Even if you have a separate Comlink for 'public coms' and a hidden one handling your PAN and slaved devices, it's just a higher threshold electronic warfare + scan test to find the hidden comlink. (5 or 8 iirc). Once you find the hidden com and bust down it's firewall, it's an easy test to simply orphan all the devices slaved to it and create a huge hassle. Sure he may not get your palm-inducted smartlinks; but he'll get every other electronic device on you: sunglasses (if you aren't using cybereyes) or contacts, ear buds, sub vocal mi, etc - not everyone has everything headwared - and not everything has the option for skin induction. And even if it does, it's still slaved to a comlink in order to work with everything else - all the hacker needs to do is find that comlink. Having a hidden one just slows them down, not stops them.
According to the book it's a Hardware test just to turn a Comlink off, as most have no obvious 'off' switch.
Gotta remember, most devices aren't designed for Shadowruners.their made by Megacorps who want your (their) stuff to be on display for everyone to see.

Sheesh

sorry
But thanks... I needs mah caffeine.
Parts of SR4 can get plain silly without a good GM 'riding herd' so to speak. I've seen builds with starting characters pulling out as many as 40 dice for social tests. Or Mages starting with force 15 bound spirits, (Which pretty much Godzilla over everything). A good GM is a must for any Pencil and Paper game, even ones without people who try to break the system.
I am currently in a game that has been running weekly for over two years now. We are getting ready to reset because most of the characters are in the 200-220+ karma range. In that crew if you can't throw 18+ dice at a problem, you are doing something wrong. But it is stretching the bounds of what the system can handle, so we're working on a big blow out retirement run, (Think, The Italian Job) and going to reset after a short break.
And our Hacker never has had a problem having stuff to do, in combat or out of it. Hacking comlinks for false text messages ("Pull back!") or voice calls, messing with the friend/foe settings on smartguns, sending an Agent into an enemy drone or vehicle, and of course - keeping enemy hackers from doing the same to us - is only the beginning. Opening Exit routes, Cutting off bad guy reinforcements, hacking the traffic grid to help in high speed chases, plain old Electronic Warfare - Jaming, Counter-Counter Measures, and keeping us linked up are all part of his job description.
I think the only guy making more rolls is the Sam, who's got four passes (Where most of the party other than the hacker averages one or two).
IMO, Hacker is the only 'not-optional' member of a team. So by all means, play a Hacker. Even if you are new. Dive in with both feet.

OMG - I just had the Coolest IDEA. EVER.
*clears throat*
So who thinks Paragon Studio's next project should be Shadowrun Online?
Eh? Eh?
*Groucho-Eyebrows* -
I've been playing Shadowrun since it hit the shelves (very literally), and I now that I've spent some time with 4th ed, (and 4a) I really, honestly think it's the best edition of Shadowrun to date. I hated the 'exploding sixes' from previous editions, Thresholds are much easier to predict and manage (from a Game Master PoV especially) than a high target number.
As far as the Art goes, I kinda like it. The Internal art especially I think is much improved. I still have my 1st edition, 2nd edition And 3rd Edition sets in storage, and when I first got the 4a book I had the chance to do a side by side comparison of 2nd and 3rd - the art is so much better (with the exception, maybe, of the cover; but Larry Elmore is iconic for RPG book art.)
Then again - I am a Huge Shadowrun fan. There are very few books I did not buy, and nothing from 3rd and 4th edition (by which time I'd crawled out of my parents basement and started working for my own money) I did not get. I even bought the shamefully overpriced and indulgent leather bound limited-and-numbered edition 20th anniversary book, in addition to a regular 4a book to use for normla use. The leather bound one stays on my shelf and I hiss at anyone who looks at it funny.
As a side note: Castle, the fact you played enough Shadowrun to ramble off that tid bit above just made me reup my CoH sub for another six months, (Or will when I get paid). I maintain City Of has the coolest frickin' gamer devs in the business.
(Also, GR was pretty good, and I am liking it a lot, /tangent off) -
Upgrading to 197.45 (the latest drivers on nvidia's page) does not fix the problem
-
I thought I was? I updated as soon as open beta started.
