Positron's gamertag is easily visible on his blog.

Yeah, I need to post something... maybe you guys can give me ideas for topics of discussion.

I ended up buying 36 Battle Droids from starwars.com when they had a "moving sale". The guy packing the order obviously knew I was building a droid army and made sure each and every one was the "clean" version. For a while I had them (and my other 6 battle droids) pinned to the wall of my office. That many battle droids boxed in one place is an impressive sight to behold.

Now they sit in a bin in the rafters of my garage. One day Positot will inherit the Droid Army...

[/ QUOTE ]

I picked up a large number of battle droids myself, but not quite that many. That reminds me of the time some European guy was complaining on some colletor's forum about the fact that the European release of the Episode 1 figures came with a random battle droid, instead of those horrendous "voice chips" we Americans got stuck with. He was immediately inundated with hundred of offers so trade him crateloads of the voice chips for his extras...

How about looking at the progressive change in superhero culture away from the classical 'perfectly good' heroes to the rising popularity of the anti-hero in todays comics and films.

Are people bored of heroes who are absolutely perfect model citizens? Or have writers simply jumped on the bandwagon which started with Punisher and Venom and never looked back?

You have to enable comments before it qualifies as discussion. I thought the post on validation was good, although I wanted to ask - how do all those points or changes to your character really validate your time, when you consider that some day, they will atrophy to irrelevance? Like I have a bunch of level 50s, and billions upon billions of influence worth of goodies. Will it matter 5, 10, or 20 years from now? Clearly not. In fact, if I can't sell them, then the value is purely intrinsic since it cannot be converted to anything else. Levels, wealth, and so on in CoH, for example, do not enable or translate into gains in any other part of life. So they are non-transitive, and non-liquid. In other words, it is pure entertainment. Empty time spent for enjoyment only. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with some of that, but like you, I have a child and not as much time as when I was young, and I remember somehow managing a job, hours every night of coding on a MUD we were building, and still having plenty of time to go out for movies and meals and time with friends.

Still, the post struck a chord.

Yeah, I heard about the powers designer opening. I don't meet two of the requirements:

At least 1 shipped AAA title
Refrain from calling other forum posters "blithering idiots."

Also, Mountain View is too long of a work commute from Honolulu. And I hear Castle has a clause in his contract that allows him to call any powers designer hired after him "Igor."

Just to be clear, the phonetics on that would be something like "Eye-gore".

I am sad to hear about the move. I applied for the Windows Administrator job, and got an initial interview. However the HR person indicated that they planned to hire the position in time to have them on board for the opening of the new studio. The new studio is now open which means, I suppose, that I didn't get the job. :/

*sigh*

The fact that it matters to me now, will still matter to me then, even if the servers themselves no longer exist.

Even in a pickup game of basketball, most people keep score, even though the score might not be especially meaningful once the game is over.

Besides, I believe "the score" is the immediate short term validation for playing right now. The validation you'll have twenty years from now, if you have any, is likely to be that you have fond memories of playing. You won't, by definition, need short-term incentive-style validation like XP for a game you can't play anymore because it doesn't exist, just like most people can't kill that Outcast over there for the potential validation of one day having a fond memory of it. Validation is somewhat relative to context in this regard.

Interesting hypothetical question about validation within the context of what Positron discusses in his blog. Suppose the game were ending tomorrow, and with that, the devs offered all players an option: for some nominal price, they would sell you a DVD with your character (or characters). Everything they ever did, everything they ever earned, all of their current statistics: all the data they possess about your character, in some readable fashion. Would you buy it? Is the data meaningful if the game no longer exists? If you would, does that say something about whether or not the things you earn in the game have some validation-oriented meaning with or without the game's actual existence. In other words, influence definitely has no worth outside the confines of the game. But does earning influence have some value outside the game? I tend to think it does, to at least some degree.
