Sci-Fi -vs- SyFy

Now, if they announce Twilight: The Series, THEN you can panic.

Sadly, while I have no interest in the movies or books, I would probably watch that. I love vampire tv shows, and the more terrible, predictable, and melodramatic they get the more I like them. Odd character flaw I guess...

this explains why BBC America is showing the new Doctor Who episodes (the last four or five Tennant episodes..) first instead of Sci-Fi
[/ QUOTE ]
I'd say that Doctor Who being produced by the actual BBC has more impact on that. Being a window into their shows is kind of the point of the network...

Yeah but Sci-Fi catered more to my nerdness. SyFy is full of fluff looking and not nerdness. :P

It's only been a week, so I think it's a little early to cry doom. Now, if they announce Twilight: The Series, THEN you can panic.

They already have Moonlight, which is sort of like Forever Knight meets... Twilight? (Nah, not sappy enough.)
Dr. Todt's theme.
i make stuff...
[ QUOTE ]
Syfy is actually Polish slang for Syphilis.
Sci-fi should have used protection.
[/ QUOTE ]
IIRC it's primarily slang for filthy/unclean/gross, with syphilis being the much more uncommon meaning.
[i]Not that that's much better....
Dr. Todt's theme.

Oh god... someone needs to bring that up to the Sci-Fi channel's hang out and get that sorted out.
Sci-Fi vs. SyFy?
I was mad when McDonald's came out with thier slogan (plastered all over thier products) of :[ QUOTE ]
i'm lovin it

No period, no capitolization and I'm not even sure that they used the punctuation in the middle of the contraction for "I am" at the beginning. Do you hear me, McDonald's? *shakes fist*
You are glorifying the bastardization of the English language that text-messaging is doing. The message I get behind it is "Write like this when you apply for jobs. That way, you'll be desperate enough to work at McDonald's after no one else will hire you."
Way to go, McDonald's. Glorify the dumbing-down of our language and culture.

Must... refrain from dissing... McD's... breakfest delux... tempting -salivates- awwwwhhhhhl
Personally I dont like the change.
I do however understand the need and desire for the change. This is a business. Branding is very important in a business. You cant brand Sci-fi. It is a genre. You CAN brand SYFY. It is nothing. That gives you a ton of freedom and ways to connect with your audience such as
syfy.com.
Branding. That is what the name change is all about. Every business wants a recognizable brand that is their own. SYFY now has that. I still dont like the move, but it will pay dividends in the future. Thats what the CEO knows, and thats why he changed the name. And that my friends is business in America where the dollar comes before anything else. That Includes alienating a few die-hard fans because the people that replace them will net you more cash than you lose.

I agree with what you say, however the branding they used is ...well... Not going to bring new business like they think, they'll change to something else in a year or 2 and that change will be far from the idea of sci-fi, i remember when coke did this in the 80's it almost sank the company if you look on the coca-cola can it says classic for a reason.
hey atleast all you have cable...Me and my wife wish we could see the change. I only found out cause I was lookin into when i could expect to find more Eureka, and when exactly the new Stargate series will start airing.
but really the name change kind of fits. They've been airing more Science Fiction that doesn't nessecarily have to do with Science or Tech for quite some time.
and I've absolutly hated the fact that the male oriented soap opera they call "Wrestling" even started airing on the network. But aslong as they keep putting out new serieses and repeats of my Fav Sci-Fi shows i'll be happy.

So long as they keep producing shows I like to watch they can call themselves Stinky Poop Salad for all I care. I will continue to pronounce the name as 'Sie-Fie' and spell it as SciFi.

Do what most people that I've talked to are going to do: Ignore the change.
What I mean by that is don't write it or acknowledge it in forums, BBs, Blogs. Letters and communications to the channel should be addressed to the "Sci-Fi Channel." If you order the channel make sure that you tell your cable or dish provider that you don't see the "Sci-Fi Channel" and ask them to make a note that you couldn't recognize it by it's new "brand." Same with any branded products... movies ect. make sure to tell the outlet after having them point it out to you that you would have never guessed that "****" meant it was the "Sci-Fi Channel" and ask the manager to take the complaint.
Guys, they changed this for Branding Recognition... to have a copyrightable logo and term because they can' copyright the term "Sci-Fi" (just their specific logo of it). Communicate to them that you don't (won't) recognize the new "****" logo, get other people to do it as well, and eventually the bean-counters will make the decision *for* the "creative" idiots that evolved the idea and toss it for something more recognizable... hopefully firing whatever geniuses came up with it in the first place.
Also, keep in mind that they only changed it in the US (at last mention) because other countries won't get the supposed phonetic connection (and it that **** means something very derogatory in at least one language). This is a good indicator that at least someone at the network wasn't entirely convinced. We want to prove this one guy right.