(Search) alright, apparently there are new drivers that have come out in the last couple of weeks. I'll try those.
However, my machine was working fine in beta with the drivers I am currently running. -
I am running a fairly high end machine: AMD Phenom II quad core, 8 gb ram, dual nvidia 9800's in SLI.
I am running the 196.21 drivers for my 9800's, I have SLI enabled in the nvidia control panel. I am using Television's (unsupported) SLI enable code -slifbos 2, but my problem seems to occur with or without it.
Whenever I see water for the first time logging in, it has an extreme flicker. This can be corrected by sliding the water reflections setting in options down to nothing, and the sliding it back up again. This will fix the problem most times until you zone. Sometimes I get two or three zone's out of it.
I am running with all the new ultra mode setting maxed, except for 3D resolution scaling, which I have at 1712x918 (from my desktop of 1900x1020) and Ambient Resolution is only on Quality. Everything else is at it's highest setting. V-sync is off, but enabling it does not make any difference.
I took a video to demonstrate what I am talking about. I submitted this as a ticket as well, but I figured I'd ask here just in case I missed a common problem. (I searched, but my search-fu is weak.) -
Quote:When it comes to how much I'll respect the artist for using stock photos as references, I will always give more credit to the one not using reference. They put 100% of their own work into the piece, unlike the one who copied from a ref. No matter what you do, when you copy something, it's never entirely yours.
When I was thinking about how I was going to respond, I sat and stared at my quoted passage blankly for a good fifteen minutes. As it rolled over to after midnight, I was haunted by the memory of one of my favorite webcomics:
Xkcd #386
(I <3 xkcd)
I find your answer perplexing, given how many artists I know work from references - including an art professor at a major university who teaches Anatomy of the human form, and all of her assignments use references - none of them are live models. You learn to draw the human form by drawing the human form. You learn to do it right by looking at the real thing. Not everyone has access to a model (or models) to work out the solutions to a particular piece they are going to work on. Sometimes taking a picture of yourself in your underwear works, and that's fine and good for portraits (if you are the same general shape and gender of your subject). For the rest of the time, you need a good reference and you can't always find a stock piece in the right pose, or the right lighting, or whatever. Sometimes you leaf through your favorite art book (or deviant art) and see how other artists solved your particular problem. (Tough to find stock photo models doing mid cartwheel flips like spidey - and often expensive, easy to find ridiculous McFarlane poses all over the intrawebz for free. Free is important when you are just drawing Sipdey for your own amusement/practice and then want to show it off to friends when it comes out good.)
Anyway, it's after midnight, I can form no coherent thoughts other than "I disagree, but mostly in the 'intellectual debate' sense, not the 'oh my god I hate your face' sense". Tomorrow is i17, and I'll be too busy trying to get my real work (stupid real life and it's stupid deadlines) done for the day so I can roll up my demon summoner and eat Longbow faces.
So: I mostly disagree with you, and I'm too tired to justify my position clearly so I've just sort of been rambling on (this is why I lurk most of the time - my forum time is when my brain is too mushy to do real work, and I embarrass myself).
Yeah.. good night. -
Quote:This is a proper example of acceptable use of reference. While having copied the pose from a photograph, Juggy took the photo himself, thusly having supplied himself with his own references. It would be the same as 'stealing from himself' which you can't do. Everything in the picture has been brought to the piece by Juggs himself, so this is perfectly acceptable.
So where does stock photography fit into this? That is, photo references taken for the deliberate purpose of being used as reference material for artists of all mediums. Especially stock photography that's for sale? (two seconds on google and you'll find several sites doing a thriving business). Do artists who use stock photography to create pieces 'mar' their work? Are they just ripping off the photographer?
Speaking as a photographer (rather than a line artist, as most of you seem to be) it is entirely impossible for me to partake in my chosen medium of art without using some form of reference. I must take a picture of something. By many of the definitions outlined here, that makes anything, any picture I take, a derivative work. Using the car example, if I want a picture of a sports car, and I take a shot of a Porsche, regardless of the technique I use, or the tools, or the style: I am still 'photocopying' someone else's design work. There is no getting around the fact that photography does not 'create' anything new and original in the eyes of most people (especially line artists <3).
