  1. Well it sounds nice in theory, this new content sounds like to me:

PUG turnstile group will create unbalanced teams (oh joy)

Another slap to Controllers and Dominators will have a significant portion of their powers made useless or negated making them 2nd class citizens once again as there will be a significant portion of the mobs that cannot be controlled.

Low population servers will really be hurt by these type of missions, especially non-prime time.

A Player(s) have to take one for the team and sit out of some of the battles (looks like some kinda dimensional shift power) Oh wait that is the new job for controllers. Starting BTF team need sacrificial lamb! Only controllers/dominators need apply<Sarcasm off>

Killing 2 AVs within 10 seconds....yea that is going to be easy, and maybe it will be once everyone is tricked out incarnate powers but it sounds like only dedicated professional players will be able to pull this off. Casual TF players can just forget about it.

I dunno this stuff sounds like more of the same of catering to the uber guilds.
  2. working on getting a hero merit, and I ran out of tip missions. Been killing tons of 20+ mobs, ran a few police scanner missions, not a single tip has dropped? No patch notes up yet, so not sure if they nerfed drop rate or introduced bug?
  3. Been playing my Stormer a long time. O2 Boost is better than gale for the times you PUG. Torrent is superior to gale, so if you want KB as damage mitigation that is the superior choice.

Your a defender, and with the free health/stamina/fitness line I would pick up Assault for + damage it provides.

The key, although it is end intensive, is to drop as many freezing rains as you can. For this you need recharge. 2-3 Slotted hasten is worth it, even though they nerfed it so it no longer benefits Lightning Storm as it did in the past.

Forget Moonbeam, it was useful in the early days, but now not-so-much. A hastened dark blast will get your more bang for your buck, especially if you can afford to slot a hold or buildup proc in your fast attack.

Lifedrain is the reason why you take dark. Believe me you will need healing and this is your best source. Slot for Acc because it is likely you will need it when you need it and can't afford a miss.

    Have fun!
  4. Thanks for the help D

Good point about the Psychic APP, and I have had it in the past when slots were tighter, but I wanted to go more thematic now that I had some slots open up, so was considering the electric APP.

Unfortunately the hold in that set is at a higher level requiring a filler power (Thunderstrike). As filler powers go it seems ok.

Since I am always hovering, I never saw the need for KB protection.

I did pick up to chance for resistance debuffs (Achile's Heel) to replace my 2 -rchg debuffs (one for Freezing Rain and the other for my other aoe Nightfall. What do you think about that?

After you help I think I should be able to get at least the Numina +recovery to help with End and put it in health.
  5. Thanks for the 411, I was not aware of the alignment rewards. Looks like tip missions are more than just fun, but give you a means to get the rare recipes.

It would explain the cost increases somewhat as it is very "farmable".
  6. My goals...hmmm well I solo mostly and do PUGs. My guild has left for greener pastures.

I would like to try task forces, but don't have lots of time for long missions back to back.

I don't PvP since they nerfed hurricane, got tired of energy stalkers jumping through my hurricane and 2 shotting me.

I was just wanted to build a strong all around avatar that can contribute and solo at +1.

I had vengeance once and I didn't find it all that useful. The healers tended to raise the dead teammate before I could activate it. I will consider it so yea I took Thunderstrike as a filler power to get the hold in the APP

End does seem to be an issue solo. And my thought was try to go to the damage buff for the alpha incarnate slot.

The other issue is the stealth IO worth it in hover? I pretty much run Steamy Mist all the time.

My slotting has in general been dictated by my low levels of influence, and the prices on the market now seem even more insane.
  7. Need advice on slotting/powers on respec this is what I am thinking/have currently. Not hung up on getting purples and likely could not afford.

    Duo Advice

Getting a 2nd account for my 9 year old son. He want to duo team and is thinking of a fire/fire scrapper.

So my question what is the best partner for him? Ice corrupter? Storm/Ice defender? Ice Controller?

Any suggestions welcome for good duos or fire/ice duos.
  9. Combat Jumping + Medicine Pool (Self Heal) with a few interrupt reductions actualy work very well for Doms and make you very team friendly.

Big thing with Doms is to be very selective with the various imobilizes, they are huge aggro magnets since they do a little bit of damage too!
  10. Thanks for the help

  11. No go on defragging and moving files. Still time out and load times if I don't yime out are insanely long and this running in performance mode....

Looks like this computer is not worthy of the new issue, and will likely have to cancel my subscription after 6 years....
  12. On the test server I often have extremely long loading times, and frequently time out back to sign in page. Sure I have an older computer, but I can run regular servers ok. Virus checkers and the like report no problems.

    Running xp service pack 3
    Nvidia 7600 GS vid card

Any help would be appreciated as this is a game killer.

  13. A couple of things

You will need to do damage, your a dominator. The good thing is things like Mesmerize does damage.

Six slot Dominate as soon as you can!

I am not a fan of Mass Hypnosis, especially at low levels. I like to fight while hovering, and since you will need Stamina, I like to pick up hover & swift just to make life in the early days a little easier.

