They're going to let us do WHAT?!

If they're letting us have the full range of mission creation tools that are available as of I12 (branching mission options, event triggered enemy spawns, etc), this is 9 thousand shades of cool. Even more if they let us make cutscenes! If it's just mission dialogue, boss names, and those two minions who stand around saying things, still pretty sweet.

What is the review process going to be like, though? You can't control what other players say, but surely it's going to affect the game's rating if actual content winds up full of profanity and offensive terminology. I don't think even a couple customer service reps could handle it if EVERYONE gets in on the action (and they most certainly will!)

Also, is this coming in I12, or just Soon?

Player generated content is an awesome addition, on both sides: actually creating the content could be yet another enjoyable time sink, and the player-generated arcs gives everyone additional content to enjoy. I only hope the rewards aren't eliminated or even minimized for fear of farming. IMO the dev team seriously overreacts to the threat of farming; everyone is proactively punished to prevent the apparently cardinal sin of farming by having rewards decreased (see: GMs) and yet all the farmers do is shift their focus elsewhere.

At the risk of traveling down a negative path, I don't think the announcement in the form is a good idea. Did the dev team learn nothing from how Powerset Proliferation was handled? A tantalizing but incredibly vague announcement only leads to weeks of speculation and fantasizing, and then the actual details are almost guaranteed to disappoint as it's unlikely it could ever live up to the expectations generated by the speculation and fantasizing.

Custom-made mission arcs!? We can pick the map and the enemies and the objectives and write the clues and dialog and holy crap I'm hyper-ventilat- *passes out*

I bet the player created content will be "flashback only" so that XP farming will not be an issue. Quality of story and not Ease of Completion is what will make this successful.

I can see it now:

-An outdoor mission filled with shoulder to shoulder level 1 minions and a timer. Arrest as many minions as you can before time runs out.

Definately Brutes and not Doms, and the fact that Scrappers have been Scrapping for 4 years(granted they were outshined pre-crits, but still lots of damage and armour for 4 years) and Controllers are just the new flavour with i9(last time I was on Heroes I think there was more Fire/[Kin or Rad] than any other ATs ).

Amazing.

Most important for the game, hopefully word will get out about this to the other MMORPG communities and maybe we'll finally attract a good chunk of new subscribers!

With all this new development, some of this money you guys are making really should be plowed into advertising IMHO.

Here's what I think the devs will do.

They'll create a brand new base editor that's much easier to operate and has about 100 times more items and options than the one we're currently saddled with. Once that's tested and debugged and gone live and further debugged by in-game use then they'll start work on the mission editor version.

The mission editor will essentially be the new base editor sans certain base only things (like storage and teleporters) and with new things added. Specifically spawn point flags and dialogue entry boxes.

One of the biggest problems with player created content will be the huge amount of it. There are two very good ways to cull the gold from the [censored]. One of those ways was already mentioned by Positron: player ratings. The second way is to create a barrier to entry. This makes it more likely that missions will only be created by those people that are really really interested in creating missions. The best barrier to entry would be to package the mission creator in a box and charge real money for it.

Neither one of these things alone will ensure that you will never play in a player created mission that is anything other than garbage. But together they seriously increase a player's access to only the best missions. They also make it much easier for the devs to take only the best and most popular player created content and officially add it to the game.

As an added bonus by doing it this way they will be able to kill two birds with one stone and save time and effort in the process.

While I am excited about the creative aspect custom missions will bring, I have to agree about the Devs' choice of revealing it. People are getting exicted because they'll make the ultimate farms, fight off both Lord Recluse and Statesman in the same arc, and endure a Battle Royale-type encounter with hundreds of Master Illusionists.

In reality, I think it might be CoX's version of Mad Libs...

As I said before, I think it will give players a chance to expand their creativity, but I think that's about it. I doubt you'll be able to select where mobs will be located at or where the important object will be placed. The Devs will put up safeguards to ensure there aren't ubermobs or unique and rare item drops.

But villains! Villains will be able to create missions where they...CONQUER or DESTROY THE WORLD!

The sheer level of awesome this announcement has made active is going to overload reality's (and by proxy, the game servers') capacity and remove the game's past, present, and future instances in a gravity-ripping maelstrom of chaos and fury. Its very existence will be destroyed when this goes live as the force of an infinite number of Internets' "wins" collide together.


That said...I pray for the ability to design AV/EB opponents--could care less about their experience worth, I want the challenge. My DM/Reg i0 Scrapper (forum namesake...should get them to 50 at some point) has wanted to fight their temporally-cloned EM/EA Brute (@global namesake) for quite some time (story-wise, the character existed as, yes, a DM~EM/Regen~EA split in two by a magical organization ). I can imagine neither side would appreciate fighting the other. Granted, I seem to recall there being some sort of issue with how mobs treat their powers which might throw a wrench in this...but man I'd like to finally make the storyline I've had sitting for such a long time.
'Course, even if this fails to be the case, there are plenty of other instances I'd sure like to run. Those missions with the Hero or Villain "teams" have always been highly interesting for me and would like to see more of those (one example being the villain "respec team" during the STF).
