I Deleted my MA Babies
Riiiiight, because I'm HELPLESS with just my SOs slotted.
Oh wait... |
NOTE: I don't care if people PL and farm unless the farming/PLing causes changes to the game that might not have been done otherwise.
|
So farming actually made a positive change and people should be grateful for it.

I'm am really happy about my "MA Babies". Without it, I would never have lvl'd a few different toons unless I forced myself to play them through the really boring early lvl's. I would have never lvl'd a tank by myself and the bad thing is now that he is lvl50 from MA I actually play him.
This doesn't have anything to do with MA but still relevant. I still PL toons of mine, when I farm, to somewhere in the 20's. I PL'd a mind/therm troller to 25 a few days ago and now it's 32 and I really enjoy playing it. I've come to loath the lower lvl's these days so skipping to powers I enjoy make me want to play the character even more. YMMV

This has got to be the stupidest thing i have read on the forums in a long time. That being the OPer btw. I am not discounting anything that she says. I can totally understand the idea of having charactes, even level 50s that you have no connection to.
But if you have level slots availible i see no reason in deleting perfectly good characters simply because you PLed them up to a fun level in the game. You can buy enhancments, You can make a new costume, you can unlock a cape. Heck you can even by a rename token.
I commonly skip the low levels of the game. I have absolutely no pride in being able to squeeze out level 1-20 anyone can do it. Its not rocket science. Deleting them simply isjust being dumb. A mid 30s character still has plenty of play left in them. And plenty of time to gain pride in it.

I play a lot of different characters and most of them have been PL'ed to some extent at some point in their 'lives'. If they're fun, I keep playing them. If they aren't fun, I delete them.
There's no moral component to efficient leveling any more than there's a moral component to how fast you read a trashy novel- if you want to skim the boring parts, who cares? You're the one reading the book. Nobody's grading your performance. That said, if you prefer to pour over every word more power to you. Play the game you enjoy. |
But as you said, to each their own.

I happily PLed two of my Brutes up to mid-20s with the MA, my Dark/WP and my Stone/Fire.
I don't find Brutes much fun pre-20 (actually I lie, my Claws/Elec has been fun, but a lot of that is down to the new Diff settings). My Stone/Fire brute was insanely painful in his teens, even fully slotted up for End Reduction. Soloing PL friendly MA missions stopped him being wiped / ignored before I could sort him out with Consume, Stamina and SOs.
Plus with all the Tickets -> Salvage -> Black Market transactions I was easily able to SO both out and get a few nice Bronze Rolls too.
I'm not opposed to this sort of mentallity, but I just really don't get it. If a novel is trashy and has boring parts, I simply don't read it ... |

I'm not sure I understand there being no pride in leveling up 1-20, but pride in a mid-30s character that is just as easy or hard to play.

...what exactly is so stupid about deleting characters? You can make new ones.
|
The poster IMO sounded like he/she was basicly saying that he/she was deleting the characters to basicly re-role some of them so they could be played legit throught he whole game. I find that stupid. I know that means i guess in retrospect of reading it. But I guess with my play likes/dislikes, i would commonly level a toon by "alternate" means up to atleast 22 or so anyway. I still find i have plenty of time to get to know the character, make a connection with playing it, earn my badges, earn my cape, aura, do STs etc. And with SSK and earning xp on exempt, its not like she couldnt go back and do anything she really felt she missed, and do it with 5 extra levels of powers.
Like i said i can respect its her toons to do what she wants, i personally, just find that even if i just dont like a character i dont delete it if i have room to role new toons. You never know. Just think how many people say they deleted dominators int he mid 20s-30s because they didnt like the damage and stuff, only to have those issues fixed and have to start over after issues were fix with domination changes.
I'm not opposed to this sort of mentallity, but I just really don't get it. If a novel is trashy and has boring parts, I simply don't read it ...

Several fine novelists wrote their greatest works serially & on deadline- Hugo, Dumas & Dickens come to mind.
This led to some unavoidable filler in even their finest novels, pages or even chapters you could safely skip without harming your enjoyment of the work as a whole. Dickens seemed especially prone to this, devoting dozens of pages to detailed descriptions of arcane Victorian processes with tangential relevance to the main story.
Even great works can include boring, irrelevant sections.
Skipping over the crummy bits is greatly preferable to ignoring the whole book.

But that's just me. Awaiting my negative rep (you know someone will).