If you hope to perma dom then you will need hasten at some point, but it is not all that important.

In the 20s I went with the healing chain and found it to be invaluable Aid Other/Aid Self is worth it for a Dom and for your tandem.

Early on focus on slotting Mesmerize or Levitate, since your running with a stalker I would go with Mesmerize.

I am not as familiar with the Psi secondary so take with a grain of salt but this is how I would build for a duo

  14. I have a lot of fun when I team with a Stalker with my Mind/Ice Dom. I think the key is the mind set since you have a confuse, sleep, and a hold. I would stay away from energy as a secondary, and you will have a lot of fun.
  15. Shadow_Stone

    Uber veterans

    63 Month Vet.

Believe it or not, I only have one level 50. Since my SG left after about a year or two, I basically play PUGS and solo, and as a father of a busy 3 I play at most a couple of hours a week.

I have done a handful of the task forces, I just don't have the time to play 4-5 hours straight, and that is my one real beef with CoX is the long task forces, (That and the lack of a diversity in maps...I am so sick of that warehouse where you have to go upstairs then down to the big room..you know the one....)

I started in Beta with Shadowstone (my namesake). All of my toons have strong stories and concepts. He was a Energy/Invul tank that just never worked for me. I haven't the heart to delete him. Anyway, after a while it was evident that he was not for me or my play style (I do a lot of soloing). I created a variant Shadow King was a Dark/Regen Scrapper. I was happily playing him for a long time. Back when Regen really sucked, then it got uber for a while, and then comes CoV. A key concept was that I always played stealthed. Around that time came the great Regen nerfing + they added the limitations on slotting, and then made stealth worthless! (At the time we didn't know about Stalkers & hide) and rather than disallowing the stealth pool on Stalkers, they nerfed Stealth so the actual def was suppressed! The whole character concept was just flushed. I was POed. I almost walked at that point. I had invested a good two years into this guy, MOG sucked and now this???? I actually had a few good conversations with a dev and I believe I (and several other convinced him to do something about stealth so the nerf was not so harsh.

However, it still hurts to play him and he sits at level 41 or 42 still with SOs. I recognize it is not a rational thought an otherwise "well adjusted adult" should have, but he truly has become a symbol of a dark time in CoH.

After that I went in a different direction. I started playing a Storm/Dark Defender, Everwind. He is my favorite character and my only 50. He feels super to me, he feels powerful. He feels heoric in every sense of the word. I used to play him a lot, and had a lot of fun with him in the PvP areas until they nerfed Thunderclap and Hurricane to the point it was a worthless power and an exercise in frustration to have your major defensive power be totally worthless. At the time containment was added to Controllers and Storm Controllers outclassed Storm defenders easily. So I sadly left the PvP fields forever never to look back.

When CoX came out I played at that with Mind/Ice Dom who I have recently been playing a lot as the changes to the Dominators have made it a much more enjoyable class for the most part. I more inclined to feel the need to feel heroic so unless I was playing with friends I stayed away from Cox between the frustrations the Doms and the hero issues.

In between I made a Storm/Illus controller (Thunderbright) and a Sonic Blaster I am very fond of (Sonic Falcon). Thunderbright is not a challenge he is so powerful, I haven't played him much and he sits around 38 along with Sonic Falcon.

My middle son loves City, especially designing heroes and villains. I think we have made and deleted hundreds of heroes and villains, got them up to level 10-12 or so, and then went on to make another.

It has been a good ride.

I am not sure how much longer I am going to last, but it is hard to replace and still enjoying flying through the city with my cape flowing in the wind, seeing a hero or bad guy get knocked to the ground in an epic battle.
  16. Several Points to make, first what is "better" for you and play style? The game and archetypes are mature enough you can enjoy it and be successful with almost every combination (although a soloing FF Defender is going to have a very challenging and tough road).

Clearly the whole archetype system is going by the wayside. So don't get too hung up on that anymore. I am not sure that is a good thing, but that is the ways things are going.

Your character has two lives (prior to 35) and after 35 or so. The ride to 35 used to be very long and power selections and when powers opened had a much more pronounced effect on game play. Now you can level pretty quickly if you want to so this has also been minimized. Sooner or later you will get all your shiny toys. If your not a patient person then by all means figure out what "shinys" you want the most and go that way.

When push comes to shove, this game has always been about killing things. You kill things by doing damage, and in many peoples eyes the faster you damage the better. Is this what you want?

Defenders with one noteable exception (Empathy) are a very mixed bag and with all of the power proliferation have become generally outclassed in both damage and damage/risk avoidance. They are the most balanced of the archetypes, but the game does not value that anymore. It tends to value the extremes, especially weighted on the damage side of the house (see earlier comment). Also, in many ways inspirations can do what a defender can do more reliably (buffs/heals/awaken).

To me there are two types of defenders, Empathy Defenders and everyone else. All the other defenders are variants of damage mitigation/damage boosting. Defenders have one advantage IMHO and in one way only. They are fantastic damage multipliers. But only when there several in a group. Get 2-3 Defenders in a group and they are going accelerate your damage and reduce your risks significantly. Storm is a perfect example of this. It can give good damage (Tornado, Thunderstorm), good damage boosting Freezing Rain, Damage avoidance (Freezing Rain/Snow Storm/Gale/Hurricane). (Don't get me started on Thunderclap....)

