What NOT to do in CoX

A couple of peeves I can't stand.

Do not broadcast something akin to the following:
"lvl 20 troller lft PST"
^Seriously, you're begging for a team on broadcast and you want them to send you a tell? How arrogant can you get?

Do not ask for a team on a badge/monster/hami/whatever channel.

Do not put in your search comments that you only team for influence.
^Yep. Seen it before. Not a joke.

Do not say "oooh shiny" and walk up to touch the shadow cyst while the two Kheldians in your team are screaming "RUN" and holding an impromtu 100 yard dash back to the elevator.
(yes it was a bad day)

Posted

Do not send tells to folks asking them to join your team when they are in a mission.

Posted

When a team is pulling, don't run around the corner to be with person pulling, it really defeats the whole purpose. They will be back with new friends for you to play with momentarily. Just stay around the corner with the rest of the team.

Do not keep sending SG invites every 5 mins to every low level toon for your brand new SG that's so "Cool cause you are getting in the ground floor".

If I want in a SG I will apply or ask about it.

Now there is one I wish people would get through their heads. Case in point, we had a tough mission last night. Tons of high +2 creys with 2 -3 bosses in each mob. We are right next to elevators. It should be reasonably easy right? Well, I do a perfect pull and scrappers rush in, aggrowing the whole room resulting in several team wipes. All accept for me who ran like hell and used the elevator. Dying over other peoples stupidity is not something I like to do.

also, if you have an invisible or stealthed character scouting the place DON'T follow him or her. It's really bad for your health

Do not complain that a TF is so long when it was explained to you at the beginning how long it could possibly go.

Do not send tells to Tanks saying you're a "healer, Rezzer, TPer." No offense, we don't need you, especially when we have a Earth/Rad controller with us.

Do not think that since you have a Kheldian that you're an expert in anything at all even if you did level your 50 normally and not PLed it. I have met level 50 noobs.

Do not think you're invincible, because you're not and never will be.

Do not think that just because you have a defender on your team that you'll be able to handle anything and everything that comes at you.

Do not scream "HEAL! HEAL! HEAL!!11 because you were a jacka** and aggroed too much.

Do not abuse the "HELP!" key, most good players watch the health bars.

Do not assume everyone is a good player.

if you say "no blind invites" you tend to get spammed with team invites a lot, lol. That should tell you something...

[/ QUOTE ]

That politely asking people to treat you in a nice and pleasant way is usually countered with interruptions and annoyances from other players?

There is a no-call list for telemarketers, but there is no way to block blind invites... until that day, they will be annoyances that players will have to deal with.

Don't demand heals because you agroed the whole group while running away. We can't heal if you're two rooms back . ..

Blind group invites are good in my book. At times its hard enough to get a group in the first place. A lot of people are like me and pass right over people that are bitter to blind invites. To me and my friends if the comment says "no blind invites" what it really means is "I don't want to team with anyone". I also noticed something else strange... if you say "no blind invites" you tend to get spammed with team invites a lot, lol. That should tell you something...

[/ QUOTE ]

If 'No Blind Invites' means the same as 'I don't want to team,' I've been putting the wrong message in that box all this time.

Seriously, I rarely accept blind invites, but I will on occassion (and just as rarely does it turn out very well when I do). For those players that take 5-10 seconds to send me a tell stating 'want to help with TF, mission or whatever,' I can then determine if I have the time and desire to join said team. Nothing bugs me more than a team invite and 2 seconds later a TF is started without so much as a 'What's Up?' I know this is a MMO so I'll live with it, but I can still complain about it should the mood strike me.

I don't think it matters what you put in that box as someone named 'ImOnCrAcK38457' is bound and determined to get you on a team.

Do not send a tell with an invite right behind it when someone has in their search comments, "No blind invites."
.

[/ QUOTE ]

I got this the other night....when the tell came for a split second I considered it, but a second later the invite screen popped up and I turned it down solely on the basis that the jack a$$ sending it was essentially sending a blind invite! Sending a tell to be followed less than five seconds later seems to be a weak excuse to send blind invites nowadays.

So i promptly quit and sent the same message and got picked up buy a person running solo missions but got to one tjey couldnt finish by themself, so i figured we would be getting a team togeather but they didnt want to, they just wanted me to help them defeat a boss so they could get a new contact. i helped defeat the boss then they quit the team saying that a friend was calling them or somthing. So no it is not arrogance.

Do not trust scrappers to act properly in groups.

[/ QUOTE ]

I take offense to that.

Anyway, Things you shouldnt do:

Expect to be able to solo an AV with no temp powers, no attacks besides the first one you get, and as a level 22 Emp/Energy defender.

