"AE" is shorthand for Architect Entertainment, which is a system designed to proliferate player-crafted story content amongst the live servers. Its intent and function is to permit the regular player to add to the available storylines for all players by writing up missions, new enemies, allies, and a bunch of other facets using the Architect editor, found either in the AE buildings across the various hero/villain zones, or by a "work tablet" accolade power that you can get after nabbing a few badges.
The debate centers around the fact that "farmer culture" has been using AE to optimize their XP/drop returns, primarily in Atlas Park and Cap au Diable's AE buildings. Some posit that AE itself is ruining the "City" experience. Others have stated that the behavior isn't new, and has just been transported from previous "farm" zones (Peregrine Island, Grandville) to these new AE areas.
(As I'm writing this, it kinda dawns on me that people are noticing this behavior more because AP and Cap are low-level transit hubs, as opposed to PI/GV, which were very much "high level" player hubs.)
Yes, you can form teams and do missions in AE - that's its biggest draw, the fact that you can go from 1 to 50 with pure player-created storylines if you wanted to. There are plenty of terrific writers out there who've put out some truly creative story arcs for other heroes/villains to enjoy. There are also a metric ton of "not quite so terrific" story arcs out there, plus arcs meant to optimize merit drop/XP farming, etc. Your search utility in AE allows you to navigate and read previews of each of these arcs, as well as search by popularity, vote count, by author name, etc.
Have fun in COH, gabriel, and if you need something on Freedom, feel free to shout out in our forum or on our global channels! Cheers!

The argument against AE for new players is that it ends up "bubble boying" the new player, limiting their experience within the game world. Anything from not knowing how to travel between zones, leaning to fight against a broad range of critters, becoming acclimated to new powers and learning to slot them effectively, learning to use the standard contact tree for missions, not realizing the game doesn't just exist in one building, etc.
Anecdotal tales have been told of new players who finally stick their heads out of AE and discovering that most enemies aren't like the ones they fought over and over again to get to 50. The few tactics they learned in AE don't work well in the general game, especially on certain task/strike forces.

Much as I generally hate having the star due to ADD players who can't wait a minute for me to find other people, this should make it easier to give it a go again.

/macro LF "say, Looking for more...$$emote Binoculars"
I find that while the binocs are out, players are much less likely to get antsy, as they know you are working to make the mission more fun/rewarding.
If they see you just standing there while you're looking - they don't know if you're AFK, chatting with friends, picking your nose, whatever.
Oh and I wanted to add to my post above, about Forming and Leading teams:
That when Leading, I *always, always, always* say Goodbye and Thanks to any player leaving the team (except those leaving in the middle of the mish - I have very little patience for that).
But even those that leave in the middle of a mish may have a good reason for doing so. And if they've been with the team for a while, and have been good teammates, consider offering to Kick them, to save them the run back out to the mish door (a Kicked teammate is automatically taken off the mish map).
Don't forget with the whole ability to solo missions by yourself while set to 8 people will probably make it that much easier to find teams! Cuz purple farmers need seven other people to...
nevermind.
i feel the OPs pain also. i have a lvl50 tank on virtue that i had to solo for probably 40 of those lvls because i couldn't get anyone to team with a tank.AE is the devil, dont even know where the bldgs are at and dont care to step foot in one. i like reg content but hate the whole idea of AE.so i will never join an AE mish. i will do reg content but on all the servers i play on (inf, virt, pinnacle)ive been on 1 team since before laborday weekend. cant find one and dont want to spend hours trying to put one together, because thats not fun either. the people that say they can find teams easy, i dont want to call them liars but i cant believe what they say either.so that leaves me here complaining that AE is the problem but when they nerf the xps i might see some more teaming. we can only hope!
Sorry, but I'm done waiting and soloing. I already purchased a lifetime subscription to Champions Online. Just a few more weeks, and I'll be able to play with others again.

In CO it's almost impossible to get players to team, and the interface for selecting/locating missions when on a team is incredibly annoying. Going to CO because you're unhappy with the current state of teaming on CoX is like moving to Antarctica because you were unhappy with how cold the winters in Minnesota were. In CO you're even more reliant on establishing a friends list to find anyone to team with...
That said, i'm going to wait a few more months until the Dev team is done smacking themselves and the players in the face with unannounced game-breaking (well, character build breaking) changes and then give it a shot. By then they might have upgraded the team interface to be almost as good as the interface at CoH launch. Not that i'm going to give up CoX when i give CO a try.
Dr. Todt's theme.
i make stuff...

