It's a classic.
Ghost in the shell has a rating of (0) Are we nuts? +5 everything that is ghost in the shell. Amazing writing, incredible music composition, great story, beautifully detailed artwork both in movies and series. |
I'm the creator of the list. I just haven't gotten around to updating it, because I'm a procrastinator. But it will get done. FotNS wasn't on it because it's not on my shelves. The original list was compiled mostly from the stuff I have seen on tv and/or own.
There will be no H-titles. Don't bring them up. There is no place for those here. Words to that effect were spoken by Castle. Don't argue it. Don't care if they are 'classics'. Just accept it.
Well the thing is that it's not outright H. Think of it like a disaster movie that has a sex scene for some reason. It's there, but that's hardly the point of it. I know of a few visual novel games that kind of suffer the same fate(/stay night).
|
Don't make me tap it again.
This is Castle's exact message to me:
Hentai and related material should NOT be on our forums, so you made the correct choice in my opinion. |
Did Lupin the 3rd ever make the list? TV series & movies.
Other than that, put some +1's next to:
- Azumanga Daioh
Melancholy of Harumi Suzukiya
Genshiken
Gundam UC (movies I-III)
Gundam 0083 Stardust Memories
Gundam Wing
Craft your inventions in AE!!
Play "Crafter's Cafe" - Arc #487283. A 1 mission, NON-COMBAT AE arc with workable invention tables!
I haven't seen the movie in a long time. But Fist of the North Star (+)
Trigun (+)
MS Gundam (+)
Gundam 8th MS Team (+)
Gundam Wing (+)
It's a classic.

While I love watching Ghost in the Shell: SAC.
The original GitS movie bored me. I bought it when it first came out, yeah, that far back, and I've yet to ever finish as it always puts me to sleep.

Ok, updates...
I've spent about 4-5 hours working on them offline. There were, so far, about 42 pages of printouts (done through 10/24) of stuff to go through - it's easier than tabbing back and forth between programs/windows. There's more printing though. I've made the +/-'s to the list on paper, but I need to type it up and get it on here. That'll probably happen tomorrow, as I'm starting to get a headache from going through it.
>.<
Wish there was an easier way.
I know there are some online services that let multiple people edit documents. Like Google Docs. But some one could screw it up, and this is more secure.
*Eyes the suggested watch list. Sees naruto, Neon Genesis, Death Note, Trigun, Read or die, Outlaw star... stops reading list. Cries for humanity. *

I can't speak for the RoD tv series, but I thought the OVA was great and Trigun/Outlaw Star are classic.
Death Note started off good...then trailed off somewhere and I didn't care for it much after a certain point...it probably could of redeemed itself if the ending was different.
Naruto has been good for a while as far as the manga is concerned.
Not sure what to think about NGE anymore.

Once I've got the update done, if people could go through and check the placement into genres (action, comedy, etc) and maybe make some suggestions for what to move them around (if at all), I'd appreciate it. There's quite a few that I have no idea what to list them as. I think I'm going to have to split up Action & Drama.
And if there's ones that fall into that 'adult' category that shouldn't be here that I might've missed.
that is not the edit you're looking for
I disagree with this statement.

I disliked the original appleseed, however it is a classic anime. I don't feel Naruto, Bleach or Death Note should be on the list because I personally don't consider these Anime as much as I do pop-culture smutt. They are franchises produced as quickly as possible to make as much profit as possible. They don't have any real semblance of plot (past maybe the first few episodes).
An example of this is the comparision between Dragon Ball and DBZ. One is a great anime series that any anime fan should watch..the other is just a sad attempt at milking a story.

I prefer to like what I like. Not what a magazine tells me to like...
And yet, magazines don't neglect Bleach or Death Note. Interesting dichotomy there...

Ghost in the SHell (+1) SAC (+1)
Naruto (-100) too much filler, bad story.
Bleach (-100) for becoming DBZ
Death Note (-1) Couldn't stay on stoy track, killed off L.
Elfen Lied (-1) Wanted to be Akira so bad it failed, Failed miserably. I don't feel sorry for a naked female serial killer, don't try to make me.
You can disagree all you like, Ghost in the Shell the original movie is on many top anime lists across the web and many Anime Magazines. Check for yourself. That's what I go by, not necessarily personal taste (although I can't rule out personal bias either.)

P.S. Elfen Lied wasn't great, but at least it didn't follow through with the source material. The point in the manga that they chose for the anime ending was the climax, before it really bottomed out. Seriously, there was a character that wore diapers because she peed herself when nervous. She served no purpose but to add to Kouta's harem and fetishistic fan-service.
Never said personal taste shouldn't be considered. But do you really consider Bleach And Death Note past the first few episodes or first season as having coherent and engaging plots, stories? I agree death note was great up until the death of L.. but then they just seemed to lose track of the plot and began milking the story. Bleach quickly became DBZ and naruto..well, I never cared for naruto but that's just personal preference...too much filler for my taste.

