As for why they are so fragile, let's just say if they were at all "tough" I could exploit them horrendously. So, they are fragile. They CAN be kept alive if you are a ranged AT, but melee types will have a hard time of it.

Agreed. And that was the first thought I had when the info was leaked. Faeries? How am I going to make that fit say my robot character? Thanks for the additional aesthetic choices, but keeping the buffs the same. Perfect.
Anyway, otherwise we'd figure out which is best and you'd only see one pet 90% of the time anyway. Kind of like what happened with the vast majority of us taking Sands of Mu vs. Ghost Slaying Axe.

I think it's GREAT that there are so many to choose from, while at the same time limiting the buffs to basically two flavors.
Having several pets to select from means that they can fit more character concepts (always a good thing). Having limited buffs available means that you don't have to choose between the buff you want and the concept of the pet.

My next SuperTeam will be all Fire/Dev Blasters.
48 MONTH VETS ONLY
We'll rely on stacked Smoke Grenade (28% ToHit debuff) and Rec/Def Vet pet buffs (20% Defense) to drop mobs to the base 5% chance to hit us (and our pets). We can go Staminaless too, thanks to the pets. Take Medicine (Aid Other) and Leaping (CJ and Acro) to deal with lucky hits. Assault for more damage. This is gonna be easy.
We'll call the team the Super Reflex Blasters.
Maybe one of these days. I should get them when all the other "been here since CoH started" people do.
Then again, maybe a group of 8 Fire/Fire Tankers with the Dam/Res pets. They'd have nearly capped Damage Resistance to everything, and they'd do huge amounts of AoE damage themselves.
Thugs/Traps Masterminds each with 6 Henchmen, Gang War for 10 more, FF Generator, Acid Mortar, 2 Seeker Drones, non-combat Vet Pet, and Dam/Res Vet Pet. That's 8 players and 176 pets, though granted only 168 of those are targetable. Too bad mobs don't have limits on the number of things they can hit.
FYI, all the auto powers I know of have a 10 second activation period. That means they tic every 10 seconds and give you 10 seconds worth of effect. Even if your pet dies, you have up to 10 seconds of buff left.

On a serious note: its a shame I cant see the future. I picked the 5th column pet with my macer, had I known the next pet (or that there was going to be another pet) was going to accommodate clockwork design but no 5th column designs, I would had picked the clockwork non combat pet instead.
I guess there is no chance to get a mekman added to the list, will there? Also, what about some natural/mutant creations? Like DE monsters? You guys keep doing tech/magic and ignore the entire mutant aspects.

Take the red drone one or the red whisp. These are obviously external, so can fit the *thematics* of your characters history in any shape or form.

I still think they can be made a bit stronger without worry of PVP exploits ( because you know that's what castle is worried about).

Everything in this game is about balance (or at least tries to be).
If they made these pets less fragile in any way they would likely reduce the buffs they provide too.

I think that they were going for hovering pets, and I don't think there's an appropriate 5th model for that. The Power Drone should do for a mechanical model at least. I'll probably pick it for my alts that have the clockwork pet anyway since it'll probably be less intrusive.

Either the buffs are overpowered to be practically on all the time for a back row character, or they arent overpowered to be on all the time for a front row character.

Actually if I had to guess the "exploitable" nature Castle is talking about is the fact that these buffs are apparently team oriented. An unkillable team buff would be pretty powerful, obviously too powerful as far as the Devs are concerned. It'd almost be like a Vet based variant of a zero END cost Leadership pool power.
Once again balance is key.
My bet is if they made these pets unkillable they'd make the buffs NON-team oriented at the very least.