As was mentioned, the Defender inherit is terrible. This really has no true effect on game play what-so-ever in any meaningful way. I have yet to see a battle in the late stages of the game where there was a long, drawn out battle where endurance or lack of endurance was a determining or influential aspect of the success or failure of a battle. Thank goodness we had a defender on the team, otherwise we would have been toast! If it wasn't for that defender finishing the fight because he was the only one that had any endurance left, we would have all died.....yea right! Happens that way all the time!

So, if your a constant teamer, and the journey is more important than the race, and your not all hung up on being the biggest, baddest, cape on the block, go with a defender. You will have fun I am sure. Once you get Freezing Rain slotted you will be doing good damage and have reduced your risk significantly.

If you want to watch things die, and quickly, you don't mind dieing a little more frequently or every so often for a glorious cause or for the power, then I would go with a corrupter. Scourge, while not reliable on a case by case basis is a huge damage boost and will only be made better by your secondary augmentation powers. You will be more closely aligned with the real purpose of game success which is killing things quick.

    Good Luck!
  17. I run Mind/Ice and have to agree, Mind plays a lot different than many of the sets. It is a very single target set with a few emergency buttons. So, like Ice, Mind/Elec would be a good solo dom, safe and slow.

Mass Hypnosis is largely worthless. Sleep (mesmerise) is a very good power when soloing and for boss fights.

Terror is a very good power for groups, it offers very good damage mitigation and can recharge very quickly. Levitate is an under-rated damage/soft control power.

Seems like if you wanted to run a Mu character Mind/Elec would be a great RP angle.

You want to run AOE Fire and Plant are the way to go.
  18. I was curious on whether cloak of darkness obscures the graphical effect of lightinings attacks? Lightning Rod is one of the coolest attacks I have ever played with (got the bump on test server).

Slotting is always tricky unless you spend a lot of time focusing on the markets. I would just go with IOs and frakenslotting to your weaknesses. The hard one that is important is the minus kb IO which is always very expensive. A work around is fighting while hovering.

I am not a fan of hasten these days but may necessary if you don't work on getting some recharge on your set IOs.
  19. If removing the fog of war allows me to find those %$*^ glowies in Oranbega then I will be one happy Vet
  20. My big issue with this and most of the other task forces is that if your not the group leader, you don't get any of the story! You really don't know what is going on, npc dialogue is often lost in the fight spam.

I had no idea why all the AVs were in suspended animation. Were they prisoners? Were they robots? I had no idea or what the significance of the attack on city hall and the time capsule.

Quite frankly, considering the lightness of this issue, I expected more than standard maps, and same 5th column mobs. Seems to me if you were defeated you would want to come back with something new to improve your odds...
  21. In the original design the reason storm defenders did not get a self heal was because of the strong melee protection hurricane offered. When hurricane was nerfed + the problems with the game engine that allows for jousting and totally circumventing its defense, it would only be reasonable to suggest as a balance issue if they are not going to un-nerf hurricane than 02 boost should allow self targeting.

No other repel power was nerfed that could accomplish the same "problem" that hurricane had in PVP. The nerf was unwarrented and was largely done because of stalkers IMHO. They feel it is their inalienable right to kill any toon easily and without needing strategy or tactics. or say a teammate.
  22. I know I provided this message to Cricket on 11/2006 and she responded that she passed it on.

    "Cricket,

In looking at the vet reward non-combat pets the complaint is that the pets are all "evil" making it hard for upstanding heroes to have them from a roleplay POV.

I think you could partialy solve this problem by using/adding/including the sprites and will o'wisps (found in Croatoa) as non-combat pets. I am sure they would be very popular. "

Don't you dare steal my idea Castle
  23. Thank you for taking my suggestion for the wisps over a year ago. Thanks! Appreciate you guys listening.

  25. For some strange reason I felt like I just broke up with a girlfriend, but my friends are all saying that's ok you will find a new, and better one...

I have been around since the days when City of Heroes went silent and they totaly redesigned and came up with the new AT system. I remember the E3 video where they announced the new game design and saw flying for the first time.

As much as I disagreed with Jack on many of his nerf decisions, I knew he was a comic geek through and through and it was a labor of love. I really find it hard to believe he gave up his baby....

For folks that have been around since the begining, I feel a little cheated. The annoucement should of came from you Jack, even in your reduced role. Your silence really hurts, not even a good bye, thanks for the memories (sigh).

I hope NCSoft is successful as captain of the ship. It shows a strong commitment to bring the creative team over. I am sure all the new folks are trying to figure out how to fill out their time cards with a new system and wondering how to transfer my insurance, etc.

My advice to you is be carefull of your promises, recognize uncertainity will result in fear and trepidation, keep involving your stakeholders (us) in your thoughts and decisions, and keep true to what the game is at its heart and we will stick around.
