What NOT to do in CoX

How about this:

If you have your toon set to "Looking for any team" don't complain about the team that invited you, or quit with no comment seconds after accepting the invitation.

If you think you know a better strategy for playing an AT, take the extra 3 seconds and phrase it constructively. Saying "wth, you suxk" is not going to get you a "Thank God! Someone who knows how to play my toon, what should I do?" response. Unless there's a /sarcasm in front of it.

Maybe this is petty, but I see a lot of folks posting "I only play with teams +2 to my level". To me, if I am +2 this translates into "I'm trying to level quickly and want to suck up xp without being able to contribute as well as if we were on the same lvl"

Finally: If you post "no blind invites" and I take the time to inform you of what the team or objectives are and what we would like your role in the team to be, please take the same time to respond! I understand if you're in the middle of a fight and have to wait a minute or two, that's cool, but at least fire back a tell when things clear up.

I had a funny exchange. I'm a Kheld in squid form. Another one comes squiggling up to me and stops right in my face and says "you're cute!" I said "you're cute too!" I thought that was a rather cute moment, and I went into my mission. then I get this tell "do you have a b/f in RL.?"
I said, "no I have a g/f, I like girls".
He said "oh! sorry then". I'm glad it stopped there.

The only time anything like that every happened to me, a female toon sent my 8' gargantuan Tank a rather suggestive tell, followed with "girlfriend?"

My reply: "No, wife. I'm 44, been married 14 years."

"Eep! Sorry" No more tells.

I used to fiddle with my back feet music for a black onyx. My entire room absorbed every echo. The music was . . . thud like. The music was . . . thud like. I usually played such things as rough-neck and thug. Opaque melodies that would bug most people. Music from the other side of the fence.

Never invite someone who says "no blind invites", "My level or higher", "PL me Please" or "Send tell first" in their comment. They're more interested in XP than in having fun, and are usually group spoilers.

[/ QUOTE ]

I object to this. The reason my search profile says "Please send a tell first" is that I am NOT interested in power-leveling or getting XP as fast as possible. I'd rather be on a fun, friendly team that generates XP slowly than with a bunch of jerks and leveling every 45 minutes.

I have 'no blind invites' set more for the fact that I WANT to be asked to join a team, more often than not, when I do get a blind invite and on a whim join the team, I find out Im 1 of 2 or 3 higher lvl characters while the rest are 2 or more lvls LOWER...makes me feel like a frakkin babysitter

and lately, with some of my newer. lower lvl toons, Ive been getting invites to SGs/VGs.....its not that they want me as a player, but for the impressive amounts of Prestige that lower level toons acquire, so have started included SGs as part of 'no blind invites'

as the founder of a couple of SGs (Tankers Union local T34 on Protector Server bening so far my best), I always ask (ie broadcast) that the SG is recruiting and those interested please come to 'X' location...that way its left up to the player to decide if he/she wants to join..

I've got one...

Do not invite someone without checking to see where they are first.

Over my main's career, I've had several invites where I've been in one zone (or area within a zone, like the Tunnels in the Hollows), and gotten invited to a team that was clear across the city (in Boomtown, Striga, Croatoa, etc.)

Wasted several good minutes just getting to the mission...

Do not broadcast something akin to the following:
"lvl 20 troller lft PST"
^Seriously, you're begging for a team on broadcast and you want them to send you a tell? How arrogant can you get?

[/ QUOTE ] its not arogance its common sence. I broadcasted "lvl 12 blaster lft", lastnight and got picked up by a team where the highest player on the team was 4 lvls below me. So i promptly quit and sent the same message and got picked up buy a person running solo missions but got to one tjey couldnt finish by themself, so i figured we would be getting a team togeather but they didnt want to, they just wanted me to help them defeat a boss so they could get a new contact. i helped defeat the boss then they quit the team saying that a friend was calling them or somthing. So no it is not arrogance.

[/ QUOTE ]

I think you missed the point here...
It's not the "lvl 20 troller LFT" that was arrogant, it was the PST part. If you want a team bad enough that you anounce it in broadcast then dont' expect anyone to send you a tell. Just click that team window when it comes up and be done with it.

actually, i do this often since along with "looking for any" i have in my search comment in nice big caps "NO HOLLOWS"....
and sure enough, being a lvl 16+ Fire/Fire tank, i get invites to the hollows all the time. at which point i promptly quit the team without a word to them because its not my fault that youve suddenly become so desperate youve become illiterate. thats why theres a comment to post.

-If you need to go afk for whatever reason, don't forget to tell your team before doing so. Your team mates will appreciate it.

I have had it happen to me, someone left for a bio-break, but didn't tell anybody before going afk. Wasn't too happy to hear him tell us until after most of the team had wiped out.

