Official Anime Recommendation Thread

I'm saddened by the lack of...

Read or Die (Action/Drama) - Think of James Bond, crossed with X-Men, crossed with your local library service. Highly unusual anime with great action. The 3 episode OVA is best, and pretty much required to fully understand the TV series which focuses on a different set of characters.
Warning, this anime is not a hentai but the following videos contain some suggestive nudity and are probably not work safe
"Read or Die" OVA intro - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WH0zsABQiaQ
"R.O.D. The TV" intro - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fqmq-WiSKI0

Haibane Renmei (Drama) - Slow, thoughtful and spiritual anime about a group of girls with grey wings and halos... Next to no action or explosions, and quite slow paced until about ep 6/7, but an excellent, emotional story. Created by Yoshitoshi ABe, character designer of Serial Experiments Lain, Texhnolyze, Welcome to the N.H.K.
This isn't for everyone, but those who it is for will love it forever.
Unfortunately it seems it's quite hard to find Stateside these days though.
This video is also probably NWS for shot of a naked character, but you'd be hard pressed to find a less-exploitative anime IMO
"Haibane Renmei" intro - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wApAEg0ErgE

I'll also lend my support to...
Cowboy Bebop +1 (stylish, awesome music, great action and great stories)
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya +1 (not the smartest anime I've ever seen, but definitely the most sly. Takes anime tropes and ruthlessly deconstructs them into something very interesting. Watch it in it's original non-chronological broadcast order for best effect. Don't bother with season 2 unless you're a HUGE fan - if you are not a HUGE fan season 2 may cause you to not be a fan at all)
Death Note +1 (a plot that twists like a pretzel with some of the greatest surprises possible, and fantastic characters)
Excel Saga +1 (utterly madcap screwball comedy that never fails to surprise)
Princess Tutu +1 (beautifully animated, surprisingly dark and utterly unique mash up of magical girl, ballet, Wagner and the brothers Grimm...)
Fullmetal Alchemist +1 (strong characters, cool powers, dark drama, sickening events, crapsack world...)
Everything by Studio Ghibli +1 (nuff said)

"The Hamidon is a what what of what?" - Brian the mission guy.

These should be included in any Anime list.

You're not serious are you? You might as well throw in Doomed Megalopolis, if you want to see a ***** tentacle monster come OUT through a woman's mouth. *shudders*

This is already pretty comprehensive, but I'll add my +1s...

Gundam Wing (+1)
Vandread (+1)
Tenchi Muyo (+1) - However, it must be said: Tenchi in Tokyo (-1). If I could rate it lower, I would...don't even bother with it.
Last Exile (+1)
MS Gundam 08th MS team (+1)
Bubblegum Crisis (+1)
Cowboy Bebop (+1)
Macross Plus (+1)
Slayers (+1) - I recommend the first TV series and Slayers TRY (The 3rd series). Slayers Next meanders too much IMO, and isn't really necessary for enjoying TRY.
Martian Successor Nadesico (+1)
Neon Genesis Evangelion (+1)
Macross (+1) - Robotech if you're desparate, since it's a watered-down version of Macross anyway.
Naruto (+1)
Trigun (+1)
Ah My Goddess (+1)
Elfin Lied (+1)

Dragonball Z (-1)
Berserk (-1)

"I may," he said with a grin that would have sent sane men scampering for the trees, "have been imagining it."

Now that I'm awake and not tired from work, I remembered a couple.

Moribito - Guardian of the Spirit -- action/drama (currently on A.S and will have the final volumes released for sale by years end, barring any date changes)

D. Gray-man -- action/comedy/some drama (season 2 part one just hit the shelves and I'm hoping Funimation picks up Seasons 3 & 4 to finish the series off)

There are quite a few things there that I'll be watching this season (Natsu no Arashi 2, Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu) and things I've enjoyed in this past season (Sora no Otoshimono).

There are too many good shows that will never make it to the US or be horribly subbed and edited to pieces if they make it. I'm glad Crunchyroll is providing an opportunity to see things before the excessively expensive DVD's come out.
If Crunchyroll still allows users to upload stuff (I don't know, I've never used it), and it still has unlicensed stuff there, then it doesn't belong here. Since people would have a tougher time knowing whether or not something is licensed, I'd rather err on the side of caution.

Code Geass should be on there as well.

And Moribito Guardian of Spirit is outstanding.

Thirdly, try and limit suggestions to one primary genre. If I tried categorizing them by every permutation, there probably wouldn't be more than one in that genre.

Just some things I thought of.
xxxHolic, Ghost in the Shell, Full Metal Alchemist.

Those are the only ones I can think of right now.

Err, when I said, "Limit to one primary genre", I meant classify your suggestions as "action" or "comedy" rather than "mecha/comedy/romance" or something like that. Didn't mean to say that only suggest one genre.