Except that it does.
One of my favorite photography books on landscaping is titled, "Painting with Light". I think the title alone is descriptive of what the author's view of (landscape) photography is, and I do not disagree, I would extend the metaphor to all forms of photography.
This is especially important when these days, a photographer's work is hardly done when the studio session is over, there is arguelably even more work to be done in the dark room/photoshop (depending whether using film or digital), transforming the raw photoage into something more expressive. very photo photos are as impressive or stunning right out of the camera. Sometimes you get lucky, but most of the time it's a process.
So here I am, taking a shot of a model from a studio shoot (lets further complicate the issue and say someone besides me designed her dress, someone else did her hair, and yet another person did her make up), and I begin using photoshop to airbrush her; perhaps even changing the color and tone of her original dress, make-up or hair. Or smudging her hair out to something more pleasing to the eye. What if the pose is derivative of something well known, such as Marilyn Monroe's windy dress pose? (And how much of that was Her skill as a model, or the camera man's skill with a camera?)
Who does the credit go to? The Model? The Make up artist? The photographer? How much do I have to change before the work becomes mine? (not speaking legally, I know the answer to that.)
T.S. Elliot is often misquoted as saying 'Good Writers borrow, great writer's steal.' (He didn't by the way, despite what the internet tells you.) And the sentiment is usually (when not being used as an excuse for being lazy) interpenetrated as good work inspires great work. We all (as artists) rely on each other to go from Good to Great. If we are forbidden from using other artists as inspiration, in even broad strokes (such as style, form, etc) then what the Heck are we doing forming communities as artists? You are better off (and safer) sequestering yourself and never looking at anyone else's work. Of course that's not true, and I don't believe anyone here thinks it is.
Anything after that though is a matter of degrees, and where you draw the line. (pun intended.) -
those fire whips would be the reason that I would even half consider a pet-less MM.
Not that I am going to mind you. I like pets.
Probably going /thermal. thematically it's strong, mechanically it's strong, and the other thematic options I would consider playing myself, I already have. Already have a necro/dark, already have a bots/traps, already have a ninja/poison and a ninja/storm. I also have a dark corrupter and defender I am currently leveling, so I don't wanna triple up there. /storm was a tempting choice, but I have a storm MM already, and my favorite controller is ice/storm, so again.. trippling up.
never played a therma and it seems strong on all accounts.
So thermal it is.
With matching green fire, a wicked witch costume and a nice name (already muled, with costume: Amorala) -
I didn't see this character, and I think she looks pretty neat, so adding this to the collection. I didn't have your font (and didn't want to pay 30 bucks for it) so I used a slightly scaled times new roman to approximate. Feel free to copy and host yourself
-
I'm guessing that my demon summoner will be a good time to give the animated tails a spin too >.>
-
haha, I've been back for over a month. >_> but I lurk. I'm a lurker.
<_< -
Thanks guys :-)
I like to think of myself as more of a photographer for games than an 'artist' (though I consider photographers artists, you don't often think of artists as photographers, especially for game/comic art). I spend a lot of time framing shots, taking dozens of screen captures until my angle and lighting are right. Then like any modern fashion or magazine photographer, I spend many hours in photoshop airbrushing out blemishes, correcting lighting and color balancing, outright handpainting details and highlights that don't exist in the original shot, etc.
So I guess I am a "Screenshot photographer". -
.. Ages since I posted anything here...
So I thought I'd sort of "re-introduce" myself.
I do screenshot manipulations. Everything I do involved screen captures from a game (in this case CoH) and then extensive retouching in photoshop. Some handpainting, some creative layering and mask effects, color adjustments, judicious use of the smudge and liquify tool, and limited filter effects (mostly careful blurring). I do not use a renderer or any 3d modeling software, nor do I try to paint a completely new digital painting.
What I aim for is something you can easily recognize as 'City of' graphics and textures, realized as only an artist with a few hours and photoshop airbrush can bring to life - just like all those supermodels you see in Elle and Maxium :P. Real life with an airbrush.