Don't declare youself a "Healer" and then only heal the Tank letting others on the team die.

[/ QUOTE ]
i don't know how many times i've had the exact opposite happen to me. i'll be the tank, and yes i can take a lot of damage, but tanks need healing too sometimes. when everyone else on the team has full health, and the tank is dead, and the person who said they'd heal is fighting instead of healing the tank there's something wrong with that. if everyone's dead too, then that's another story, lol.

Just me:

[/ QUOTE ]
personally i say no blind invites and send tell first cos i want to know if we're hunting or mishing before i join a team. i've made plently of teams and it's a hassle to have someone join to find out after that they aren't interested in what you're doing. easier to tell them first that you're hunting and not mishing and have them say 'no thanks' than to invite them and find the other AT's that you need. and i'm definitely not after the xp, else i wouldn't have a dozen lvl 15-30 chars, i'd have a couple lvl 50's by now.

nothing tops blind sg invites though, just ugh. clearly they just want more people and don't care who you are or how you play. yes i know my lvl 30 blaster doesn't have a sg, my last couple ones were annoying and all disbanned, i don't want one, i don't want a base i don't need it. yes i'm anti-social, i know, too bad.

I've got one or two:

Don't blind invite someone to a TF/SF team just because they are near the contact. These things are time consuming, don't assume someone has the time/desire, they might be reading the contact info.

If you are doing a TF/SF, and you have teammates who are above the level cap, don't tell them they will get xp. TF/SFs auto-exemplar you to the highest level, that means you only earn inf/recover debt if you are above the level cap.

Both these things happened tonight, and the latter killed an SF before we had cleared more than one room. The worst though, is that I attempted to tell the higher levels that they would be auto-exemped, and the leader apparently sent them tells telling them I didn't know what I was talking about.

Such a great thread, even though its scary how big of an issue blind invites are. I guess 90% of the player population never visits the boards.

I did find a bit of a solution to this the other night, I was in the mood to just solo some missions, and after a few blind invites I had enough. The search field finally read "Just got account and PL To 32, LFT PL Only" Believe it or not things got pretty quiet after that.

That aside, issue 2 of don'ts.

When you have LFT in your search field, and say that you are looking for missions, do not get angry when I ask if you would like to join. (Apparently they forgot to change their status)

Do not yell at Kheld who chooses to go Human form for Looks. We are not all about maxing our builds out.

When your team leader/Agro Manager asks the team to retreat, please at least consider the option. A good leader will survey the battle and decide that the risk to himself/herself and fellow team may be too great. (We aren't doubting your skills, we are just making a clutch decison that we feel would be in the best intrest of everyone.)

When a scrapper says "Don't Follow Me I want to try something" he/she is going to show off, and see how close they can get to getting themselves killed. They do not factor your saftey into the situation. So basically, don't follow them.

Do not get angry when you call for heals on the run. We aren't all empaths that have a point and click ranged heal.

If the team leader makes a suggestion, (I should add in the stipulation that it is a reasonably intelligent one) try to at least listen to it, intead of getting angry because he/she is trying to tell you how to play your build. Again if he/she is a good leader, they are looking out for the team. (The blaster who uses Rain of Fire vs +3's who are under mass hypnosis).

Do not Spam "Stop Running Coward" in a PVP zone when a person is running and hopping into missions.

Do not get upset if someone uses less than fair tactics in PVP (They are villians after all, the get a + to Dastardly Deeds and Underhanded Maneuvers) The zone will always be a risk, and you are not required to go there.

Never ask a PB if they are a healer. It is beyond Scary.

If your sending a tell to a random person who is already on a team, asking if you can join, (This act seldom bothers me) Please 1. Include Your AT and Level, 2. Be patient.

If you are a 50 with a search field saying you are willing to help, or looking for TF's/badge missions, and a lower level sends you a tell describing there situation, do not snap at them and call them a noob. (I'm Guessing there person must have been having a bad day on that one)

If you ask someone to join an SG Do not forcefully ask them to Run in SG Mode, when you offer them no teaming opportunities/ conversation/ or other benefits. (I had to ask why I stayed in that one as long as I did)

And Finally, Do not take anything I said too Seriously.

Just to pitch in on the whole 'Blind invite' thing with the others - I do use it, but only because I like to know what's going on before I jump in. You'd be surprised how many invites you get from people who are way out of your level range, higher or lower, or someone three zones away from you, nearly complete with a mission that everyone is leaving after, and expect you to get there in time.

No really I got kicked from a team for asking someone to turn it off after a team wipe that it caused, besides when I have SS on and am running back and forth casting buffs/debuffs an tying to avoid aggro I don't want to get stuck in your AoE freind slow -Acc, even more so if your are in a bottleneck drawing all kinds of AoE damage.

