I still think they can be made a bit stronger without worry of PVP exploits ( because you know that's what castle is worried about).
[/ QUOTE ]
Everything in this game is about balance (or at least tries to be).
If they made these pets less fragile in any way they would likely reduce the buffs they provide too.
[/ QUOTE ]
Either the buffs are overpowered to be practically on all the time for a back row character, or they arent overpowered to be on all the time for a front row character.
[/ QUOTE ]
Actually if I had to guess the "exploitable" nature Castle is talking about is the fact that these buffs are apparently team oriented. An unkillable team buff would be pretty powerful, obviously too powerful as far as the Devs are concerned. It'd almost be like a Vet based variant of a zero END cost Leadership pool power.
Once again balance is key.
My bet is if they made these pets unkillable they'd make the buffs NON-team oriented at the very least.
[/ QUOTE ]
Once again... either its OK for all AT's to have it, or its not OK for some to have it. Right now, its actually imbalanced.
Lower the % and make them perma if PVE is an issue. Ban them from PVP zones if PVP is the concern. Right now they seem like a hassle for some to get the benefit, and a freebie for others.
I suppose a Rikti Chimp would have been out of the question - hopefully any future pets will reflect not only player themes abut the previous pets' themes as well.

Okay, so out of 8 pets, why are there only 2 different buffs?
[/ QUOTE ]
Originally, there were 2 pets: The Faeries. Then someone (may even have been me, I don't remember) brought up the fact that Faeries won't match everyones concepts and so, the Wisps were born. Then, someone suggested the Drones for Tech types and at the last minute the Oscillators were tossed in. All told, a more classic example of Feature Creep you will never find!
So, since there were only two pets originally, there were only 2 powers made. I didn't have time to make 6 more powers to match the new entities.
As for why they are so fragile, let's just say if they were at all "tough" I could exploit them horrendously. So, they are fragile. They CAN be kept alive if you are a ranged AT, but melee types will have a hard time of it.

No good. Any hit will pretty much kill it outright (unless they're protected by the 1-shot rule?). Now start thinkin grant invis and you're on to something...
Hooray for feature creep!

LoL wut?
Lookin at the numbers so far, 5 of these things stacked together wouldn't even measure up to the Protection/REC that 1 layer of Rad-Infect & Accel-Metab provides. For soloers (especially Melees), they won't even be Worth summoning. The most "Use" anyone will get out of these weak buggers is for putting their floaty E-Dilz on display in Atlas Park.
In real PvE (and PvP especially)...these things are ANYTHING but a "combat pet".
And "organized Teams" would get BETTER bonuses by just taking Manuevers+CJ.

I'm glad you didn't, and hope you won't even if you do get more time. Anything that allows me to choose the way I look without having to sacrifice the way I perform is a win in my book.
[/ QUOTE ]
Agreed. This gives me some flexibility. The Nemesis Staff/Blackwand option didn't. That one feels more like I'm assigned a power rather than getting to choose which one I want if I want the bonus.
just read the last 29 pages of people crying about the latest vet rewards. Am I to assume that it would be too hard to code them like Kheldians? Meaning that their defense/resistance would be based on the caster.
So that if a Tank summoned one they could survive more than 2 seconds in melee and if a Blaster summoned one they would be much weaker, but survive at range.

I'd much rather have 2 buffs spread across 8 pets that work for most every Origin / AT type then 8 different buffs potentially attached to a pet skin you don't like / want but is too good to pass up.

Hey don't lol at me.
I didn't create these pets the way they are.
I'm just commenting on them based on what I know and what the Rednames have said.
As far as how useful these "combat pets" are it's actually going to vary quite a bit. I run several ranged oriented characters who, in big teams, rarely take ANY damage of their own. Think about that: if I can run a ranged blaster who takes no damage then she'll be able have these pets providing the ENTIRE team these buffs pretty much all the time. If you've been reading the posts from people like Mastermind Zero you'll see that there are some ATs which'll actually benefit quite nicely from these even if Melee'rs don't.
You are right about there being plenty of ways to get more buffing from non-Vet methods. That -is- supposed to be the point isn't it? Once again Vet powers are meant to be "nice-to-haves" not "must haves". They should NOT really be all that powerful ever. On the other hand on the right teams being able to have 4 or 5 of these pets up and running almost constantly will certainly be within the realm of possibility despite how fragile they are. It's teams like these that Castle is worried about.

