What NOT to do in CoX
Just spent the last day, off and on, going through this. Some really great comments!
For my two bits:
Do not call someone an (insert appropriate insult here) because they have a build you think is poorly done or has powers you think are useless. There may be a reason other than inexperience.
A lot of the times, I select powers based not on what will maximize my capabilities, but on what is appropriate for the character concept. For me, concept is everything.
I've tried designing characters around what some consider highly effective builds, and I usually wind up dumping them. Why? While I'm not one who role-plays in game (I love role-playing, but just can't get into it online), I'm much happier with a character that follows a concept than one that has powers just because.
Just found this thread for the first time, and haven't read it all yet, so sorry if this was already brought up.
It goes something like this:
Incoming tell of "want to join a <fill in name of TF/mission here> team?".
You reply with "Sure, send me an invite" a few seconds later.
You then get this: "Team is full".
If you know, or are pretty sure that your team will be full momentarily, don't keep sending out invites/tells. Get it sorted out first, THEN send out some more invites/tells. I've been getting this a fair bit lately, and it drives me up the wall, especially when its for a team doing something that I would like to do, or still need to do on a specific character.

I am guilty of this far to often, only cuse i wait bout 2-3 mins then start sending out tells again and if the first person i sent a tell to doesnt respond within the first 2-3 mins I will continue to shoot out tells to the next 3 people until i fill the team. But if that first person sends a tell 4 mins later and thiers 5 other people that havent responded yet, Its first come first serve and ill reply once the team is full "Srry full up mabey a spot will open in a bit" If that bugs you turn on /hide and possibly try finding a team via broadcast.
Important do not:
Do NOT send a tell to someone that has 'no blind invites' and then immediately follow it up with a team invite without waiting for their replies.
If they are playing a blaster, they probably have a very good reason for saying 'no blind invites' because that pop-up in thne middle of the screen CAN and HAS gotten them killed. It has gotten me killed, since I play so much on the edge that even a moment of distraction can spell the difference between victory and faceplant.

At least you wait a few minutes. My issue is when they don't wait more than a few seconds. I mean, why send a tell at all if you're not going to wait for a reply before filling a spot/team? And it doesn't bother me to the point of wanting to /hide, it would just be nice of those who do this to give me (and others of course) the benefit of a period of time to reply and/or ask a question or two. Waiting 5 seconds isn't enough time by far. 2-3 minutes as you do, is more than enough, and I'd understand that fully. I use about the same amount of time when recruiting for a team to be honest. But at least I wait a couple of minutes, not a couple of seconds.
And for the record, I've never once used broadcast to find a team. I pride myself on being a decent teammate and as such, I usually have people coming to me to join their team, rather than the other way around.

Do not assume that, just because I have 5 purple sets in my main, I will give you 20 million inf.
Do not say CoX sucks and continue to play it for another year just so you can continue to complain how much it sucks.
Do not assume that a female character in a bikini with a katana and double D's is a woman in real life. She's not.
Don't worry about XP debt. It really isn't that bad.
Don't play on Liberty and complain about how dead it is, when Freedom is available for you to group on to your heart's content.
After ready 39 full pages of "what not to do in CoX", I'm positive we have almost enough people on our boards to completely turn off any and all friends I've persuaded to "Try this game! It's fun!" to ever playing this game again.
It's always comforting to know there are so many "elitists" out there that have absolutely no patience for "n00bs."
Thanks, guys. You rock.

Do NOT tell people how cool it is that your bathroom is right next to your computer and you can still play and...take care of business.

I also quite enjoyed the sarcastic remark right after mine. That one was good!

Don't assume that a character isn't a woman in real life because they are playing a character that you don't think a real woman would play. Seriously, I play a wide variety of characters, all female as I am myself. Women have as varied personalities and like as men. We don't all roll up the same sort of toon.