Also, please try to include the genre if you are making a new suggestion for addition.

Thanks.

Wait a second. I can't believe I forgot to add a +1 to Escaflowne earlier. Bah.

couple of favs from me:

Burst Angel - I love Jo, she's so cool
Gunslinger Girls - Was a nice and sad story and i weeped at the end.
Sky Girls - Overall liked it, little girls trying hard to help others.
Black Lagoon - Spoke to my dark side, Revy is badass and i liked the setting of it.
Gunsmith Cats - Just a three episode series, but it was really nice and very much inline with the manga.
Shining Tears X wind - Mao! Mao! Mao!
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann - Yoko, sexy busy girl with a gun about twice her size... whats not to like?
Outlaw Star - Aisha!
Kiddy Grade - Loved the main chars how they offset each other. And i'm a sucker for kick-*** girls
Mew Mew Power (Mew Mew Tokyo) - So so adorable cute with silly long transformation sequeces... Mew Mew Style, Mew Mew Grace, Mew Mew Power in your FACE!

And a hate object of mine.
Neon Genesis Evangelion - how can anyone like this piece of ****? O.o, it's just a bunch of emo. Woe is me for having to save the world, boo hoo. The first two-three episodes were ok, but then it turned to ****. One episode was just the same picture over and over and some "oooh noes what should i do, boohoo woe is me dialgoue" wth?

No love for Gaint Robo despite the title I think it the closest thing I've seen to Japanese Western Superheroes..

Evil group of villans Big Fire have a plant to take over the world and it up the Experts of Justice to stop them. Epic stuff.

and I just finished watching the first season of Aqua, it a slice of life show about a girl that moves to Mars, now called Aqua due it been terraformed and now it covered in water. to become a Unidne someone how drives a Gondola for toursits around. Very much a slice of life show, with a slight sci-fi twist. Great art and a great soundtrack.

. Gaogaigar, mecha show. Courage and guts will win the day! Crazy epic stuff like only the Japanese can do

and Black Lagoon. Over the top action show that takes a few anime cliches and turns them on there heads. Very violent. but good.

That all I can think of right now.

"And for us this is the end of all stories, and we can mostly say they lived happily ever after. But for them it was the beginning of the real story. All there life in this world and all there adventures in Narnia had only be the cover and the title page: now at last they were beginning Chapter One of The Great Story which no one on earth has ever read: which goes on forever: in which every chapter is better than the one before" - C.S Lewis, The Last Battle.

It doesn't allow users to upload stuff anymore, so it's fine here.

It no longer allows video uploads and everything there is now licensed. The old video and fansubs are gone. It's definitely not the site that it used to be. For better or worse, it even locks people out depending on their region. There's no longer need for caution. It's all quite legally distributed.

So go check it out. And check out Aoi Hana while you're there, a touching yuri romance.

I second this. It's hard to describe how epic it is to anyone who hasn't seen it.

I'd recommend Magical Girl Pretty Sammy/Magical Project S to anyone who likes Tenchi, Magical Girls, or Comedy. It has quiet a bit of variety of jokes in it, they even have an episode poking fun at the Power Rangers.

I get exactly where you are coming from, and I typically don't go for the standard tentacle-sex stuff myself (Ok, I put Wicked City on my list too, but to be fair, the movie rocked.), But Urotsukidōji was just plain slick. Looking beyond that aspect, it was one of the most spooky and disturbing stories I have seen in Anime to date.

But for the OP...

Comedy
  • Cutey Honey
  • Project A-ko
Mecha

  • Robotech
Acton and/or Drama
  • Akira
  • Fist of the North Star
  • Ninja Scroll
  • Vampire Hunter D
  • New Dominion: Tank Police
  • Rojin Z
  • Devil Man/Lady
  • Grave of the Fireflies
  • Voices from a Distant Star
  • Street Fighter: The Animated Movie
  • 8 Man
  • Blue Seed
Horror
  • or Urotsukidōji
  • Wicked City

MY FAREWELL GIFT

It is never truly gone, as long as there is someone left to remember.

I would like to recommend

Dual : Paralel Trouble Adventure!

Its...a Harem Giant Mecha Anime.

Kinda...Evangeleon having Kids with Tenchi.

For those who are into the Mecha Genre, I found After War Gundam X to be the most entertaining series to watch. The series is very...realistic, for lack of a better word. Suits take damage, regardless of the armor. Characters are well developed and followable. All in all, it seems very believable.

I had just spent a half hour updating this...and the thing lost it. And I was on the last damn post too.

Another thing I thought of...no porn. Wicked City/Urotsukidoji, that's porn in my book. Non-negotiable on this point.

If we are talking gundam...we gotta mention Victory Gundam just once.
