I've never seen any arguments over post counts here...

If you thought I was talking about the Rep meters... then yes, indeed they will cause problems... popularity contests always end in tears...

I think i'm gonna make an effort to keep my rep as "an unknown quantity".

I don't really see the rep meter as that big a deal, it's sooo tiny most folks won't notice it.

Yeah, but they'll say the same with anything, if it's not post count, it's Reg date, if it's not Reg date, it's you avatar, if it's not your avatar it's you signature, if it's not your sig it's your forum name...

People like that are the reason I've been known to enter discussions with, "Hey, at least I'm willing to admit I'm an *****."

I'm not planning on disabling it simply because I doubt I'll ever post anything of meaning that will inspire folks to go, "She's brilliant, add to her rep," or "She's an *****, detract from it." I will hover on the fine line of mediocrity.

I don't mind the rep so much. What I dislike is the comment. When you rep somebody you are allowed to make a comment. Yet you can't see who the person is that just left that comment to you. Thats not right in my opinion.

Really? I've been on other sites that use this engine/software/whatever and you can see who left the comment. Oh, that bites. Yet another venue for those people that are willing to wave their inferiority complexes in your face while hiding behind the anonymity of the Internet.

Yeah, on the other forum with a reputation point system I go to, the reps are anonymous. I usually sign off with my nick as a courtesy; on a possibly related note, I've also always given only positive reps. People I'd give negative reps to are usually those who would end up on my ignore list anyway.

All this discussion about the rep system reminds me of the old User Star system, and what happened when CuppaJo disabled it.

For the most part the move was greeted with approval or indifference (mostly indifference), but the explanation of where the user stars went was basically Cuppa posting a monologue from Katamari Damacy verbatim. Which promptly got criticized for being too "flippant", making Cuppa have to apologize.

I still don't know what to think about that, but I am curious if we'll be seeing something similar happen for the rep system if it gets removed.

Have disabled it, which makes it better than the star system, couldn't disable that

Ah, you need to leave a content with Negative stars but not Positive stars, it seems.
This removes a great deal of the trolling fun that could be had.
Still, not altogether a bad system I suppose. I'll be +ing people that make good/funny comments and mostly ignoring the system otherwise.

Upon going to the Members List, and ranking according to reputation, would someone please explain to me how in the holy hell I am ranked THIRD?! There are THOUSANDS of forumites more highly regarded than moi who are currently being shunned, CAST ASIDE by the public's failure to step up and rep these people accordingly!

This, ladies and gentlemen, is a clear sign of the times we live in.