Although there is a fairly reliable axiom that says the larger a female character's chest slider is, the less likely it's being played by a real woman.
Freedom: Blazing Larb, Fiery Fulcrum, Sardan Reborn, Arctic-Frenzy, Wasabi Sam, Mr Smashtastic.
If you do not want to join my team or farm, a simple 'No thank you' will suffice. I always ask in complete sentences and thank a person for their time. Please don't lecture me on how my one snake farm is ruining the server's RP. I never allow first ever characters to be power levelled and I'm not going INF NAO KEKEKEKE. I simply have friends who like help and I enjoy punching snakes for Indiana Jones.
Point: Be polite and respect that there are different ways of playing a game. Having a farm mish doesn't mean I'm a full time farmer. I enjoy RP, TFs and more when I'm not putzing about being a wiseacre.
Edit: On the bust thing, yeah, it's true. It's usually super skinny and uber busty or SUPER BIG and super busty. Proportional is fine, but I always want to punt the 4ft tall characters with uber melons and see if they bounce back up like one of those toy things.

When I'm on a character who does this, I turn on the "Not Accepting Invites!" Flag, Go on "Hide from Searches" and "Do not Accept Invites". I tell my SG that I'm going under the radar, and to send me a tell for me to open up.
But yes, the main premise of the problem is incredibly annoying.

Some really good stuff in this thread btw.
Let me just add this one.
Don't make a hero (or villain) with a dot (.) at the begining, middle, or at the end of your name. Is there anything sadder in COX that seeing some level 50 running around named ".Hellspawn" or "Ice.Master" or "Powerguy."? No.
It shows a SERIOUS lack of creativity on your part, not to mention an indication that you choose the path of least resistance. Not good traits for a hero OR a villain worthy of respect or fear.
You simply won't be taken seriously by serious players. Take ten minutes up front, and make your hero/villain truely yours. You're going to be spending alot of time with them.

Do not offer unsolicited advice on a persons build, in which you refer to them as an idiot for picking a certain power or set. Don't get me wrong questions and discussions are fine, but if one more person tells my solo eng/eng blaster that he is an idiot for taking the medicine pool...... He took it because he soloes almost exclusively. There is an interupt in it so it can be used in combat and it works really well thank you.
If everyone had the UBER build, it would be a lot less interesting.
[/ QUOTE ]
This reminds me of what happens in other MMO's as well that allow inspecting. If i wanted advice I'd ask. If I'm a higher level than you and I've soloed to there and you have the gonads to try to tell me how I should play... don't be surprised when you get ignored.
Why do people in general think that doing something differently than they do makes it wrong... It gets very annoying.

Playing with a bunch of ex-WoW'ers was really, really tedious. They stated that only pure weirdos refer to each other by toon names. Is this a CoX-WoW Cultural Barrier?
[/ QUOTE ]
I've noticed this in many mmos. I go by toon name. I don't need people to know my name, I don't need to know your name. I refer to people by their main toon's name or the toon I first met them playing on. I will not ask for your name and I don't want people to ask for mine. Inokis is all anyone needs to know.

Don't tell the stormie he can't use Hurricane or steamy mist...and then whine when his single target heal is insufficient to keep your whiny butt off the floor because he can't use his best debuffs on the enemy.
[/ QUOTE ]
Unfortunately I have to ask the stormie to turn hurricane off as the graphics make me ill if I'm inside them and I'm not good at cleaning vomit off my KB. I usually arrange that they're aware of that and happy before we start, or I quit the team.
That said, the stormies that won't turn hurricane off when they're completely ruining what the tank is doing are a menace and tend to get kicked.

I will, and do tell stormies not to use hurricane. That is a situational power and when a kin is your only heal on the team, well...I don't need to explain that. And when you have a lot of AOE's on the team, yeah no hurricane. Oh..and no hurricane on an ITF unless you're at Rom. Nothing more annoying than having all of those Romans all over the map.
Do not build Mission Architect missions set to kill all, with short timers & filled with max-power AVs, then complain that nobody is giving you a 5 star rating.