To the OP, kudos to you for doing what you feel was necessary. If you didn't enjoy the toon, good that you deleted it, make something that you might enjoy. You may level another toon up the 'right' way to the 30s and find you don't like it, and do the same. Don't let anyone else tell you you're wrong for doing so.
Personally, I'm a bit OCD, even if I hate a toon, I won't delete one if I feel no connection to it...
If you don't enjoy the game from level 1 up, then you're either doing something wrong, or you need to go play another game for a while because you're burnt out.
But that's just one man's opinion. |
I was replying to this:
... which since farming became so popular most likely because it was giving normal drops rates that maybe those who do care won't be using 'abberant behaviour' to get the drops they want. So farming actually made a positive change and people should be grateful for it. |
Farming has actually found a bug, that has affected the entire player base for 7 issues. While it may not have affected everyone equally until recently, some people have always sworn by 'bad luck' that they never got good drops at all, regardless of their play style, when in fact it was a bug causing that bad luck. Thanks to the farmers (myself included), may those people get many Purples in their adventures.
CHAMPION!
NOOO! Don't skip those sections!! Now that time has passed, such sections of books are great historical documents about aspects of life in the times they were written! For instance, when Melville wrote Moby Dick, the number of books that documented the whaling trade could be counted on one hand. I really liked the whaling stuff in Moby Dick and even the sections about Parisian architecture in The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Any time I run across history-filler material like this (provided that it doesn't overlap with an area of personal interest), I mark it so I'll know what to avoid if I ever pick the book up again. Going back to Moby Dick, a particularly vile offender, I don't care at all about the whaling industry. I care about Captain Ahab clomping around on deck being crazy. There is a great story in that book, and it's nearly smothered in effluvia.
"Everything was coated hip-deep in entrails and fat, which apparently we could sell for sufficient profit to justify such an unholy rancid mess. The odour was such that I came to yearn for each upwelling of vomit, indeed to welcome it like an old friend, as it would sweeten my nostrils by comparison. And then the captain came outside and started raving and threatening people and being generally more interesting than this heap of putrefying guts we were forced to live with, so enough of that. Hooray!"
There you go. I just saved you from like 30% of the book.
In a similar style, use "And we caught a bunch of of different kinds of fish. The Canadian guy and I were able to figure out what they all were, because I knew all this marine biology stuff and he knew all this fisherman stuff. It was pretty intense." liberally throughout 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
I'm... not really sure what this has to do with the official topic at this point. Err. Carry on.

In all my years playing MMOs, PLing has always been a pretty negative thing. Why? Because it breeds idiots to put frankly. The reason this is true is because in most PLing situations you aren't directly playing your character. You're either paying a third party real money (which is a very stupid thing all on its own), or in the sense of CoX you're paying someone else inf to let you sit in their farms.
Why does it breed idiots? Because you don't gain any experience with your class/AT during this process and after it's done you're left with a max level character dumped in your lap that you have no idea how to play effectively. You may say "nobody new to the game would get their first few characters PLed", but you'd be underestimating people's laziness and impatience. You might also say "well CoX is an easy game", which is true. Compared to other MMOs it's pretty lax in difficulty, but there's still certain things a player can do that lets you know they have no idea what they're doing. I.e. a stormy who likes to jump into the middle of every single spawn with Hurricane toggled...
Now, if you know this game inside and out and have it imprinted on the inside of your skull you can probably PL your characters no problem, but generally speaking PLing has always been a bad thing in my eyes.

I have an interest in medieval Paris, so I ate up the architectural sidebars in Hunchback. But I did skip the technical whaling stuff in Moby Dick- don't hate me, Herman! =P

I don't 'get' PLing. I really enjoy the early levels on a new character, especially if they have powerset(s) that are new to me. Sure, the enemies are the same, but discovering new ways to smack them around is always fun.
I admit 16 to 22 can be hard going - when the pre-SO end crunch hits hardest, and isn't made any easier by my refusal to build toward getting stamina at 20 if there are more fun powers to take (and there always are) - but that only adds to the satisfaction later on when the character becomes a lot more powerful.

I don't always PL up the ladder- right now I have a stalker and a blaster I've been leveling 'the old fashioned way' (which is why the shocking inferiority of the hero content is fresh in my memory).
But I like to play a LOT of alts, and at a certain point the early level slog becomes an irritation I'm happy to bypass.

lvl 15-20ish Blueside. When the Hollows has run out (I still love the Hollows) and the pre-stamina, pre-IO is REALLY biting.
20+ is the good times. I really do hate the low level endurance slog. Maybe it's just me.
GG, I would tell you that "I am killing you with my mind", but I couldn't find an emoticon to properly express my sentiment.

Good story. MA was good for trying out entire sets of different AT's. As a noobie I enjoyed it a lot, and it helped me create my now favorite character to play. lol, I have a dark bot MM that was basically raised on a Mito farm. He's awesome though and I use him all the time.
AE baby is a subjective term. Personally, my definition of a AE baby isn't a toon that gets pl'd with AE farms. Its someone that has a high level toon but has no idea how to use it or how to play the game. Example: a lvl 30 warshade that doesnt know how to get to Croatoa.
I wouldn't categorize someone that's been playing the game for 4 years and pl's toons as a AE baby. Its the people that have been playing the game for a month that have 6 level 50s and spent 90% of their game time sitting in atlas or cap looking for a AE farm.
I understand where the OP is coming from, but I wouldn't label him as a AE baby just because of a few pl'd alts.
Every time I see ths subject line for this thread my eyes skip over the my so it reads "I Deleted MA Babies" Which is bad enough.
Except, tonight, I read " I Detest MA Babies!"
I think I need more sleep.
There I was between a rock and a hard place. Then I thought, "What am I doing on this side of the rock?"
This. Just like in school, when you "cheat", you're only really cheating yourself. And I think you just discovered that. I wish more people would realize this and realize that the point of the game is to have fun PLAYING the game, rather than working to some point in the future when you "will" be able to "finally have fun".
If you don't enjoy the game from level 1 up, then you're either doing something wrong, or you need to go play another game for a while because you're burnt out. But that's just one man's opinion. |
I still play because I just love teaming. I'm glad that I CAN solo if I have too, but it's never my first choice.
I just love seeing the different combinations of play that come about, the interactions between all the new characters.
I have a fantastic time, still, playing even the Very Early levels. I had NO MA Babies. I have two characters that I hung out with friends on or played on other teams. One was already level 50, just wanted tickets to tget the badges and unlock options in MA, and the other I turned XP off for.
My memory's not as sharp as it used to be.
Also, my memory's not as sharp as it used to be.