Just because you don't like something, doesn't mean others can't (or shouldn't) like it. I don't like A Miracle on 34th Street or Citizen Kane nor do I consider them the greatest gifts to mankind, but that doesn't mean I can't recognize and accept others personal opinions about those movies.
But honestly? To me, you're coming off as an anime snob. Not measurably different than those guys that walk around in berets decrying movies like Superbad or <insert popular movie name here> while trumpeting the wonders of incomprehensible arthouse movies that like to think they are 'deep'.
Verbal Kint is Kayser Sose
Darth Vader is Luke's Father
The guy in Memento killed his own wife
Tyler Durden is his other personality
The aliens are allergic to water
It's people
It's plants
Man is the most dangerous game
There, I've covered most of it, so let's stop with the spoilers now, shall we?
Naruto has a plot, it just got severely interrupted by filler in the anime. Same with DBZ - Dragon Ball Kai is a much better take. Death Note had a coherent plot after the Event, but I stopped caring about said plot at that point.
Not that having a coherent plot is a hallmark of anime.
And if you really want to talk about an anime milking a story, talk about Wolf's Rain. I was rather enjoying that anime and then it became several episodes of flashbacks retelling the whole darn thing. It was like an episodic clip show.
Goodbye may seem forever
Farewell is like the end
But in my heart's the memory
And there you'll always be

Oh. I wasn't saying GitS: Original Movie, isn't considered a classic. Just that, I would disagree that it's good.
But like I've said, it kept boring me to sleep. Starts out good...and then somewhere in the middle, I'm all...Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
As for such anime's as Naruto. Depends.
I've enjoyed watching every episode of Naruto that went along with the manga. When they did filler episodes, I found those pretty boring for the vast majority of them.

Because I forgot to list it in my original recommendations:
Appleseed (+1)
It seems like you have a distaste for "wheel-spinners", the wheels are spinning but the plot goes nowhere. From what I have seen it's a description that fits Bleach, Naruto, and DBZ pretty well. Death Note does have a plot, albeit a bit slow; it just happens to take an incredibly bad turn in the second half. At some point I think it got caught up in trying to outdo its own twists and failed pretty hard.

Because I forgot to list it in my original recommendations:
Appleseed (+1) You just convinced me to take Death Note off my Amazon Wish List. I have a distaste for any kind of drama with glacial pacing (and "wheel-spinners" sound like my personal version of hell). |
Death Note, up to episode 25, is pretty good (if a bit boring though, as I previously said - it's just not my cuppa, but I can recognize that it's 'good'). You don't need to watch anything after that.

Thing is I wouldn't call myself an anime fan anymore than I'd call myself a live-action drama fan or a printed text fan - I just love well-told stories and interesting characters, whatever media form or genre I experience them in and sci-fi anime is one of the sources I have drawn such entertainment from in the past (albeit one I'm not really immersed in enough to seek my own new material, hence seeking recommendations).
Going back to the remaining titles on my wishlist - Trigun, Code Geass, Neon Genesis Evangelion and Mobile Suit Gundam 00 - and I do like mecha so I'm leaning towards one of the latter 3 as my next purchase - are there any of those I should be wary of where the quality drops off suddenly at some point during their run? I've heard that NGE has a slightly... odd... ending, but I've been wary of trying to nail down if that's personal opinion from some reviewers or a commonly held qualitative judgement (mainly because I didn't want to hear any spoilers). And it probably bears repeating that my own personal benchmark for anime excellence is Ghost in the Shell: SAC - not expecting anything to surpass that tbh, but getting close in quality of storytelling/characterisation and themes would be nice.
Do you mean a consistent drop off or just a 'bad' episode or two?
Code Geass has some WTF and eyebrow raising moments, but it is quite masterful, IMO. Oh, be aware. There is a touch of nudity in it (just a couple of scenes iirc, nothing too bad as it was still aired on [as], but blurred).
NGE...watch it while drunk. To me, it's drunk logic. It'll make more sense.
Edit - Oh, you may want to pick up Trigun sooner rather than later. I think but am not sure though, that it's now out of print. I'm having a hella time finding discs of Kimagure Orange Road (not the same series, I know, but it too is OOP). One has been going for $80!
Also, I've only seen one mention of 5 Centimeters per Second, which in my opinion was a superior piece to the creator's prior work, Voices of a Distant Star. Voices had the interesting time/relativity thing going on, but I found 5 cm per Second to be much more emotionally resonant as well as beautiful crafted. The animation is excellent, and the backgrounds are detailed and breathtaking.