Where to find me after the end:
The Secret World - Arcadia - Shinzo
Rift - Faeblight - Bloodspeaker
LotRO - Gladden - Aranelion
STO - Holodeck - @Captain_Thiraas
Obviously, I don't care about NCSoft's forum rules, now.
I've played CoX for going on two years now. And never before have I had this problem: I can't find any teams. Just today I logged on my brute hoping to get in some missions for a while, only to find out no one in Cap au Diable wanted a level 17 brute on their team.
Why? They're all in AE, getting their powerleveling on, and didn't want to bother with a measly level 17 anything! I can't play this game solo anymore, it's just so gosh darned B O R I N G. AE is ruining this game for the people who want to team with fellow players. Is there a solution to my problem? |
actually i have to agree, but i think its a combination of multiple things, A) Champions is out, and DCUO is coming out soon, which means the general crowd that CoX attracted is moving away from the game, lessening the amount of people that play per day, honestly the overall population is the lowest i have EVER seen! i now can only play on the Freedom server, because all others seem almost barren, its ridiculous, plus it is partially AE's fault, some people play to play and not play to have fun, normal average teams i find most exciting, the hard stuff and the easy stuff, but nowadays with pickings soo slim i can understand y someone would want the whole "perma-PL" thing going on
I must be doing something wrong, I'm on teams every night.
Last night was Victory, night before was Justice, and the night before that Protector.
Gotta agree with Red. I just logged, and I was on 3 great teams this morning (on Virtue). Good, reg content mission teams. After I finished with one, I went to WW to sell, and got another invite. Lather, rinse, repeat.
Hmm...might have something to do with the fact that I set my LFT flag to 'looking for any'...
well virtue is the second largest, and dont know bout Victory, but what lvls? because lvls 20-40 seem to experience the largest team loss, not 100% sure though, all i know is that the CoX population has decreased since the last year and NO ONE can doubt that, i blame CO, but im not sure what the real cause is.
Remove the unique name requirement, cut the amount of servers in half.
I play on a low pop server, LIberty, I wouldnt mind changing at all.
I know some have deep feelings of pride over the server they play on but if the times call for it, make the change.... the multi instance or what CO has is not the answer... I want to know where my friends are without having to guess.
No one goes there anymore, it's too crowded...

That said, I'm surprised one *other* thing hasn't been mentioned as far as building a list of folks to play with - invasions. Both zombie and Rikti. Teams get thrown together *fast* during those, with people from multiple levels,
Now, yes, the teams *tend* to be from a range of levels - from someone just setting foot in whatever zone it is to the 50 that was at the tailor/WWs/etc. But watch and see if someone's doing a good job leading. See if someone's playing well, or playing like an idiot. Who's a team player and who's not - then *add them to your friends list,* talk to them and ask about regular teams on occasion. Not in a supergroup? Ask how theirs is.
Add to the *normal* friends list first - don't just jump immediately to global. (Unless you ask - and don't be offended if the answer's "No," since some people prefer to keep the global list trimmed - or it's already long - and won't want to add someone new 'til they've played with them a while.)
Other than that, yes, use your SG, your server's channels and more.
this is an utter lie. my home server is infinity and i have absolutely no problem finding teams when i want. in fact the people that i know on virtue and pinnacle all say the same thing i do. they have no problem. use your friends list, your server chat channels, broadcast, /ac chat, send some tells from the search window, use the server section of the forums to get something going... but do NOT be lazy. and make sure your are not hiding from anything by typing /unide in the chat box. these are just a few of the simple things that will help you find teams more easily.

this is no lie and you dont even know me and your calling me a liar. i could say the same for your quote. i finaly got on a team today (sat)on infinity and it took 30 mins to start we had 4 on team and 2 padders, after 1st mish the leader quit and the padders dropped and the 3 of us left got wiped 3 times then 1 of them had to leave so utter failure as a team! and these are all true to life as it stands out there!

Second, BEING padders, why would you complain when they drop? By definition, that's what padders DO - bump up the team size so you can alter the spawns, then drop.
Third, when your team size got cut in half, and you started having problems, why didn't you restart the mission?
Fourth, even with one other dropping, why couldn't you duo for a bit, and check for new teammates between missions? You're not stuck with the same people you start with - you CAN add people.
"Failure as a team?" Failure of leadership would be more honest. A good leader will be evaluating how the team's running, restarting if needed, dropping or raising difficulty and more.
I have to say I had both experiences today.
I was on several servers and there just didn't seem to be enough characters in the level range of my character that it would be worth starting a team.
I was on another where I was able to get a team of 8 running for a while before it disintegrated rather abruptly.
Last night I was on a team of 8 as well.
It seems more like feast or famine to me.
I thought a lot of players were on Test, but I didn't see many on over there earlier today. Player count does seem to be down a good bit. I think it has been dropping post i15 - I hope I'm wrong.
First, why did you need padders? Short of starting a task or strike force - or a farm - you don't "need" a minimum number of people to do *anything.* (Barring the VERY rare "simul-click the glowies" missions. I'd be surprised if there were ten of those in all the game's story arcs any more.)

Ahh... but i wasnt the leader on this trial/respec so the leader who got padders which i wasnt complaining so much but when left caused the cons to go from yellow to purple 2 missions in then leader dropped and then a girl had to go get her hair done and that left 2 on a 4 man trial fighting everything purple death combo so as a team it failed
I have a lvl 15 controler on Virtue named Dilirium and my last three nights of playing, I have had absolutly zero problems getting on a team. In fact, all three nights I was invited to a team less then 15 seconds after stating that I was LFT.
My wife on the other hand has a scrapper on a different server and she cant score an invite to save her life.
btw, we're in our first week of playing this game and both of are eager to learn about heading up missions to avoid this when ever possible.
@ RemianenI, you sound exactly like the leader of a team that I'd so appreciate being a part of. I like your gusto and take charge way of creating fun for yourself and your team. That's what its all about. Quite the inspiring post btw.
