Discussion: Issue 12's Improved Character Creator

The numbers stuff looks really handy. I especially like the level slider thing.

I do have one complaint though: You guys updated character creator, but still haven't added the option to save costumes for later - something that was talked about ages ago? That's what I was really hoping for when I saw that it was improved.

With the Power Information...will there be a way to view this info outside of character creation or levelling up? Possibly more detailed information on your Enhancement Screen or with the hover over on your Powers tab?

[/ QUOTE ]

The detailed power info will be available in the power selection screen, level up screen, respec screens, enhancement screen, and as another tab on the info window for powers.

[/ QUOTE ]
With the slider to see how it scales with level? ZOMG! The coolness... it's... it's too much! I think I need to have a little lie down for awhile.....

You're welcome.

Here's a list of costume sets as shown in the screenshot...

Enforcer Heavy
Enforcer Light
Zombie
Repillian [sic]
Lizard
WereWolf
Tech Bot
Robot
Plant
Armored
Medieval
Tech Banded
Flack
Inscect [sic] Armor
Tech Wired
Steampunk
Stone
Tech Crey
Suit
Tuxedo
Doctor
General
Soldier
Pilot
Biker 1
Biker 2
Jester
Viking
Lowlander
Greek
Pirate
Roman
Samurai
Kung Fu Master
Ninja
Fighter
Boxer

----

(there's at least one other truncated and unreadable, and probably lots more, not shown in the screenshot)

Greek will be the Valentine's unlockables.

Lowlander will most assuredly be based on the Kilt.

I'm surprised there's not a Samurai 1, 2, and 3 sets, for each of the overlays (if there is, this list definitely needs to be alphabetized).

This looks awesome. I think they missed the carnie costume set though.

I love this costume creator change! There has been several times where I've wanted to put the entire set on my character to see how it looks and then make changes from there. But too many times I had trouble finding all the various pieces (some are not where you think they'd be). So I'm very excited about this change.

Like before, I won't be using the Real Number feature because it doesn't interest me, but it's a wonderful feature for those who do like that stuff. And it's neat that they're letting us see how a power grows as we gain levels.

All this is great, just want to toss out my short list of things to make the Creator darn-near perfect:

1. A "Swap Color" button to switch the current primary and secondary color

2. Ability to save and load costumes. This would be extra-special good if you could actually import/export via a text-file, so SGs could distribute SG costumes to their members via website.

3. *Something* needs to be done with Chest Emblems. Sub-menus, multiple categories, something.

What does the Real Numbers windoid show for minions and pets, out of curiousity?

WereWolf? Well I know Lighthouse just said he doesn't know of any other costume options being added, but at least I can hope for a tail.

Of course, there is the back of my brain screaming at me right now, given the date, that there is an April Fool's in here somewhere.

Looks very neat, can't wait to test it

This looks extremely cool.

I'm curious which costume elements make up "Viking," I'll admit. And hrm. I wonder if this means Roman really will be unlockable across a player's characters instead of by characters, since there's no way for the set to show up at initial character creation, otherwise.

OTOH, there's no way to get "Greek" at initial character creation right now, so I may just be reading too much into it.

I see steampunk in the list of costume sets. I wonder does this mean we finnaly get boots and gloves that match the pants and chest for that set O.O

[/ QUOTE ]

Don't we have gloves? Like, the super-big ones?

Boots, though. That'd be nice.

[/ QUOTE ]

good point I forgot about the Giant Robot fist has a steampunk option. but I was refering to something that would go on all the other glove options as well.

and deffinitly the boots

I have to say that this is the greatest thing to have happen to the Co* franchise since... well... I11. There is one improvement I would like to see, both on the blue skin and on the red skin. It's just a minor QoL feature that I think could go a long way to making me the happiest camper in the game. I would like to see a neutral colored (or neutral grey) background behind the avatar to make color selection easier. You see, sometimes the hair color and costume colors are dark enough to blend into this background in a way that makes it hard to tell how well my color choices mesh. If I make a character with dark hair, quite often I cannot see the hair style well enough. What I currently do is choose the style with the hair colored in a bright yellow, then switch the hair color out. A little tedious if you ask me.

I have to say that the character creation screen is wonderful as it is right now, I often find myself logging into the game just to play with it and not even bother to finish up and jump into Outbreak or Breakout.

Thanks Devs for this great addition.

I'm only being half-sarcastic, b/c there really is a disturbing number of people that this appeals to.
...And also b/c alt-tabbing out to C.o.data is a real PitA for a game that uses as many resources as this one, and I already play it in windowed mode! (hey maybe they can do something about that next? ...a little RAM optimization never hurt anyone except for the guys who make their money selling RAM)

[/ QUOTE ]

I don't understand this 'alt-tab' you speak of.. at the Valley house we use ctrl-f12 to task-switch to Firefox on Ubuntu, and at Home, I just mouse over past the edge of the CoH window.

resource wise, CoH is lightweight. Excuse me while I order another 4gb of ram - I'm going to try and play Crysis again.

[/ QUOTE ]

Alt+tab is the keyboard command to switch tasks or programs in Windows. When running the game in full screen mode, assuming you have one monitor you need to use Alt+tab to switch between the game and a browser window

It shows what powers they have. If you click one of the powers in their list, it expands to show all of its detailed information too.

This looks very cool, I'm very excited about this expansion.

Some character creator things I'd love to see added.

1) More user friendly proportion sliders to make it easier to replicate builds across characters. Maybe put a number system on them so you can know your chest size is 75 and your shoulder size is 20. etc.
2) More colors
3) Fill out some of the incomplete costume sets. There are a bunch that could use gloves/boots, etc. My personal pet peeve is the glossy tights (tights 2 I think) not available in boots or gloves. I'll put a few more tails in here to for the werewolf set and such.
4) Perhaps just maybe kinda hopefully, the ability to adjust heights and body builds between costumes????

very cool change to be able to choose the costume set

the detailed info I don't care about but won't hurt me

Please use this thread to discuss the following announcement.

Issue 12: Midnight Hour, the next free expansion for City of Heroes includes a number of refinements for the game. Among those improvements is a streamlined Character Creator including additional power information and easy costume selection.

Click here to read all the details!

[/ QUOTE ]

Does this by any chance include a fix to the wing colors + super group mode bug?

[/ QUOTE ]

The kilts also have this bug

[/ QUOTE ]

LOTS of costume options, especially mask/face/detail options (trench coats too) have this bug. I've tried reporting it and got absolutely nowhere despite pages of detailed explanations with the customer service team. They eventually gave me a free costume token which of course did not, in any way, address the issue. Frustrated, after days and days of trying, I gave up on this.

To me, it's probably the single most annoying bug in the game.

Back on topic, the costume organizer is nice, though as an obsessed mix-&-matcher, I'll prob never use it (and I'm afraid it will lead to less costume diversity). The powers detail button is very nice, especially the slider for level adjustment.

Holy crap. Nice job.

I have to wonder how different things would have been if these features had been in from the start.

Great stuff, I'm loving the push to make the game more user-friendly, especially for new players. Lack of information leading to uninformed decisions has always been my number one gripe about the game.
