LOL-tastic Synapse TF today.

Did a Synapse today on Virtue. I was on as Heavy Companion Cube (yes, the Cake *IS* moist and delicious), my L42 Dark Armor Scrapper, who was, of course, "autoexemplarified" to L20, fighting those pesky clockworks for hours on end. The team was pretty good, Scrapper, Peacebringer, two Blasters, a Forcefield Defender, and a Grav/Kin controller.

But during the recruiting phase, there was this awful hiatus, whilst we waited on some never-to-be-named controller, who was fighting an AV in Faultline when I contacted them asking them if they would like to join.

"Give me 5 minutes to defeat Nocturne please"

'ok, send tell when ready'.

Rest of team (4 of us) were sitting there in Skyway, waiting for him. He finished about 7 minutes later, sent me a tell, and I post the invite, which he accepts.

'Hi, come to Skyway and then wait at the Green Line, when we start, we'll be off to Steel'

Guy disappears from Faultline, and goes to 'on Mission map' (i.e. his/her Base, because even after 10+ releases the Devs STILL Can't fix the 'Mission/Supergroup/Zone' notificaiton in the buff-bar area!).

'Er, ok, can you come to Skyway'
"On my way to tram"

We wait a while, and someone else sends me a tell asking to join, so we invite them (L16 controller, totally awesome too), and we wait, and wait, and wait.

'We're waiting on you < name >, can you PLEASE come to Skyway so we can start'
"on my way to tram"

< fx /waiting >

After another two minutes, we had a little discussion on the team, and sadly, he was toasted.

'Sorry guy, we're starting now, have fun'

/kick < name >

Honestly, we waited more than 15 minutes whilst he jerked us around, it was very irritating.

He sent a tell post kick, saying he was 'nearly' at the station when I booted him. I'm not at all sad.

Anyhow, It was a great task force, really easy going, people listened, we did stuff, it went swimmingly.

Until the flaky blaster (who had a tendency to go AFK every 15 minutes or so) decided that going from -right next- to the entrace of Boomtown to Steel Canyon was fastest via ... Pocket D.

I mean, the mission in Boom was in the closest building to the Steel Canyon entrance, and the next mission was posted, as being in Steel Canyon, and he goes to pocket D.

Well, he was commonly AFK so that didn't matter much.

Except he just stayed in Pocket D.

"Uh I thought Pocket D was a zone, how do I get out of here?"

The team was aghast in local chat.

We tried to talk him through it. Tried quite hard, and for quite a while. He just couldn't get out of the place.

Eventually we finished the "Long Tom" mission (you know the one) and our very patient controller went to Pocket D to get the Blaster. He was standing next to the elevator, apparently.

"Cmon, this way" she said
'Oh is that all I had to do'

< fx rolleyes in local chat >

Then the controller goes to the Kings Row Station, inviting him along -- and he goes instead to the trainer, fair enough. Then he goes to the station and goes to -- Atlas Park. Then he FINALLY zones in to Skyway, I use Assemble the Team and we get to go into the first Warehouse and Wreak Havok.

"Why am I not getting any XP?"

'You hit Level 21, max level for this is Level 20, you get double influence instead'

That pacified him, a bit, but not a lot.

"How can I make it so I get XP?"

'You can't , you're on the TF, but you'll get a shiny badge and some merits'

It was then that I was a little bit rude (Say it ain't so, Excession, -you-, rude, no way!), and I suggested

'Hey < Blaster > You should hire yourself out to Gaming Conventions. '

"Huh?"

'You know, as comic relief'
'I'm being horrible, just ignore me '

"Oh I'm funny in real life too, it might even work."

'Recalls line from Good Morning Vietnam'

"Not a bad movie"

< insert unstated [rolleyes] here >

...

We finish the warehouse, and whizz off to the next one -- but he goes to the tram and hits Atlas Park.

Slogging through the mission, I eventually ask if he intends to come back. Stony silence.

"if you don't respond, I'll have no choice but to boot you from the TF"

Nothing.

As we near the end of the mission, I ask for a vote from the players, only I respond to my own call, with an all caps "I vote YES"

< blaster > has quit the team

< fx blink >

'LOL!'
"Did he quit?"
"Yeah, he quit"
"Comedy gold!"

It was an awesome display of cluelessness -- he said in a tell that since he wasn't getting XP he was quitting anyway.

Anyhow, that was our awesome Synapse TF. We downed Babbage and clobbered the Clockwork King just fine. Who needs a Tank for Synapse!