Expect your team to make up for your faults (you gain too much aggro and are dying and you expect people to take off all 40 of the people attacking you, etc..)

Be an absolute jerk and decide that new plays are not worthy of you and they should die and they smell bad and are homosexuals.

I agree with all of this but one. I have a Tanker who has TP, Health triple-slotted, and more damage resistance than a Sherman Tank. She does quite well without a healer, and even on her own. Yet, I'm always glad to have a Healer along. "Don't think you're invincible. You're not, and never will be." A smart person once said that. Who was it, i wonder?

- Don't just sit there if you run into something new ("Task force? They must mean mission.") Ask questions.

- Don't ignore that "Options - Help" screen. There's a lot of actually... oh, useful information. Like when you get powers.

- Don't forget to POINT the new folks asking questions to that said help screen... even moreso if you're answering in broadcast, since you probably just kept someone ELSE from asking it.

- See that pretty skating rink the Ice 'troller just made under the bad guys? See how they're flopping around 'cause they can't stand up? Um... bad time to drop your AOE Immob.

- Don't spam "Heal Heal Heal!" at the Empath. You're not getting healed for a reason - such as they're keeping the tank alive, their powers are recharing, they're out of end or dead. Besides, you'll likely get "fight fight fight" spammed back at you from many emps - including me.

- Yes, they're a defender. They're running Trick Arrow. There is no healing arrow. Believe me, they want one so they can shoot teammates.

- Not an Empath does not make them "Not a (good/real) Defender." Notice how nothing's been hitting you since they joined? Don't gripe at them for not making green numbers.

- If you see a villain beat you with pink pom-poms, and they happen to have a stealth power? Don't complain about stalkers. That's probably someone like, oh, my energy/energy brute. Others can hide too. (Got "accused" of being a stalker 3 times one night.)

It's not the "lvl 20 troller LFT" that was arrogant, it was the PST part. If you want a team bad enough that you anounce it in broadcast then dont' expect anyone to send you a tell. Just click that team window when it comes up and be done with it.

And people like this are why I've gone from relying on my invite message to avoid blind invites to staying 'hidden'. "No blind invites" doesn't mean "I don't want to team", it means "I want to know before I join the team level and goals. I don't want to be stuck on a PLing team or a "go hunt kill skuls team". I'm often happy to join a PUG if I'm going to be on for awhile and they're doing something worthwhile (TF, missions, etc). That's my preference, and folks who take that as an invitation to spam me with me blind invites are [censored]s.

I've seen both sides of the blind invite argument on the forums.

Against Blind Invites:
You have no idea what type of group you're going to end up in, and can't give an informed response about whether you want to do it until you're already on the team.
Sometimes it pops up while you're fighting and can cause irritation and/or harm.
It lets you know the inviter has at least enough courtesy to give you information immediately and not try and force or trick you into joining a team.

For Blind invites:
It is much faster to invite people without sending tells, and with CoV, sometimes it is harder to get a good team going in CoH.
You save the person you're inviting having to be rude and say no, or make up an excuse.
You force the person to respond yes or no, instead of just ignoring a tell. If they click no, they don't want to join, whereas if they ignore a tell, you don't know if they're afk, busy, slow typer, or what.

So anyway, there have been arguments on both sides. I think both sides make some good points, but I still come down firmly on the "send tell first" side. Really, the advantages - letting the person know you're courteous, giving them honest info about what they'll be getting into, and avoiding interrupting their combat - far outweighs the benefits of easily spamming invites to a large number of people and quick response time.

I kind of feel that sending tells first may be more work, but it makes life easier for the prospective teammate, whereas sending invites first makes life easier for you, but makes more work for the invitee. I would much rather join the team of someone who is willing to be helpful, rather than selfish.

That has to be the silliest thing I've read in awhile.

Just because you're looking for a team doesn't necessarily mean you're looking to "help that one guy 20 levels below you kill a single boss then get booted" or "spend the next 4 hours on a TF"...

There is absolutely nothing arrogant about saying "hey, I'm looking for a team, drop me a message and lets see if I'm the right fit for your team (and their current goals)" ...that's what the "PST"'s there for.

At what point did "LFT" become "blind invite me so I have the pleasure of dealing with whatever crap I'm dealt"?

Don't complain about blind invites when you've made it clear exactly what kind of teaming you want. I've seen this:

Noob: Lvl34 blaster looking for PL
Noob: Lvl34 blaster looking for PL
Noob: Lvl34 blaster looking for PL
Noob: Lvl34 blaster looking for PL
Noob: Why do jerks keep sending me blind invites?
Noob: Lvl34 blaster looking for PL

/ignore Noob

And I've seen someone with "Looking for respec trial" in their search comment get mad at being invited to a respec trial.