Clearly you do have a valid point about different ATs getting differing amounts of expected benefit from these new Vet pets at least as far as the buffs go. I still think clever players will find uses for these pets regardless of their ATs or playstyles. I have plenty of melee oriented characters AND non-melee ones and I'm expecting to use these pets in different ways for different situations.
But to apply a bit of perspective to this issue perhaps what you are suggesting for the 48 month pets (making them unkillable for instance) is actually something that might be applied to the 60 month Vet pets.
I make that prediction based on the following:
<ul type="square">[*]The Devs planned (at least at the beginning) to have at least 60 months worth of Vet Awards.[*]We have 36 month Vet pets which are non-combat holograms.[*]We have 48 month Vet pets which provide combat buffs but are very fragile.[/list]It MIGHT be possible that we will have even stronger 60 month Vet pets which provide combat buffs from an UNKILLABLE pet or some such.
Basically what I'm saying is that maybe the Devs actually LIKE your idea but they are saving it for the final Vet Pet award. Maybe your idea is not technically overpowered but it'll be limited/reserved only to 5 year vets.
Just something to consider.

I know I provided this message to Cricket on 11/2006 and she responded that she passed it on.
"Cricket,
In looking at the vet reward non-combat pets the complaint is that the pets are all "evil" making it hard for upstanding heroes to have them from a roleplay POV.
I think you could partialy solve this problem by using/adding/including the sprites and will o'wisps (found in Croatoa) as non-combat pets. I am sure they would be very popular. "
Don't you dare steal my idea Castle

The people who have been here for 48 months have paid MORE over that time than people who have been here for 1, 17, 24, etc. months. So WE'RE paying for the vet rewards. Lord, the feeling of entitlement among some on these boards is just frightening.
[/ QUOTE ]
I agree completely.. folks who have been here longer are special due to the amount of money they've paid. Right? Ok that's just silly. But honestly they have paid more money than the average player... they've enjoyed the game longer so you can argue they've gotten more out of that too but whatever.
What I honestly think NCSoft should do is allow others to buy time. If you want to buy an extra series of months, you should be able to. This would be good for NCSoft and good for the players as it would give them what they want if they're willing to pay for it. The only ones I can see having a problem with this would be those who want to see their vet rewards as a special status symbol.

OMG, the devs hate Melee!!!!!

I hope Willpower, the Mace fixes, Ice Melee fixes and Rage fix are examples of how much they hate us. I'll take all that type of hate I can get.

What if you want to buy an extra series of months but you can't afford to?
Maybe a given person can afford to pay the monthly fee but nothing extra.
How is this "pay-extra-for" Awards system fair to that person?
Beyond that the -only- problem I have with this idea would be this would make these "pay-extra-for" Awards not Veteran Awards. There's nothing wrong with "pay-extra-for" Awards in theory but if the Devs had wanted to give us those that's what we would've gotten in the first place.

Honestly, it's the old cleche...
"Give a man a fish and he'll complain that it's not fresh. Teach a man to fish and he'll say, 'Why are you teaching me to fish, you gave me a fish last week'."
All the Vet Rewards are awesome, because we are getting them. We spend, like, up to $16 a month on this game and the Devs are actually saying, "Thanks for Playing". I've been playing since week 3-ish, on my own account, and the only thing I can compare to the Vet Rewards were some Lamer key chains I got with "that other game". And the key chains broke within a year, or less.
listen, kiddies, being a "Critic" does not mean you criticize everything, it means you critique by look at the pros and cons of an issue and list them. Saying, "these Vet Rewards suxor 'cuz it ain't 'God Mode'" is just as lame as it sounds.

Thugs/Traps Masterminds each with 6 Henchmen, Gang War for 10 more, FF Generator, Acid Mortar, 2 Seeker Drones, non-combat Vet Pet, and Dam/Res Vet Pet. That's 8 players and 176 pets, though granted only 168 of those are targetable. Too bad mobs don't have limits on the number of things they can hit.