Anyway...
My latest creation:
Diana of Olympus:
Chosen by the Goddess Athena to be Her Avatar on Earth, Diana is a protector of "New Athens", the heart of Western Civilization in the world - Paragon City.

Quote:Well, I wouldn't count on End Drain getting a significant bump. It's not very effective for a Defenders Electric Blast, I can't image that Controller's would get a massive debuff denied to Defenders. I, also, don't think we'll see a different secondary effect. That would be counter-intuitive to everything they've done with Electricity up to date. I'm guessing the damage scale will be identical to Ice Control. That being said, Electricity is pretty good with AoE powers.
I could see this:
I. Electric Fence (Immob, -End)
II. Tesla Cage/Shocking Bolt/Electric Shackles (Hold, -End)
III. Electrifying Fences (AoE Immob, -End)
IV. "Sleep" Chain Induction (Ranged Single Target Sleep, - End, +Special - Power May Arc to Other nearby opponents)
V. Lightning Field (Toggle PBAoE Minor Damage, -End)
VI. Lightning Clap (PBAoE Disorient, Knockback)
VII. Unnamed AoE Hold (AoE Hold, -End)
VIII. Short Circuit (PBAoE Morderate Energy Damage, -End, -Recovery)
IX. Gremlins (Melee Minor Energy Damage)
I agree this is the likely breakdown of powers.
I really hope it's not fire control with electric graphical effects plus one -END -Recovery power. Oh and a sleep instead of smoke.
But I agree what you have is the likely set up of the power structure. -
Funny, I didn't even notice the whole mids/vs concept post when I (very vainly) posted the costume theme layout of my scrapper.
Waaaaaaay back - we're talking like, release of CoV back, I posted a guide called 'How to build roleplayable characters' The writing was awful, my spelling was worse, and my grammar was terrible; but the concept was sound. For many people in the SG I found myself in at the time, the idea was you either had to have a cool concept build or a 'good' build.
I've never believed they were mutually exclusive. Speaking as someone with over 24 characters on Virtue alone that are over 16, and who has deleted more than a dozen 20+ characters in my CoH character, I can say with confidence that good builds and good concepts are both better when tasted together. Like Chocolate and Strawberries, or lemon and aide.
I do no claim all my concepts are good, or all my builds are good. When the two synergize however, something greater than the sum of it's parts emerges. Some of my favorite characters started out as the search for a good primary and complimentary secondary - with some of the best concepts. My Forum namesake for example, Snowlily - my Ice/storm controller and my first 50. I wanted to try a controller, and was pretty sure it was going to be ice, so I did some research and settled o the combo. Turns out actually playing the character taught me ten times more about both sets than any of my research every did, but that doesn't change the fact she is my favorite concept character and remains one of my favorite builds to play.
On the other hand, another character, that was based on a very popular build (at the time, pre i4) was my burn tanker, the fire/fire Foxlily. Who worked insanely well (largely due to the broken mechanics of burn tanking) but was kind of meh to play, and wallowed in her 40's until almost i13 before I finally got around to finishing off those last 8 or so levels. One of the reasons for that is that the build came long before the concept did, and it wasn't until much later did the concept for her emerge.
One more example. One of my favorite concepts, that I have tried to make work since literally since the second week of live, is my character Superstition. She has been rerolled as a claws/regen, claws/sr, claws/dark, illusion/kin, DM/SR, and currently as illusion/storm (and that will probably not last). She is such an awesome character, with a freakin awesome name (which is why I've hung onto it for six damn years) that I can not find a build that works for her that makes her fun for me to play. So concept alone is not enough for me to fully enjoy a character.
So what is my rambling point...
That concept and build are not like the wrong ends of a magnet, they are like the attracting ends of a magnet. When they come together, the whole is much stronger and better, and the search for both should not be exclusive to one then the other, they should be conducted together, for a greater whole. -
Looking cool, well having a theme helps!