-End of Post-

It never fails to amaze me that there are people out there who simply cannot fathom the concept of task/strike force auto exemplaring and that there might be other benefits from a TF/SF besides XP.

I guess this is a feature unique to CoH, since most other MMOs don't un-level you in a dungeon or what have you. Maybe I still have too much faith in the flexibility of the average human mind in dealing with new things.

I know what you mean and I have also noticed a trend lately.. players will join a TF and then after a few missions suddenly without a word just QUIT. This has happened on a couple of Moonfires I have done recently and prompted me to wonder if they were just there to get in those first couple missions in with tons of Warwolves and Vamprii so they could finish up what they needed for the Atlas Medallion.

Another thing that drives me insane is the ones that join and even after the leader explains "Okay we have X number of missions and this usually takes 2-3 hours" They run a couple of missions and suddenly its "Sorry guys I had no idea this would take so long I have to go. RL issues" Were you PAYING ATTENTION at all before we started? Most recent was a Synapse and the only Defender and only player with any heals or buffs quits after mission 4. Okay you can get by on a Synapse with sheer firepower and we did just that but even so the TF leader remarked.. "You're kidding me right? We NEED you!" I wonder sometimes what goes through people's heads when they do stuff like that. In all my time here in game I have never purposely left a TF .. with one exception I was having serious connection issues and I'd get inside a mission and could not get a single attack to fire. Tried /sync, tried /unloadgfx, even tried logging off and rebooting but I was useless. I apologized to the team, mostly good friends, and quit. My reasoning I was adding to the total spawn they faced and adding nothing to help defeat them plus I have too much pride, despite them saying it was okay, to simply tag along and collect XP/INF while doing nothing to contribute.

Only other TF I ever left was due to a power failure LOL Unless the entire team simply decides we can't do this let's call it [which happened yesterday on a STF where we just could not beat down Lord R] I will stick it out to the bitter end. For anyone new here that isn't aware that is called being a TEAM MATE.

Yeah, quitting TFs is something I really don't understand most of the time. I've done it once a couple weeks ago with the RikTF because the leader of the team was threatening to kick people if they didn't do everything right. I apologized to everyone else on the team, and simply told them that I don't work with tyrants and wished them luck.

That is sheer LOL.

I'm glad it happened to you and not me. I wouldn't think it was nearly as funny.

I had something similar happen on a Lady Grey TF...right before we attacked Hamidon...I explained what needed to be done in team chat, where 6 of our 8 members were...the two dunces that weren't paying attention, were on Vent and claimed "we don't know what's going on."

I guess it's too hard to pay attention to the leader of the damn TF when you don't know what the hell to do...

Also, the Stone Tank couldn't grasp the concept of "Hamidon does untyped damage, your resistances and defenses mean nothing, only your mez protection and heal before entering the goo will help." So they sat there like a lump in Granite and died repeatedly.

Man, I'm so glad most of my TF experiences have been good. Especially a recent respec trial, mainly because we had TicToc on the team and were busy fanboying, but then again respec trials tend to be pretty cool, especially when you're in the generator room chatting to pass the time between spawns.

On the other hand, my new motto is 'never start an ITF with four sidekicks'.

Thanks for the giggle.

I have started to see a higher number of players that, if they are not getting XP that is 'teh ub3r', then they think something is wrong.

I am happy for the new players, but I think just like we had to deal with when the game was new, we are in a state where many new players have to learn that this MMO is not like the others...

Maybe it's coincidence, maybe not, but over the last week or so I also witnessed level 50 players drop from TFs after lasting a mission or two. Twice. One was a Brute and the only melee AT on our LGTF. (Not to be deterred, the squishy brigade zerged yellow mitoes with vet attacks.)

I was on a TF over the weekend that seemed doomed to failure. I won't mention which one, or what night, but the folks who were on it would recognize it. Unless this happens a lot, in which case some of you may think, "Wait, is that the one I was on?"

Anyway, we start the TF off with 6 folks. Things go great until we're about thirty seconds into the first mission at which point one of the players literally starts yelling "WHY AM I GETTING NO EXPERIENCE?"

The leader explains the exemplaring thing, and the player yells, "WOULD'VE BEEN NICE TO TELL ME!" and quits as the leader is typing, "It was in my invite message." One of the remaining 5 players is romantically attached to the departed player but decides to stay anyway.

