF WITH NO HELP FROM ANYONE!" Oh at that point I suggest you retire you proud 50 and start all over since any ITF, LGTF, STF or any other team you may try to join is going to quickly realize you have no idea how to be a team player and kick you repeated.

Aww man...
See...this is why it is soo hard to be a human being. No matter what you do, someone will not like it. Even if you are going out of your way to be nice, someone will take offense to it.
This probably means we'll never stop having wars. What a species we are.
I will say I had no idea about SB causing some to DC. That's an understandable complaint.
In the case where I'm in the middle of a fight, or am about to jump into one, sure, I'll take any buffs you want to give me. I honestly can't remember the last time this has happened to me.

I flew around on my /son troller yesterday and buffed folks running around in Atlas.
You know what happened out of 10 ppl,7 ppl didn't say anything and the other 3 thanked me.Not once did I get a complaint, you know why because ppl appreciate help that's why we get on teams.
If it was in WW/BM yeah that's sorta stupid but who cares it's going to wear off.
I think there are bigger things in the world to complain about, and like Lemur said where is the question?
so a person plays an MMO with a piece of S computer & complains their little metal box of junk cannot handle speed boost...and that's everyone else's fault.
ok.
So... you're the kind of "Boy Scout" who would 'help' Grandma across the street and when she says 'I didn't want to cross, I'd just stopped to take a breather' would say "suck it up princess, I was just trying to help!"
Uhm.. ok.... Yikes. I think we need to see if we can add aroma therapy to the forums to "chill" everyone out... with a toggle to turn that off for those with allergies or sensitive noses... |
Yeah. I am an Eagle Scout.
I'm assuming "Grandma" wasn't under attack by Malta while she was standing at the street corner.
...back to the subject at hand...
If I buff someone and I get a tell from them that says something to the effect that they didn't want/need to be buffed, I would apologize for helping them. If they continued with or included some kind of insult, I'd put them on ignore. That would not stop me from helping the next character that I saw in trouble.
...in the end...
It really sound like you need to take your own advice from the end of your own post!
What you posted at the beginning is unrealistic. Not being in combat, I would have plenty of time to ask if she needed help. If for some crazed reason, I did force her to cross the street against her will - which I wouldn't - I would apologize to her....just like I would another player that I was trying to help out.
[NOTE: Last night the character -- that was going red while fighting on the street that I ice-shielded, buffed, and gave 4 respites to -- did not complain. ]
If you ask nicely not to buff you that's one thing, but this whole "you should never buff anyone because it interferes with my playstyle" thing seems more like a one-man crusade to have everyone play your way. You can't expect everyone who comes by to not buff you, and yelling at them for it is just pointless instigation.
This is why I think the most peaceful way for the devs to resolve this would be to give people the ability to choose to accept/block buffs. Then the people that don't want buffs can set their toggles and go on their merry and the good samaritans can play the way they like. Everyone's happy. There'll be no more nerdraging on the forums about "I hate SB's" or "Suck it up Princess". Every time the devs have given us the ability to block something in game the number of complaints drop to almost zero.
I rarely see arguments anymore about blind invites, PL/Farm spam, RMT spam since we got the ability to