/hijack_off
I am utterly in love with BS/SD. Of my four 50's, it's the first one I have been serious enough about to put some serious (for me!) money into (see my thread Broadsword and shield on a buget for my build and the great advice given to me there about slotted for softcapping def on a Shield scrapper.) My very first character in CoH was a Katana/regen scrapper and I played her heavily for a long time, but she wallows at 38, as I am unable to get enthused enough about her any more to muster any play time.
For the longest time, everyone I knew was all "regen Regen OMG REGEN!" and now it seems to be 'Shields shields OMG SHIELDS!"
I've played and deleted half a dozen other scrappers up to their twenties, including a 26 spines/regen 'back in the day'. None of them were ever as much fun as I found shields to be.
Seriously, they could call the set 'Shield charge' and put in nine other powers that did nothing but say "look how awesome Shield Charge is!' and I would love the set still. -
You must have some serious market skills to have gotten all those mako's and sciro's for under 50m
Nice :-)
I want to thank everyone for the advice, I've got a new build I am working toward that softcaps melee and ranged (without parry), and aoe is easily softcaped with a single small luck. recharge is over 40% and recovery over 3/s. I'm going to call that a win.

This build is over 3/4's done now, and the only really expensive thing left is numina's unique. hopefully with some good market luck I'll be completed by the end of the month -
hrm, k. one sec on the datalink
Edit: datalink should be fixed now (I hope) -
So, after hitting 50 on my scrapper gal, I did some hard thinking and realized that of my four current 50's, the scrapper is both the easiest and most entertaining to do farming type activities or various AV battles, task forces etc. So I've decided to lay down an investment in her.
Over the weekend I spent all of the merits I'd been saving for a rainy day and got -very- lucky on my results (two LotG recharges, 2 Miracle recoverys, and a bunch of mako's. The mako's and LotG I can slot and save myself a ton of cash, the two miracles netted me almost 300 million) together with some other assorted stuff I came out of the deal with a bunch of stuf i could use and almost 400 million in influence.
So I have 1 veteran respec left, and was considering this build. I already have most of this (I have one complete mako set, the two LotG recharges, bits and pieces of the two oblit sets, the multistrike set, the kineteic combat set, one of the red fortune sets and some 5/6 of the guasian set.) I did some pricing and cautious (bu t reasonable) bidding on some of the more expensive pieces I don't have, and figure picking up the rest is just a matter of market patience and not paying the 'buy-it-Nao' prices.
The problem I have with it, is I am -still- not even close to softcapped in AoE, pretty close in ranged, and only melee when using parry (which isnt an issue)
How the heck are people softcapping shields without purples? Or is that even possible?

Soft cap is 45 right?
*scratches head* I'm confused.
(edit datalink fixed?) -
I really like the head detail that looks like headphones (one of the side ear pieces) for sonic characters.
Anything else you can tell us? Male/female/Huge? color scheme? Power color scheme? source of powers/origin? -
It doesn't sound elitist, it sounds about right
(another reason I am reluctant to 'blow my wad' on base build.)
On the other hand, the AE thing is working really well (or I got lucky) I ran two arcs last night at +0/+4 and pulled enough tickets to fill my recipes up twice, pulled two entropic chaos that sold for 14m+ and 2 mako's bites for myself.
This on top about 1/3rd of 45 to make 46. So maybe I just need to run some of those dev choice arcs I've been meaning to get around too for a while and I'll be in a better position.
Thanks for all the advice guys - and no, none of you sounded elitist - you sounded realistic and honest, which is what I wanted -
Thanks for all the advice, but making money isn't the issue. Money I am willing to spend is. I probably have about 250-300 million spread across several characters, but I am not willing to bankrupt myself to 'try out' a build/character. What I was looking for is something I could drop ten-twenty million into right now, to carry me to 50 when I'll decide if I want to settle down into the process of seriously IO'ing the character out.
(Which is a good theory.. but so far I haven't managed it, as my attention span on capped characters is very low.. I'd much rather roll a new character and gain new powers than spend a week getting the influence/merits for a +3% def increase. I keep telling myself one of these days I'll 'finish' a character with a shiny IO set build.. but thus far it hasn't happened. hehe)
The AE ticket idea is good though.. I always forget about the AE as I generally PUG missions and TF's all the time.
