Yes you are correct, Although I may set up a stand in atlas offering help and advice on game mechanics and content to level 50 AE players so I can do my part in helping the new CoH-AE community.

Epic powers are available at level 41 and above, so you have a good amount of time to figure those out on your new character before you get there. If you're on a villain, they'll be Patron Powers for whichever patron villain you choose.
Both are entirely optional for you, but do contain some nice filler powers.

Heroes, it shows up automatically when you're lvl 41, you can only have 4 extra power pools outside of primary and secondary, and you probably had 4 by the time you hit 41, so it wouldnt have shown up. There are a couple different "Epic" pool options for most ATs, usually a thematic thing like "Ice mastery" or "Fire Mastery" and so on, villains are a little bit different, and have "Patron powers" instead.
On heroes once you become lvl 41 they open up to you they pop up right under the regular pool powers.
On villains they are call patron powers and they have to be unlocked by doing one of the four patron arcs. and the arcs become avalible to you shortly before lvl 41.

When you level up past 41, you can choose from another set of powers. You really do need to concentrate on reading the screens and getting all the information you can from contacts including the trainer.
Definitely do the tutorial. And definitely *stay out of AE until you know how to play*... seriously.
Keep asking questions. Head to the paragonwiki, read up. Greet people in your server forum down below, see if there are proper teams and task forces you can join.

Yes, while he's made some mistakes, this is how we should handle the AE babies that are showing up...help them learn the game. Not badmouthing them and telling them they are wrong just because they got sucked into the new AE feature.
To the OP:
Run either tutorial on a new character. Keep this one around. After you get a handle on the game you can go rebuild the second build or respec this one into possibly a great toon.
I agree that a scrapper or a brute would be a good first solo toon route. My first was a spine regen scrapper that I still enjoy. Since you're kind of used to a blaster, spines might be a good choice because it has several ranged attacks along with the melee attacks, along with several AOE attacks. Regen is a little on the squishy side...he can't take a lot of damage at once, but he recovers quickly from damage he does get if he survives.
Definitely stay away from Kheldians (Peacebringers and Warshades) or VEATS (Soldiers of Arachnos or Widows) until later because they can be much more complicated to get built right to be very useful.
Ask questions. If you can't figure something out even after reading the tutorials, go out on broadcast and ask around, or get on the forums like you have done here. This game has many people on that are more than willing to help someone out who is genuinely trying to learn the game.
I agree to also avoid the AE for a while. Reserve the AE for times when you want to level up but there is no more content left in the game at your level that you can do.

Very first piece of advice: Roll up a new character and DO NOT SKIP THE TUTORIAL. Read EVERYTHING in it as you go through. Once you're out of the tutorial, STAY AWAY FROM THE MISSION ARCHITECT. Run your normal missions, at -least- for the first 10 levels. Play the game. Don't ask anyone to PL you, don't let them if they offer.
Basically, you suck because you were rushed to 50 without actually playing the game and didn't bother to learn what you were doing.

The OP is a poster child for my current suggestion I keep touting.
At level 5, Detective/Broker appears as a contact. At level 10, the College Dean appears as a contact. At level 20+, the costume shops appear as contacts.
Hopefully, this will generate enough curiousity amongst some of the AE Babies to go out in the rest of the game world and explore a bit.
Now that he has tasted the PLing and the addictive Dinging that comes every 10 minutes in AE PL farms, how long you give this guy before he gets bored in the streets with his new char and come back ASAP to get another PL in AE?
AE is so broken. That's sad. It does not bode well.

Ive a 5th lvl toon with Xp turned off and try to catch them before there exposed to Ae. So far the last 2 weeks Ive turned quite a few on to the sewers and real missions,
