Ah, memories of playing a local MUD back in the 80s on a 1200 baud modem (of course, I was in elementary school then, and I named my character "Cut" because he used a dagger... sadly, my character names haven't got much better since).

*Grunts* I remember playing Zork I on my uncle's TRS-80, when Zork was still being distributed by Personal Software. I was 6 or 7, so I never really got very far with it. It wasn't until my family got a TI99/4A a few years later (1983) that I got really into the adventure games.
Most of those were the Scott Adams series, which had a very different sort of charm than the Infocom games. By the time we were gaming heavily with the TI99/4A, it had been discontinued, which made finding a lot of games much more difficult.
When we finally got a PCjr (another computer that was discontinued shortly after we got it), the big game was the IBM port of Wizardry (the super-bishop ID 9 cheat code was disabled in the port, so it was like "hardcore" Wizardry). When I wasn't playing that, I was running through Witness and Zork on the TI99/4A. I still have fond memories of Suspended and all those little adorable little robots.
We eventually got a copy of the Infocom "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy". That ate up lots of my time. The big problem I had though, was a turn based bug. If you didn't get everything done before turn 500 or 1000 or something like that, you couldn't get the door to Marvin's room to open. There were a lot of random elements to the game, so I never actually finished it until many years later (1992).
Closest I came to a multi-user mud before 1993 were turn based BBSes. One was a turn based PvP arena gladitorial set up. As I recall, you had to duke it out for two whole day's worth of turns to kill somebody at full strength, so adding in movement into their square, it would take 3 days to kill them. Of course, if they logged in after your turn, they could disengage and you'd have to chase them down. Didn't have anything like health potions, so lost HPs were lost. I remember reading on the message boards about one battle taking over a month because two people kept running around in circles. The sysop finally rebooted the game and declared a tie.
And people wonder I'm so darn patient when I'm playing MMOs...

And I felt extravagant, back then, for having upgraded from the 4.77 MHz 8088 to the 8 MHz 8086. There was no point in upgrading to a '386 unless you were going to run a GUI, and there weren't any Intel-based GUIs worth running until '89.

I would love to have street signs in Paragon. It would have been even more handy back when the stores were unmarked on the map.
I know those were Dev names, but that makes me wonder, do you guys have the streets named? That would be pretty cool.

Of course, neither Zork nor its Infocom successors were that pathological about their command parsing. At the time, I remember thinking it was pretty impressive. (At the time, it probably wasn't bad.)
I remember being very impressed sometimes at what the authors though of that you might do. In one of the installements in the Enchanter series (which I always considered an extension of the Zork line), there was a room with a wall that was described as "noisome". If you said "listen to wall" it would reply "The wall is noisome, not noisy!"
Edit: By the way, I really enjoyed the screenshots. They brought back a lot of nostalgia, and I thought the frustration of the player expressed in all-caps commands was awesome.

I remember when I was a kid that my parents had a TI Texas Instruments and I played a pirate game called Adventure but never got very far in the game before I gave up never could find a way out of the old abandoned house on the deserted island that was being guarded by a sleeping pirate. Good times!
Funny, I have a toon named Cpt. Liberty. Not quite the same though, and variations on the name are pretty common.

I remember trying to play two of these games. I think that I kept drowning the Fantastic Four or got them stuck in a pit (or something like it) at the beginning of the game and NEVER got any further
Same with the Hobbit. I got as far as a cave on the mountain before the blood on the monitor from me banging my head against it made it impossible to go any further
