Yes, it's called "selling out"

Swear to God, if this turns into another "24 hour Miracle of Birth" channel like TLC, I'm gonna hurt someone in corporate

And the UK....

Still has Sci Fi.

For now the UK does, but it will be changed to SyFy once branding rights can be established in the UK.

lol quick reply

Meh. As long as they show Gundam 00 (the first Gundam series I got excited about ever since I discovered subs for Turn A) and the occasional ECW, then the name change isn't too jarring for me.

It's still stupid, though.

Gundam 00 was WAY better in Japanese.

While it looks silly, the name change doesn't bother me. Last night while watching Warehouse 13 I saw promos for Eureka, Caprica, Sanctuary, and Stargate Voyager... errr Universe. As long as I get these sort of shows it doesn't matter what logo is floating in the corner. And since I watch things pretty much exclusively via DVR I don't have to deal with their non-genre programming.

I will say the new motto bothers me more: "Imagine greater" is just linguisticly uncomfortable to my brain.

Bothers me, too, as my brain fills in "Imagine greater than SciFi. We know what we are doing."
For some reason, I keep seeing a certain PsiCop smiling when I hear/see that.

The chills it causes, the chills.

Since I don't have the DVDs, and I'm not willing to subject myself to fansub group drama, I can't form an informed opinion.

However, the dub isn't as bad as most people would think. Certainly better than SEED's, but not as good as G's, even WITH the obligatory Name Changes To Protect The Children™. Of course, that's just my opinion, so...

I never minded fantasy on SciFi. It always made sense to me, I see scifi and fantasy lumped together everywhere. Of course I'm talking actual fantasy, like LOTR or Merlin or one of those. You know, something with magic or monsters.

Despite the historical inaccuracies, Braveheart is not fantasy. Neither is The Patriot. They're historical fiction at best. And yet they've shown both of these movies on the Sci Fi channel. That coupled with wrasslin has made me all but abandon the channel.

I look forward to Eureka, Voyagegate and Caprica, but it seems like if it's not Friday night, there's no reason to watch anymore.

what does SyFy mean to me? More COX then ever before, i was semi interested in "Lost In Voyager Gate", "Caprica - AKA I'Robot" and some of the new shows but somehow I feel that this will be as bad as WB/UPN/USA all in one.

I love SciFi for BSG!
I love SciFI for Farscape!
I hate SciFi for cancelling Farscape
I hate SciFi for all the Stargate shows!!
Methinks I just really hate SyFy!!

Syfy sounds like Syphilis. And I can only think that one day we'll all be asking ourselves: remember when Syfy used to be called Sci-Fi and actually showed that on the channel? You know, kind of like we all reminisce about the days when MTV actually had music videos on it.

The LCD is master. And I don't mean Liquid Crystal Display. Yet another sadness piled upon sadnesses. This old dawg wonders what's next.

Yesterday I tuned to CNN for some news about North Korea, Iraq, Iran...

And there was nothing but MJ's Death Circus.

The Death of Intelligence will not be televised. Nobody will know how to use the equipment.

I'm mostly concerned with how their new promo video has some "house party" with a few weird things going on as opposed to those awesomely insane channel promo thingies where some dude uses his icy superpowers to help a penguin cross a lake, or some balding pervert is thwarted when the woman he intends to grope extends her spines.

I'm sort of glad to be rid of the dog being blown up like a baloon and the woman popping after pricking her finger on a flower... those sort of creeped me out. But I'll miss the rest.

Sci-fi has always just been the UPN of cable TV for me. Really bad shows and bad movies. I watch ECW and ghost hunters and thats about it, so the name change won't effect me much.

edit: ok. harsh, but Sci-Fi switching to SyFy has far more to do with branding than the 'abandonment of all nerd holiness'. Honestly the programing has been slowly broadening for years. If better branding lets them buy better shows, Then can call the channel 'FyFyi the SySy poodle' for all I care. It doesn't have to be a Bad Thing

Yeah but Sci-Fi catered more to my nerdness. SyFy is full of fluff looking and not nerdness. :P

It's only been a week, so I think it's a little early to cry doom. Now, if they announce Twilight: The Series, THEN you can panic.

I loved their reasoning for the rename: "The term SciFi is associated with nerdy overweight kids with body odor who live in their mothers' basements; we do not want this type of audience - we want the young, hip tech-savvy crowd."

They succeeded in pissing off Science Fiction fans; now, who exactly are they planning to attract? The "young, hip, tech-savvy" users of Facepuke or something?

Posted

Well, this explains why BBC America is showing the new Doctor Who episodes (the last four or five Tennant episodes..) first instead of Sci-Fi..(I refuse to call it by that uncool mispelling..)

Syfy is actually Polish slang for Syphilis.

Sci-fi should have used protection.