Now that sounds like an Urban Myth if I ever heard one. You can only TP someone to the same zone you are in. That being said, you could not TP the corpse into a mission or another zone. Not only that, but once outside, you would have to keep the corpse somehat close by. So in conlclusion, even though that was an absolutely hillarious idea, it would be too impractical and limited to be true.

Do not send a tell to a kinetics defender/controller asking "do you want to SB me while I herd? good XP".

Oooh made me think of another one.

Do NOT assume everyone likes Speed Boost. It might be fine for a squishy but to melee types it causes their moving accuracy to be greatly changed. Scrappers know exactly where to place themselves to kill things. If you speed boost them you have effectively debuffed their accuracy.

I think this is a throwback to EQ and Spirit of the Wolf. Everyone thought it was the coolest buff in the game and assumed everyone wanted it.

In CoH, running faster means you are traveling or running away from something. Scrappers do not run away, and shouldn't EVER. Even if the situation is bad and everyone shouts RUN! I will stay and fight to the death.

This could be solved easily. "Do you want Speed Boost?"

I can't believe this one hasn't been covered:

DO NOT turn on invisibility/stealth/phase shift in a mission, run to the end where the boss is located, and then say "here."

NOT everyone can run past a couple dozen mobs to get to you! NOT everyone WANTS to run past all the mobs to get to you. (Some of us might actually want XP from those mobs.) NOT every mission will be over if you kill the boss at the end.

And as a corillary:

If it's an outdoor mission and you simply MUST invisibly run to the end where the AV is, DO NOT say "here" while standing within normal aggro range of the mobs! If I TP to your location as a non-invisible blaster, what is likely to happen to me?

Another one, I'm on a roll...

DO NOT make your costume look like the same mobs you are fighting. It's not funny, it confuses your team, and you may not get healed because you look like the enemy.

DO NOT use invis, or invis the whole team on a mission that has ghosts or other invis looking enemies. Again, its confusing to the team.

It makes a big difference if it is easy to tell who is friendly and who is not when you're in a heated fight. I've seen people die while we just stood there thinking the fight was over and more than one invis ghost or Knives of Artemis was just standing among us getting their next shot ready.

But also DO NOT assume that a Kheld is automatically a n00b, a jerk, an arrogant know-it-all, or otherwise a bad player just because they're a Kheld. As with ANY AT, or better yet, ANY player... give them a chance to show whether they are a good fit for your team.

Thats right. I was blind invited to a team yesterday. 8 people. they were talking about regrouping so I know they just underwent a team wipe. I was thinking "omg what did I just get into?" Still, as a PB I knew I was bringing a lot to the table, I could make a difference to the team. When I got there I noticed the mobs were Tsoo and only about 10-15 in each group in the mission. (thats not very many for a full team to handle). I knew there was somethign wrong. There are 3 tanks, 2 defenders, a troller and a blaster. When we got the the next group everyone just stood there. the defender and the entire team slowly inched toward the mob and when it aggro'd they all started fighting! Well, we made it through that fight pretty well although it was chaos. On the next mob buffs were passed around and again they just stood there saying "Ready!" yet no one moved. So jokingly I said "do you want ME to start?" and they all said YES! So I did what any stupid PB would do, I used both area nukes I had then switched to Dwarf and pummeled them. None of their 3 tanks were taunting. I ended up being the tank and then switching to squid to damage. The mission finished after a few rooms and I politely bowed out of the team.

I just got my MM to 40 last week, and since I basically concentrated on that and denied my alt-itis, it had been a long time since I had played anything low. This weekend I started a Brute and got something to add to the list:

Do not send an invite to anyone if you are not going to talk to them at all or select any missions. They sent me 2 blind invites, then I accepted the second invite and for 20 min. they did not say one word, select a mission or invite anyone else (even after repeated greetings and questions from me). They just stood in the same place on the map (in the street). I was not sure if they wanted me to streetsweep for them or what because of the lack of communication, but after awhile, I just quit because it seemed hopeless to me and I am sure there are other teams out there.

Do not launch an AOE when asked to pull to reduce the mob group size. I mean, I know it is "Doy" by now, but I was on a team the other night and we were pretty overwhelmed. We decide to pull, and it seemed the only people who could fathom how to pull were me and another Brute. I tried to get the AR Corruptor to pull, and when we finally got him to do it (after multiples tells and groups), he just starts launching M30's. I mean, seriously, shoot, break line of sight, and bring him into the carnage because:

1. Death will come alot faster to the mob
2. If you do pull more then one, the mobs will be bunched up on the corner, which is great for buffers/debuffers/healers.

The point is to create chaos FOR THEM, NOT US!!