We roll through several more missions and things are going incredibly well. Then, a little over halfway through, the romantically attached player announces, "Sorry gang, I gotta go. Personal reasons." I think someone got yelled at for staying with us. So now we're down to four and wondering if we're still going to be able to take the AV at the end. We decide to slog on and do our best. And we do - we're still steam-rolling things with only 4 players.

Right before the next to last mission, the leader announces, "Guys, there's a medical emergency here, I need to take my wife to the ER." Yikes. After the leader leaves, I suggest we just log out and select another time to finish later so that he can still get credit towards the TF Commander badge.

One of the other two remaining players needs his toon for something else later though, so we decide that rather than just give up, we'll try to finish, even if we do get our butts kicked. The three of us get to the last mission, find the AV and proceed to...

...mop the floor with him! I frankly was stunned. The controller/defender (sorry I forgot which he was) kept spamming transfusion to keep my scrapper near full health while I wailed on the AV and he and the other player kept the minions busy. It was never even close.

So that was my experience with a near disasterous, or what appeared to be a hopeless TF, but obviously I still have a lot to learn since it wasn't even close to being a disaster, or hopeless.

Last night as we were waiting for a Citadel TF to start, one of the players was in Pocket D the entire recruiting phase.

As the recruiting was nearing completion, the team leader starts to ask our clubber to come to Talos.

After the fourth time asking, using all caps (he did it in a fun way, not mean), the clubber informs us that he has the Mission Teleporter.

That's when I say, "But in order to get our first mission in order for you to TP to, we have to *start* the TF which requires everyone to be in Talos."

He then came scrambling to Talos.

On that same TF, I had to teach the team leader what an Ouroboros Portal was, how to get his own Portal, and how to use it as a shortcut.

At least they were willing to learn and didn't fight me over it.

Surprising how many people don't know the exemplaring system.

Did a Speed Posi a few weeks ago, a Blaster hopped in that had all of 3 attacks at level 15 but at least three power pools. He seemed genuinely interested in obtaining as many power pools as he could get.

We ghost the first mission, make good speed on the next one and he mentions that he isn't getting any experience (he was level 22 when he joined.)

"Well no, we mentioned this. You'll be gaining more influence, some prestige and 64 Reward Merits that you can trade in for Recipe rolls or save up..."

'How many power pools can I get?'

"Ummm 4 pools and your epic?"

''I'm not getting any experience, how do I level?'

"Well, you're capped at 15 but you're more than welcome to help us. There are 15 missions though and this is long. By the way, you might want to respec into more attacks."

At this point the other members are begging me to kick him, but given I have near infinite patience with new players, I try to make this work for another mission.

'How do I respec?'

"Well there is a TF in Independence Port. See Jane Hallaway off the bridge. Here, join the Champion badge channel and see if they can help out. You can also get recipes to do it...I can grab one for you if you want <had some stored at Went's>."

He quit team, looking bemused and hoping to level to 41 so he could get his Ancillary Pool.

Then there was the guy that adverted a Speed Posi and AFKd for supper in the second mission, for 10-15 minutes.

Ugh.
Reminds me of the Ernesto Hess TF I ran a long time ago. We wound up waiting twenty minutes for the leader, who had mysteriously gone AFK inside the (completed) mission map after the rest of us had exited. A couple people quit, but most of us didn't want to have all that effort go to waste.
We were all about ready to finally quit ourselves when the guy finally comes out of the mission, and casually mentions "oh, I walked away from the computer and forgot I was on a TF".
The resounding chorus of facepalms could be heard for miles.

After playing this game for over 5 years I've got TONS of great stories. But I think one of my favourite was when we were putting together a team for the second respec. A blaster joined the team who was energy/energy/force and for the next 10 minutes while the team leader built the team he boasted how his blaster was invincible. However he said that he couldn't reverse sidekick below 50 because if he lost Temporary Invulnerability and Force of Nature he became useless and that he couldn't play his character. The team leader tried to explain that with the superior aggro control of the tank and the buffs from the controllers and defenders he would be fine. But after the trial was started and he asked why his Temp Invul and Force of Nature was greyed out he immediately quit the team. We just shook our heads and finished the trial in record ime.

With a decent mix, I've been on a team that downed the King with 3 people left on the TF. If you use the temp. power you get, it's definitely doable. (And you don't have to fight the GM ambush.)

Whether I was getting XP or not, I wouldn't slog through all but the final mission just to quit just because "I'm not getting any XP." I'd want my shiny merits for the extra 15 minutes of effort.
